i actually can’t believe that it’s over. this was such an amazing season, especially the final two episodes, and i just feel a bit bereft now. i’ve read all four scripts and almost finished watching all four seasons and frankly i’m not sure what to do with myself. this was brilliant. please please please watch succession!! it’s so amazing and now it’s over and i don’t really know what to do!!!
I started catching on to a pattern by this season - you could call it plot reaction formation, the story equivalent of 'the lady doth protest too much' wherein whatever is established incontrovertibly at the outset of an episode is likely to be subverted by the close. Everyone thinks Kendall is gonna bomb the living plus presentation? He'll knock it out of the park. Characters say Roman is gonna rock Logan's eulogy? He'll crumple at the altar. Etc. Etc. Etc.
Reading through all these scripts makes me realize how much I hyperfocused on Kendall when watching the show - right up until the very end, it was a genuine toss up as to which sibling would ascend, but the small power dynamic shifts didn't register as much for me when I would watch. I was like, no, it's Kendall. Nuh uh, nope. Reading these scripts beat-by-beat renders his character flaws blisteringly clear. The dude is a manic dumpster fire. He put in the hours and has solid acumen but the dizzying elixir of power does him in every time. He's a grinning boy taking a spin at the adult's table. All of the kids are too self-sabotaging to helm Waystar Royco.
I love this show. The writers did a stupendous job keeping all of the characters involved in the story in active, surprising, and truthful ways. What an achievement...
Jesse Armstrong is a once in a lifetime writer. Magnifying reading the script and how he brought those intense scenes to light. So many bits in this script that were cut that i enjoyed reading and seeing different perspectives on. And the many notes that brought the feelings of each character together…. With Open Eyes and Church and State was surreal to read, especially envisioning their performances from the series. Forever grateful for this series. In reality, they’re all children living in adult bodies that are haunted by their past. A story that will be remembered for ages
i devoured the first three script books as soon as i could get my hands on them, but i took my time with this last one, because i desperately didn’t want this to be over. my god, what a creation succession has been. some of my favorite writing ever, just pure genius. need to make myself a kendall roy shrine now that its over
My feelings regarding the final season did not change when I read this book. All episodes are excellent. It was truly a satisfying conclusion to a great TV series that is definitely one of the best of all time. I love that I got to revisit it again and witness its greatness in a different fashion. Once again, bravo to all the writers for crafting a perfect final season.
Took my sweet time finishing this one because honestly I wanted to savour it after kind of speeding my way through the first three seasons' worth of scripts. Finished re-watching today and it felt very right to sit in that finale. Like the others, it was phenomenal and enhanced the already fantastic experience of watching the show. Seeing the cuts, the internal monologues, the ambiguities, the amendments, the riffing of actors... it's all so fucking good, Succession I will love you forever and I don't know what to do with myself
There is one line straight out of Lear that features in this season. It’s on in the background, on the tv as they divvy up Logan’s things. Not even sure if it made it into the edit. Still. Delivered by Willa, as a party trick. ‘Thou whoreson zed, thou unnecessary letter!’ Not a particularly meaty quote, just one of the many insults Kent throws Oswald’s way before he himself gets put in the stocks. There’s something immensely satisfying to me that the words do get said at Logan though.
