The battle for power between the church and the crown rages on. The winner decides the fate of witch-kind. Determined to marry Marnie at any cost, Bran joins forces with an unlikely companion. Jack has a chance meeting with a beautiful witch who needs his help (whether she’ll admit it or not). Marnie vows never to deal with another demon, but can she keep her word and at what cost? Warrior Witch is second in a series romantic fantasy.
S. L. shares her home with three wild little girls and a husband so handsome he makes everyone else look like a potato. In no particular order, she fills her time reading fiction, eating tacos, and serving her community as a child welfare social worker. At night she writes magical kissing books. Warrior Witch grabs you from the beginning and keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole adventure! The storyline is fast-paced, filled with magic and mayhem, twists and turns, demons, spirits, danger, intrigue, subterfuge, politics, adventure and romance. The characters are well developed and engaging. I love Jack and Kye's story. Bishop Ren is another complex character who plays a deep role. Marnie and Bran continue to heat up the pages with their "secret", forbidden romance. S. L. Prater pulls all of this together into one hot, magical book you really shouldn't miss!
I really loved this one. I hope Marnie and Jack get her all figured out. Now she's accepting Bran's proposal and I can't wait for the hot mess that causes
I would give this book 10 stars if I could!! This book is pretty much straight snake-juice!! Just like Ron Swanson, I do not give undue approval, but this magical book I heartily approve of!! Jess T. approved. Rectangle, America, Megaphone, Monday, Butthole…
I really enjoyed Street Witch and knew this would be as good. I was wrong: it was better!
Plot: Marnie, the hero witch, needs to return to university to complete her alchemy license. She doesn’t expect to be called back within weeks to meet the new Bishop from Stejin who grabs her attention- she’s not sure if her intrigue is natural or something darker.
Meanwhile Jack finds a witch at his cabin. He mistakes her for a thief and after capturing her, realises instead that she’s capturing him. She is gorgeous and secretive. Can he keep his hands off?
As the two fight their own battles, political intrigue, demons and prejudices run havoc. Can they fight their way to their happiness?
My thoughts:
When I go into books with multi POVs, I’m always hesitant. Usually I prefer one POV and dread the others and their plots. That wasn’t the case here. Jack and Marnie both deal with different issues throughout the book and their problems don’t overlap until towards the end but it was brilliant. One person’s POV or plot wasn’t more interesting that the others and I loved it.
Tropes: 🔥 forbidden love 🔥 jealous hero 🔥 strong heroine 🔥 cinnamon roll hero
These books do not have explicit smut and in comparison to some books, will be considered mild. However, I feel like that fits the overall story better. The glimpses into Jack and Marnie’s separate intimate moments felt more spicy than certain books ghat are very explicit. I think it’s easy to feel Marnie and Bran’s love for one another. I think I especially appreciated that Bran has more say in this book. He felt much more developed. I don’t know why, but he reminds me a little of Howl and I love it.
The end of this book was bitter sweet. I can’t wait to read book three to finally get the HEA that I have been craving since book 1.
I really loved the first book in this series, and I feel a little let down by this one.
It wasn’t because the plot changed, or that the characters were any less wonderful, but something about the tension that the book carried was off. It stopped feeling like it was high stakes. It was slower paced, and we kind of stopped moving forward with the plot. We focused a lot more on characters than storyline in this one, and something about it just didn’t work as well for me as the first book.
I do love the focus that we had surrounding Jack. His povs were really some of my favorite chapters and his character growth was absolutely fantastic. I was much more devoted to him than I was to Marnie and Bram. Their romance felt a bit stale in this one, and my heart was much less invested… with Marnie going off with another guy for big chunks of this book - leading him on (but… not) - it just didn’t work for me.
How far will you go for love? Stephanie Prater’s Street Witch series dwells into the depths of love in a world where witches aren’t safe, and yet may be your greatest heroes.
THE BLURB
Bran is determined to marry Marnie at all costs, even if it means allying with a likely enemy. For her, he would burn the world down. If only she let him. But Marnie is aware that marrying the Emperor carries a greater risk – a risk that all witches will face. Tension is as tight as a rubber band, ready to snap if one makes the wrong move. Her safest plan is to take the time and help reduce the risks and perhaps learning to look past her own prejudices.
Meanwhile Jack is busy finding his own place in the world when his Amigtas des Magus, Marnie, travels away to study. The new witch in town, Kye, teaches him that finding help sometimes comes in the most unexpected places. And sometimes at great personal cost.
TONE OF THE BOOK
Warrior Witch is a neutral toned book, bordering on positive. It does feature some drama, especially world-story tension, but characters don’t tend to dwell on them. Events happen around them, but they they still have control over their actions and the future.
SENSITIVE TOPICS
This novel does feature more sex scenes than the previous novel, Street Witch, so I am inclined to suggest it for more mature audiences. There is some violence though not overly detailed to affect squeamish readers.
SERIES SYNOPSIS
Warrior Witch is the second book in the Street Witch series. The first novel in the series was aptly named Street Witch.
Warrior Witch is 346 pages long, making it a standard length for a romance novel. Strangely enough either Stephanie’s writing or the sheer number of events will make the novel fly by (or did I just enjoy it that much?).
Warrior Witch leaves off a with a cliff hanger and not a happily ever after. It’s designed to be read as a series. Street Witch focused primarily on Bran and Marnie’s relationship, whilst Warrior Witch explored both the first relationship as well as Jack and Kye’s. You follow a group of heroes and heroines and their exploits in a world.
REVIEW
Stephanie’s Street Witch series is a set in a world rich and vibrant with history and culture. Small gestures to praise the gods, spirits to spell or bespell you at every turn, villains hiding in plain sight… Little details add up to create a sense of a vast world that will leave you begging to explore it.
