Immortal Guardians have hunted and slain psychotic vampires for thousands of years. Now someone is hunting them. Humanity remains oblivious to the existence of immortals, vampires, and gifted ones, so how does this rising nemesis even know who they are and where to find them? Could it be the machinations of an old nemesis—one they thought they defeated? Or is this something new? Because unlike the foes they’ve faced in the past, this one doesn’t just target immortals. He targets those who are near and dear to them.

A gifted one under the Immortal Guardians’ protection, Nicole has worked hard to land her dream job—that of an Immortal Guardian’s Second or mortal guard—and loves working with Sean. He’s smart. He’s funny. And despite the sometimes dark existence he leads, the two of them laugh a lot. Years spent as a special ops soldier prepared Nicole well, enabling her to keep Sean safe despite his tendency to dive headlong into danger. But can it keep her safe? The enemy they face is determined and shrewd. Uncovering his identity may require new methods of engagement and force her to take a few risks.

Sean hasn’t been immortal long, but he knows the rules. And according to the rules, Nicole is off-limits. She’s his Second. His guard. His best friend. The one person who knows him better than anyone else. Though he loves every minute he spends with her, friendship is all they can ever have... isn’t it? Sean soon begins to question that as the two of them engage in a deadly cat-and-mouse game with the enemy, one that will reveal the true depth of their feelings for each other and drive him to abandon the rules altogether.

Nicole, a gifted one, is Immortal Guardian Sean’s second. Both have been told romance between them is forbidden. The attraction between them is growing, making it awkward when others can read their thoughts..

I liked both Nicole and Sean. Seeing them work together and protect each other was almost as delightful as the banter between them. When the daughter of an Immortal and fellow gifted one finds herself in trouble, Nicole steps in to lend her aid. Something nefarious is going on, and it looks like someone is hunting Immortals. The entire team works together to protect their own.

Rogue Darkness was fantastic from shape-shifting to planes. It was almost impossible to put down and in fact I suffered after staying up until nearly three am to finish this. Was it worth it? Abso-frickin-loutley!

I first began reading the series, but as Duvall brought her books to audio, I switched and never looked back. Each book will work as standalone and feature a case and one couple. I began with book five and then went back. If you are able, I recommend starting from the beginning. I have read or listened to EVERYTHING this author has written. She is an auto-buy and someone I strongly recommend, especially for fans of paranormal romance, urban fantasy and romantic fantasy.

It was so nice catching up with other Immortals and their relationships. Duvall gave plenty of updates, tidbits, history and surprises that fans will be delighted.

Kirsten Potter narrates, and she does so brilliantly. Her male voices are wonderful and her females are strong, kick-ass and confident. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

Disappointing

I've always loved this series (and still look forward to the next book in the spin-off series as well). But I struggled with this book.

It felt as if the first half of the book was catching up new readers on background stories for every cast member, and we didn't get into the real plot for this book until the middle. Even then, some of the scenes dragged on.

I was bored a lot of the way through and fought the urge to skip ahead to the action.

Another complaint I had is rehashing the same old bad guy. I imagine it's very difficult in a long-running series to come up with new conflicts that challenge the heroes, so I'm not leaning on this one too hard. But... it's always the greedy rich guy. (Maybe that's the theme of the entire series and I'm missing the point?)

One positive is that Duvall nails the characters. Each one is unique and you feel like you know them. I'll continue to read the series for the characters alone.

** Possible Spoiler for the spin-off series **

I'm also curious why Ami's brother and the whole space mission were omitted from this book? Given the amount of backstory given for everyone else, it seems like that would have come up.

(I hate leaving a review like this, because I love this author. But I wasn't feeling it on this one.)

My Thoughts
We met Sean a long time ago and have seen him here and there plenty, but it's great to see more of him and his second. Their journey is sweet and so fun. We also get to see more of previous couples, like Cliff and Emma! I was afraid his new status would take him out of the picture for the most part, so I was really excited to see so included. In addition to Cliff's involvement, we take a fun walk down memory lane - without flashbacks! I love all the characters and this world so much.

*Audiobook note: All I can say is I adore Kirsten Potter, she's so great!

About the Characters
Nicole is a fearless and extremely capable woman. She backs Sean up without hesitation and is clear headed in critical situations. Sean is just fun. He's definitely just like the others when it comes to being over protective of those he loves. They tease and bond over food and it's all around a happy experience.

What I Liked
I was wondering why there was a dragon on the front cover, and it was awesome to see it come into play. I like meeting new people; the Immortal Guardians world is definitely growing.I look forward to what new excitement they'll bring.

