Catch My Gaze
is about Monaleigh (aka Mo) who is a young girl running from a broken heart. Her husband, Brim, committed the ultimate betrayal, forcing her to flee from her family and home to Brooklyn. There, she is trying to find herself, figure out who she is, and begin to mend her broken heart. It also follows Divine, Capo/Head Hancho of the Arne family, who is also suffering from heartache after the loss of his wife Luna. Divine has sworn off love and made a promise to himself and Luna that he will never love another again. But when he and Mo meet, sparks fly, and the rest is history.
And honestly, that is one of the reasons I'm disappointed with this book. I picked
Catch My Gaze
up because I was struggling through another book and was hoping that this one would be the pick-me-up I needed since it seemed promising. It had an interesting synopsis, beautiful cover, and a unique title. So it was really disappointing and honestly ironic that this book ended up being only
slightly
better than the other book I'm struggling through.
There are really two main gripes I have with this book. The first and major one being that there is really no plot or story progression. If you look at the situations and the circumstances of the characters at the beginning of the book vs. the end of the book, there's not much movement or change, and to me, that translates to the conclusion that there is no real plot or storyline in the book.
It's basically just Mo and Divine orbiting around each other, playing with the idea of being with one another, but not fully committing to anything or each other. So, at the beginning of the book they meet, they aren't ready to for a commitment, labels, or a relationship, and so they decide to be
friends with benefits...
And at the end of the book they're in the same exact situation; still no commitment, still no label, still no real relationship.
The same goes for Mo's individual situation. At the beginning of the book, she is heartbroken over having been cheated on by her husband, but they're still married just not speaking. And at the end of the book, even after multiple encounters and even an altercation with Divine, the situation is the same! Brim and Mo are still married and not speaking, only now, there is a third party involved.
Pivot to Divine's individual "story", at the beginning of the book, there is tension, strife, toxicity, and animosity between him and his older brother D'Aire. And when we get to the final page, absolutely nothing has changed. They still hate each other's guts and are always going at it in the most disrespectful and toxic of ways.
There are 246 pages...and when you stop to really think about what you've read, you realize nothing has actually happened or moved forward. It's just page after page of Divine and Mo interacting and not even in a way that was all that entertaining, engaging, or romantic.
The other main issue I had with this book was just some of the ridiculousness that was going on. There is one thing in particular that really had me like "WHAT?!" but I don't want to get too into it because it'll be a spoiler. But I will say, it happens outside a club and involves birthday gifts and a dead body... But overall, there were just some nonsensical things going on in the book that consistently took me out of the story, because when I would read it, I would be like
"who the f*ck would say this!" or "who would do something like this, this doesn't make any sense!"
One OTHER thing that was really disappointing for me was the execution of the "Catch My Gaze" phrase! It was so overused and oversaturated throughout the book that it immediately lost its oomph and flare. I can 100% see how that phrase —when used between lovers, sparingly and in JUST the right moments— would lend itself to feels and super heated moments in the best of ways. But immediately after it was used the first time, it was repeated at least six times in the same chapter...and these are SHORT chapters. It's a shame because I feel like it could have been a really cute thing between Mo and Divine, but the execution just fell short.
So yea...I really didn't enjoy this book. To be honest, I was originally going to give it 2 stars, but after sitting with it for a bit and having the revelation that there was basically no plot progression after 246 pages...I had to charge it because in the end, I feel like I wasted my time.
There IS a sequel to this book, but I definitely won't be reading it. Now I just have to push my way through the original book that I was not enjoying!
