Since I finished Melissa Tereze‘s last book Discovery I was waiting for Juliet‘s story. I already knew parts of this story are about domestic violence, so I was prepared. And I wanna mention something about this right away. If you’re scared of having to read too many details, I can totally reassure you. There are none detailed description of the whole abuse. You will know what happened, but it’s not on the page. Melissa actually gives you pointers of the chapters which means you can decide if you wanna skip it.
Now about the story. This is one of those stories I was annoyed whenever I had to stop reading because of work or other stuff that needed to be done. I wanted to know what happens next and how they tackle all the obstacles. I was totally fascinated about Juliet after the last book and wanted to know what kind of woman is going to catch her. I was also curious about how she is going to do as a bar owner after being a lawyer for such a long time. For me it seemed like she totally eased in her new role and it was like she never did anything else. She definitely is a powerhouse in whatever she does but there is one thing missing which is love.
Melissa Tereze is an incredible storyteller and one of the things she especially excels at is writing the first meet up of the two MC‘s. For me these scenes are always very special because you just feel something shifting in the story. There is just the connection you feel and that’s when I often totally connect with both characters. That’s exactly what happened in this story. The moment Juliet meets Paige there is a connection. But of course a connection isn’t enough especially not with Paige‘s past. Having to run from her abusive husband means she can’t or shouldn’t get closer to anyone. But what can you do when you never knew about real love and then you feel like you never have before? Maybe this means she finally can be happy.
It wouldn’t be a Melissa Tereze book without angst and when it comes to Paige’s husband I definitely felt hers. The way Paige’s journey was written made total sense for me and there was more than one scene I wanted to protect her or tell her what to do. Of course that’s where Juliet came in and I had to take a backseat. Lol
I loved their scenes together. They were so sweet, caring but also hot together. This is another thing you know you get from Melissa scenes with lots of heat and chemistry. I probably could go on for a long time because I just loved these two together. What I also loved is to see Hannah again from the last book. That felt like a coming home to one of my favourite stories. 🥰
In the end I was happy as always when I finish a Melissa Tereze novel and definitely recommend the story.

3 Stars - It's okay.
If you have read any Melissa Tereze books then you will know exactly what you are getting yourself into with this one. I always give her books a try because I am usually interested in the plot. Some books I like way better than others. I would say this one is about the middle of the spectrum.
It suffers from some of the stuff I do not enjoy about her writing - a lot of repetitive inner dialog and the MCs not listening to each other or believing what they are hearing from each other is probably more like it.
Things I liked: the black point hits early so we get a lot of time with them being loved up and the abusive ex gets a taste of his own medicine even if it is off-screen.
One massive pet peeve: We keep hearing about how Paige is a "mixologist" and SHE NEVER MIXES A SINGLE CUSTOM COCKTAIL IN THE ENTIRE BOOK. Seriously. Not. One. I do not understand the point of making her a mixologist and then never doing anything with it. When she does finally make Juliet her signature cocktail, it's just a simple Brandy Alexander that she renames - that's it. Whyyyyyyyyy?????

The Hideout features Juliet from "Discovery". Actually, it's not a bad idea to read that book to get a feel for her mindset but not imperative.
When Juliet Saunders plunks down for The Hideout (a membership only bar) after dumping a successful law career, she has no idea how her life will be upended by her new mixologist - Paige Harrison. Paige is on the run from an abusive husband - never wanting to stay in one spot for too long until The Hideout when Juliet employs her.
The lead characters are nicely written and the initial spark of interest enough to change both women's thinking though anxieties loom large and physical and emotional hurts will be exposed. Juliet needs a reality check where Rachel is concerned and Harriet is either two-faced or really naive - I leaned to the first. I was frustrated by these two characters and also wanted James to get what he deserved.
This book has angst, romance and heat in Tereze's signature style leading to happy possibilities. Another easy, hot read for a chilly spring day!

I decided to read and/or listen to some of the books that are finalists for 2024 GCLS awards. I’ve read one and listened to one and haven’t had the greatest experience with either.
While I usually enjoy Melissa Tereze’s books a lot, I felt like this one had plot issues, was melodramatic, and you had to REALLY suspend disbelief throughout. Granted - this was nominated in the audiobook narrator category and K.A. Walsh did an excellent job. She is the reason I’m giving this three stars. But overall I considered not finishing it more than once.
Important content warning that domestic abuse is a significant plot point in this story.