What I Didn't Like
There is so much that has happened in so many previous books, and so much potential for new characters and a new conflict, that it's a little overwhelming at times. It's a lot to catch up on or keep up with, but that's unavoidable with a series this big - which isn't a complaint, just an observation.

More Thoughts
A few books ago, we met Nick and Kayla. We'd never met Nick before and we'd barely met his hunting partner, so it almost felt out of place. They show up in this book and I really appreciated the tie-in. Many of these books hint at or even include a little of another couple's relationship, but this one almost felt like it was a story of two couples entirely. It wasn't and there is so much more than what we've seen here, so I definitely hope that story is next (and David's soon maybe?). I saw the ending coming, but it was even better than I hoped and over the top in the best way.

Does it stand alone?
Dianne Duvall does a fantastic job of providing enough information for anyone who hasn't read the previous books, and it doesn't feel super repetitive. That being said, especially this far into a series, it would definitely be better read in order.

Bottom Line
Want familiar (to current fans) faces, fun banter, and exciting action (in more ways than one)? This is definitely one you'll enjoy. I can't wait for more.

I have read every book in this series and was so excited to read this one. I hate to say it, but I was disappointed. It was boring. Way too much explaining of back story and details for readers new to the series for one thing. I get that you want to help readers picking up this book who have not read the other books but this was too much. For those of us who follow the series, all of the back story and explanations are mundane. Sean and Nicole's story was predictable and boring. I found myself more interested in Tessa and and Jarrod. I both listened to this on Audible and read it on Kindle. I love Kristen Potter but I think she made Jarrod sound too old. I get that he's an ancient, but he sounded way too old compared to Tessa. The best part of this book was Tessa and her trying to deal with the trauma of watching her brother die. I loved the scene where she poured her grief into the ground and then collapsed from the weight of it. I reread that scene a few times I found it so powerful.

Rogue Darkness is a friends-to-lovers story full of thrills, laughter and new dangers.

For the youngest Immortal Guardian, Sean, couldn’t have gotten luckier having been assigned Nicole as his Second, his human assistant/protector. Not only is Nicole trained and experienced in weapons and fighting, but her sense of humor keeps Sean laughing even while spending his nights fighting vampires. In the months since Nicole has been assigned as his second, Nicole has become Sean’s best friend. And while she might lack his Immortal speed, she has saved his butt more than once since they started working as a team.

Sean, Nicole and newly turned Immortal, Tessa, are out hunting for vampires at the local campus when they come upon a group of vampires who have attacked a group of female students. Instead of fighting, one vampires takes his prize and makes a run for it. Tessa is in pursuit and is shocked to find that she know him as one of Gershom’s vampires. She thought Brice was killed with the others months ago. When Sean catches up to Tessa, Brice tosses the girl he is carrying and runs. More surprising than knowing the vampire is the fact that the woman he was carrying away was Becca Dorman, Immortal Nick Belanger’s adopted daughter, who has been attending college in North Carolina.

But when vampires make a grab for Becca again only a few nights later, the question is whether Becca is in the wrong-place, wrong-time or is she being personally targeted and why? Becca is no match for any vampire but since Becca and Nicole could pass as sisters, Nicole offers to step in as bait to see if the vampires will try a third time to make a grab for Becca. Nicole might have more training but she is still human and Sean isn’t very happy about Nicole putting herself in danger. When Seth, David and Chris Riordan decide that if Nicole (Becca) is grabbed again, she shouldn’t fight and she should allow her captures to take her to their base so that they can get some answers to who is behind this all, Sean has had enough. Sean is going to do whatever he has to to keep his best friend safe even if he has to go against Seth’s orders to do it.

THOUGHTS:
I LOVE this series! LOVE IT! Twelve stories in, with two short stories and two spinoffs and every story in these series is unique. The characters each have their own personalities and brings something different to the story telling. There is so much more to this series than just vampire hunting. It’s all about the characters and the relationships between this large (and growing) group of Immortals and their friends.

We first met Sean in Darkness Rises, and we have witnessed, Sean and Nicole’s immediate and still growing friendship. They are fun to be around and manage to keep even the most dangerous situations light-hearted. In Rogue Darkness, Sean and Nicole begin to realize that their thoughts about each other are turning less best friend and more romantic in nature. Both fear that acting on their own feelings, which may not be reciprocated, could cause them serious trouble with the Network as the Immortal/Second work relationship shouldn’t be including sexy, naked times. They pretend that everything is status quo between them but when Nicole’s life is at risk, Sean realizes he can’t risk losing the most important person in his life. It was very funny whenever Sean tried to protest Nicole going out alone to act as bait, because she’s his Second and he was worried about her, everyone’s response was “Yeah. Sure. Because she’s your second, right.” Everyone but Sean and Nicole being aware that there was more to their bond than merely boss and employee.