I love Stephanie’s writing style and use of language. She has a natural flow that draws the reader in. An author always improves with time and practice, and Stephanie has definitely done that. Her debut novel Street Witch already blew me away, clearly highlighting to me that she is going to be an author with stands out among the crowd. Warrior Witch only emphasises this point.
If you enjoy gaslight or steampunk style novels, then the Street Witch series will definitely meet your needs. It’s a world of fine gowns, motor vehicles, dirigibles and airships. Men know how to act honourably, and the women possess a fire-hearted spirit that drives the story forward in the most interesting and sometimes unexpected ways.
FINAL WORD
Stephanie’s use of plot and twists will keep you hooked, begging for more. Her characters are delightful, full of life with their flaws and quirks. The world is dynamic and breath-taking and will invite you in and capture you. It is definitely worth reading this series.
RECOMMENDED BOOKS AND AUTHORS
Stephanie Prater’s writing style definitely reminds me of Charlie Holmberg’s world in Spellbreaker, and the follow up novel Spellmaker. Elsie was born a magic user, but she’s unlicensed. If she uses her magic, and is caught doing so, she faces grave consequences. Especially since her magic is less about creating spells and more about breaking them. Meanwhile Bacchus grew up with every luxury possible. He’s one exam away from becoming a master of his craft, and achieving everything he’s ever wanted. Right until he stumbles upon the young lady breaking one of the spells he laid himself.
If you liked the Street Witch series, then you will most likely love Meljean Brook’s Iron Seas series starting with the Iron Duke. Detective Inspector Mina is determined to discover who dumped a body on the Iron Duke’s doorstep, preferably before Duke Rhys Trahaearn discovers himself. Forced to work together, their investigation soon leads them to a conspiracy that threatens to destroy all of England.
Listen, IMHO if you want to write your book to be filled with handsome men and turn your book into a reverse harem, don't toe the line of the "why-choose" genre. Take a dive instead. Admit to yourself and your readers that you want your main female character to be c*nt deep in handsome men. Literally. And I truly don't like sex scenes that end halfway. Either commit to describing the actual sex or abstain from sexual scenes.
There are also some very...should we call them "hentai" vibes. A fertility spell that makes the MFC's womb feel "empty" and in need of filling. I mean... This series would be better without all the cringey smut scenes (misfired fertility spells and not-so-platonic friendships, I'm looking at you here) because the background plot is pretty interesting. The "cases" that our witch heroine has to solve are also pretty engaging. However, the emphasis is too much on how beautiful MFC is and how good her tits look in a dress, and how special she is, which spoils the effect of a truly gritty and prejudiced world that treats all witches like threats.
I feel like there was also an attempt at feminism hidden somewhere in the story (besides the blatantly obvious critique of women being second-class citizens within the book's world) but what the first book in the series lacked, the second also lacks, and that is deeper relationships and more meaningful conversations between female characters.
Also...the MFC's love interest is kind of...absent from the story? Not just in this book, but in the first book in the series as well.
A satisfying continuation of the Street Witch series, this time with a little more attention given to Jack and his unique abilities. There are a couple major plot lines, as Marnie's relationship with Bran continues to develop along with negotiations between the church of the cloth and the oppressed witches. I enjoyed the introduction of new witches, and the continued exploration of the world. This is a series that needs to be read in order, and I don't know how I'll really feel about it until I've read the final book in the trilogy, but I'm enjoying it so far. I think anyone who likes a healthy dose of politics and examinations of power in their fantasy worlds will enjoy this.
I loved that we got to hear from both Marnie and Jack this time and I’m hoping book 3 will let us hear from everyone. I do love that. That aside this book was great. It was nice to see such a great portrayal of a healthy relationship even if it is forbidden. Then we got to see Jack explore his new found interest in relationships even if it is with a girl who is already engaged. As with the first one these are more on the YA side but still a fantastic story! Spice: 🌶 Steam: 🔥🔥 Sweetness: 💗💗💗
Another great story. this one was focused more on Jack and newcomer, Kye. I loved their chemistry and banter. this book also introduced a new member of the cloth who was much more sympathetic to witches. the transitions in this book seemed choppy. one minute they are sitting in a room having tea and the next minute they are all the way across town with zero transition. no page break or chapter break, just one sentence to the next. was strange. it was nice to see Marnie and Bran's relationship continue and grow
Book two went where I wanted and more. The witchy writing stayed phenomenal and the love tension continued but with twists. There is more love triangle, forbidden love, witchy inventions, adventure, and more. Best of all, another awesome strong female witch is added into the mix and she brings satisfying steamy romance with her. The story is original and a fun-paced read. -I received a review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Excellent installment to the series! More action packed and well developed characters! Still wishing for more world and magic building, but the author's writing is so compelling and the characters so well written that I can just sit back and enjoy the read!
A gas lamp lit magical romp. Sexier than book one, but no complaints here! I loved getting to know more about Jack and his new girl Kye. Prater's world is textured and unique, she paints such vivid imagery and her characters will have you cheering for them. I love her sassy female witches and the men who love them. So much fun banter too! Get it today, it's a great read!
The second part of the series takes us even deeper into the political machinations of the capital and also the much darker side of magic. A new POV also appears. The story is additionally told through the eyes of Marnie's best friend, Jack, and I really liked this approach. Marnie is one of my favorite female characters, but delving into Jack's mind was a very interesting experience and allowed a broader perspective.
I got through this book a bit slower than the first, mainly because the subject matter was a bit heavier. However, I am grateful that throughout it all Stephanie was able to maintain her sharp humor, which often made me laugh to tears. 🥰
If you haven't had the opportunity to delve into the world of the Street Witch series yet, I highly recommend starting your adventure with the first installment "Street Witch". You won't regret it! 🔥❤️🔥
