A very well written story! I listened to the Audiobook and the narrator was wonderful!

This book is about grief and coming to terms with it and moving on. Anna has lost her husband 3 years ago and is struggling one New Year's Eve. She decides to call his cell phone just to listen to his voice on the greeting one last time. She is shocked when someone else answers it and so the story unfolds as she begins to form a friendship with the new person.

The character of Anna was well developed and I could feel her every emotion. This was a story that I was deeply immersed in and could not stop listening until the very end. My eyes welled up towards the ending but it's not totally heart wrenching. Serious subject matter for sure but also full of hope and satisfaction.

I'd like to kindly thank NetGalley and Harper Audio for granting me access of this Advanced recording.

This is a women's fiction. In the beginning I did not think I was going to like this book. I have to say the beginning was hard for me to get into, but once I got pulled into it I could not put it down. Anna lost her husband, Spencer, and she is having trouble moving on. His mother is being not very nice to her, and she calls his old phone number to hear the message for when his phone is not answer. She is shocked when someone answers the phone. This book is about two people that is going through something so hard to get through, and they meet by a shocking phone call. They are there for each other and hopes each other through the dark times. This book was really about the light at the end of a very dark road of life. I loved the characters and the storyline in this book. I really love the ending. Wow... The ending was everything, but the whole book was great as well. I think this book maybe my new favorite book. I loved it so much. I listen to the audiobook for this book, and the narrator was really good, and I loved the audiobook. I was kindly provided an e-audiobook of this book by the publisher (William Morrow Paperbacks) or author (Fiona Lucas) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.

tw: multiple death of loved ones; panic attacks

I love a good grief story and this follows both a woman who lost her husband 3 years ago and a man who has also experienced loss, and they connect via phone and form a relationship from there. I am realizing that I actually do not like the "friendship formed over phone, mail, etc" trope. While I enjoyed the exploration of later stage grief, as well as Brody's experience of panic and agoraphobia, I mostly found the story slow. I also realize I have a hard time resonating with romances where they do not even meet until the end.

4.5 ⭐️ story about a woman coming to terms with loss. I will preface by saying that if you have experienced a loss and are still struggling with the emotions of it, read with caution.

Anna lost her husband tragically three years ago, and now she is just going through the motions of having a life. She is trying not to worry those around her some of whom, like her best friend Gabi, are pushing her to move on and fall in love again and feel things that she is clearly not ready for. Her parents have moved to another country and she doesn’t want to worry them either. On the opposite spectrum, her mother-in-law Gayle is still mourning her son’s loss in such a way that she seems to be trying to compete with Anna’s feelings of loss. But most importantly in all of those relationships is Anna’s with herself, she is not coping and it’s heartbreaking. He was the love of her life and without him, she has shut down.

One New Years, she calls his phone to hear his voice on the voicemail and is surprised when someone answers, only to find that her husbands phone has been reassigned. She soon begins a friendship with the new owner Brody, who although he can relate to her loss and is so helpful to her psyche, is not forthcoming with the details of his own loss.

This is a lovely story and I really felt the reality of all of the characters although I have to say Brody was a bit underdeveloped to me, I wanted to know him a bit more. The audiobook was really great, even though there was only one narrator, Antonia Beamish did a really bang up job of bringing life to all of the voices. I found myself eager to get time for a walk and allow myself to continue the story and got to the point where I was just sitting listening to it at length.

I loved that Fiona Lucas really addressed that grief is different for everyone and gave value to that and showed how that realization occurred to each character in the book 👏. Although heart-wrenching to hear their stories and not frothy and light, it wasn’t all serious all the time and I really enjoyed listening to it and loved Anna’s character and felt like she was a friend and I was happy to follow along on her journey!

I +++ recommend you give this audiobook or the physical copy a try when it publishes on June 8th 2021, to see if you could say goodbye ❤️

**Thank-you to NetGalley and Harper Audio for the advance reader copy of this lovely audiobook**

I really enjoyed The Last Goodbye. The story is very interesting and kept me invested the whole time. I was invested in Anna’s life from the beginning. It is tragic that Anna lost her husband, but I enjoyed how she is working to figure out how to move on and be happy without forgetting him. She is trying not to hurt anyone’s feelings or lose anyone in her life. Anna is struggling with what to do and doesn’t feel like her friends and family understands. When Brody answers Spencer’s old number, Anna now has someone that understands her. Brody has experienced a loss in his life but also has secrets. I enjoyed Anna and Brody’s friendship developing even when they didn’t know each other’s last names or what they looked like. Brody is a very interesting character, so I enjoyed learning about his life too. The Last Goodbye is emotional and a great story.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Antonia Beamish and thought she did a great job. The narration added fit well with the story, and I’m glad I listened to the audiobook.

