Sterling Mill #1

Call It Fate

Rate this book
Living her life by color-coded lists has gotten Emalee through the past six years. With the support of her small family, she’s raised her young son while bringing her ancestral bed-and-breakfast back to its original beauty and into modern times. She’s comfortable with her role until an unexpected—but familiar—grumpy, green-eyed guest walks into her inn during a late snowstorm. But the weather outside isn’t the storm she needs to be worried about; it’s confessing the secret she’s been keeping for six years. Temporarily working in a small town nestled in the Appalachian Mountains was hardly how Zach intended to demonstrate he was the best applicant for a coveted internship. But if it proved his loyalty to his boss, he would do it better than anyone, then hurry back home for bigger and better things. He could have never imagined what was waiting for him in Sterling Mill, a parrot for a mayor? Thieving raccoons? Ridiculous, sure, but none of those compared to finding his old girlfriend and the green-eyed secret she’d kept from him. Painful revelations. Renewed passion. If only there weren’t new circumstances destined to separate them again, they might Call It Fate .

M.E. Montgomery

28 books240 followers
M.E. Montgomery can’t remember a time she hasn’t had at least one book on the go to read. After years of falling headfirst into the lives and loves of other author’s characters, M.E. decided to write her own. She enjoys creating the kind of realistic storybook friends you wish you could actually meet, and sometimes she finds herself wondering what those characters are up to once she’s delivered their happily ever after.
She’s married to her best friend and has four children and two Boxer dogs. They live wherever the Navy sends her husband, usually the East coast of the U.S., but also once in Japan.
Whenever she’s not writing or substitute teaching, she often ponders the riddle of how the kitchen sink appears to automatically refill with dirty dishes as soon as her back is turned. On the occasions it stays empty, you can find her with a glass of wine or Scotch outside at their fireplace or curled up inside with a book, binge watching TV, or chatting with readers.

This is the first book that I am reading from M. E. Montgomery and I loved it. I also love small town romances and this one wasn't exception. The story was good and it was going quite quickly for me, the characters were great and you can definately feel the sparks and the connection between them.

Emalee and Zach are getting a second chance of love in this book. Each of them was confused at the beginning and they were trying to protect their hearts. None of them trust too easily, especially Emalee. She was really hesitant until the middle of the book, wondering should she trust Zach again. Through the story the reader sees all misunderstanding that happened in the past and thankfully everything is revealed.

The Epilogue was soo cute and dreamy. I loved it at 100%.

I will make sure to read more books from M.E. Montgomery in the future ❤️.

Call It Fate – The Journey.

You know what’s really nice? Reading a story riddled with cliché moments that do not come across as cliché because those moments should have and needed to happen. Not only that, but they weren’t overly dramatized, and they were dealt with as immediately as possible without anything dragging on into #twitchy territory. That’s refreshing and exactly how you get this reader to devour your story in 1.25 sitting lol! This story sucked me in from the beginning and I was invested! I was smiling and happy and my heart was full! I mean even the conflict(s) didn’t phase me because the story was sunshine & sparkle, and very uplifting.

I like this world that the author has created. I love the town of Sterling Mill and its inhabitants, both human and animal! I adore all the shenanigans and vibe of the town is very uplifting and heartwarming! I look forward to visiting often!

What an absolutely delightful read!

CALL IT FATE by @author_me_montgomery 📚

5/5 Stars ⭐️

Excellent character development, emotional depth, and suspense. I love the gradual reveal of Emalee and Zach’s backstory, so you’re just as confused as both of them are until their past misunderstandings are cleared up and secrets are revealed. The situation that threatens to separate them again is believable and leaves you in suspense as to whether or not they will end up together!

BLURB✨
She plans for everything—except her past.
Living by color-coded lists has kept Emalee Dawson steady for the past six years. Between raising her son and restoring her family’s historic bed-and-breakfast, she doesn’t have room for surprises. But when a grumpy, green-eyed guest checks in during a late snowstorm, the weather outside isn’t the only storm she needs to worry about. Because this man isn’t just any guest, he’s her first heartbreak. And the secret she’s kept for six years is about to be exposed.