This is a wonderful love story that doesn't shy away from difficult topics. The descriptive detail and engaging dialogue kept me turning the pages as quickly as I possibly could.
Juliet briefly appeared in Tereze’s previous novel, Discovery. Her all-business, buttoned-up, yet sexy persona piqued my interest and I just knew she had a story to tell. Juliet’s decision to retire from practicing criminal law to buy a speakeasy-type bar is completely out of character of who she was but fits exactly who she becomes throughout this story. She grows from a lonely workaholic with no time for a relationship to a fiercely protective partner with a soft and gooey inside.
Paige’s backstory is heartbreaking but her strength and perseverance keeps her from succumbing to the pain. This combination makes her a really appealing character. Add in her vulnerability when she sits at a piano and belts out tunes and my heart is captured. I just wish that I could hear her sing, just once!
The Hideout is real, raw, and emotional and takes readers on a journey through shame, vulnerability, self-discovery, loss, and love. The book deals with topics that might put some readers off but Tereze was careful in her handling of these topics. I was captivated from the first page and couldn’t put the book down because I needed to know how their story was going to end. Juliet and Paige’s story holds a special place in my heart and I am looking forward to their next installment.
Audiobook update: This powerful story is taken to a whole new level with K.A. Walsh’s narration. From Juliet’s sexy smoky voice to the heartwrenching emotions she infused into their most painful conversations, I was completely captivated by the story. I’ve read this book at least half a dozen times since its release last year but I honestly hung on Walsh’s every word. Experiencing the story through Walsh’s narration was like a gift as I was able to feel every emotion through her tone, emphasis, and pacing which made for an incredibly immersive listening experience.

Another great book by Melissa! This covered some difficult topics of DV (so be sure to check content warnings and other reviews before reading). I think it was done well and also with the same amazing story of age gap love that Melissa Does well. Paige struggles with self esteem and believing in herself because of her awful partner! Juliet helps to bring the best out in her by encouraging and protecting her. I tandem read with the audiobook, KA Walsh did a fantastic job as always. This book nearly had me sobbing at one point!! All the emotions!
It’s written in third person with 2x POV’s. Hot for the Boss, Age Gap, Starting Over, Femme/Femme, Workplace Romance. 6x Spicy Scenes.

3.5 ★ | Melissa Tereze is up there with the best of the best. This one fell short for me however. Considering how brilliant her other books are in comparison. I just couldn’t connect with this one as much as I wanted to and I know Tereze can blow my socks off.

I’m a Melissa Tereze fan, no doubt about that. Her stories always include some angsty situations that makes you crave and enjoy more the good side of the stories she writes.
This is a stand-alone book, but you find reference from a previous book, Discovery.
Juliet is a tough former lawyer who wants to change her path in life and buys a bar, she hires Paige to work for her as mixologist. Paige is on the run, she got married for the wrong reason to a person she never liked just to please an important person in her life. The meet and fireworks happen.
This book includes distressing scenes.

I received an ARC of this book from Melissa Tereze. An interesting plot with a few twists and turns. The Hideout is the name of the bar was very appropriate as it epitomised the premise of the story. A broken Paige, the mixologist, hiding from her abusive husband. I found James, the husband, to be the most despicable character of any books I have read. Gladly the story has a happy ending as I knew it must but still an age-gap romance with a pinch of disquiet and some angst. I recommend this book but suggest you don't have any valuable crockery at had that you may throw at the wall.

this was hot tho, it’s a membership only bar owner and then her mixologist, had an age gap, younger girls first time w woman 😯, and she’s leaving her man (because we can’t write about lesbians unless they had a husband or some other man in their life that pushed them to go gay)

If you have read Discovery by Melissa Tereze then you will already know a little about Juliet already. The Hideout is Juliet’s turn to shine.
I love the world that Melissa writes, all the characters that live in it and the journeys she takes us on. Dare I say, Melissa is a brilliant mixologist of lesbian romance.
If you want a book to take you on a heart wrenching journey with all the feels that you need, not to mention the amazing chemistry between the main characters then this is the book for you.
Do yourself a favour and get it, I doubt you will be disappointed.

For some reason, I did not connect at all with this book. I thought there was too many inconsistencies in the story line. I also thought it was too long and drawn out. I just didn't connect with it. It seems I might be in the minority here so take my review with a grain of salt.