This is hands-down my favorite series. Because each individual story brings something new to the series, I consider this my desert island collection. I could read this series from start to finish over and over again and never get bored.

I love all the stories and all the characters and Rogue Darkness brings its own fun and laughter in the form of Sean and Nicole. They even manage to find their own unique way of escaping danger by way of…dragon?

Kirsten Potter does an amazing presentation and really brings these characters to life. My only issue is that I started this series by paperback and not all her voices for these well-established characters match what is in my head but I will forgive her for not checking with me first.

Rogue Darkness is a Must Read so grab your copy today!

Immortal Guardians #12
Rogue Darkness (Immortal Guardians, #12) by Dianne Duvall Rogue Darkness by Dianne Duvall is book #12 in her highly popular Immortal Guardians series. I was very intrigued by this book when I saw the cover reveal. It has a rather large Dragon in the background, so of course it made me wonder… Is that Seth? I am happy to say that my question was answered in the book.

As far as the 2 main characters, Nicole & Sean, I have to say that I saw this one coming a while ago, but I am very glad it finally came to pass. And though this is touted as a Stand Alone book in the Immortal Guardians Series, I don't really believe it is as it ties in so much with Broken Dawn (Immortal Guardians #10) that it feels more like a new story arc than 2 standalone books.

I was also very happy to get to know Tessa & Jared a bit more in this book and I hope to see a story for them coming up soon.

Excited for a new installment of the series and disappointed I didn’t connect well with the couple. It felt more like telling than showing. I’m not sure if we got glimpses of them in previous installments. It’s been too long in between. Thus, I felt we were told they had a connection but it wasn’t shown enough before they threw around the L word and proposals. Again, three years together we are told. But on the page it felt like days. It gave me that insta love vibe I hate. (I’m all for infatuation and insta connection or insta lust but not insta love). Thus I did a lot of eye rolling and took me away from the story.

SPOILER AHEAD
I also thought how Tessa got kidnapped was dumb. Why would she stop and talk to this guy? There was no reason for it. She owed him nothing. The only reason was so the author could write her getting kidnapped. I wasn’t fooled. It wasn’t a twist. It was glaringly obvious what was going to happen. Very annoying.

This author is still a one click for me and I’ll continue this series with bated breath. The narration was excellent as well.

So, this is the 12th book in the series? I think? They are all starting to blend at this point. Since I'm so far in, I feel an obligation to keep going even though my enjoyment seems to decline with each new installment.

This newest book felt rehashed. The romance was done before: an Immortal falls for his second. So, that wasn't new. The Nicole posing as Becca plot was unbelievable. Immortal shifters said they need weeks to months of time with Becca to believably fool the baddies that they are her, yet Nicole, who has a passing resemblance to the girl, is able to fool the baddies that she is indeed Becca, just by saying, "Hey guys, I'm Becca."

Overall, this book is standard Immortal Guardian fair that feels redundant, with a weak plot driving the narrative. It passed the time, but I wasn't riveted like earlier parts of the series.

A decent addition to the Immortal Guardians world. At this point, I know exactly what I’m getting from these books, but it is starting to get a little old… it’s the same storyline with details just slightly changed.

Most of the book felt like a brief recap of all the characters in this world, then we got some action, then we got a different storyline for the last couple chapters of this book. I thought that portion would have been saved for the next book, but instead it was awkwardly tacked onto the end.

I’m not sure I’ll read the next book, but I am anxiously waiting for David’s story!

This is one of my least favourite tropes so definitely don’t like the way the romance just kind of happened, so really only reading it to keep what’s happening to this series. Honestly I would not touch this book with a ten foot pole if it’s not for it being part of the series. Especially how it started, like the H needed to get laid so oh well the h will do.

Rogue Darkness de Dianne Duvall Serie Immortal Guardians libro 12

Argumento:

Book source ~ ARC. My review is voluntary and honest

For thousands of years the Immortal Guardians, under the leadership of Seth, have hunted and killed vampires preying on humanity. As technology advances and the human population explodes, this job becomes much more difficult, not only to keep humans safe, but to keep the knowledge of vampires, immortals, and gifted ones hidden. Because unscrupulous people will do anything to learn the secret of immortality and they aren’t worried about breaking a law or two or a dozen to obtain it.

Nicole is a Second assigned to Sean, a fairly new Immortal Guardian. They’ve been working well together for about three years and have weathered the takedown of the powerful enemy of the Immortal Guardians, Gershom. When the stepdaughter of Immortal Guardian Nick Beranger is nearly kidnapped by vampires, they need to figure out if this is connected to Gershom, a random attack, or something else entirely.