I recommend The Last Goodbye for fans of Jojo Moyes and Josie Silver.

Thank you Harper Audio, William Morrow and NetGalley for The Last Goodbye.

A book about loss, grief, and mental health, The Last Goodbye is the emotional read I didn't know I needed right now, but one I'm so glad I experienced.

Normally, this time of year, I gravitate towards lighter, feel-good books---beach reads, if you will. But The Last Goodbye is nothing like that. It's poignant, emotional, and for much of the book, heartbreaking. The two main characters, Anna and Brody, are crippled by sorrow and trapped in a perpetual state of mourning loved ones. But there is also healing, discovering light at the end of a dark tunnel, and eventually, a second chance at love and happiness.

The Last Goodbye reminded me of P.S. I Love You and After You, so if you're a fan of these books, I highly recommend giving it a try.

*Thank you William Morrow for the gifted book *

The Last Goodbye is a story about grief, or at least that's the main focus. It's a subject that's covered quite frequently in books and therefore it can be difficult to find a story that feels unique. While certain themes in this book are familiar, it did feel like somewhat new ground was explored in the story. And that's what tipped the scales for me in terms of how I came up with my rating.

I often forget the synopsis of a book by the time it arrives in my hand and so I went into this read basically without a clue. And that meant I was actually surprised a few chapters in with the phone call. I was baffled until the explanation was given and then I was like, "duh, why didn't I figure that out on my own?". Feel free to check out the publisher description of the book, but honestly I think you are good to go with knowing the bare minimum which is Anna's husband, Spencer, was killed in an accident about 3 years ago. She does not feel ready to step back into the dating world.

There are two things that stood out for me with the story. The first one being Anna's relationships with her in-laws. I felt for every character, (Yes, even that one. If you've read the book, you'll figure it out.) because it really is such a difficult situation for everyone. The dynamics of the relationships really enhanced the story. I also love what the author did with Brody. Trying not to divulge too much but his storyline involved things that typically are reserved for female fictional characters. That's not at all realistic in the real world and I'm thankful the author recognized that is an issue both males and females might deal with.

I believe I won a copy of this book in a giveaway so thank you to the publisher for sending it to me! All thoughts expressed are my honest opinion.

Such a sweet, heartfelt book. I loved every minute I spent with Anna and Brody, even though some of it was heart-wrenching and difficult.
If you've ever experienced loss of any kind, you realize how much it can break you and how grief affects different people in completely different ways. Anna and Brody are both well acquainted with loss and the solace they find in talking with each other is really beautiful.
There were parts of this story that made me angry, because I didn't think that a particular character was handling things the way I thought they should. Yet when I stopped to think about it, each journey was just right for that character. When the ending arrived I felt very satisfied with how each storyline concluded.
I partially listened to the audio book and partially read a print copy. The narrator is fantastic and her way of communicating the voices of each character really made me connect with them in a deeper way.
Highly recommended if you like emotional romantic tales.

I voluntarily reviewed complimentary copies of both the audio and print versions of this book. All opinions are my own.

The Last Goodbye by Fiona Lucas deserved 4.5 strong stars rounded down from 5 stars in my opinion. I listened to the audiobook of The Last Goodbye by Fiona Lucas. It was expertly narrated by Antonia Beamish. Fiona Lucas had written other books under the pen name of Fiona Harper but this is the first book of hers that I have had the opportunity to read. She is an author, though, that I will be on the lookout for in the future. I was lured into the story immediately and never lost interest throughout the entire book. The Last Goodbye was captivating and poignant. Where it could have been sad or even depressing,I found it to be uplifting and even inspiring. The Last Goodbye was a character driven book that centered around kind, hopeful, honest, caring, truthful and believable characters. It was about love, loss and forgiveness. The different stages of grieving were explored as well as how the realities of how death could trigger mental health issues. It was about how to “move on” after experiencing a devastating loss and how to learn to love again.

