A manhwa in which everyone’s obsessed with Soongap, and I too am obsessed with Soongap and would commit atrocities to protect his precious smile.

This was such a great read, so many charming and heartfelt moments, a really sweet romance between a shunned outsider and a healing survivor who want nothing more than a peaceful, quaint life together. I loved reading how they healed each other’s wounds, both emotional and physical, and along the way learned to care for and trust other people in the surrounding village as well.

I’m going to miss Soongap and Bongchun so much 😭❤️

An underrated gem.

This story is so sweet and adorable, yet it holds the perfect balance of sadness and trauma. It’s a lovely tale about a feared outsider and a traumatised slave who slowly, tenderly heal each other. Soongap and Bongchun - oh, how I adore you both. I felt every ache and every flicker of hope with you. I wish you endless happiness. And the art is so beautiful and irresistibly cute. <333333

I especially love stories where one character has lost a lover and, through grief, finds love again. I really loved the exploration of the love between Soongap and Mojil, especially as they were childhood friends who grew up as slaves and, through all their suffering, only ever truly had each other. That bond - built on shared pain, survival, and quiet affection - made their love feel sacred. So when Mojil dies, it isn’t just the loss of a lover; it’s the loss of Soongap’s whole world. You can feel that emptiness in every panel that follows.

And yet, that’s exactly what makes the blossoming love between Soongap and Bongchun so deeply moving. It’s not about replacing what was lost - it’s about finding the strength to open your heart again, even when it’s been shattered before. Soongap isn’t alone anymore; he’s cared for and he’s loved again. And the most beautiful part is that it never once feels like he stops loving Mojil. His love for both of them coexists - one as a memory, the other as a new beginning. They’re never in competition, because Mojil’s story ended too soon, whilst Bongchun’s begins with healing.

That balance - the way the author writes grief, love, and renewal without diminishing any part of it - shows just how skilled they are at crafting emotional, believable relationships. It’s realistic, it’s beautiful, and it left me so genuinely happy for Soongap. I would commit murder for this man. His smile is so precious :(

Also, the way Bongchon Bride handles the themes of slavery and abuse is incredibly thoughtful: it never romanticises or sensationalises pain, but treats it with empathy and nuance. The attention to detail - Soongap’s dark circles, his emotional torment, the constant nightmares and insomnia, his quiet suicidal thoughts - all make his eventual healing so powerful. Watching him discover joy and tenderness was everything.

Also… they are very horny. But so so cute.

All in all, this is probably one of the best manhwas I’ve ever read.

Still, one of the best reads I've ever had. I remember first reading it in 2022 and literally falling in love at first sight. It's amazing how it explores topics related to agriculture, slavery, familial relationships, royalty dynamics, and many more during the Joseon Era, all of which can take you on a spiral of human emotions. I literally cried so much, but this book also made my heart feel so full it makes me want to live. Despite the amount of subtle violence depicted in this period drama, everything surrounding the two main characters is so gentle. Two traumatized and lonely people, healing and building a life together—oh my Soongap and Bongchun, they're so precious to me. I really love everything about them. They're just two people trying to live a simple and peaceful life, and I am so glad they rightfully got that in the end. Nobody deserves it more than they do. I love them so much! I couldn't ask for more. Bongchun is such a wonderful character, and same goes to Soongap. They are so perfect together.

I think what really struck me about this story are the side characters. Mojil really made me cry, you know? I hope his kind soul is at peace. I'm glad Soongap managed to properly make peace with himself and feel safe enough to settle down with Bongchun, because with Mojil, what he wanted most was to run away with him. Losing Mojil made him lose his drive in life. I'm sure Mojil is happy for him now, that it's okay.