I don't know many writers, who could write about such sad and controversial topic successfully.
I had to read it slowly, as, given the premise, I knew exatly where it would lead and dreaded every time I started a new section that things would go sideways within the next couple of pages ... and they did, but not the way I expected until the last third. So, yes, in a way this wasn't highly enjoyable on the emotional side, but an inredible experience of a caring and understanding approach and fantastic writing. If I was to have a say in this, I'd vote this for a 21st century classic in literature. I'll definitely buy the paper version for my top favourite shelf!

At her interview (displaying her talents) Paige and Juliet flirt. Her talents get her the job. James, the abusive husband is always in the mix, this will keep you riveted. The sex is hot, I give it 5 stars!

Once again, Melissa Tereze delivers a fantastic, angsty age-gap story. I will note that this book deals with off the page abuse so if you are sensitive to that, know that going in.
The Hideout features Juliet and Paige. Readers met Juliet in Discovery so it's great getting more of her story and seeing where her future goes. Both Juliet and Paige are looking for a new life away from the dangers and losses of their pasts. The characters are well developed and the supporting characters add to the dynamics or confidence of the MCs and evoked instant opinions, from me at least, in the like/dislike columns. While Juliet has confidence from her success as an attorney with Hannah as support, Paige lacks anyone who she trusts to be supportive of her. Tereze does a great job showing the highs and lows for Paige as she navigates her new life while trying to escape her old one. We get to see how caring Juliet is and how she's willing to do what is needed to protect those she cares about. When it comes to protecting people, Juliet rarely puts herself first but as the story unfolds, she gets some good advice that helps her figure out how to balance her needs with the needs of others.
If you like angsty, age-gap romances with characters who overcome their struggles, then don't miss out on this one.

Leave it to Melissa Tereze to get me out of a reading slump! Juliet and Paige had the sweetest romance with just the right amount of angst. I did feel like Hannah’s arrival into the story didn’t make much sense since she hadn’t really been mentioned all that much. But other than that ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Oh my god. This book was everything. It was my first book by Melissa Tereze because I just decided, at the time, to pick up her most recently published book. I received this from Kindle Unlimited. This book functions as a stand-alone, but does pick up a while after Discovery. However, the previous book, which I did read later on, was hard for me to connect with.
There were so many instances in this book where I wanted to cry. It’s not a sad book per se, but there are angsty moments. So many feels for Paige. I enjoyed Juliet’s character because I felt like she complemented Paige’s. They go through various conflicts and I loved it throughout. This deliciously steamy read was everything I wanted with a plot. Awesome first read. The sequel (which also can be a stand-alone because it is not about Paige or Juliet) is out A Little Light.

Wow,let me get my breath back a mo..
That was one hell of a roller coaster ride! So many twists and turns, ups and downs…god I hate roller coasters. This book however, i loved. I remember Juliet from the previous book so had an idea of what to expect from her. But it turns out she’s just a big marshmallow! And Paige well..she needed all that squishy stuff and the tuff outer shell that is Juliet.
It’s another great book that drags you into its embrace. It will keep you turning the pages and muttering “one more chapter” at 1am! Has everything you expect from a Tereze book and so much more. Plus a playlist that has some absolute crackers on it.
So, grab a brew and a blanket. Plonk yourself in a comfy chair and enjoy your time in The Hideout.

And Paige well..she needed all that squishy stuff and the tuff outer shell that is Juliet.
It’s another great book that drags you into its embrace. It will keep you turning the pages and muttering “one more chapter” at 1am! Has everything you expect from a Tereze book and so much more. Plus a playlist that has some absolute crackers on it.
So, grab a brew and a blanket. Plonk yourself in a comfy chair and enjoy your time in The Hideout.

The Hideout
Melissa Tereze is fabulous at age gap romances. I truly enjoyed this book and was happy to see the story of Juliet. The chemistry was amazing. I enjoy all of the books Melissa Tereze writes and look forward to more.