Anna had lost her beloved husband almost three years prior as the story began. Spencer, her loving husband, had died tragically as the result of a horrific drunk driver accident. He was only 31 when he was taken from Anna. Spencer had been on his way to get something from the local store when he was struck. Anna blamed herself. Why did she insist that he go to the store at that time? Why didn’t she call Spencer back and ask him to get something else or why hadn’t she run into the hall and given him a kiss before he left? If she had done any of those things she could have altered the time he left and perhaps prevented him from getting struck by the drunk driver. Anna had to learn to live with the reality that Spencer was gone. Even after almost three years, Anna still missed Spencer tremendously though and was not ready to “move on” with her life.

Anna’s best friend Gabby had talked Anna into going to a New Year’s Eve party. Gabby even introduced Anna to a charming and handsome man. Anna found him to be good-looking and even bright but he was not Spencer. Before the ball was to drop and usher in the New Year, Anna made excuses and left the party. Once she was home and safe she climbed into her bed and decided to call Spencer’s cell number just to hear his voice. To her surprise a man’s voice was heard on the connection but it was not Spencer’s recorded greeting. Spencer’s cell number had been reassigned to a man named Brody. Anna began to pour her heart out to this stranger. She realized that he listened to her without judging her. Brody understood her. Their conversations became more frequent and lasted longer as they got to know each other over the phone. They both shared a loss that was hard to move on from. Brody and Anna understood what each other was feeling and how hard it was to navigate around those feelings. It was beautiful to witness how they helped each other become stronger and how they helped each other learn to love again and overcome their fears.

The Last Goodbye by Fiona Lucas was a beautiful book that touched every one of my emotions. I found myself laughing, crying and sometimes just smiling. The concept for this book was brilliant and it was one of those books that made you feel so good and restored your faith in people. Everyone grieves differently but wouldn’t it be nice to have a “Brody” who understood what you were feeling and just listened without judging? I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook of The Last Goodbye. I was almost sad when it ended because I was so vested in the characters and their outcomes that I didn’t want it to end. I highly recommend this book.

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The Last Goodbye just tugged on my teeny tiny heart strings. In it, you will meet Anna and she is a very interesting character. She lost the love of her life, Spencer, and calls his number just to hear his voice. I honestly have no idea what I would do if I was in her shoes.. but the way she is coping with this awful situation seems kind of normal. At least to me.

So one day she calls the number and is expecting his lovely voice.. but then someone actually picks up. Now at this point, I probably would've screamed and hung up. Just because I'm extremely awkward and probably would've shat my pants. Especially when you aren't expecting someone to pick up. So yeah.. that most definitely would've happened if it was me.

Between you and me, I loved Anna and Brody because they could both lean on another and heal. The one thing I didn't like was how damn pushy her in-laws were. I wanted to punch them when they were like.. you can't be happy now that he's dead and gone. Uh, no.. that's not how this works.

Everyone grieves and heals in their own way. Which this book did a great job diving into that. It just bugged the heck out of me when people would say Anna wasn't doing it right. There is no right or wrong way to any of this. So, yeah, some things frustrated me but the overall book was really good.

This was a slooow read for me. I did enjoy some of the dialogue, but it didn't always succeed in keeping my attention. The writing was good, the blurb caught my interest, but.... the story didn't flow for me. I couldn't lose myself in the story and fully connect with these characters. Not sure why.

Okay, check out Samantha's brilliant review - she said exactly what my fuddled, allergy-afflicted brain couldn't even come near to expressing: (Great job, Samantha!):

The Last Goodbye by Fiona Lucas. (2020).

Anna's world was shattered 3 years ago when her husband Spencer was killed in an accident. Everyone thinks it's time she moved on, but how? On New Year's Eve she calls Spencer's old phone just to hear his voicemail. But to her surprise, someone picks up. Brody answers and is the first person that understands what she's going through. As they begin to speak regularly, Anna finds herself opening up, smiling again, laughing again and even hoping. But Brody has a secret; will that threaten everything, just as Anna might find the courage to love again?

