When mom and dad bring home a new puppy, everyone is so excited! All the kids love Ruby. But who gets to walk Ruby? Who gets to play with Ruby? Who gets to brush Ruby? In this sweet story, the Dungy children learn to stop saying, “Ruby is my dog,” and say instead, “Ruby is our dog!” A charming book which teaches the importance of sharing in a sweet and humorous way.

{My Thoughts} - This is a cute level two reader about a dog named Ruby. She is a sweet dog that a nice family adopts. Each of the kids in the family buy a special gift for Ruby, when the family goes to the pet store. Everything they buy is RED. They decided that Ruby is another name for red so everything she has needed to be red too. When it comes time for everyone to go to sleep each of the children in the family want her to sleep with them. In the end Ruby decides where she wants to sleep.
I really like this book, because it shows children the responsibility of having and caring for a pet. It also helps to show that children may not always agree with one another when it comes to how the pet should be cared for. It also shows that the nicer you are towards one another the easier it is to resolve whatever issues may arise when other children in the family may not want to share a pet with one another.
I think this is a wonderful book for any family that is thinking about getting a new pet, already has one and wants their children to get along.
Straightforward easy reader for around second grade reading level. Sweet pet story about a family who must pull together to make their pet dreams come true. Written by an amazing couple and illustrated with exuberance and pure joy.