His future is waiting—until a secret rewrites it.
Zach Caldwell has one shot to secure a prestigious veterinary internship, and a temporary assignment in the Blue Ridge Mountains is supposed to be nothing more than a stepping stone. Or so he thinks until he walks into the town’s charming B&B and comes face-to-face with the woman that took him years to move on from. Only now, she isn’t alone. And one look at her son’s green eyes tells him he’s missed more than just Emalee.

One storm. One secret. One more chance.
With emotions running high, Emalee and Zach must face hard truths and the undeniable connection that still lingers between them. If only there weren’t new circumstances destined to separate them again, they might Call It Fate.

This was the sweetest second chance romance I’ve read!! I think I might have fallen in love with Sterling Mill 🥰 Here I am hoping to go visit the Dogtrot B&B 🥹

Emalee is an absolute gem of a fmc, her love for her family and her son is akin to me and my personal life. She is resilient, hardworking and an incredible mother who puts everything and everyone above herself to a fault. But that’s just how mom’s are! Lol I loved reading and watching her fulfill her dreams 🫶🏻

Zack has just became my favorite vet ever! It was such an emotional rollercoaster watching him find out the big secret but him and Emalee deserve all the happiness!!

This was funny, romantic and everything in between, i loved it so much. Plus Mayor Sterling, Callie, Milo and Chase get an honorary mention iykyk 😉😂

Emalee Dawson runs her families bed and breakfast while taking her son, Iain. When a blast from the past named Zach shows up needing a room she is a little shocked to see him in town. After all she hid something from him. One misunderstanding kept them apart but when he finds out her secret can Zach Abbott ever forgive her or will they want to make up the six years that they missed together? A sweet, second chance romance set in a cozy small town. Told in first person and dual POV.

I've read a streak of “man finds out he has a child years later” books lately and have enjoyed most of them because the basis for the secret made sense. Maybe it was a one-night thing or it was a straight-up lie, but the reason for the estrangement tracked. While I enjoyed the characters and the setting of this book, the reason why this child and his father never met made zero sense—especially when you consider the ages of the people involved.

Emmalee Dawson has been holding everything together for her mother, young son, and her family’s B&B for the last seven years. Ever since she returned home to Sterling Mill, pregnant and terrified, she’s been leaning into caring for others to keep her head above water. Her carefully constructed life is upended when Zach Abbott, her ex and her child’s father, walks into her B&B for an extended stay in Sterling Mill, where he’ll be covering for the local veterinarian, who is on sick leave. Zach had no clue where Emmalee disappeared to seven years earlier. He looked for her, but it was like she vanished, leaving him brokenhearted. Emmalee is convinced she caught Zach cheating when she needed his support, so she left. But when she found out she was pregnant, she couldn’t find him.
Now, Zach’s world has been rocked by the revelation that he has a son; Emmalee is terrified of what could happen with custody; and on top of it all, their deep attraction remains—even after all these years.

Let’s start with what I did like about this book. I think M.E. Montgomery did a great job of establishing the place and the characters in the town of Sterling Mill. I liked the vibe of this Appalachian small town, loaded with history—especially at Emmalee’s family inn. They’ve been in this town for years, and her family has owned the building for well over a century. It gave a nice flavor to the small-town setting. I also enjoyed the character development. These two people were so young when everything between them blew up and, while they are still fundamentally the same, they have matured. I liked that they took the time to get to know who they had become before diving into a full relationship.

Okay, on to the issues I had with the premise. This novel was first published in 2022, which means the main characters were originally together around 2014–2015. I do not buy for one second that they couldn’t find each other after Emmalee left. Zach was the president of his fraternity; he would have had a massive social media presence. I was 22–23 during this time period and in grad school. Everything social at school was organized through Facebook. If Emmalee wanted to find him, it would have been as easy as typing his name into the search bar and sending him a message. And Zach could have found her just as easily. She has a weirdly spelled name and is a business owner. Her info would have been readily available online, beyond just social media. It just didn’t make any sense to me as someone who was in that age range at the same time. I just couldn’t get on board with the basis for the secret baby.

