Just before an incredibly strong CME crippled the world, Dave Sellier, his girlfriend, Julie, and a hand-picked group of friends began building a strong community at Dave’s farm outside the town of Tazewell, Tennessee.
Soon after the event, three wannabe dictators make a power grab for control of the isolated town, its residents, and its resources by imposing their idea of a local form of martial law, with some success.
When threats are made against Dave, Julie, and their entire community by the new regime, the ex-warfighters there don’t take kindly to it.
Will they stand and defend themselves and their families, or will they do what warriors do?
There’s really only one way to find out, but rest assured that once again, David Saylor proves his ability to weave an incredible tale.
As I enjoy dystopian literature, this series was an easy pick for me. However, I was not expecting to like it so much and to be so unhappy when I finished the last book. The character development (of the main folks) is adequate, although it could be a little deeper. It is enough that you get the feeling that these could be friends you'd want to hang out with. The storyline is very realistic and considering everything going on now, a likely scenario should a CME happen. I was glad that the author finally explained where Dave got his money (in the first book) as I was wondering how he was able to afford all he was doing. You don't get lost in all the details as these help you better understand attitudes and actions within the plotlines. Now, I am anxiously waiting for the third book to be published so I can continue keeping up with what feels like my new friends. For me, this is a well written series anx worth your time reading.
I didn’t actually read half of it. I just kept swiping past all the details on the guns. Boring and added nothing to the story. I almost stopped reading it when I realized it was about people who hated people who believe in the constitution being for ALL people and not just white Christians but thought maybe I’d learn something about why they felt that way. I didn’t learn anything beyond they believe conspiracy theories with no proof. What I did learn is this author believes being “woke” or “liberal” is evil. That they use people to gain control. Since this is the same thing I believe about conservatives, maybe we are all actually alike and instead of fighting each other we should be fighting and questioning the people in power. The 1% who control everything. Anyhow, as far as the book goes, the details on weapons was overkill and repetitive and there is no way 12 people could have accomplished all they did. Furthermore, the 3 million he got dealing with foreign criminals would never have bought all he said he had.
Finally, a book filled with hope and not with "wokeness". This is a great story, character driven and full of people who make the " right choices". God is celebrated, as is love for each other. I was happy to read a book where the author did not feel the need to define the Characters by race. Finally a book where our heroes are defined by their actions and their consciences. I cannot wait for the next one!!! Any chance of an Audible version???
So many redeeming qualities to this novel! I loved the farm crew taking care of Pops! They utilized his knowledge and skills to allow him to feel needed and useful! I fell in love with him immediately! Charlie is one of my favorite characters so far! I know her story is coming and I want to stay on this reading journey for her. I do love Mary! I think some of the characters needed a little more development so they aren’t stilted. Julie has been developing but still growing into her role. Dave is a complex character who needs something to make him feel more real. He is the hero with all the ideas, money, equipment and responsibility who has a faith in God but it all feels on the surface! The writing feels like he is going through the motions. All the army ranger planning of the same plan over and over was a bit tedious for me.
The author makes you genuinely care for the characters. You feel like they’ve become your actual family and friends. Who can’t fall in love with “The Old Man” (Pop)? Or with Mary and Bear? Dave and Julie reminded me that all the resources in the world mean nothing without family and friends to share them with. And that your community is what it’s all about. I’ll admit, even as a guy, I cried a couple of times while reading. And I never cry. Can’t wait for #3. The only thing I can ask is PLEASE don’t wait 3 months to release the next book. Of it was released today I’d start reading it right now. Now I’ll have to re-read #1 and #2. Glad I bought instead of borrowed.
Book Review: “THE DARKNESS GROWS (As The Light Dies Book 2)” Kindle Edition by David Saylor (Author), Boyd Craven Jr. (Author) Book 2 picks up immediately after Book 1 so it is important to read them in sequence. In spite of the grave nature of the situation, David Saylor manages to inject some humor into the proceedings at times. The last chapter has a heart-warming scenario that I appreciated. I am a military veteran but Saylor has a far greater knowledge of weapons than I ever did! I used the Microsoft Bing search engine to find pictures of some of them. When “Book 3” is published in the summer of 2023, I plan to read it.
