This is another book I picked up during our recent visit to Maine. I was looking for something that helped me understand the state better than a short vacation visit allowed. The volume did not disappoint. It is composed of historical documents beginning with the first explorers, travel writing, memoirs, poetry, fiction, and even an oral history. Organized roughly chronologically, it offers a good overview of the Maine experience through time and the eyes and ears of a wide variety of people. I found the book unfailingly interesting.
A nice collection of stories, poems, essays, etc. about Maine, some fiction, some non-fiction. Didn't capture my interest enough to read it more than sporadically--took me a few months to get through.
Ran out of vacation time in Maine... need to go back! Edward Arlington Robinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay, E. B. White, and Marc read Sinclair Lewis' "Babbit in Maine" and something about the slave trade from Portland. But there's obviously much more.
