As required by U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations and Audible requirements, I am disclosing that I was given a free review copy of this audiobook at my request. I have listened to the audiobook, and I have voluntarily left an honest review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating nor my review.

Book One of the Aftermath Falls Series (Lights Out), introduced us to MC James, the world’s luckiest investor, the world’s shyest flirt, the world’s biggest braggart, and the world’s worst prepper! Somehow, he still came across as likable. Also likable were the two female MCs: Beth and Claire, two girls struggling to make ends meet as waitresses. What was excellent was the narration! Christopher Harbour did a fine job with male voices, and Mandy McCullough was fantastic with the female voices. She also threw in the occasional soft sound effects, like knocking on a door. The effects were subtle and enjoyable, not at all distracting like some of the Graphic Audio effects can be.

So, long story short: I decided to give Book Two (Going Dark) a chance, and requested a review copy. I’m glad I did. The narrators continue doing excellent jobs, and in Book Two the “flaws” of James as a prepper, and the girls’ thought processes of “gee, do I want to stay in a mansion with James and my BFF, or take a chance out in the world and get eaten by neurotoxin, bio-weapon affected cannibal crazies?” struck me as more of a parody of a post-apocalyptic story than actual flaws.

For his part, James is still the world’s worst prepper: he built a two-basement mansion high up on a mountain, but forgot to stock things like a first aid kit, antibiotics, batteries, radios, much food, much fuel, spare car parts, weapons and ammo etc. At one point though, James admits to himself that he wasn’t very good at prepping! I nearly spit up my beverage laughing at that unexpected bit of self-honesty!

The romance and sex varies throughout the book. Sometimes it’s like Middle School (do you like me?), sometimes it’s very flirtatious (Claire feels safest sleeping naked in bed with James and Beth, but it takes several nights before anyone considers even cuddling), and sometimes it’s enjoyably explicit. All-in-all, I liked the relationship dynamics and growth.

There are no mutated monster creatures in this series, but there are humans badly affected by the neurotoxins, bio-weapons, and James, Beth and Claire manage to fight off several during various trips to town for supplies. “Going Dark” ends with plans to rescue scientist Myra, who is injured, out of food, and surrounded by cannibal crazies with guns. They also plan to fortify the mansion against eventual raiders.

So, if you’re looking for a more lighthearted survivalist story with likable characters and really terrific narration, I think you’ll enjoy “Going Dark”. I hope the author continues the series!

Rated as what it is, it deserves its' 5. It's not "magic dick" harem, and a lot of emphasis is put on the survival aspects. I'm not sure the author's plans for this, but it has another couple of books at least left of viable story arc as far as I can tell. The books are short, so it's not a big time investment if the premise appeals.

Good, clean fun.

Wonderful tale and well thought out plot. MC is an average guy dealing with extraordinary circumstances as beat he can. The characters all have depth to them. No one character is just a fill-in for anything. Next one should be a lot of fun.

Quick read.

This series is enjoyable, more a novella than a full book, but they keep you wanting more of the story.
Excited to hear the story as it progresses, and to see how each of our characters fill their role.
