In racing, you're in or you're out. Sometimes both at the same time...
Go ahead, call Callie Monroe the queen of fools. She already does. After NASCAR slammed its doors in her face, she came up with the idea for the X-TREME Racing League. Now she's all but relegated to pit row while her business partner-aka XRL's bankroll-takes the credit.
One look at NASCAR champion Derrick Derringer red-lines Callie's fantasy gauge. And when he actually "notices" her next to her Playboy-hot boss, he makes her sweat.
Derrick has always been attracted to the studious type, but Callie's got the cherry on top of her beauty and brains: she's a gear head. She's also scared to death of him. He's never had to work hard to get a woman in his bed, but with Callie, he finds himself changing tactics for a prize he never expected. Her heart.
Callie has no intention of being Derrick's next "checkered flag," but if she's to lure him over to XRL, she'll play the game. A dangerous one. Not only because his kiss sends her focus sliding out of control. There's a saboteur who seems intent on putting XRL into the wall-no matter how many people have to die.
Warning: The author doesn't guarantee this book will help you "get lucky," but does have documented proof that the love, laughter, naughtiness and hot, hot, hot sex in this book will leave you gasping for air. Dangerous curves ahead!
With over a million books in print, Pamela Britton likes to call herself the best known author nobody’s ever heard of. Of course, that’s begun to change thanks to a certain licensing agreement with that little racing organization known as NASCAR.
Nowadays it’s not unusual to hear her books being discussed by the likes of Jay Leno, Keith Olbermann, or Stephen Colbert. Flip open a magazine and you might read about her, too, in Sports Illustrated, Entertainment Weekly, or Southwest Airlines’ Spirit Magazine. Channel surf and you might see her on CNN, ESPN, ABC or NBC.
But before the glitz and glamour of NASCAR, Pamela wrote books that were frequently voted the best of the best by The Detroit Free Press, Barnes & Noble (two years in a row) and RT BOOKclub Magazine. She’s won numerous writing awards, including the National Reader’s Choice Award, and a nomination for Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart and the Holt Medallion.
When not following the race circuit, Pamela writes full-time from her ranch in Northern California where she lives with her husband, daughter and, at last count, twenty-one four-legged friends.

I have to let you’ll in on a funny story about this book. I saw it on the publisher’s website and was very excited about it. So, I requested it for review and when I got it I started reading it and about two chapters in I knew I’d read it before. I was scratching my head because it was just so familiar, so I asked a couple of my fellow reviewers who told me basically “duh”, the e-book came out a year ago and the print one last month. I was just glad to know I wasn’t going crazy and because I’ve read right at 300 books this year, I’m cutting myself some slack. But, I will tell you that after re-reading this one for review I fully remember it and I enjoyed it tremendously.
Callie Monroe is a gear head who tried to work for NASCAR but got door after door slammed in her face. She came up with the idea of an alternate league the X-TREME Racing League. The concept, the cars, everything is her idea but she didn’t have the money to fund it. So she now finds herself working for Veronica who has the money to back it and of course takes credit for it. Callie’s really not complaining because she’s getting to live out her dream, but when she finds herself the object of Derrick Derringer’s attention, she’s not at all sure how to handle him.
Derrick Derringer has been NASCAR’s golden boy for awhile. When he’s approached by the X-TREME racing league he’s intrigued by what they offer but he’s more intrigued by Callie and that’s before she opens her mouth and starts talking cars, engines, and stats. Derrick has a playboy reputation and Callie isn’t buying his act, in fact she calls him on it on more than one occasion and that’s just the thing, he can’t get her out of his head.
I really loved this story, the delicious game of cat and mouse between Callie and Derrick was so interesting and fun to read. I love that Callie although totally smitten with Derrick didn’t let him get away with his usual “stuff” when it comes to her. In fact, I’m sure this is one reason why he couldn’t stop his pursuit. Derrick despite being somewhat of a cad, proved himself over and over when he completely ignored the beautiful Veronica and followed after Callie. I also enjoyed that he fell for her mind just as much as the rest of her. There was a lot of intrigue, some danger, as well as some excellent sex in this book. While there were some very serious moments in this book there was some humor as well which made it a very well rounded book. From start to finish it’s very fast paced and despite having read it before and knowing how it ended, it was hard to put it down.
I just finished re-reading the first book in this series and it was equally as good. The books are independent of each other so don’t feel you have to read book one, to read this one. Burning Rubber is an entertaining and enjoyable book and is not to be missed by anyone who enjoys racing, arrogant but loveable men, and smart women!
Welcome to the X-Treme Racing League, where not only is the action happening fast on the track, but off it as well. Behind the scenes woman Callie Monroe created this idea after the big guys shut her out. That was fine with her, and now she has something new to look forward to. She just needs some drivers.
Callie hides behind her glasses, she doesn't go out and “live' much. She stays away from men and relationships, though I never fully learned why. There isn't much background for Callie to understand why she does the things she does. What comes off the most from Callie's character is the shyness factor. She's a very intelligent woman, but she doesn't fully allow herself to shine. She lets herself get pushed around by her boss Veronica. And what Veronica wants, Veronica gets. Veronica sets her sights on having big time racer Derrek Derringer on the league, and pushes Callie to pressure Derrik.
Derrek has a reputation, and getting Callie to open up is like pulling teeth. He's intrigued by her, and despite the fact he loves where he races, he can't help but want to do this for Callie. Though it comes with strings -- at first.
Burning Rubber is a novel of push and pull, fast paced thrills, and a little bit of suspense added to the mix. The characters are fun, though a little more background would have made them sparkle even more. The push away/ come back that Callie does with Derrek didn't come with much of an explanation as I'd hoped it would. The sex scenes are hot, not too graphic but enough to make your toes curl. Ms. Britton creates another fun and exiting adventure featuring characters in a racing sport. Overall the story is engaging and riveting.
Do you enjoy sports themed romance books? A hot hero who knows what he wants and goes for it? A shy woman finally turning into a butterfly when she meets a man with genuine interest in her? Then may I suggest race to your nearest on line bookseller and pick up a copy of this hot book.
When I first started this book I was a little disappointed in the character Callie because of how she viewed herself physically - but I was able to let that go during the last 2/3rds of the book as it developed. I really liked the idea of the XRL and it seemed really plausible. Then when my romance suddenly turned into a murder mystery I was hooked and had to finish it ASAP just to see "whodunit" I actually think I liked this book better than the first extreme racing book. I don't know what it is about Pam Britton's books that draw me in but they do. Also this book gets extra brownie points for the subtle or maybe not so subtle Tony Stewart reference.