Next, Pilgyeon really struck me. I am not justifying his actions, and I am never siding with his wrongdoings, but I believe his end is really cruel for him. Soongap is the very reason he tried so hard, but in the end, Soongap was erased from him. I think it's his retribution for the things that he did, but it really makes me so sad. As a child, Pilgyeon witnessed things that no one should, and yet he chose to prioritize the one promise he could hold onto: to look after Soongap. Pilgyeon’s efforts, though misguided at times, come from a place of deep care and desperation. He wants to do right by Soongap, even if it’s flawed or self-serving. He is caught between a desire to protect Soongap and his own internal struggles—a combination of naivety and goodness. And all his life, right before he loses everything, including his memory, he wakes up each day and continues to push through life, showing up for Soongap even when his heart is broken. His persistence, even when his heart is shattered, speaks to his resilience and the complexity of his character. Pilgyeon is a tragic yet deeply human character, struggling to navigate his love, his past, and his sense of duty.

I am convinced that this peak, rich story is highly underrated, because why are there no people constantly talking about it?

Anyway, I want to see more from Bongchun and Soongap, but I know that they're living their best lives. I am tearing up. I hope they don't grow old, and they get to be together for many lifetimes' worth because that is what they deserve.

BRUHHHH ive tried reading this twice before and dropped it because it wasnt time. My brain was rotted by only having read bj alex, killing stalking and painter of the night. NOW I CAN APPRECIATE A GREEN FLAG. True, he can kill a man with his bare hands and he might have given a lot of side characters and npcs internal bleeding but he cant help it! This piece came in time as well because i am getting sick and tired about reading all about these rich people with their champagne problems while these people have real ass problems. Gratitude does turn enough into a feast 🙏😭🫶🥺 like we dont need a room full of treeasures as long as we’re with the one we love yalll this is so cute and romantic and BONCGCHUNNNNNNNNN i am crying.

I’m in the gym cafeteria hoping they dont have sex in the last chapters because i dont wanna cry and goon at the same time js henry christ. I am looking forward to the fisherman bongchun sidestories because i got attached 😭 like me and the gays went through a lot of trauma together. Like none of the loverboys and girls were safe in this one. Everyone was having their own rollercoaster love affair and the gays get the worst of it. Like im so happy that we get to see the life of slaves in historical south korea instead of all the fine silks in the other dramas like damn what a gut punch ARGHHH i loved this so much.

Me? Loving a Korean BL Manhwa? Who would’ve thought? 😭

This manhwa is such a delightful surprise. It’s been in my tbr for almost two years now and I’m glad I finally got to pick it up. I love everything about it, the art style, the setting, the relationship of Soongap and Bongchun, even the main antagonist, Pilgyeon is very interesting.

Overall, a very beautiful story. If someone is looking into starting their BL journey, this might be a great place to start it with. Tho there are some CWs that you might want to look into.

one of my favoritesssss !! only flaw is chapter 83 is such a gut wrenchingly, heartbreaking, completely disgusting chapter that I don’t understand why they continued to let the brother live especially after that BUT other than that it’s still such a beautiful story

For the past 2 years, I've been doing this media wrap up on my IG where at the end of the year, I make a list that includes my top favourite books, manga, manhwa, albums among other things. It's usually a post made up of 8 - 10 slides.

I though I'd found my top 6 favourite manhwas of the year but that's going to have to change. I need to drop one manhwa so I can add this one to that list. 5 days ago, I'd never even heard of this story and now I'm out here wondering why on earth stories like this one get buried, ignored and forgotten while so many toxic stories go viral.

Bongchon & Soongap have one of The Healthiest relationships I've ever come across in a Korean Bl manhwa. It's everything around them that complete and utter shit.

Bongchon might be a giant (half giant maybe? I think he's around 6'8 and built like a bear while Soongap is around 5'7 and is of average build) but he's the softest giant to ever exist. He is patient, caring, treats Soongap like a literal egg, and above all understands the meaning of consent (you know how hard this last bit is to find in these Korean -and also some Japanese - works)

Despite our main characters relationship being so adorable and both of them being the greenest flags ever, things (well, mostly people) around them aren't great. Without going into too much detail I'll just give the trigger warnings for rape and incest.