Holy shit. Dianne Duvall has done it again. I have to admit to being curious and a little wary of what this next book would be about. I mean, the big build up to Gershom and his eventual defeat was huge. So huge. What was going to take his place? Because the Immortal Guardians don’t have enough on their plates keeping the exploding vampire population at bay. Wait…exploding vampires. Now, that would be interesting! Thank goodness they don’t. Explode, that is. Anyway, the excitement and tension in any good suspense comes from having a Big Bad to fight. Thankfully, we get one. There’s mystery, humor, steaminess, and so much action! And that one scene?! Holy fuckballs! That is just sheer brilliance. I love it! I would have finished this in one sitting if I hadn’t kept getting interrupted. Rude!

I love every book in this series and this book is no exception. With all the elements I love in a book I consider it the best entertainment around. As I say with every book that comes out. I swear I’m a broken record. Book awesome! Buy it! Buy all the books! Do it now! Seriously though, you won’t regret it.

I absolutely LOVE this series, so I think that I am going to be biased whenever anything new comes out. So - it's safe to say that I loved this book as well. It wasn't my favorite (but even that is not a negative), and it somehow felt like it was over in a heartbeat, but I still LOVED being able to jump back in and see the gang in North Carolina. To me, that is one of my absolute favorite things about a long term series that I'm invested in - to get to see all of the characters that we have come to know and love and get updates in what is going on in their lives.

With the recent spinoff and the last couple of books pivoting to the group in space (which I ADORE as well, don't get me wrong) - with that new focus, we haven't seen the OG characters as much and I did not realize how much I missed everyone. I was thrilled getting to see Seth and David and even Chris :)

This story focused on Sean and Nicole and it was done brilliantly. There is also the teaser with Tessa and Jared so that is going to be interesting in the future. Hopefully though, David deserves his story so I'm hoping that might be coming as well. See....too many wonderful seeds have already been planted that still have to come to fruition.

Kristen Potter did an AMAZING job as usual and she has definitely become the voice of the series. This is one of those that only amplifies the story if listening on audio.

So...another winner. Can't wait for book 13 :)

What a good book! Duvall’s readers have all been needing a new Immortal Guardian book and this one didn’t disappoint in any way. Since she’s also been writing her Immortal Guardians in outer space series, also known as The Aldebarian Alliance series, us readers have nothing to complain about since they are just as good! I’m happy with a new book in either series.

This time it’s Sean(Krysta’s brother)turn to find love. It wasn’t hard as Nicole is his Second-otherwise known as the person he’s not allowed to even date. We all know they aren’t sticking to the rules this time. Of course, in addition to their romance a new foe is twisting things up and Nicole, although mortal, is smack in the middle of everything. Enough about the story. I mean it’s good so read it. Unless you haven’t read the others then you would be more than a little bit lost. I recommend them all.

I really enjoyed both main characters and all of our favorite characters from the other eleven books, plus novellas-many of which show up in this one. Duvall has written characters to enjoy and love and the ones in this book are no different. The book also has plenty of edge of your seat scary things happening as well. I highly recommend this to paranormal romance or urban fantasy adult readers.

We met Sean a few books back as his sister came into her own as an Immortal Guardian. Now he is a newby guardian and still learning the ropes. He has been gifted a talented second named Nicole. They truly have chemistry from the start but both have been warned about becoming intimate.

The story is a bit suspense but a whole lot of crossing that boundary of what ifs between these two friends. The intensity of the action pushes them to confess their feelings and the rest is history.

This book has a TON of action in it. The whole group is trying to solve this mystery. The ending is as expected a big blow out bash! We do get to see quite a few of the previous couples in this one. In fact, I would same some even have equal page count to our main characters. That's ok though. It moves the story forward.

It was a great relief to come back to this world again with this author. I have been tangled up in her Aldebarian series and forget how much I loved the Immortal Guardians.

Great read! Great addition to the series.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The fun part of this one was watching Sean and Nicole realize that they had fallen in love with each other despite never having dated or even thought that way of the other. It was one talk about self loving that seemed to push them over the edge look at the other and a spark happened in their head, one they couldn't acknowledge. It took most of the book before they would talk or even act on things, yet all those in their circle knew it was a done deal long ago.

The other action in the book worked with the longer story arc going on. It seems like they are never going to be past Gershwin and his actions. Heck the guy is out of commission at this point, yet he is still causing trouble. It took them a while to see where this new threat was coming from and during that time people kept getting in trouble and threatened. The best was Sean escaping in a stupid way, but being saving in a one that will never be lived down way.