Part romance and part women's fiction/chick-lit, this contemporary novel makes for a compelling read. Within a few pages of starting the book, the reader can really feel Anna's ongoing heartbreak after losing her husband a few years prior. She still rings his phone just to hear his voice, when one day someone answers - Brody. Anna and Brody quickly form a bond, and end up inspiring each other to have hope and move on from their respective grieving states. This is a journey that I would compare to 'one step forward, two steps back'; both characters have many mental setbacks. Whilst it's an emotional narrative, it ultimately ends on any uplifting note. I would recommend to anyone who is intrigued by the synopsis.

I was a little apprehensive when I delved into this, after recently having lost my sister. I will admit, the descriptions of Anna's grief was so true, honest and poignant, I wouldn't be surprised to learn Lucas is grieving too. They were extremely painful to read, but also gave me strength that someone understood some of what I'm feeling. The guilt and regret are sometimes as strong as the pain of loss.
The characters were wonderful, and I was so moved by their stories that this will stay with me long after finishing. I honestly think I feel stronger mentally because of it.
A strong novel with a powerful message that I won't forget.
Thank you, Fiona Lucas.

“How can you move on if you can’t let go?”⁣

The Last Goodbye was a beautifully written story about Anna who’s grieving over the sudden loss of her husband Spencer. Anna calls Spencer’s phone to hear his voice on his voicemail as she grieves, until one night, someone answers. ⁣

Brody, a man also grieving the loss of someone he loves and suffering from anxiety and agoraphobia now has her husbands’ old phone number. He talks to Anna any time she calls. Over the course of a year these two grow closer. They support each other through their grief and help each other to see the light again. ⁣

This was a slow burn but it was heartbreaking and heartwarming. She beautifully depicted Brody’s character. You could just feel his fears and anxiety. Your heart broke for Anna and Brody both. It was wonderful watching their relationship blossom, even never meeting. ⁣

Abby’s best friend Gabby was also an amazing friend and co-heroine in this story. This was a really emotional, beautiful story.⁣

Thank you @harpercollins and @netgalley for an ARC for my honest review. ⁣

When I saw The Last Goodbye by Fiona Lucas being publicized as in the vein of P.S. I Love You and perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes I knew I had to read it. This was everything I was expecting it to be - emotional, romantic, painful, and hopeful all rolled into one. I listened to the audiobook which is narrated by Antonia Beamish and it made this story even more emotional than it was on its own! She was the perfect voice for Anna, and I loved her narration for not only her but Brody's parts as well. It broke my heart that Anna would call Spencer’s phone, but I love that she was able to make the connection with Brody through doing that. Even with his secret that she later learns, which is heartbreaking by the way, this still had an ending that I absolutely adored and the ride we take to get there is filled with grief and pain, but also some hope and laughter as well. I loved the way Lucas wrote this novel, and I found myself tearing up more than once.

Anna is such a well-thought-out character, and I could practically FEEL every single emotion she was going through. I really enjoyed quite a few characters in the novel although I was not a big fan of Spencer's mother. She was the cause of a lot of drama for Anna as the story goes on, but by the time we get to the end I could understand some of her feelings and it really just goes to show that everyone handles grief differently. If you have experienced a loss of some kind, The Last Goodbye will probably leave you in a puddle as it did with me. It was such a touching story in so many ways, and I loved that through the grief there could be love and joy again. I fell in love with Lucas' writing and you can tell that she probably has just a few books under her belt. I am so happy I found this author and recommend The Last Goodbye to fans of emotional women's fiction and romance.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

One thing is for sure, I don’t think I was fully emotionally prepared for the commitment this book requires. It is so sad! You definitely need to have a strong constitution to read this story so consider this your advance warning.

There are some seriously heavy topics explored in this novel but I think the writer handles them expertly and sensitively. From the death of a loved one to a family tragedy and isolation, there is a lot of sadness running throughout the pages. I felt quite glum reading this story yet, simultaneously optimistic that Brody and Anna will find a comfortable resolution.

Reading this book felt like sharing the uncomfortable, claustrophobic journey that Anna and Brody are both on. The sadness emanates from the pages and I felt my heart break frequently with the loss that both characters present. However, why would I want to put myself through this? Simple. Step by step, it is clear that Anna and Brody are making small changes. I smiled when Anna smiled; I laughed with her and Gabi… all in all, I felt invested in the characters and their journey.

