Wolf Hunt

Rate this book
In a backwoods corner of Appalachia, the re-introduction of the wolf has thuggish redneck Jake Hammond in a tizzy. A swaggering bully who likes to kill things –pretty much anything—Jake demonizes the unpopular canines and sees them as natural targets. He doesn’t care much for soft-spoken, long-haired Kevin Faraday, an Army vet who keeps mostly to himself, and isn’t impressed by the young man’s plea on the animals’ behalf. But it might be a good idea to pay more heed –because there’s a full moon coming, and not all of the wolves in the area come from a re-introduction program….

Werner A. Lind was raised in eastern Iowa. A graduate of Clinton (Iowa) Community College and of Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas, he also holds master's degrees from Eastern Mennonite Univ. in Harrisonburg, Virginia and from Indiana State Univ. Formerly a college teacher and public librarian, he and his wife Barb now live in Bluefield, Virginia, where he has been a librarian at Bluefield Univ. since 1992. They have three daughters. His short fiction, book reviews, and scholarly articles have been published in various periodicals, and he has twice won prizes for his work in fiction. Lifeblood is his first novel.

Note to other authors: I'm mainly on Goodreads to be part of conversation about reading in general, and only secondarily to plug my own work where that's appropriate or to network with other authors. I don't use friend invitations just as advertising, though I know many authors who do. If you're one of those, and invite me, I'll probably accept; but if I find that you never or hardly ever review and discuss any books but your own, and we never interact except when you invite me to read your books, I'll probably delete you eventually. Just so you know! :-)

So I’m afraid that I must admit that I had no idea Werner Lind was an author. He was the first person that welcomed me to Goodreads several years ago and we’ve been friendly since. I knew he was a group moderator and such, but never a writer. So when he told me that he had written a few works, I just had to read them. Now onto Wolf Hunt…it had a very classic feel to it. A simple, yet effective, short story. I must admit that I truly disliked Jake from the beginning. There was nothing likeable or redeeming about him whatsoever, and he was certainly written to be that way. His unwarranted bloodlust was just a bit too much, even for someone open-minded like myself. So as we see him gloating about gunning down a lone female wolf, you grow increasingly tired of his cockiness and bravado. And all of that build up made the finale of this short story so, so satisfying. But this was a very subtle horror story, written with a certain elegance that is hard to nail down, which certainly paid off in the end. Well done, Werner!

Short story. Very entertaining. Classic feel to the narrative.

I must say that Jake needs to feel the love of my Glock.
Nothing would satisfy me more.

Thank you Werner.

A quick short story that could be a bit of a tough read for animal lovers about an Appalachian hunter named Jake, whose lust for the kill is quite monstrous. Rather than hunting for food or to stop any real threat by a predator preying on local livestock, Jake instead seems to enjoy killing for the sake of the kill, taking pleasure in doling out death and cruelty and making it quite difficult to feel sorry for him when his eyes are opened one night on a full moon, despite an admonition by former Army soldier, Kevin Faraday.

A fast-paced, well-written and descriptive story with realistic local dialogue, this short tale by author Werner Lind is a clear warning that human beings would do well to cease looking for the monster without and instead guard against the one within.

This story was given to me as a gift by the author and, as a fan of his vampire novel, Lifeblood, I would love to read more of his werewolf mythos if he were ever to continue this short story in a longer work.

As someone who considers that wolves have been unfairly maligned throughout history - humans being a much more destructive species - I greatly enjoyed Werner Lind's tale. The Appalachian setting was very effective, and the story was well-paced and well-written. Would love to read more stories from him!

“Lifeblood” & ”The Gift” are Werner Lind’s other works to date; they are vampire stories. He moves on to tackle something new, werewolves. I enjoy Werner’s work; I think he is an exceptional talent, and currently I am working with him on an installment of The Author’s Lab/Collaboration. The twist and bend of it is that he has a certain kind of vampire, Laurie Bowler has a certain of vampire , so we are going to have them meet a little bit down the road in ”Fangs, Inc.“ the franchise we have created inside of The Author’s Lab. Do you know of anyone that has had two different author’s vampires cross in the same story? I have not, but correct me if I am wrong, please. Here is the synopsis for “Wolf Hunt”:
“In a backwoods corner of Appalachia, the re-introduction of the wolf has thuggish redneck Jake Hammond in a tizzy. A swaggering bully who likes to kill things -pretty much anything-Jake demonizes the unpopular canines and sees them as natural targets. He doesn't care much for soft-spoken, long-haired Kevin Faraday, an Army vet who keeps mostly to himself, and isn't impressed by the young man's plea on the animals' behalf. But it might be a good idea to pay more heed -because there's a full moon coming, and not all of the wolves in the area come from a re-introduction program...”
I am a sucker for the author’s ability to put together a nice tight plotline and execute it. His writing is engaging, succinct and just totally engrossing. The characters he creates here and the universe he has them inhabit is just fresh and fun. I like his werewolf, just like I have enjoyed his vampires. Maybe somewhere down the line I will get to torture his werewolf, I like that thought.
Things have changed around here. I am now the published author by Trestle Press of “I Have Chrome Balls, Don’t You?” an “In Between The Collaborations”, “Down Low- Dead” with Vincent Zandri, “The Jersey Shore Has Eyes” with Big Daddy Abel”, “G.S.I Gelati’s Scoop Investigations Psychotic Detectives” with Thomas White, “Who Whacked The Blogger” with Benjamin Sobieck,“Thad and The G-Man’s Most Awesome Adventure” with Thad Brown , “Hotel Beaumont” with B.R. Stateham, “Bring Us Your Living…Now!” with HR Toye, “The Edge of Cataclysmic” with Big Daddy Abel, “The Ultimate Six-Pack” ,”Fangs,Inc.” with Laurie Bowler and the soon to be released “A Prince in Trenton ,Seriously?” with Mark Miller . All the stories are available @ Amazon, Barnes & Nobles and Smashwords. I am also the host of the wildly popular The G-ZONE blogtalk radio show. Thanks for stopping by today; We will see you tomorrow. Have a great day. http://www.gelatisscoop.blogspot.com