I love the genre but I don’t know what to say about this book. It’s not a Christian book but there are strong overtures to the faith. It isn’t really a typical dystopia novel, although it is definitely dystopian. It is not a tier one operator novel, but there are definite tier one similarities, particularly in the area of weapons as one of the authors must be for military or a weapons fanatic. It’s not a prepper novel, however, it definitely provides lots of prepper info. So the question is did I enjoy it? I did, but I would’ve liked perhaps a little more action and a little less on the way over the top details around weapons and munitions.
If this book doesn’t open your eyes and/or scare the peesnoodley out of you, you’re not going to read it anyway. Do I wish I had his resources? Of course. Do I? Of course not. Scary, disgusting in parts, (maybe because some of this is actually already happening) and horrifying, I would like to think it would open some eyes. Dave takes on the idea that some people think they can do anything.
While this author writes well, this series is extremely dark and focuses on pedufilia as a main storyline. He also focuses on hardright conspiracy theories which if someone isn't aware of current affairs could be believable. I gave it 2 stars because he does write well, just very dark. However I won't be reading any further books by him for the the above reasons.
A detailed study of what it takes and costs to be prepared. Materials and a location is only the beginning. It all comes down to the people, training and commitment. The more you look the more you realize that one person can’t think/afford it all.
Worth the wait! Another nail biting tale of friends, family, soldiers, war and love.
A fascinating read of a group of friends and family, facing an apocalypse and coming together to survive and prosper. Amazing attention to detail with all of the military hardware and prepper infrastructure.
I really liked the books. But the author needs to take some of the criticism to heart and learn from it I believe he can make this a great story to read. Over description over and over of the weapons kept slowing the story. To little action to make this a fun book to read. Please learn and write great books.
The book was boring, repetitive and very bloody. For the above reasons it was not a very enjoyable read. Despite all the religious and bible references, the overly bloody scenes made me wonder whether the writers were true followers of the entire bible, especially the New Testament.
Usual trite formula, Conservative army vet builds a secret bunker stocked with lots of guns, bunch of vets abd gun nuts join him, then the lights go out. Evil liberals in cohoots with gangsters take over local town. Guy and his friends go and save the day. To much Lib v Dem and Christian v Non believers. Very black and white.

This book definitely shines a light on a subject that always gets not much coverage while it happens everyday right here in America, child trafficking. This book is full of action. The faith base is a nice change addition to this type of book. Thanks for adding it in.
Dave, the Farm and ‘his’ people. A winning combination. I can’t wait to see how their plans unfold!
A worthwhile book and excellent writing. This book makes you feel there can be a future despite the horrors of this disaster. It reminds you of the ways of an American Life. We are genius!
I really love this book. I love the fact the characters were good people that went after the evil in their town. There is nothing more horrible and evil that rape and Sodomize children. I love the characters Dave, Julie, Charlie, Mary and Bear and all the others on the team. Looking forward to book 3.
Great follow up to book 1. I am definitely hooked, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. The characters are great, and the action is intense . For me, it is great escapism, and fun reading.
This was a fast action paste end of world scenario. The characters are very real. The situations that they were in seems very possible. Look forward to Book 3.
Well written and intriguing. Situation s are very realistic. Interaction between characters is great. The author knows his subject and communicates it well. Can't wait for next book to be published..
Oh I am enjoying this series so much. It is different from what I have been reading. These are the type of people you would want around you if something like this happened. Here’s to the Farm.
While there was way too much info on guns for me, I understood how much it was needed to flesh out the action. But the characters and story lines were Perfect!!!
I've been a CRAVEN fan for a while ( multiple generations) and now I'm a SAYLOR fan too!!!
It goes a little too far into weapons for me, describing all the different types and ammo, and whatever. I do like the characters, and the main story, but I'm just not into the details of weapons and skimmed those sections.
Another good prepper book. I definitely hope society does not breakdown into such depravity. But the hero’s won and hopefully will build a better society based on kindness to mankind!!
Good read. Enjoyed it completely looking forward to the next book.
Enjoyed the book and kept my interest through out looking forward to the next in the series. The lead up to the action is a little drawn out but the book still reads well
I really appreciate the storyline in this book. I enjoyed the characters and loved the ending. If you're looking for a different version of end of the world as we know it this is it. A definite recommend.