Lucas has created a narrative that leaves readers grateful for what they have. After a turbulent twelve months that the world has experienced, I think this puts quite a few things into context. The grief that Anna and Brody present is palpable, but so is the hope and kindness that they offer one another. Because, at the heart of it, it’s non-judgemental listening that helps both characters move forwards. They both need each other for that support and I think that Lucas demonstrates the importance of this unconditional aspect of their connection.

I really enjoyed reading this story because it felt so well written. It was incredibly sad and was certainly not fast-paced. Reminding me of a Jojo Moyes story, (not just because it is a heart-breaker) I was emotionally connected to the characters very early on and was keen to see how this slow drama would unfold. Consequently, don’t be put off by the emotions in this story – just approach it when your head is in the right place.

With thanks to HQ Digital and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This contemporary romance novel poses the question, "How can you move on if you can't let go?" The main characters are endearing. It's easy to have empathy as they navigate the boundaries of friendship, love, extended family, dating, secrets and loss. Agonizing loss. There is in the end hope!

This was another emotional read about grief and loss but ultimately it was uplifting. It’s not your typical romance, it’s more about moving on and starting over after a devastating loss but I loved the exploration of this as seen by both main characters. The narrator was lovely, I’m a sucker for an audiobook narrated by someone with an accent, I find it so soothing

If you are looking for slow burn romance - this is for you.

Let me change what I just said above - this is hardly a romance, and more a contemporary fiction.
If you want to see my full thoughts, watch my reading vlog: https://youtu.be/A-W3bp-QoUo

Anna and Spencer were soulmates, but after Spencer dies, Anna has no clue how to move on with her life. Anna calls Spencer's old number many times in order to hear his voice on the voicemail, and all of a sudden, someone answers. Is this new man, someone she is destined to be with?

This book lasted way too long and was way too much like Forever Interrupted by TJR - down to the exact way Spencer died and the toxic Mother-in=Law.

I do think the book did a good job at depicting the grief you go through after losing a significant other, and the struggles with dating after losing a soulmate, I just wish that it had been a faster story. There was so much dialogue! I wish we had gotten to see Anna and Spencer's relationship before he died - because I felt like I didn't care as much with the their relationship because I didn't see them at their strongest point.

Unfortunately this didn't work for me, and I'm sad because I really wanted to like it.

I knew this book would make me cry and so I was somewhat nervous of how upset it would make me feel all the while knowing I wanted to read it and feel whatever sadness it threw at me.
This book is a slow burner with an adrenaline pumping near-to-the-end development. Not adrenaline inducing in terms of twists or reveals as this is not a mystery, crime or thriller book, but a beautiful and poignant love story that made me feel as if my heart had stopped whilst I was reading. Its quiet power and devastatingly accurate sense of loss and grief held me spellbound as I met and journeyed with Anna, bereft and heartbroken that her husband Spencer died and left her alone.
The 1990 pop song by Sinead O'Connor, Nothing Compares 2 U, came into my head as I was reading The Last Goodbye as Anna keeps a tally of years, months and days since Spencer has been gone in the same way the song talks about it being 7 hours and 15 days 'since you took your love away'. The song and the book share the same melancholy and the achingly torturous daily reminder of how life is so different without the person you love by your side.
Anna is an amazing character that I felt privileged to meet as she moved from hiding under the duvet to being dragged to salsa classes by friend Gabi, and standing up to her domineering and possessive mother-in-law Gayle.
Love and loss and how bereavement affects us in different ways is explored through Gayle's loss as a mother, Anna's loss as a wife and Gabi's loss of a relationship that just isn't going anywhere. It is raw and real, deeply sad but also life affirming as Anna begins to find courage and comes to terms with moving on.
She is helped enormously by the unseen Brody, caught in his own personal torment, and who just happens to have acquired a phone number that used to belong to Spencer. Anna, at her lowest ebb has rung the number before just to hear her dead husband's voice, but this time on New Year's Eve, it is a stranger's voice who answers, Brody.
I want to wax lyrical about every chapter of this book but can't spoil the story for would-be readers. There was just so much of Brody's fear that I could relate to and understand and this is why, in places, the tears kept falling.
An extremely thoughtful and compassionate novel, this book made me cry but also sows plenty of seeds of hope. If I could award it 10 stars I would because not only is this a love story it is also about the freedom we give ourselves if we can only face up to our fears and learn to let go.
Anna and Brody will stay in my heart as fictional role models for being brave, honest and prepared to face each day, no matter how hard that is.
And just in case you are worried about the book only being able to make you cry, it does make you smile too.
Thank you to Fiona Lucas, the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this inspiring and heartfelt story, in exchange for this, my honest review.
Read it!