Overall, I’m giving this one three stars. I liked the writing and the characters a lot, but the foundation for the secret-baby trope just didn’t work.

Coming face to face with her past has Emalee realizing she needs to come clean. Will Zach forgive her for what she's about to tell him, something (someone) she doesn't want to reveal?

Zach has never gotten over his first love. Coming face to face with her for the first time in years has him reconsidering what he had thought was his dream. Finding out the last thing he had ever thought was now his reality has him flustered but thrilled at the same time. Is this a second chance for him and his first (only) love? Will his new life take the place of what he had thought was going to be his life?

Heartfelt and heartwarming with a wonderful cast - Call it Fate is such a great second chance love story. Emalee is a strong character, a strong person with a big heart. I felt so for her when the whole story came out, wanted to give her a big hug. Zach was a bit frustrating at times, but by the end I could see what Emalee saw in him. I am now really excited about this Sterling Mill world the author has created, and can't wait for the next story.

This book is a fantastic start to a new series. Small town? Check. Colorful animals and the off-kilter people who love them? Yup. Friendships galore? Uh huh. A second chance for Emalee and Zach? Hopefully.

I won’t lie. Emalee frustrated me a few times. I know that forgiveness is devine, but she bordered on martyr a few times. Luckily, she managed to back away from that line when she realized just how much blame and responsibility for the situation she was taking on, but oh, how I wanted to remind her that the fault wasn’t solely hers! Or really even 60% hers. Sure, she reacted to what she saw and experienced. Who wouldn’t? But she felt almost like she deserved the grief and weight of the world sometimes, and I was so glad to see her cousin (and eventually Zach) break her of that bad habit. Even with all of that, though, she wasn’t a doormat. She chose the high road many times and avoided conflict to keep the peace, which is such a mom thing to do that I could easily identify with her often. And when she knew she was pushed too far or treated too unfairly, she was unafraid of breaking her own heart to find some sanity and a way forward.

As for Zach, oh, he irked me a few times also. But even with all of his apparent laziness in finding the woman he loved, once the truth came out, ALL of the truth, I had to admire him. He didn’t truly act how it appeared at first. He didn’t prove himself to be a typical trust fund frat boy. And when he was pushed too far, wow. Look out for a man who finds that he lost so much at the hands of bitterness and snobbery…none of which was his own. And even through the ups and downs, he didn’t let others stomp all over Emalee. He knew deep down that she was his One and that he needed to make things work. And boy, did he.

I look forward to the rest of this series because if I can find a reason to love characters though the frustration and utterly human reactions they have to things thrown at them, I’m sure there’s a lot more to love about this town and its residents!

Call it Fate was a brilliantly written, small town, single parent, second chance romance, it ticked so many romance boxes!<

Call it Fate is all about that, Fate, a couple who due to misunderstandings and malice went their separate ways seven years ago, but if by magic or yes, fate, this couple are about to be reunited in the most unexpected way when Zach arrives in the some Tennessee mountain town of Sterling Mill and right to the doorstep of The Dogtrot B&B run by the only girl he ever loved Emalee, the moment the pair meet again the attraction is right back in play, but fate has quite a lot to answer for, as secrets will be revealed, some good and some that could make this couple's budding reunion explode.

M.E. Montgomery has produced a really beautiful romance story, it was lovely to have a ringside seat to watch it play out, this story had everything, from light-hearted moments that brought a smile to my face, to those sad moments for Emalee and what she went through and what she has since achieved, to Zach trying to finally understand where he wants to be. The chemistry between the two is pretty hot too, and we had a slow build-up and then fireworks, just to start over again.

Looking forward to the next one in this new series.

