Pacific Pack

Rate this book
A pack's honor in question. A werewolf leader off on her own. A reporter trying to get to the bottom of a story. Can they get past the monsters to let another into their hearts?

Tamsin Hath, the rightful leader to her family’s werewolf pack, left them in the care of her older, more experienced beloved uncle. She now lives in Chicago and is at the mercy of the local pack. The death of her uncle in a dominance fight left her angry, but she understood. When her aunt was found dead, due to supposed natural causes, Tamsin suspects her pack’s new leader is at the bottom of it all. Unable to count on the police, with their lack of insight into the werewolf world, to whom can she turn?

Paige Glass spent her days monitoring the beaches of Santa Cruz and her nights reporting on crime. On the trail of information into a local murder, she finds herself in a world people only read about in books. One in which vicious beasts attack you for coming too close to the truth. Can she find an ally in this world of monsters and murders?

Neither Tamsin nor Paige was looking for love when they found each other. Theirs was a mission to solve the murder of Tamsin’s aunt. Will their forced proximity and conjoined efforts bring them more than the pleasure of solving the crime?

Good read!
Not the best start but still enjoyable concept and even readable with this book #1 of the 'Coastal Pack' series.

This book took me by surprise. I fell face first into this world. Tamsin is looking for who killed her family, she ends up finding more mystery & intrigue. She moved away to Chicago to get as far from werewolf pack politics as she could. Being back & dominant isn't helpful for this should be alpha. She's used to being the lone wolf, but the pack isn't through with her. Family & pack bonds are a strong theme, but so is the pull she feels towards Paige. Add in a loose werewolf killing the indiscriminately and you have one heck of a tale. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I was given an advanced copy for an honest review.

As of the 20% mark, which is where I tapped out of this novel, the two MCs have yet to meet. In my opinion, MCs should almost always meet in the first chapter; we don’t really NEED a prerequisite “day in the life” chapter before we get to the meat of the story. The book should start when the story does, you know? I’m willing to overlook it if they meet a little bit later, so long as the rest of the plot and narration is working for me, but this one wasn’t.

Book needs an editor, stat. Proofread! Flashbacks can’t decide between 1st or 3rd person POV. Outside of flashbacks, I caught an “I” that should’ve been a “she”, and a wandering/wondering mixup. Two different chapters begin almost the same way, with the MC tucking her graded papers in her bag. That should’ve been a clue that the plot was not moving along.

The narrative voice is dull. Each sentence states exactly what is happening, with no attempt at metaphor or simile, no extraneous or exciting words, and not much of an attempt to vary sentence length and structure to suit the mood of the scene. Both MCs are attacked and wounded in separate incidents in the beginning of the novel, and those scenes are no more pulse-pounding than the ones where they’re going to work or making phone calls or finding out a relative has died.

At this point, despite the “day in the life” scenes from each of them, I feel I know very little about these two MCs except for their work, which is boring, and I don’t care what happens to them. It’s a no from me, dawg.

Very good

I enjoyed the book very much. I think the writing style fit me to a tee. I really connected to the MCs. I am going to read the next book and hopefully there will be more in the series.

PACIFIC PACK starts out rough and unfortunately between the simplistic writing style and the completely unrealistic behaviors of the MCs I'm going to have to pass on this.

Brain candy. Fun fantasy genre - lesbian werewolves and witches. Pretty formulaic.

It took me a couple of chapters to get into the story, but once I did I couldn't put it down.
Tamsin is a lone werewolf living in Chicago. She teaches high school English and is personal trainer. Her aunt is found dead and Tamsin goes back to Santa Cruz to find out what happened and take care of her estate. While there she has to deal with her old pack.
Paige is a journalist who also works as life guard. She is sent to investigate an animal attack on a tourist. Who would have thought that this assignment would change her life forever.
I received an arc for my honest review

This is a werewolf story that conforms to little of the typical tropes for this type of story. And not in a good way unfortunately. It felt like a werewolf story written by someone who had never read or watched anything about werewolves before.

Stars: 2.5
Format: Digital
Series: Coastal Pack Book 1
Steam Level: Steamy

This is a shifter romance that is what I’d call Omegaverse light. It has Alphas, a kind of Omega that they call Submissives, “normal” people who would be called Betas in a full on Omegaverse story, and witches who (from what I understand from only one book) fall outside all these categories.