A story of loss, grief, friendship and second chances at love and happiness.

Ana lost her husband, Spencer, and is having a hard time moving on, past her grief. One night she dials his old number, wanting to hear his voicemail, and someone answers the phone. So begins, little by little a friendship with Brody, the new owner of Spencer's old phone number.

Anna and Brody are both crippled by sorrow from the mourning of a lost loved one. Their conversations, give way to a friendship as they find understanding and solace in each other. I loved their friendship and how they each encouraged each other to take the steps necessary to heal with unconditional support and understanding.

Fiona Lucas wrote this story with sensitivity and compassion for grief and loss and that shines through. It's an emotional story and not one to go into expecting a typical, romcom style love story. This is more about the healing and the emotional connection the characters form with each other, than a typical second chance romance. If you go into it with that in mind, you won't be disappointed.

The audio was well done. I really enjoyed the narration and thought it flowed easily.

This was a really beautiful read about two people finding solace in one another after years of suffering in their own grief. After three years of misery the heroine Anna dials her deceased husbands phone just to hear his voicemail message. However a mishap with the bill has the company reassigning the number and someone (the MC Brody) answers the phone. From there the two spend the entirety of the book (months) getting to know one another and connecting over their shared pain. The book has little to no action aside from an out of control ex mother in law who really needs a kick in the ass IMO. While the heroine puts on a brave face and tries to continue her life, for nine years the hero has suffered in pain becoming borderline agoraphobic and anti people. Talking on the phone slowly brings them both out of their shell and it’s not until the very end that they even meet. This is really my only complaint about the book as once they meet it just sort of ended. There’s so much that I felt was hanging in the balance of uncertainty. I did love how the heroine was inspired by their meeting and connection. She came up with an idea for an app that would bring other grieving people together in a safe and controlled way. Sometimes talking to an absolute stranger is the best thing for you especially if they know exactly what you are going through in a way even those closest to you cannot. This was an intensely emotional read but also truly bittersweet in proving a HEA is possible more than once in your life if you only believe in the power of love & don’t let it slip away.

File this under books that made me sob. I was in tears within the first few chapters. Three years after the death of her husband, Anna decides to call his voicemail, craving the sound of his voice. When someone unexpectedly answers on the final ring, a journey of healing, friendship, and newfound love forms.

Beginning as phone calls guiding Anna through her grief, Brody has his own trauma that slowly unveils itself as the story progresses. Both trying to determine their place in life, I adored the safe space they found within each other. Showcasing two completely different lives, this was such a thorough look on grief and mental health. It delves not only into the personal impact grief has but also the (sometimes messy) affect on the remaining relationships around us.

Although the connection between Anna and Brody is formed entirely via phone, their chemistry shined brightly through. The ending had a beautiful, subtle, full-circle moment that I think any romance reader would love.

This was maybe a smidge too long, but nothing a bit of editing wouldn’t fix. This is a new author to me, and I dig her writing!!

This book is a long journey, but it needs to be, since it's a book about people who are grieving and stuck in place. And there aren't going to be quick remedies for that, but there will be a progression, one which is believably laid out by the author over the course of slightly more than a year.

The book opens with Anna, who lost her husband a couple of years previously and is still sheltering under the numbness. After one particularly low evening, Anna calls her late husband's old phone number. A number she's held on to just so she can call and hear his voice on the message. Except this time there's no reassuring voicemail recording. Someone actually picks up. Thus begins the slow development of a new friendship that offers Anna the listening ear and patient advice that she's been unknowingly yearning for.

Like me, you might not always be able to relate to exactly how these characters are acting. Like me, you might occasionally feel frustrated by the things they do or don't do. In a way, the reader becomes an extra member of the concerned friends brigade. Wanting to see the grieving person move forward a little sooner, but ultimately forced to recognize that grief takes unique pathways, and that the person will probably get to where they need to be in the end.