4.5 Stars for Call it Fate: A Sterling Mill Novel
M.E Montgomery is a fairly new author to and honestly, I have no idea why she hasn’t crossed my radar before now. After reading this heartwarming, entertaining story I will certainly be checking out previous works by this talented author. If you love small town/ second chance romances look no further than single mum Emalee Dawson and Zach Abbott’s journey.
When Zach is assigned to help out a local veterinarian in Sterling Mill he has no idea he would run in to the woman he let walk away all those years ago when they went their separate ways. Emalee is now running the local Inn and her son is her number one priority so has fate put this couple in the same place at the same time for a reason.
One click to now catch up with Zach, Emalee and the quirky residents of Stirling Mill, you won’t be disappointed. This book has something for everyone, it’s entertaining, it’s heartwarming, it’s fun, it’s witty and it has adorable characters. I can’t wait to read more from this very talented author.

Fate does play a huge role in this endearing and heartwarming 2nd chance romance. Emalee Dawson has made a secure and just starting to be a profitable place for herself and her young son in Sterling Mill with her family’s legacy, the Dogtrot (don’t you just love that name 😁) Inn. When Zach Abbot is unexpectedly temporarily assigned to help out a fellow veterinarian in the small, sleepy little town of Sterling Mill, the last thing he expected was to run into his long-lost but never forgotten first love. But his life and future are back in Charlotte where he has definite plans to return. Even if they can find a way to move on from their ill-fated past, how will they ever be able to bring their two different worlds together? This is what love stories are made of. 😍

CALL IT FATE is a lovely and engaging read that draws you easily into the lives of its characters and keeps you thoroughly involved throughout from beginning to end. There’s not an element of this tale that doesn’t touch your heart and make you feel as if you’re a part of their story. The emotions drawn out are so relatable that you may often find yourself saying, “That’s the way I would feel.” The pages are filled with just the right mixture of drama, angst, joy, and passion to keep you turning them from start to finish. I so enjoyed reading this book that I found it hard to put down. I am definitely looking forward to continuing my journey in Sterling Mill. 😉

An emotional second chance love story
At times uplifting, at times heartbreaking, this book will take you through a whole gamut of emotions. But this is what Ms. Montgomery is so good at. She has created in Sterling Mills a perfect small town environment with supportive family members, residents who are quirky and birds that make you roar with laughter (I'm serious, wait till you meet the Mayor!) but most of all she has crafted a beautiful second chance love story. Emalee struggled to make it all work and you will be charmed by Iain, the little boy she raised but will Zach's unexpected reappearance back in their lives blow up everything she's strived so hard for? Beautifully written, Emalee, Zach and Iain's story will have you staying up late to find out if they can overcome all their issues and build a life together. I devoured this book loving each and every minute spent reading it.

Fate Gives Second Chances
Book 1 of the “Sterling Mill” Series starts will some big surprises after reading the prequel. Emalee Dawson and Zach Abbott meet again by fate seven years after their steamy night together. Both are full of misunderstanding about what happen after that night. The sparks are still flying between them, but how can they make it work when they are both following different destines. This is a well written endearing romance with emotion that tore at my heart as the characters work through their relationship. Could not put this one down till the last page was turned. Looking forward to reading more books set in Sterling Mill.
I received an ARC of this book from the author in return for voluntarily writing an honest review.

Call it Fate was my first from the author, but what an awesome book this was! This was such a sweet and swoon worthy, slow burn that has the perfect balance of romance, drama and a cast of main and secondary characters that keep the plot very interesting and engaging.

This was brilliantly done, I loved seeing Emalee and Zach's deep emotions and a connection that grows naturally. Each hiding secrets from themselves, and discovering that being true to their hearts, being there for each other gets them that happy ending. I liked how it's so easy for them to become family despite the long separation.

I fell in love with Sterling Mills and all the cute animals in town, and only wanted to know more about all the little amazing things going on. I can't wait to read more from this series.

This book has all the small-town romance goodness—second chance, secret baby, single mom, and a vet doctor MMC.