I don't feel like the brother got what he deserved in the end. He was so horrible even b4 he did what he did. If you look at Soongap's face throughout the story, any time he was close to that man... He was always so fucking terrified. That asshole should've had a much worse end. But since Bongchon & Soongap got their freedom and happy ending, I'm largely okay with the ending

My Favourite Quotes
Soongap to Himself: I tried to die but my body wouldn't cooperate. To take your own life, you need to be really determined to die - I wasn't quite there. Dying was terrifying, but living was excruciating

Bongchon to Soongap: You're the first person to who's ever been worried that I might get hurt. My parents were always worried about me hurting someone else. I've been strong ever since I was little you see...

I finished the entire Bongchon Bride webtoon on the 13th of this month.
It only took me around five days to finish 84 chapters.
I enjoyed most of this story and I was surprised how well written it was compared to other Korean webtoons I've read.
However this story has a lot of issues such as the incest scenes, the r*pe scene(also incest) and the unnecessary long s*x scenes(mostly Soongap with Bongchun) throughout the story.
The story also relied heavily on flash backs,Soongap's dreams of important points of the story instead of those scenes happening in real time which affected the impact of those scenes greatly.
The writer Gaepi Sohn probably wrote the story in this narrative to avoid writing non-romance situations in real time so they wouldn't have to deal with the complications of writing Soongap's story from the age of 11 to 29.
Another issue with the story was the various plot holes and the lack of explanation of certain things such as why are only some people made to slaves and not others who were clearly in debt as well,if Soongap knew the true reason for his mother's s*icide,or why his recollecting of events was so vastly different than his younger brother about his mother, etc.
The entire premise of Soongap and Bongchun's relationship is that Soongap isn't afraid of Bongchun despite him being a "half gaint" and that Bongchun is kind to Soongap and saved him from death, other than that they hardly know anything about each other.
I wish the main characters had more development of their relationship instead of rushing to have "love" scenes every other chapter after chapter 16.
I'm glad the story had a good ending at least and that Soongap and his friends was freed from slavery.
I wish he would visit his family grave but throughout the story he only visited his late lover and he never had a reunion with his friends after the final events which was greatly disappointing.
Well at least the ending wasn't as bad as the ending for What Lies at the End of the Road.

This is a beautifully unique story with expressive art, an engaging plot, and wonderful characters who are easy to root for.

Bongchun is the heart and soul of the story- a gentle giant who has to reckon with his strength, but would much rather live with only kindness in his heart. Misunderstood and stigmatised for his size and past, Bongchun is lonely and isolated. He is the perfect partner for Soongap, who has already experienced innumerable traumas, and struggles to find meaning in a life which seems far too grim to be worth living. Together, these two hearts heal each other. The storytelling is particularly sweet here, focusing much more on the growing intimacy and romance between the two rather than just their physical relationship (though that comes through a lot too. We're smutty.)

The setting is suitably realistic, with all the grim realities of a feudal time with unfair landlords, the daily indignities of slavery, and the cruelty of lineage/parentage and the whims of fate. At times, it was difficult to read specifically because the life being portrayed is so unfair and cruel (TWs necessary). Soongap's situation is pretty awful and sad. But even with all those troubles, there was so much beauty and love in the story, which made it very emotional and satisfying to read. I was a huge fan of the ending, which genuinely wraps up every plot thread, and leaves the reader happy with every character's resolutions- even the villains'.

Overall, this is one of my favourite BLs because it's a very unique, well-written story, supported by great artwork. I can't name a single thing that could have been done better.

The MC's are not super toxic for once and I like the story, but at some point they were starting to irk me in some minimal way just because they are too protective of each other and not of themselves each to the point it wasn't helping the relationship at all.

