Cindy's life changes the minute she receives the book Djinn from Sasha. Within hours the forces of darkness infiltrate her life, forcing them to run for their lives.
Sasha doesn't know it's her he has to save, because evil hides in the strangest places.
This is an insider's view of possession, and the tension of two lovers battling it.
The first words that come to mind when talking about Djinn are profoundly disturbing. This is a horror story that crept under my skin and had me torn between my urge to turn the page, and my fear of reading it in the middle of the night. This is horror at its finest, the kind that has you jumping at every sound. I particularly appreciated Poppet's portrayal of Cinn's deterioration, the whipcord POV between two entities warring in the same body left me feeling as disoriented as Cinn must have been, which really put me into the story. If you want a truly immersive tale of the occult, look no further. Djinn will leave you wondering what you might have invited in to your own life, and keep you looking over your shoulder for weeks to come.
This was a great book. Terrifying - not in a blood and guts way, but totally psychologically. There are some things in this world you just can't be dismissive about. It does you no good to be jealous.
While the story could continue with a sequel, I honestly hope that it doesn't, simply because it would mainly be rehashing this book, just changing who it was happening to and what situations that person ends up finding themselves in as a result - and they're not nearly as interesting a character as Cin.
Parts of this story moved too fast. Sasha and Cindy's relationship happened in 1 night and I couldn't quite invest in either of them.
Sasha was the only character that was OK and seemed down to earth. I disliked the character of Cindy even before she was possessed.
I felt like the whole story jumped from 1 moment to the next no real explanations and this let the story down.
I normally like supernatural themed books and was excited to read this. However, the lack of investment in the characters and some wildly missing plot lines let this book down.
I found at times the author just wanted to write about different religions and cultures as the book was very detailed in those parts.
What a great, disturbing, and frightening read. You can tell that the author thoroughly researched esoteric and theological lore. The characters were well fleshed out and were relatable. Unlike other reviews, I was able to tell who was speaking because their name was at the top of the chapter, so perhaps the book was updated? Anyway, it's a great read and anyone who enjoys reading horror and possession type books will surely enjoy this book. It's so good that I didn't want to put it down. Some of the characters made me want to choke them, others made me fear for them. I think this would make a great movie, the authors writing style made this easy to visualize and I can only imagine how a movie could portray this.
This is one of the BEST and most PERFECT horror novels I've ever read!
K...I'm not TOOOOO into horror, but I occasionally get an inkling for something spooky. I DON'T like gore & that is the one factor that holds me back from consuming more in the horror genre. I've read quite a bit from Dean (Koontz) and some Stephen (King, of course!), too. I'm going to go the length here and say that Poppet is in the running with the Bigs, IMHO. Seriously.
The story was about Cindy, early 20's, a kinda hippee girl, into occult & stuff like that. Her favorite store, Para-Dice is run by Sasha, a man who has always had eyes for her and is constantly trying to impress her with 'special' things he comes across just for her. This time it was a cool looking ancient leather bound book called Djinn. They will soon find out that Djinn is not just any regular book. Her life, as well as Sasha's are about to take an amazing & horrifying turn!
I was glued to my Kindle after starting this book. When I absolutely HAD to set it down (in the shower and while driving!) my thoughts kept returning to the story and the characters. The characters were great, very well formed, particularly Sasha & probably because we heard the most from him. Sasha narrated first person throughout much of the book. Sometimes the perspective would switch to Cindy which I initially feared was going to become confusing quickly. If I have even one single beef with this book, it is that. The changing perspectives without warning. Sometimes I would have to go back to the chapter change and start over to see if I could get any better hints as to whom was speaking. I think just a name at the beginning of a new person's thought would be very helpful. It wasn't a major thing, just a speedbump sort of, but it took the flow out of my reading for a time.
Cindy and Sasha get into lots of different healing and meditative techniques. This stuff was all like a foreign language to me, but it was easy to get the picture if you know what I mean. I learned some things from it. If this is not new stuff to you, you may really have fun with this book. Still, I know zero and I was able to keep up. There is an ample amount of spooking to be gotten by all. An AMPLE amount of spookies!!!
Ya gotta read this book, horror lover or no...it's just SO GOOD!! Now I just have to get back to deciding exactly which Poppet book I'll be moving on to next. Poppet has new and devoted fan!!
I was very intrigued wit the title of this book, Djinn by Poppet. This title stirs up images of Genies and magic carpet rides, but there is a much darker side that the world forgets. In this book Poppet captures the true darkness that haunts us all in the ancient myth of the Djinn.
Her story follows Cindy and Sasha; Cindy a young woman who has a love of the occult and books. Her thirst for knowledge takes her to her favorite bookstore where she finds Sasha, who is the key to her destruction and survival, he gifts her with a book that will change their lives forever. As a lover of books, the idea that something can be "caught between the pages" so to speak was very disturbing. The horror of this story is right up there with the "Exorcist", and quite a few times I found myself feeling the same uneasy feeling I had when I read that book for the first time. This tales is classic horror with a "Devil in disguise" feeling that will spawn nightmares.