Although the subject matter was serious, I wouldn't say this was a hard or tragic book to read. It was poignant but not exhausting. The premise strained my credulity ever so slightly, not the strangers becoming friends over the phone idea, but that it would take Anna SO long to realize that she was the one who had been doing all the talking. It seemed like quite a one-sided friendship for a while. But what did sell me on the book was the concluding section. The emotional progress and the ultimate payoff were quite satisfying.

The writing was really good. Although it's a contemporary book, it felt fairly timeless because its focus was rightly on the character's internal worlds.

Thank you to William Morrow and Harper Audio for gifting me review copies of this book. Honest, I put off reading it for so long because I heard it was really sad and I didn't think I was in the right place to read something truly heartbreaking. But now I'm annoyed at myself that I did take so long to pick it up because it was really good.

It's definitely not a light romance, and maybe it's more women's fiction than true romance? Either way, it's full of grief and loss, mental health struggles and more. But it's also really, really beautiful (both the story and the writing). It will have you weeping through all of it.

Anna's husband dies suddenly, and she calls his phone number so she can hear his voice on the voicemail message...except, someone picks up. Brody has been assigned her husband's old phone number, and is also suffering the loss of someone he loves. The two talk, and over the course of a year they grow closer and support each other through their grief.

I alternated between reading a physical copy of this book and listening to the audio, which was narrated beautifully by Antonia Beamish. It comes in at 11 hours and 27 minutes. I think this was my first audiobook performed by this narrator, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for others.

How can you move on if you can’t let go? This sentence sums up this story nicely. Spencer was Anna's soulmate. They thought they would be together forever, but three years ago, Spencer was killed in a terrible accident. Some people think she should move on, Spencer's mother blames her for his death and thinks she should sacrifice any further happiness. On New Year's Eve, Anna calls Spencer's phone number to hear his voice, but is shocked when someone answers the phone. The bills she thought she had been paying were not paid and his number was given to someone else. That someone else is Brody Scott. Brody is dealing with his own issues, but we do not know exactly what has happened until much later in the book. They begin a phone relationship, and feelings begin to develop. Will they be able to move forward with their lives or be stuck where they are forever.

My husband passed away four years ago, so I understand grief, survivor's guilt and that feeling of loss and betrayal. All things that Anna felt. The difference is Anna is still young and has a lot of living to do. I enjoyed reading about Anna's and Brody's relationship and how they grew to care about each other. I was surprised when I learned about all that Brody was keeping secret from Anna. He had a lot to deal with and it is no wonder he is such a tough spot, even ten years later. The Last Goodbye was a very heartbreaking and emotional story. Most of the characters were likable and even though Spenser's mother was a "biotch" with a capital B, she comes around in the end and her and Anna almost have a moment. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Antonia Beamish. She is another narrator that I enjoy. Her voice, expression, tone and pacing were very well done and added much to this story. I recommend this book to those who like a romance, but one that is realistic, touching and shows emotional growth. The publisher generously provided me a copy of this book upon request. The rating and opinions shared are my own.

I absolutely fell in love with these characters. This is a well-paced story of coming to terms with loss. It shows, with brutal honesty, how a loved one's death not only impacts you but those around you. When Anna lost her husband, Spencer, her life was changed forever. Even though she is going through the motions of daily life, she isn't really moving forward. She's most definitely stuck. In trying to deal with her grief, she calls Spencer's cell number one night just to hear his voice and tell him things she wished she'd said the night he died. But instead of hearing his voicemail message on the other end, it's a different male voice that greets her. Anna eventually learns who the voice on the phone is (at least she learns his first name) and they form a strange friendship. He listens to her work through her grief and doesn't judge her. She believes he has also experienced the loss of a spouse and looks to him for wisdom on how to move on. The relationship that develops between them is special because it was formed with knowledge and understanding from shared conversations with a "stranger."

It's such a beautifully written book that demonstrates how people deal with grief and loss. In my opinion, it's quite a realistic depiction. This book shows how differently people handle it as well. There isn't any one thing that works for every person. I was very invested in seeing how the story wrapped up and needed a satisfying resolution. I wasn't disappointed in the least.

In addition, I listened to the audiobook. It was a wonderful way to absorb this story. The narration was perfect for the story. I believe it truly lent to the authenticity of this read for me.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC. I voluntarily chose to review it and the opinions contained within are my own.
