There are many intellectual biographies of Dr B.R. Ambedkar, but until now none has sought to reveal the personality of the man. They will tell you what he thought or what he wrote, but remain silent about who he actually was, his inner struggles, how he felt. They give information about Ambedkar, but do not talk about his interior life, his personal growth or how he came to be the man who left such an indelible mark on modern India’s constitutional, political, social and religious landscapes.

The first of an ambitious two-volume biography, Becoming Babasaheb traces Ambedkar’s life journey, from his birth in 1891 to the transformative Mahad Satyagraha in 1929. It takes a completely fresh look at Ambedkar’s lived experiences and teases out the nature and character of the man behind the legend. It offers an extensive, personality-driven narrative covering Ambedkar’s life, along with salient aspects of his contemporary legacy, unfolding as a tale of remarkable tenacity, which it chronicles in all its rich vitality.

All of Ambedkar’s books and speeches are publicly available, so large volumes will forever appear interpreting his writings and presenting his ideas. Meanwhile, old myths and inaccurate ‘facts’ about his thought and life events, even his relationships, persist.

Becoming Babasaheb has been written on the basis of entirely original archival research to set the historical record straight. A vivid portrait of the man in his times, both volumes of this biography will present readers with a new Ambedkar, the true Ambedkar.

It is really one fun and well-researched book. I am not sure why it took me so long to read. Its a shame that it ended after the Mahad Satyagraha. Now I have to wait for part two to come out. Babasaheb also became a bit of an inspiration at my times of doubt. If Ambedkar could do a PhD at Columbia, while doing a Masters at LSE and pursuing the bar at the same time, I can do a PhD next to my full-time job too. Yeaaaah.

It is one of the best books on Babasaheb – an easy read that provides a wealth of details. Ambedkar Sahab’s educational achievements are mind-blowing, with an infinite number of courses completed.

As a biography it is really a great work on Ambedkar, it opens a lot of new things in Babashaheb's life.
It also clarifies false information on Ambedkar, like meeting with Russel, Connection with sarvarkar and Hindu mahasaba people as given by Dhanajay Keer and other biographers in Marathi and English.

Gail Omvedt, Christophe Jaffrelot, Dhananjay keer, Khairmoday ஆகியோர் அம்பேத்கர் குறித்து எழுதியுள்ள கருத்துக்களை மீளாய்வு செய்து அதிலுள்ள பிழைகளைத் திருத்தி புதிய கருத்துக்களையும் தகவல்களையும் கூற இந்நூல் முயல்கிறது. அதனாலேயே இது முக்கியமான நூலாகவும் படுகிறது. “Ambedkar’s Preamble” என்ற நூல் இவரது ஆய்வு மீது பெரும் நம்பிக்கையை ஏற்படுத்தி இருந்தது,, அந்த நம்பிக்கையின் அடிப்படையிலேயே இந்நூலை முதலில் படிக்கத் தொடங்கினேன்.





அறிமுக உரையிலேயே அம்பேத்கர் குறித்து அவர் சமகாலத்தில் எழுதப்பட்ட வாழ்க்கை வரலாறுகள் அவர் குறித்து நிறையப் பிழையான தகவல்களைக் கொண்டிருப்பதாகக் கூறி அதிர்ச்சியூட்டுகிறார் ரத்தோர். வரிசைப்படி நிகழ்வுகளை அம்பேத்கரே யூகத்தின் அடிப்படையில்தான் வரிசைப் படுத்தி நினைவில் நிறுத்தினார் என்ற செய்தியும் முன்னுரையில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. Dhananjay keer அம்பேத்கருக்கும் சவர்க்கருக்கும் இடையிலான உறவு நெருக்கமாக இருந்தது, என்பதை ஒரு செயற்கைத் தன்மை கொண்ட புனைவாகவே கட்டமைக்க முயன்றதாக ரத்தோர் குறிப்பிடுகிறார். Jaffrelot குறிப்பிடும் அம்பேத்கரின் சிந்தனை போக்கு Sanskritization to Modernization என்ற வகையில் தான் இருந்தது என்பதை மறுத்து பௌத்தத்தை முன்வைக்கும் ரத்தோர் அதே நேரத்தில் Jaffrelot கொண்டிருந்த ஐரோப்பிய மைய பார்வையை(Eurocentrism) இத்தகைய தவறான புரிதலுக்குக் காரணமாகக் கூறுகிறார்.