This tale is well written ; the author has a very subtle way of writing horror that sneaks up on you and allows your own imagination to thrust you into the depths of hell. Though I did feel very disoriented reading the story with the different POV, which left me guessing and trying to get back on track. I realize now that this style of writing put me right into the story. I was feeling what Cindy was feeling as her life spiraled out of control as something more powerful and dark took over her life. At the time of reading, I did not like was the use of different faiths that Sasha sought out to try and find a way to help Cindy. But in hindsight it brings to light that in desperate times people will do whatever it takes to save the ones they love.
I would like to give kudos to the author for her research on the different faiths in the story, she gives very detailed accounts that were true to form. All in all this was an easy and scary read. I recommend it for those who enjoy the darker side of the occult and are not afraid of things that go "bump in the night". For if you are afraid of what you can't see, then this book will keep you up at nights. Definitely not for the faint of heart. With that said I give this book 4 stars.
Poppet has an amazing imagination, but more than that she has the strength of plot and characters in her work...and I’ll tell you how I know this. I could not read Djinn in one sitting (or at most two as I usually do when reading to review a book), because life got a bit hectic. When I returned, however, I discovered I had not lost my place in the story because Poppet’s characters stayed with me and were waiting for me to continue the journey! No problem with plot either; I got right back into it. I recommend that you, reader, go to it in one or two sittings, because then you’ll get the entire vivid experience, the heart thumps and the ‘oooh’s’! You’ll love and hate the genie in a book, never quite knowing whether to trust it or not...until all is revealed. And that is as much as I’ll reveal here: grab your copy today!
Well, I did it I read a book out of my normal genre. Djinn is my very first horror book, and I must say, I was introduced to the genre right! My perception of what a good horror story is; one that gets your heart racing and keeps you on the edge of your seat. This book did this for me and more. The dialogue was rich. It is written in first person from two perspectives. Each perspective was of a well developed character and it was also enlightening.
I have read many possession accounts, but never from the viewpoint of the one possessed. All the emotions of fear, confusion, and disbelief were masterfully woven into an easy reading and very entertaining story. I have come to the conclusion, that every other horror book I read from now on is going to have to be held up to a high standard, now that I have read this book. If you like horror you will definitely love this book. I did!
Djinn Was a book I grabbed up for free on Amazon I kept putting off thinking not right now I have so many other books I know will be great to finally I had this brilliant Ideal to read the book.
Fabulous! Djinn is defiantly not my normal read but it was one of the best reads I'd had in months I don't know what possessed me to pick it up and read it but thank god it did. Wonderful play on characters, excellent plot hooks, and enough crazy to make even MY head spin.
Now you have to understand I got through books like most people go through candy. Some days I want nothing to do with them and others I can't get enough. Djinn broke my Dry streak there's only so many books you can read and go ehh after before you want to stop reading and just wait a while. Poppet is a new author to me and if any of her other books are this good she will defiantly become a favorite author of mine.
Somebody take away Poppet's thesaurus, please. This book was overflowing with awkwardly placed words that just didn't quite fit. Also, for a book set in Portland, Oregon, with American-born main characters, there were WAY too many British terms. Oregonians don't go to the loo or out for brekkers. The second half of this book was impossible to follow. It was disjointed and unclear. I see what she was going for, putting the reader in Cindy's head, but it just came across messy, like the author couldn't keep track of her own story. And after all that, I don't even need to mention the aggravating grammar. The story had potential, but the execution was sub-par.
I don't like spiritual things at all, so I didn't like much the way the main characters thought and did. At first I felt this book was not for me, as there were many instances I couldn't identify with their thoughts or feelings. However, despite of my non-preference for 'spiritual', the story itself was really enjoyable and thrilling, keeping me wanting to read further. The ending seemed like a sort of same old scene to me, but it was okay.
I'd categorise Djinn as paranormal rather than horror. Urban fantasy fans may like it, I guess?
This book started out very well. The characters hooked you from the start and the moment Djinn was introduced, the plot took off. However, by the 3/4 point of the book, it started to seem like the book was not going anywhere. IMO the ending should have happened much sooner. Still, I liked the story but not nearly as much as I enjoyed Seithe!
If you want to the edge of your seat insanity with a twist of demented love this is the book for you. I give No spoilers but will tell you that this isn't your normal genie story. Poppet is amazing in her telling of this tale. She brings fact and fiction into your soul where you don't know where one ends and the other begins. I give this a solid 5 stars....
I've always been a fan of supernatural stories, and this story managed to keep my interest to the end. It is worthy to note the gradual mental changes overcoming the main character, and at times it made me wonder whether everyone really was going crazy. The fight between psychological and reality toward the end was quite good.
This book moved really fast and it wasn't always clear what was happening. The author was more interesting in making sure we understood the top shelf alcohol these characters were swigging than the basic mechanics of the magic involved. Badly needs some editing. There's at least one slur that is completely unnecessary (in the inner thoughts of a character, not dialogue).
I read Djinn in one day - Poppet kept the tension and suspense at a level that kept me turning page after page. It is an interesting and frightening take on the lore. I'd recommend it to all those supernatural buffs out there looking for a new twist.
I really enjoyed this book was my first ever Horror book i have read and i must say I really enjoyed it
Poppet kept the tension and suspense at a level that kept me turning page after page. Poppet is becoming one of my Fav Authors I have read a few of her books now and can't wait to read more :)