It’s beautifully written, with the author tackling tough topics like parental manipulation and the weight of taking over a family business after tragedy. These themes were handled with so much care and nuance.

I especially loved how Zach showed up for Emalee after discovering their son. His love for her was unwavering, and the way fate brought them back together—after years of searching—was so heartwarming. Finding her in the very town he was posted to felt like destiny.

This was a solid 4-star read for me, and I definitely recommend it.

Thank you to the author and Hambright PR for this Book

Welcome to Sterling Mill!

This was a fun and heartwarming read full of cozy small town shenanigans and quirky characters. Emmalee runs her family’s B&B and takes care of her son Iain. Imagine her surprise when a man from her past happens to stay at the Inn…the same man she has been keeping a huge from?

Emmalee and Zach have this connection and chemistry right from the start. He really steps up when he finds out about Iain…yes they have a lot to discuss and work out and while it’s not exactly smooth sailing at first we definitely see them grow.

There’s also an unfortunate trip to the zoo that Zach chaperoned…that had me laughing out loud.

There are some emotional moments and tough topics for both of them too - I thought the author did a great job handling them.

Loved this book! First I read Call it Unexpected which roped me into Call it Fate.
The characters are relatable and likable (maybe even lovable).
The story was good ... had a couple twists and turns - I definitely had at least 1 "I didn't see that coming" moment.
I would have liked a wrap up of one part of the storyline - but that was selfish - I don't think it would have changed the story or outcome.
I have loved every book I have read by M.E. ... I hope she has more in this series ... especially with the "cliffhanger" this book leaves me with ....

This book was the epitome of “It’s always been you.” I knew just by looking at the tropes prior to reading that I was going to love this one. Second chance is one of my favorites especially when it’s done right & this was it! Zach & Emalee matured so much in their years apart. They still had plenty to overcome as a couple & the town of Sterling Mills was literally the best setting for the couple to reconcile. The added side characters with all their quirky pets were the perfect amount of humor for the storyline. I’m very excited to continue this series!

I signed up to read this because it sounded like it would be a sweet, easy read and that’s exactly what it was! When Zach walks back into Emalee’s life and gets the most shocking news he could imagine, it’s easy to see everything changing for him and what he wants in his life! It’s clear there was a lot of misunderstandings from their past but they talk to each other like adults and work it out which I definitely appreciated! The ending was very sweet and I loved the romance throughout the book!

Loved this book. Small town, fate and quirky residents I started this book in the morning and didn’t put it down until I finished later that night. Might have stayed up past bedtime but so with it. I actually laughed out loud at some of the crazy small town crazy 😜. Loved the drama with the past history with Zack and Emalee and the happy ending. The town parade that ended in laughter, as well as the zoo visit kept me reading to the end

Would recommend this book Thanks for sharing your talents

Zach and Emalee have a past. They knew each other years ago and then went their separate ways. Years later he is the visiting vet and she is the inn keeper. To say they were surprised to see each other is an understatement. When she gives him the news he was never expecting they have a lot to unravel. One story at a time these two have to unpack their past to have any sort of future. This was a sweet quick read with a funny small town feel. Of course we have all the quirkiness of a small town-the gossip, town mascots and meddling friends. I was extremely entertained by this cute read and look forward to reading more books by this author.

Oh how I have missed this author’s words. They just bleed onto the pages and find yourself wrapped up in the world that they have created for us and it feels so raw and real. With Call It Fate, you have two people who have a history that resulted in so much more. Lots of misunderstandings and raw emotions that they both go through is heartbreaking but beautiful to see how things all play out between Emalee and Zach. There are a lot of intense moments between these two with all the chemistry from start to finish. Even as secrets are exposed, it was just stunning to read. Once I started I could not put it down! I am so looking forward to more within this world!

Call It Fate... What a great suited title for this book. This was a great 2nd chance romance that leaves you feeling too good. I physically couldn't put the book down.