அம்பேத்கர் பிறப்பிலிருந்து மகத் சத்தியாகிரகம் வரையிலான நிகழ்வுகளின் தொகுப்பாக இந்நூல் வெளியாகியுள்ளது, வட்ட மேசை மாநாடுகள் பற்றிய ஒரு துணுக்கு செய்தியோடு பாகுபலி முதல் பாக கிளைமாக்ஸ் போல் இந்நூல் நிறைவடைகிறது. அம்பேத்கர் குறித்து இந்த தலைமுறை வாசகருக்கு ஏற்ற ஒரு வாழ்க்கை வரலாற்று நூலாக இந்நூல் வெளியாகி உள்ளது. சசி தரூர் எழுதியுள்ள நூலுக்கு இந்நூல் எவ்வளவோ தேவலாம்.

அம்பேத்கரின் பெயர், பிறந்த தேதி, பள்ளிப் படிப்பு, கல்லூரி படிப்பு, பரோடா மன்னர் உடனான உறவும், பரோடா அரசு அவருக்கு வழங்கிய உதவித் தொகைக்குப் பின்னால் இருந்த நோக்கம், அமெரிக்கப் பயணம், திருமணம், படிப்பு, முனைவர் பட்ட ஆய்வு, பின்னர் ஐரோப்பியப் பயணம், அங்கு அவர் மேற்கொள்ளவிருந்த முனைவர் பட்ட ஆய்வு, இடையிலே லண்டன் வாழ்க்கையை நிறுத்திவிட்டு பரோடா வருகை, பரோடாவில் அவர் சந்தித்த இன்னல்கள், southborough committeeக்கு அவரளித அறிக்கை, அம்பேத்கரின் இதழியல், பாரிஸ்டர் பணி , ஆசிரியர் பணி, மக்களை அமைப்பாகும் பணி, முனைவர் அம்பேத்கராக இருந்து பாபாசாகிப் அம்பேத்கராக பரிணமிக்கும் இடம், மகத் சத்தியாகிரகம் என அண்ணல் அம்பேத்கரின் ஆரம்பக்கால வாழ்க்கையில் முக்கியமான இடங்களைத் தொட்டுச் செல்கிறது இவ்வாழ்க்கை வரலாறு நூல்.

நூலின் பின்னிணைப்பாக, மகத் சத்தியாகிரகம் குறித்து நிறைவேற்றிய தீர்மானமும், Bahishkrut Bharat பத்திரிகையில் வெளியான முதல் தலையங்கமும், மகத் சத்தியாகிரகம் குறித்து பாம்பே நீதிமன்றம் வெளியிட்ட தீர்ப்பும், Khairmoday வெளியிட்ட 12 தொகுதி அம்பேத்கர் வாழ்க்கை வரலாற்று நூல் தொகுப்பின் பொருளடக்கம் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது. ஏற்கனவே இணையத்தில் காணக் கிடைக்கும் புகைப்படங்களும் சவர்க்கருக்கு அம்பேத்கர் எழுதிய ஒரு கடிதமும், அம்பேத்கரின் பாஸ்போர்ட்டும், அம்பேத்கர் தங்கி இருந்த வீட்டின் புகைப்படமும் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளது.

இந்நூல் ஆசிரியர் முன்னுரையிலேயே, இது அம்பேத்கரின் Political/ Intellectual வாழ்க்கை வரலாறு இல்லை என்றும் மற்ற அம்பேத்கரின் வாழ்க்கையை வரலாற்று நூல்களை விட வரலாற்றுத் துல்லியத்தை வழங்க இந்நூல் முயன்றுள்ளது எனவும் குறிப்பிடுகிறார் அதற்கான நியாயத்தையும் நூலைப் படிக்கையில் உணர முடிகிறது.