I couldn’t finish the book
This is a very sensitive subject that’s being addressed in this story. Author did a nice job of putting resources at the end that’s why I gave it 2 stars.
But this plot was not even remotely believable or engaging. It didn’t get me to hate the bad guy or even cheer for the main characters development. The dialogue just seemed so flat. Even the side characters were silly and didn’t add to the overall story.
I’ve read a few of these authors books and I’ve tried to give her writing style a chance. But I’m sorry to say these characters, when they talk and attempt to process their emotional journey, it’s like listening to naive 18 to 21 year olds stumble along. But both these characters are suppose to be much older and they seem like they are just emotionally held back. The way they spoke to each other was not sultry or sexy. No real banter or flirting. Just too clumsy for me.
It’s absolutely ridiculous that a former lawyer who is smart enough to have a high end business would allow her young very insecure lover to convince her otherwise… to convince her (I repeat a former lawyer) that she would be okay to go and see her physically abusive partner. On. Her. Own?!! Nope, I’m not buying it. And the plot twist with her friend. That twist was obvious early on and yet Juliet couldn’t put two and two together? She’s was a criminal lawyer. Oh sadness in that.
I mentally palmed my forehead during the end of the second act of this book. I couldn’t fully finish the book after that. I just skimmed to get to the epilogue.
Out of the other 3 books (At First Glance I was decent) I’ve read from this author this is to only one I couldn’t finish.

A Sensitive Topic Turning Terror Into Love!
Melissa Tereze tackles a very personal and sensitive topic. I was worried that it wouldn’t give the sensitive topic it’s due but it did. The storytelling takes you through to women who each have their own terror they are living. When Paige applies for a mixologist job, Juliet is not only taken with Paige’s skill but something else intrigued her. The Hideout is a exclusive membership only bar. Paige thinks with the bar’s cameras and the exclusivity, this would be the perfect place to be safe for awhile. At least until she figures things out. As the story reveals its layers, you can’t help feel for both these two women. But both are working with false safety and that can only lead to more trouble. Melissa uses her talent for writing very well in this one. It could have gone either way in its representation but I think she did a solid job.

An Incredible But Difficult Book
This is an amazing novel about a whirlwind age gap romance that also deals with a very difficult and sensitive topic - domestic violence. When Juliet hires Paige as the new mixologist for her bar, she quickly realizes she’s attracted to Paige as well. But Paige has been running from her abusive husband, James, for months now and she is terrified both that James will find her again and that he’ll harm anyone she cares for. This story is the journey of love and trust that bring Juliet and Paige together, a confrontation with domestic violence, and finds them both dealing with the aftermath of that violence going forward.
A wonderful, well written story that I’d recommend to anyone, with the caveat that the story does portray domestic violence.

A really strong story, with a heavy issue, handled with sensitivity and respect. Well done!

The heavy issue of domestic violence is well written and handled perfectly, including the content warning before a specific chapter.
I found the MCs are a bit too perfect... Insecurity is not a flaw when portrayed like this, so that meant the MCs were a bit flat.
The supporting cast was uninteresting as it was given so little space and not enough depth.
The ending was complicated for me because, despite several hints, nothing untoward happened with the suspicious side character. But alas, we never get any closure on that aspect of the plot.
However, the book was still very good and quite romantic.

Melissa Tereze is fast becoming one of my go to authors; you know when you pick up one of her titles that you are going to have a good read.
The Hideout features Juliet from Discovery and although it would be nice to have read this first to know more of her background, it is not essential to enjoy this book. The book does come with a warning about the inclusion of domestic violence and if readers are particularly sensitive to this these parts can easily be skipped. Apart from these brief scenes the book is very entertaining and enjoyable with a happy ending.

A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE OF EMOTIONS
Excellent writing and a fantastic story! Domestic abuse is foreign to me personally, however reading about it makes me furious that certain men feel they must be violent and controlling with their wives or significant others. I’ve heard it said about a few women on women as well.
How could anyone be so insecure within themselves that they resort to hitting someone they claim to love?
This was a beautiful story of two broken women finding true love and acceptance. I cried through much of it…

It’s okay —
I’ve been on a romance kick and decided to search out some sapphic stories with this being the first one I decided to read. While I like the story line, the way it’s written throws me off.
I love a good dual pov and this has it, but to the extent it will change midway through a chapter and it’s not always clear who’s doing what. Which for me made it hard to get immersed in the story.
I’m also a fan of the smut and this one starts as kind of a slow burn in that aspect. (Possible spoiler) You get a little taste at the beginning but the MCs don’t get down to business until about half way through.

The Hideout features the story of Juliet from Discovery. Juliet has recently left her carrier as a lawyer and now own a members only bar, The Hideout, where she hires Paige as a mixologist. Their attraction is instant but Paige can’t stay in one place for too long. There’s a warning that domestic violence is discussed and if you are weary rest assured that is not depicted on page. Other than that, you can find the Melissa Tereze staple, an angsty, steamy age gap. Happy reading, it’s a good’un.
