Knowing that they hadn't saved all the slaves when they'd rescued Stann, Jack and the Misfits are heading back to the strange new continent to finish the job.
But facing a society of power hungry mages isn't a simple task. The team will have to continue to grow stronger and discover more of the secrets of mana while relying on their teammates to conquer this new challenge, all the while collecting data and power to make Darkthorn Academy the most powerful academy in the world.
This is a coming-of-age, sword and sorcery fantasy adventure with gamelit aspects, including a slightly overpowered MC, a dragon companion, and a team of adventurers. Inspired by games like Skyrim and Diablo 2 and Fallout.
Fight scenes are micromanaged and makes for great speed reading
The team is split up busy being heroes and eating. At this point the number of side characters is a bit overwhelming especially when the writers feel the need to fill half a page with name filler in all its word count glory. A lot of these books are about food. You have meat, meat and veggies, meat and veggies on a stick " I think they just like to say the word kabob" stir fry, stew, and soup. Note these are all the same thing just with varying amounts of water added to it. These guys are in serious need of pasta.
I found this to be the most boring book in the series. I found the premise of the four of them going off to stop slavery in another kingdom stupid. They have so many things to do around the new academy and exploring the wasteland. But they just abandoned it thinking oh well it’ll work out. The big battle with the dragons might have been interesting but no details of it. Just the aftermath. And then he doesn’t even go looking for his brother. I think they’ve got a little egotistical about what they can do. Like going after the slavers without backup. Or the witch without backup because that always ends well. Still trying to decide if I’ll get the next book
There were parts of this book that I enjoyed, but overall I didn’t really like the story, especially their plan to stop the slavers, which was just ridiculous to start with and riddled with stupid decisions. The story has become too contrived as the author tries to make things fit together, perhaps while hoping the readers have forgotten what he has already written. Also he seems to be caught in the trap of having to make everything bigger, 'badder' and more numerous e.g. hundreds of Dragons and thousands upon thousands of Oompahs.
i like this writer. these later books in this series are not as exciting to me for some reason, not sure if it is because the team seems to be all going their own way and the author is focusing on growth of single characters at a time... just not sure. i went thru it quickly cause i like all the characters and the settings he works in. Just did not seem to like it as much as the first several in the series. I cannot pin point why either. sorry.
Freedom from slavery is something the team can get behind.
As they further explore the old continent, they learn that many a nefarious mage has used their power to gain wealth and political power. As they delve deeper into the morass of an industrial society, they find that corruption runs much deeper than any could imagine.
Great tale with well developed characters and scenes. Just as your getting into it, one of the MC always seems too pull a boneheaded action that the author leaves hanging. Other than that, a good read.
Writing for my 9-year-old son: I really liked the amount of thought and detail that the author put in to how he did the magic and combat. It could have been more simple, but he did a great job. I did not like the amount of profanity in the book.
Definitely can’t wait to see where it goes from here! It’s not often I can’t put one down, but I’m up to teeth grinding ready for book 8. Hang on tight!
I think every reader needs to start doing this to force authors to write a quick Recap chapter, which readers can skip if they remember, and those who don't won't stop reading the series.
Totally enjoyed it! This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
Another great installment in the lives and trials of the Misfits! The Darkthorn Academy series is still as amazing now in the seventh book as it was in the first. More please!