அம்பேத்கரின் தாயாரான Bhimabai Murbadkar, தனது பெயரின் ஒரு பகுதியை Bhiva/ Bhima தான் அம்பேத்கருக்கு வைத்தார், மேலும் அதர பழைய பொய்யான அம்பேத்கர் என்ற பெயர் அவர் அம்பவேட்கர் என்ற பள்ளி ஆசிரியரைச் சந்திக்கும் முன்பிருந்தே பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டு வந்துள்ளது. குடும்பத்தாரின் இராணுவ பின்புலத்தால் கல்விக்கு முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கப்பட்டிருந்தது, ஆங்கில கல்வியை அவர் Elphinstone பள்ளியிலேயே முடித்தார், பல சாதிய ஒடுக்குமுறைகள் சந்தித்தார், பம்பாய் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் இளங்கலை பட்டம் பெற்று பரோடா சென்ற அம்பேத்கருக்கு மேற்படிப்புக்கான உதவித்தொகை நிபந்தனையின் அடிப்படையில் வழங்கப்பட்டது. பொருளாதாரமும், நிதி குறித்தும், சமூகவியலும் அவர் விருப்பத்தின் அடிப்படையில் படித்தார் என்பதை விட பரோடா சமஸ்தானத்தின் ஆட்சி நிர்வாக பணியை மேம்படுத்தவே அந்த படிப்புகள் அம்பேத்கருக்கு முதல் பரிந்துரைக்கப் பட்டன, பின்னர் அம்பேத்கரும் பொருளாதாரம்/ நிதி சார்ந்த படிப்புகளையே விரும்பி தேர்ந்தெடுத்த காரணத்தால் பரோடா அரசு பணியில் 10 ஆண்டு ஒப்பந்தம் ஒன்று போடப்பட்டதன் அடிப்படையில் கொலம்பியா செ���்றார் அம்பேத்கர். திரும்பி வருகையில் அவர் ஒரு நிதி அமைச்சராவதற்கான நிபுணத்துவத்தைக் கொண்டிருப்பர் என்ற நம்பிக்கையை பரோடா மன்னர் ஏற்���டுத்திக்கொண்டிருந்தார்.


கொலம்பியா பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் John Dewey, James Shotwell, Edwin Seligman, James Harvey ஆகிய பேராசிரியர்கள் அம்பேத்கருக்கு வழிகாட்டிகளாக அல்லது அவர் சிந்தனை போக்கில் தாக்கம் செலுத்துபவர்களாக இருந்துள்ளனர் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. கொலம்பியாவில் நண்பர்களாக அம்பேத்கருக்கு இருந்தவர்கள் இவர்களும் புத்தகங்களும் தான். அங்கிருந்தே அவர் புத்தகங்களைச் சேகரிக்கத் தொடங்கி இருக்கிறார், அதற்கே பாதி தொகை செலவாகி இருக்கிறது. இப்படிப் பல சுவாரசியமான நிகழ்வுகளை இந்நூல் கொண்டிருக்கிறது.

அம்பேத்கரின் வாழ்க்கை மேடு பள்ளங்களால் நிரம்பிய ஒன்றாகவே தெரிகிறது, அதனாலேயே அவரது முடிவுகளிலும் இது பிரதிபலிக்கிறது, யதார்த்த வாழ்க்கைக்கு ஏற்ற முடிவுகளை அவர் எடுத்தார், பௌத்த ஏற்பும் அப்படியானதே. சாதிய வன்முறைகள் அவர்மீது ஏற்படுத்திய தாக்கம் அவரது சிந்தனை போக்கிலும் பெரும் பாதிப்பினை ஏற்படுத்தி இருந்தது.


இதழியல் துறை குறித்த பகுதிகளும் சுவாரசியமானவை, Mooknayak, Bahishkrut Bharat, samatha, janata என அம்பேத்கரின் இதழியல் பணி நேரடியாகவும் மறைமுகமாகவும் தொடர்ந்தே இருக்கிறது. மராத்தியில் அம்பேத்கர் நிபுணத்துவம் பெற்றதும் இதழியலுக்காகத் தான். பெரியார் குடியரசைத் தொடங்கியதற்கு அம்பேத்கர் மூக்னாயக் இதழ் தொடங்கியதற்கும் காரணம் ஒன்றாகத் தான் இருந்தது.







மக்களை அமைப்பாக்க அம்பேத்கர் எடுத்த முயற்சிகள் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கவை, சமகால தலைவர்களுடன் இணைந்து அவர் தலித்துகளின் வாழ்க்கையை மேம்படுத்த எடுத்த முயற்சிகள் அனைத்தும் அமைப்பின் அடிப்படையிலேயே எடுக்கப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. முனைவார், ஆய்வாளர், பாரிஸ்ட்டராக இருந்த அம்பேத்கர் அமைப்பாக்க நடவடிக்கைகள் மூலமே பாபாசாகிப் என்ற நிலையை அடைகிறார்.


மகத் சத்தியாகிரகம், நீருக்கான போராட்டம், புனிதம் x தீட்டு என்ற சாதிய தீண்டாமையின் வேர்களைக் கண்டுகொண்டு அதற்கு எதிராக அம்பேத்கர் கொண்டிருந்த தத்துவார்த்த காரணத்தையும் நாம் புரிந்து கொள்ளலாம். Samata Sainik Dal என்ற பெயரில் அமைக்கப்பட்ட சமூக சமத்துவ படை, அம்பேத்கர் சத்தியாகிரகத்தைக் கடந்த போராட்ட திட்டங்களைக் கொண்டிருந்தார் என்பதை வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது.பின்னாட்களில் இதுவே Independent Labour Party உருவாக்க முக்கிய காரணமாக இருந்துள்ளது.


