Something's wrong with Tasha--she's not herself. At least that's what Amy thinks. And a best friend would know! Tasha's eyes look glazed. Her usual quick comebacks have become dull, one-word answers. It's as if Tasha is acting out some part in a horror movie. Only this isn't a movie, it's real. One by one, Amy notices other personality changes. Everyone seems possessed! And soon . . . whatever is happening to them may happen to Amy too.
I was born in New Britain, Connecticut, and grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. I also spent a year (5th grade) in Montgomery, Alabama, and a year in Ann Arbor, Michigan(8th grade). As a child, I always wanted to be a writer, but I had lots of other ambitions too. I wanted to be a teacher, a librarian, a movie star, the president of the United States, and a ballerina.
I didn't achieve all my goals. I never became a movie star, the president of the U.S., or a ballerina. But I've been a teacher and a librarian and most of all, a writer. I've been writing for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I always kept a diary. I wrote poems, stories, plays, songs and lots of letters. Writing wasn't easy for me, but it felt natural and right.
I've always read a lot, too. I was an English major at Emory University (I love Shakespeare), and I also received a master's degree in library science at Emory. I earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Chicago, and I taught children's and teen literature at St. John's University in New York for over 20 years. Now, I'm a full-time writer, living in Paris, France - the most beautiful city in the world.
maybe 2.5 stars Is it something in the candy? Are the shoelaces laced with something...more? Is her neighbor mind controlling her clients? Ugh Amy took forever to put together what was so obvious. So much for a high intellect. Although it was annoying her own mother didn't listen better. The show length vs the details we are given didn't match and that drove me about crazy. Also, why? Why did that have to be shared? I found this volume frustrating. The further into the series, the worse it gets...
Definitely one of the more unusual storylines. Though it is creepy because adults would probably behave exactly like that in that situation. Ahhh, the misunderstood youth!
Amy's classmates are acting strange, and she's determined to find out what it is. But with so many fads affecting them, can she narrow it down? Is she blowing things out of proportion or is there something more nefarious at work here?
Okay, so what I really enjoyed in this novel were all the 90s references. We've got people skating and skateboarding, trading shoelaces, chomping down on the most popular candy, and gushing about the last episode of the drama show everyone's watching. The only things missing were maybe some pogs and Power Rangers, but I loved the references and the message underneath all the fads.
I felt really bad for Amy in this one. The problem was hidden in shades of grey that no one can seem to see through but her. At the same time, I think it's about time she has a solo mission, so this was welcome.
I think what kind of killed the vibe for me was that the setting felt one-note. We mainly focus on the same locations with little differences in activity, so each scene felt similar to one another. The dialogue really drove this story, and while that can work for this book it just didn't.
If you're reading this series it may be best to skip this one, but I'm definitely still in it for the long haul.
I've been rereading the series for the nostalgia since they're now available as ebooks.
This is the one that annoyed me because when it first came out because I kept thinking, "You have a higher IQ. Why is it taking so long for you to realize why everyone's changed?"
After re-reading it, all I could think of was, "Damn, that undiagnosed ADHD really fueled that frustration."
This was the worst one in the series reread for me so far. It was a slog to get through and I can (sadly) say I won’t reread this one again — even for nostalgia sake. Decent premise, you could figure out what was wrong quickly, the parents would have that reaction…. still boring.