Quick Thoughts:
- Romance felt super fast, it’s basically a Fated Mates story
- Hey Santa Cruz! Since I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I visited that area a lot so that was fun
- The Big Dramatic bits felt a bit rushed and kinda anticlimactic
- Tamsin didn’t come off as how smart she was written to be. Believing the witch at the market, looking for the address book in the bedroom, not realizing that saying not full truths can be told that aren’t technically lies (she worked with high school students for goodness sake)
- It felt like Tamsin rushed to exact justice instead of taking time to learn more of the bad things that happened so she’d know the extent of what she’d have to deal with
- I was surprised that more wasn’t done/discussed/inquired about what happened to Paige before she met Tamsin
- Interesting world building and I’m interested to see it built upon

Overall not a bad read, it just needed a bit more work to smooth out the story, it’s why I knocked off half a star. But I did enjoy this enough to purchase the next book already, I want to see what happens with the other characters.

I try not to absolutely flame books as a general rule, but I am so confused about why this book has so many good reviews. The writing was choppy and disjointed, I was very confused as to what emotional connection was supposed to be there between the main characters, and I kept getting pulled out of the story by stuff that was described differently paragraph to paragraph. I can generally overlook a host of writing quality issues if I feel like the characters are well done, but they did not feel realistic or likeable. She tried to use a mix of werewolf tropes but gave no indication of how they all fit together. There were multiple logical gaps where I had no idea how the characters had come to their con lusions. There was absolutely no description of the setting in a way that located it in Santa Cruz, except for a mention of the Boardwalk (but no description of it at all, which is something you can Google even if you don't live there). The spicy scenes felt rushed and lacked descriptive details, enough that I could not follow what body parts were going where. By the end I only finished it out of stubbornness.

The bones of this were okay but it was so short that everything felt so rushed. No character or relationship development, no significant chemistry - and I was a bit sad it didn’t rely more on established shifter tropes.

Lacking

The writing style is plain and repetitive. There’s a few typos. The story isn’t thrilling like it should be with these kinds of plot devices.

4 / 5 Stars

Depending on what it is that you expect and / or hope to get from this book, you'll:
EITHER walk away having had a good time.
OR you'll wish you spend it reading something else.
My rating might tell you where I fall on that spectrum, but that doesn’t mean I liked how certain things were handled.

I might add a Spoiler Part. Or I might not. On the one hand, I hate how multible suicides were handled - or rather, not handled- in the book. And I'd love to leave a long rant review about that. But on the other hand, I've got to realise that I can't truly argue my points without spoiling what exactly I had issues with. So I'll just stay vague for now and say:
execution, normalization & weight, to name a few of my concerns. I have more, but again, might be too spoiler-y.

With that out of the way: The romance was the Highlight of the book. Both of our leads are great characters, with struggles on their own, with motives, lifes, fears and needs, that are actually important to them. Finding somone attractive is nice and all, but I hate when characters or romances with werwolves bring nothing else to the table because: "tHe wOlVE waS aTraCTed tO tHem". It's horrible writing if you ask me. Not a fan of lust at first sight. So lucky for me, this isn't that kind of book. There are multiple sex scenes, but they felt earned. I believed their connection, their attraction and I was on board with their dynamic. Truly wholesome, cute & healthy. <3

If you came for other reasons though, well.
The world is great, no complains there. I already got my hands on book 2 and am looking forward to seeing more of the cast, pack and city.

Especially since it's not a mystery this time. No spoilers, but, the conclusion to the "who killed the ant" mystery wasn't that grest. Neither were the fights. We were building them up since the start, leading me to believe that I should expect something epic, just for the fight to be over in about 5 sentences. Kinda anti-climactic if you asked me.

So yeah, wordlbuilding, romance and characters: top.
Action & Murder Mystery: flop.

Final Thoughts:

Looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

A Pack's Honor in Question. Harlowe Frost wrote a thrilling paranormal romance that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end. Frost skillfully weaves together a tale of werewolf politics, murder mystery, and a steamy romance that is sure to leave readers wanting more. I love that it takes a different spin on the usual fated mate path and went with creating bonds that grow into something unbreakable.