மகத் சத்தியாகிரகம் முடியாமல் முடிய, சைமன் கமிஷன் ஆதரவு, பம்பாய் மாகாண சட்டசபை (BLC) பங்கேற்பு, அடுத்து வரவிருக்கும் வட்ட மேசை மாநாடுகள் என அடுத்த பாகம் குறித்த விறுவிறு நடையில் இந்நூல் நிறைவை எட்டுகிறது.



இந்நூலின் மிகச் சில சுவாரசியமான பகுதிகளையே இந்த அறிமுகக் கட்டுரை தொட்டிருக்கிறது, அம்பேத்கர் வாழ்க்கை வரலாற்றுப் புத்தகங்களும் முக்கியமான வரவாக இந்நூல் நிச்சயம் இருக்கும். தமிழுக்கு விரைந்து வந்தால் மகிழ்வேன்.

In my view, Dr B.R. Ambedkar, one of the makers of today’s Bharat, has never got such a good and well-researched biography like this one. This biography is full of new information about the life and thoughts of Babasaheb. This author has corrected many inaccuracies found in Babasaheb’s earlier biographies (by Dhananjay Keer, Christopher Jaffrelot, Anand Teltumbde and many more). Most of the informations are drawn from the primary sources.
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar needs no introduction, so I will discuss many unknown facts disclosed by Rathore about Ambedkar one by one.
When a person of a great stature like Sir Pheroze Shah Mehta died, the Bombay municipality decided to erect a statue of him. But, Babasaheb opined that a public library would be a better tribute to Mehta than a statue. This point is important to know for both LW and RW leaders erecting Ambedkar statue here and there nowadays.
Babasaheb also supported co-education of boys and girls and I fully support this position. This position of Ambedkar is totally opposite from Manu, who wanted education for both boys and girls, but not co-education.
Author excellently described Ambedkar’s nationalist views, which would dishearten many people, who hates nationalism, but idealizes Babasaheb. Author also mainstreamed an unknown fact of Ambedkar’s romantic relationship with a British widow, named Frances in London.
According to me, the commercialization of education is a great disaster in current days, that does not gather much public attentions. I was very glad to learn that Ambedkar has expressed warnings against this in his times.
Today’s Ambedkarism has become just about hating the upper-caste Hindus, especially the Brahmins. But Ambedkar’s thoughts were quite opposite from this. He told Jedhe and Javalkar that blaming the Brahmins for everything would not led to any solution, as the Brahmins have already started widow-remarriage among them. When the Satyasodhak Samaj declared that they would join the Mahad Satyagraha only on a term that the movement will discriminatively exclude Brahmins from joining it, Ambedkar refused.
Ambedkar is far beyond from being just a Dalit icon, he is a national icon and a warrior of equality and human rights (some will call him a civilizational warrior). Unlike many other biographies, this book is not written on fully colonial mindset, but it promotes decolonial values in many parts.
So, according to me, this one is the best among Ambedkar biographies till now. If you want to know Ambedkar accurately, you must read this book. It’s very fast read, engaging and unputdownable. I am eagerly waiting for it’s second volume.

"Becoming Babasaheb" by Aakash Singh Rathore

"Becoming Babasaheb" is an ambitious biography of Dr. B.R.Ambedkar that presents the life and times of Ambedkar in the chronological order of events from his birth in 1891 until the Mahad Satyagraha in 1929 - probably the first volume of the biography to be followed by another. The biography clears up many misconceptions prevalent surrounding the actions and decisions of Ambedkar. With exhaustive research and list of references evident from the bibliography and notes at the end of the book, a lot of fact checking has gone into the writing of this book.

This book also debates the anamolies and discrepancies put forward by other biographies of Ambedkar. Though the book articulates in detail the key events that made Ambedkar "Babasaheb" among the untouchables and marginalized, it sometimes attempts too much correcting the chronology and justification behind Ambedkar's actions that are put forth by other biographers.

Nevertheless, this book delves deep into the political stance Ambedkar took in various occasions and how it brought about a shift in mindset of the Savarna Hindus, untouchables and the British government. The articles published by Ambedkar after the historic Mahad conference are such samples which are discussed in detail here. Ambedkar's choice of words in these articles not only urged untouchables for gaining self-respect and their readiness to fight against the inveterate beliefs, but also served as a warning to the caste Hindus and the British government on the impending battle against the denial of fundamental rights, education and basic amenities to the untouchables and the social reform acts that were not put into action.

