Constantin Virgil Gheorghiu (September 15, 1916 in Războieni, Romania – June 22, 1992 in Paris, France) was a Romanian writer, best known for his 1949 novel, The 25th Hour.

Virgil Gheorghiu was born in Valea Albă, a village in Războieni Commune, Neamţ County, in Romania. His father was an Orthodox priest in Petricani. A top student, he attended high school in Chişinău from 1928 to June 1936, after which he studied philosophy and theology at the University of Bucharest and at the Heidelberg University.

He traveled and stayed in Saudi Arabia to learn the Arabic language and the Arab culture, before writing the biography of prophet Mohammed. The book was translated from Romanian to French and to Persian in Iran and in Urdu in Pakistan. Unfortunately, this book was never translated into English. Its Hindi translation is being printed in India and expected to be available by Jan. 2020, with the Hindi title saying "A prophet you do not know".

Between 1942 and 1943, during the regime of General Ion Antonescu, he served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Romania as an embassy secretary. He went into exile when Soviet troops entered Romania in 1944. Arrested at the end of World War II by American troops, he eventually settled in France in 1948. A year later, he published the novel Ora 25 (in French: La vingt-cinquième heure; in English: The Twenty-Fifth Hour), written during his captivity.

Gheorghiu was ordained a priest of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Paris on May 23, 1963. In 1966, Patriarch Justinian awarded him the cross of the Romanian Patriarchate for his liturgical and literary activities.

در کتاب دومین شانس نویسنده رژیم‌های سیاسی را به باد انتقاد گرفته و اوضاع جنگ جهانی دوم و بخصوص شرایط پس از آن را تشریح کرده
کتاب با نقل داستای از بوریس بودنار ، برای دوستش آغاز میشه، که خاطره‌ای از دوران کودکی را برایش تعریف می‌کند. بوریس که چیزی جز تحقیر از خانواده‌اش دریافت نکرده، به قصد آزادی و نجات می‌خواهد رومانی را ترک کند و به روسیه برود.
داستان کسانی‌که به جستجوی امید و یا نشانه‌ای، سعی در ادامه‌ی زندگی دارند. کتاب بیشتر به بررسی فضای کمونیستی شوروی پرداخته.

Un roman deosebit despre felul în care Politica și Istoria reușesc să strivească omul de rând. Acesta devine un simplu conglomerat în ochii celor care fac măsurători și ridică lagăre. Omul dispare și se naște categoria sau clasa sau grupul care dau direcția. Ființa umană nu mare niciun cuvânt de spus în apărarea sa. Aproape că nu mai are dreptul la a fi judecată corect.
Democrația și libertatea sunt două dintre cuvintele pe care scriitorul face efortul de a le explica prin prisma unor dialoguri aproape kafkiene și absurde, rupte parcă din teatrul lui Eugen Ionescu. Întreaga narațiune este tulburătoare, iar autorul nu prea îi oferă cititorului speranța în mai bine.
Deviza cărții ar putea foarte bine să fie: din rău în mai rău/ din lac în puț, cum spunem noi, românii.

Có vẻ như HHĐ không tự dịch mà chia văn bản ra cho vài người (các học trò của mình) dịch rồi ghép lại mà không qua kiểm tra hay hiệu đính, vì thế có đoạn có rất nhiều lỗi 1 (khoảng từ 329-476), mà có đoạn có ít, hoặc lại mắc một số lỗi về chính tả thông thường của người nói tiếng Việt ở miền Nam (phụ âm cuối, dấu thanh).

This is a book that's less didactic than the same author's better-known novel The 25th Hour, and all the better for it. It describes the insanity of 1940s bureaucracy grinding humans through their gears, the imposition of political power taking presence over the most basic humanity. No side is spared this scathing critique.

I read this book when I was quite young an it made a great impression on me. Everything and I mean everything that could go wrong in the life of the main character goes wrong but always searching for that second opportunity. It is also a critique of communism and fascism of the 40's and WWII.