At the end of this one, it seems like the threat is over, but who knows. In the mean time the group has lots to celebrate and look forward to!

Oh my gosh! It was fabulously written. I loved Sean when he came into the series and Nicole was amazing as well. We needed more female seconds to come out. I do not like the sexism between the immortal males against having a female second.

I really like Tessa as well now. She just needs to talk to someone more about things. I do believe we might have our next couple, JARED AND TESSA!!! I really want that book. Sex scenes were tasteful and respectful as well.

Great job Cliff and Emma having twins. I would have liked to see Nicole and Sean asking Roland first to see what his thoughts were and all that. I do hope that Melanie finds something to block the virus. Poor guys there.

I really like Jared and Tessa to get together. Please and thank you.

Maybe Seth and Leah can have a child as well. Maybe having Leah having triplets!!!! Or something!

I do hope we get someone[gifted one] that isn't a second, network employee. Someone like a caregiver at a daycare and something happens to her. Love to see someone about that.

The Immortal Guardians is a series from Dianne Duvall that I have consistently enjoyed (even though there are a few books I have missed). This is a series that works in sequential order, so please keep that in mind.

Sean and Nicole (new additions to the family) are entertaining main characters to get to know. Ms Duvall made it easy to become invested in them and root for them to figure out their growing relationship and the outside conflicts making life difficult.

As with all of Ms Duvall’s books, this is well written and engaging. I was pulled in and didn’t want to leave! My one caution would be for people who are brand new to the Immortal Guardians- I would not start here. As the series is sequential, there is a lot of back story. The author does an excellent job of weaving details in, but I think having at least some familiarity with the series would be helpful. For me, getting to revisit this would makes me want to go back and find the stories I have missed!

Dianne Duvall sure knows how to keep you engaged.

I Love her Immortal Guardians Series every single one. Sean and Nicole kept things lively and interesting and their banter was so much fun. I especially loved when they finally gave into their feelings and thought they were being discreet but everyone around them knew and I loved when Seth said he saw them falling in love. OMG the best ever. My other favorite was the plane scene and Seth comes to the rescue. OMG wait until you read that part you will freak out. It was EPIC. Also Yay for Cliff and Emma so so very happy for them. It would be so cool if Melanie could find a way where the female IG could get pregnant. Wouldn't that be the best. Plus if after going through all the data and combined with hers she could find a cure for the madness. So so many possibilities. And if you haven't already you really really need to get the Aldebarian Alliance Series no kidding. You'll love it.

Nicole - worked herself up to being an Immortal's Second... and is working hard to keep their relationship that of friends... while she does her darn-dest to keep him safe...she is a --- ; a potential immortal...

Sean - recently... a new immortal... he is fun, he is sexy, he is working hard to prove himself as a hunter of vampires... and he is falling for Nicole, but keeping a lid on it because he thinks that they'll reassign Nicole

and they are working with one of the 'redeemed' immortals (who fought with the last book's bad guy)... one of the rare female immortals... and they uncover the last book's bad guy's plan T - a secret government lab that is kidnapping 'vampires' and testing them... and when they take our redeemed immortal, the group goes in to rescue her, retrieve all data, and shut them down...\\

Ends up the immortals all expected Nicole and Sean to get together... and it's no surprise when they do... and their op is successful...

So happy the immortal guardians have returned! I had to go back and reread a portion of Death of Darkness to get back in my Duvall groove but soon I was there. I had almost forgotten who Sean was but quickly remembered. Then I was good to go.
The book was action packed with some romance. Tessa and Jared are I hope are the next books as well as the new immortals we will get to know as they are released from headquarters. Hopefully Dr. Melanie can get some results from the data they “got their hands on” and Stuart can return to sanity. These books offer so any options for the author to take. New locations, new characters, new situations, new variations on the vampire virus based on climate(?). OH?

I love this series.
Because, unlike the foes they’ve faced in the past, this one doesn’t just target immortals. He targets those who are near and dear to them.

I love how Dianne always includes all the other characters; it feels like family.
This one has Sean and Nicole together and finding each other and the person who is targeting them.

Great Stuff!

Rogue Darkness

I've enjoyed the Immortal Guardians series and keep waiting for other characters in this and related series, that I admit I wasn't as interested in this one from reading the intro. I of course was glad I enjoyed it to the point instead of going to sleep stayed up for hours reading it I had hoped to read about Jared got a taste of that I'm wanting to read about some of the other characters mentioned and thought these two could wait having read it im very glad I didn't have to wait.
If finding a series of characters you will enjoy all their stories then this and The Aldebarian should be on your reading list