This book is an earnest attempt that not only showers acclaims on the reforms which Ambedkar was instrumental in implementing, but also criticizes some of the decisions made by Ambedkar. The distressing events of caste inequalities that unfolded in Ambedkar's life and his painful recollection of the same are also touched upon here.

A personality who should have been celebrated as the leader of entire country is sadly being restricted as the leader of a particular community. More such works like this might serve the purpose of portraying Dr.Ambedkar as the leader of the masses.

Towards the end of the book, an episode is described where, to plan for BR Ambedkar’s impending visit for an event organized for and by ‘Untouchables’, a horse-driven cart was arranged but without a driver. The carts’ drivers were uncomfortable driving an untouchable around. Thus, one of the organizing members, inexperienced in driving, picked him up at the railway station and on the route to the venue, the cart and Ambedkar were met with a serious accident. Reflecting on the incident, Ambedkar writes and the author quotes - “To save my dignity, the Mahars of Chalisgaon had put my very life in jeopardy.”

The book tells the journey of how an untouchable boy grows on to become an image of untouchables’ and downtroddens’ emancipation, much beyond his individual self. It is the first of the two book series, and the author does a phenomenal job researching about the life and times of ‘Babasaheb’. Rising from the hinterlands of Maharashtra, relying on his sheer resilience and grit (and often debt), he travels the world, gathering (or overcompensating centuries of exclusion from education with) degrees/doctorates from LSE and Columbia University. His story is inspiring like none other. The book presents a very personal side of the great man, one where he faced untouchability despite his qualifications, bore the death of his many children, and often was guilt-ridden yet forthcoming.

The book ends on a note where Ambedkar would embark on a journey for the famous Round Table Conference. I’m waiting with high expectations for the sequel.

The book is proudly written as the story of the man - it begins with the claim that it is filled with "blood". And to cement this point, he shows how all previous biographies of Ambedkar including himself have been wrong on so many factualities through perusing the archive. But so much ink is spilled on this front. That Ambedkar was not at this event or another as some historian had claimed is good enough to prove the larger point that no good historical work has been written on Ambedkar but it is quite ineffectual to the reader so that matter should not be the hero of the book. And the book has gone too far in being "different" from all previous. In the effort to be accessible it is too informal. He even uses the word "bullshit" in the preface which to me is quite disappointing. But the main issue is in the reduced focus on political philosophy, intellectual direction, and ideology which has been the only focus on previous works. But this author because of more wide reading is better fit. He's done a little of it already - especially vis a vis Ambedkar's complicated relationship with Hinduism. But we need more of that. And also some analysis maybe. This book feels written for a future film on Ambi or something. Also too many exclamation marks.

There is no shortage of drama in Ambedkar's life. However he has not been well served by his biographers. I noticed this when I wrote an M.Phil dissertation in 2002 which was partly about Ambedkar. For biographical material, I had to rely on Dhananjay Keer's book written in the 1950s. I found this to be a most disappointing book stylistically. Keer came across as a Maharashtrian nationalist and he tried to present Ambedkar as one. By the late 1980s there was a revival of interest in Ambedkar. Also Ambedkar biographies kept appearing at regular intervals, including by serious scholars like Elenor Zeliott, Gail Omvedt and Christophe Jaffrelot. However a biography that really presents the man in flesh and blood was missing. Akash Singh Rathore claims that he is here to fill the gap. Does he succeed? Only partly. Akash Rathore is a serious academic. His writing is well informed and at the same time engaging. He clears up some of the confusion regarding Ambedkar's many academic qualifications by actually referring to original records and by visiting the places associated with Ambedkar in New York and London. The only startling information I got from this book was that Ambedkar while he was pursuing his studies in London had a serious relationship with his landlady and contemplated marriage. But I feel Rathore has also failed in bringing out the man behind the legend. A second volume is expected soon. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Crackingingly good read! Also (rightfully) shames all other biographies for their inaccuracies and making a 'mess of misinformation'.

Read this book to learn about Ambedkar in flesh and blood, and to appreciate how ridiculously qualified he was for the job of being a

lawyer
social worker
legislator
philosopher
and
architect (of the constitution).

I'm kind of stunned that before this, I hadn't read any biography of his. (Good thing, given the inaccuracies of Keer's and Khairmoday's books.)

Becoming Babasaheb book sheds lights on making of Dr B.R.Ambedkar as an intellectual and great leader through the events in his personal life and what remarkable is that it fixes some of the historical inaccuracies rooted in extensive archival research and kudos to the author for bringing the book to limelight in a new way and giving more insights.