As the story progresses, they really needed allies, but they keep saying "I don't think it's a good idea to get associated with the bandits!". Yes. It's not a good idea. It's also not a good idea for two guys that have powerful people after them each for various reasons to not have allies even if those are scummy, which they literally are just communists anyway. Their reasoning to not getting too involved is that they can get in trouble, but like, y'all are in trouble. Actually these people are in trouble because of y'all cause y'all led sickos to search the mountain up and down and they didn't snitch. My point is that the MCs are so protective of each other that they can take any risks even if they are not that risky, to prevent a more longterm risk, which ultimately led them to get exposed to the big bads longer.

Another problem is that it's hard to get very attached to the characters since as I said the MCs are sometimes too self-reliant so they end up interacting with so many people and never actually getting interesting development related to those people nor do those people get much to do.

bongchon bride is the emotional and heartwrenching tale of bongchun (named for spring and the mountain in the title) who buys the near-death soongap for 50 bags of rice and takes him to his home to nurse him back to health.

bongchun is a giant of a man - 205 cm if i remember correctly. and though he is strong and a hard worker, his bearing and slow speech makes him the village boogeyman. and yet, he is the only one who sees a slave half beaten to death and lets the lord of the manor con him to take said slave away. bongchan devotedly cares for soongap without any expectations of something in return.

soongap has lived a very difficult life. the event that lead him to be beaten and cast out near break his will to live. but under the meticulous and caring hands of bongchun, soongap rediscovers a will to not just survive, but to have a life in filled with happiness and peace.

i loved them both so much. they fought so hard for their happy ending with each other. i hope so much that we get more side stories of them one day; just being happy and living domestically as fishermen.

aside from them as the heart of the bongchon bride, there is a wide cast of complex and fleshed out characters that brings this story to life.

This was so good!!!! I absolutely loved Bongchun and Soongap, both as a couple and as individual characters; each character honestly felt very nicely written, and the plot was well thought out and without any plot holes as far as I noticed. Loved each and every single character (except for Pilgyeon and the other dumbass nobles, of course). Exceptional writing through and through!
It was incredibly sad, but I'm so glad it had a happy ending for all of the good characters!!! Furthermore, the dark parts of the story didn't feel baseless and superficial - they actually drove the plot and added to the characters (for example, while I usually hate incest and it feels like a random plot point just to appeal to a certain kink, this time, it felt like an actual driven characteristic of a character that added to Pilgyeon and his story. Idk how else to explain it, but yeah. As dark and messed up as it is, I'm not frustrated by its addition).

Def recommend!!!

¡Una obra maestra del BL! 🌟

I actually read this a long time ago as it was coming out in English and it’s legit one of my favorite manhwa of all time if not all time favorite…You can read it on manta for cheap (they have an affordable monthly subscription thing) tho it’s obviously censored there. The premise probably doesn’t sound exciting or interesting but the actual story is completely different. The two main characters are so in love and I just . Love them both so much I can’t even articulate how good it is!!! The paneling and art style is also just STELLAR !! Ignore the premise and go in blind and I promise you will love it too.

This is a hall of fame BL manhwa. The art style is adorable and the 18+ scenes had me giggling because of how cute they were. True love didn’t exist before Bongchun and Soongap. I need hd surround sound voice acted 4k 1080p animations of the entire thing. I can not underestimate how in love I am with this comic. How in love with the world the author builds and the characters within it. I will be reading and rereading until the end of time.

Such an amazing story. I thought the characters were interesting and well fleshed out. I really liked seeing Soongap go from someone who was so closed down and closed off to being open and happy by the end. Bongchun is a sweetie. Even Pilgyeon, though he is not forgiven for his actions, was an interesting, complex character to read about. Thank goodness for happy endings.

My favorite BL ever they are the cutest couple. I love them such a healthy relationship and also amazing. The only thing I don’t like about this book is the fact that it’s not in color but other than that, I freaking love this book 10 out of 10 if I could rate this 1 million out of five stars, I would amazing. this comic has a very specific microtrope that i like where character A finds character B one foot in the grave and takes them home, nurses them back to health, and then they live together and fall in love and yada yada the rest is history (bonus if character A is a social recluse so they can be outcasts together)