The story follows Tamsin, a werewolf alpha who finds herself at odds with her former pack's leader after the suspicious death of her aunt. Enter Paige Glass, a reporter who stumbles upon the werewolf world while investigating a local murder. Together, Tamsin and Paige must navigate the world of werewolves and unravel the mystery behind the death of Tamsin's aunt.

Frost does an excellent job of building tension throughout the story, and the romance between Tamsin and Paige is both sizzling and heartwarming. The characters are well-developed and complex, with each having their own motivations and desires. The werewolf world is fascinating and intricately crafted, making it easy for readers to become fully immersed in the story.

Overall, Pacific Pack is a captivating read that will appeal to fans of both paranormal romance and mystery novels. Frost has set the bar high with this first book in the Coastal Pack series, and readers will be eagerly anticipating the next installment. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a thrilling and satisfying read. I received this as an ARC copy and my review is honest to how I felt about the story. I am actively looking forward to the next in the series.

There is something to be said about a story that you can't put down, and end up reading from start to finish in one sitting. Enjoyable and engrossing is definitely a good start.

Investigating the murder of her aunt, Tamsin, a loner alpha, and Paige, a reporter who suddenly finds herself thrust into their world, find that working together might bring more than either had expected. And with the old pack falling apart, things not necessarily as it seems, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

There is a lot of familiar werewolf tropes here, and well as some different takes, and it will be interesting to see where the setting goes as the series develops. I like what is presented in this book, and it works well, and gives rise to an intriguing setting.

Tamsin and Paige are both loveable characters, and watching their relationship grow was definitely rewarding. The teasing and pining, the want and reluctance. But once the threshold is met and crossed, there's no going back.

It's an enjoyable and cute werewolf tale. It may feel light in places, but that isn't a bad thing. It's an easy read, and one that is easy to recommend, and I look forward to reading the other books in the series as they come out.

Pacific Pack by Harlowe Frost takes you into the world of Tamsin Hath, who has been a lone werewolf for a few years since leaving her pack and moving to a different city. Through a series of events Tamsin returns to her hometown to sort some family affairs where she becomes acquainted with Paige Glass, a crime reporter and recently turned werewolf.

The main characters of Tamsin and Paige were interesting and grow on you as you progress through the book. The pack dynamics seemed a bit lacking, as I would have expected more team cohesion. I am hoping this comes in book 2.

The version of the book I read could have benefitted from another edit. I received an ARC copy of this book for my honest review.

This is actually my first sapphic werewolf read and I really enjoyed it. I genuinely liked the main characters, and their chemistry was fantastic. They are witty, sexy, and mature. Clever banter, honest communication, and great spice make them a sweet and entertaining pair. I like the pack dynamics and the murder mystery. Some details were a bit gruesome. It didn't really detract; I was just unsuspecting. I like the author's style and I would read more in this series. This novel can stand alone.

It's good.

The rhythm and the writing create a turn pages. It shows u part of that world, the past, the hierarchy inside the packs and the covens, how they establish relationships between each other and the two perspective narrative give u a different point of view of all that.

The relationship between Paige and Tamsin is dinamic, cheesy and cute. They are mates even if that word is not use in the book directly.

I'm excited for the next ones, hopefully we could see more of the witch covens, the rest of the wolfs in the pacific pack and how the pacific pack is currently working now.

I enjoyed this somewhat short book. It’s an easy read albeit with some dark moments. There is some violence and death, but that happens, especially in fantasy novels with werewolves and other such creatures. The violence is not gratuitous, at least in my opinion, but moves the story along. There is also grief, reconciliation and romance, and an ending that promises more to come for the characters.

This is my first sapphic werewolf urban fantasy novel. It is book one of seven in the Coastal Pack series by Harlowe Frost. A cute and eventually spicy story about an alpha lone wolf vs. a newly-turned submissive werewolf, both trying to find their place within their pack and their relationship.

Recommend if you’re looking for a fun, quick read with some sapphic spice!

First thing I noticed was the cover on KU says “Costal Pack” but the series is called “Coastal Pack” and on GoodReads the cover shows it spelled correctly.

I made it to 7% and honestly I’m just not feeling it. There’s something, I don’t know, I can’t put my finger on it.