Emalee Dawson is probably one of the best well rounded characters I have meet. She is a boss lady yet super kind. She strives for her achievements which are well deserved. She kills the game at being a boss and running a whole bed and breakfast while being a single mom. Zach Abbot is a new veterinarian who is adventuring to this small town all because he was temporarily assigned to help out. Sterling Mills is everything but what you would expect. Just listen to what happened to Zach. The place he has to stay while being in this small town is the exact place where his lost love of his life owns. Not only is he confronted with the forgotten misunderstood past, but this new future he wasn't prepared for.

This book was an engaging book that leaves you on the edge of your seat. You will feel like you are apart and live in this small town. This was a journey worth taking. If you love 2nd chance romance and small town romances then this is your next read. Can't wait to see what happens next in this small town.

It gave me anxiety by how much the characters were anxious about things they didn’t have control over like the heroine asking over and over again what would happen when her love interest had to go back home. I mean, it’s natural to ask yourself that but I had to read this so many times that I wanted to slap her face.

Also, a lot of side characters that I couldn’t care less, so many dumb misunderstandings and cliches, and the couple is very immature and childish so… I guess this is the first and final book from this author I will be reading.

The secret baby trope is one of my favorite tropes so books like Call it Fate was an instant download for me. Add in small town, second chance and found family in there and I'm sold.

This is a story of Emalee and Zach. They've met in college and had a brief relationship. Due to a family emergency, Emalee had to go back to her small town. When she found out she was pregnant, she tried to tell Zach but because of a misunderstanding and Zach's dad, she moved and kept it from Zach instead. Years later, they meet when now a vet Zach takes on the same town clinic where Emalee and their son Iain lives. The past gets caught up in the future and we see how Emalee and Zach navigated this whole secret, their lingering feelings for each other and all their mistakes back then.

I really love the premise of this book - the small town feel, both MCs pursuing their dream and being successful, and them reuniting with Zach finding out about Iain. I also appreciated the focus on vets and their needs. My favorite characters are Iain (so cute) and Reid (so interested to see him in the next books).

I like some side characters (I'm assuming they would be on the next books in this series) but didnt particularly cared for the other small town characters which is weird because those are usually some of my favorites when reading small town romances. I found myself skipping chapters about the derby or when the other small tosn characters were mentioned. I just didnt care enough for them to read through the shenanigans. I hated the conflicts and miscommunication here. The lack of trust between the two MCs makes me think they wont last very long. It didnt make me want to root for them. I normally don't mind a slow burn but this became a bit boring and I found myself struggling to finish. I did though and Im happy to see their happy ending. I will definitely read through the rest of the series but I'm in no rush to pick it up.

Thank you Hambright PR for the copy of this book!

Charming, Secret Baby Story with Excellent Small Town Vibes!

I absolutely flew through Call it Fate! M.E. Montgomery has created a truly endearing and charming first installment for the Sterling Mill Series. If you love a small-town setting, a second chance romance, and the inevitable fireworks of a secret baby reveal, you're going to want to pick this one up.

The chemistry between Emalee (our checklist loving B&B owner and sunshine heroine) and Zach (the grumpy, green eyed city guy) was instantly palpable. Their history is complicated, and the way they were thrown back together in Emalee's cozy inn during a snowstorm was classic romance gold. I loved watching Zach interact with the quirky, supportive folks of Sterling Mill the town itself, with its eccentric mayor (a parrot!) and thieving raccoons, felt like a character in its own right. It really nailed that 'found family' atmosphere.

The heart of the story lies in their complicated secret and their journey to understanding what truly separated them six years ago. Zach's reaction to the truth was handled sensitively, and his development as a hero was fantastic.

My only hesitation, and the reason it sits at 4 stars instead of 5, was the secret keeping aspect itself. There were a few points where the heroine's stalling felt slightly prolonged and dragged out, making the inevitable confrontation feel a little more frustrating than necessary. However, the emotional payoff and the strong connection that followed more than made up for it.

Bottom line: This is an easy, warm, and highly enjoyable contemporary romance that leaves you feeling happy and ready for the next book in the series! Highly recommend for fans of the trope.
