"Take me out to the ball game" has a murderous meaning for Sophie and the crew. When Shirley, a friend of her mother's sees a dead man near the baseball field in their senior retirement community, the amateur sleuths spring into action. Will Sophie be able to find a cold blooded killer? Will Herb hit a home run? Will Streetman and his new pal Thor eat all the hot dogs at the concession stand? All of these questions and more are answered in the latest Sophie Kimball- Gregory mystery!

I love this series. It has everything - a keep you guessing mystery, a little romance, humor and the quirky but lovable seniors who are members of Sophie's mother Harriet's book club. Of course, we can't forget Herb, Paul and his crew. A new canine character makes an appearance, Thor the Great Dane has a "talent" that will help Sophie out of a jam. Streetman and Essie are ready to solve the mystery and the scenes at the ballpark, with Streetman and Thor, are some of the funniest I've read.

If you're looking for mystery, humor and a fun way to spend an afternoon, I highly recommend this book!

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Shirley has a problem, bodies keep vanishing, and no one believes her story. With the local softball players rallying everyone to cheer them on at games, people have a good excuse to pretend that Shirley is just trying to get attention. But when an attempt on her life leaves her unconscious and in the hospital, people sit up and take notice.

The real question in this latest book in the “Sophie Kimball Mystery” series, Strike Out 4 Murder, comes down to whose body is it that Shirley found, and where did it go? It could be a missing softball player or a stranger; no one knows because Shirley is the only one who has seen the body. It's hard to figure out what happened when no one knows who is dead or how they died. But there are plenty of clues about the man’s identity, and the suspects aren’t too hard to figure out even without a body. Evidence is rare, but there is enough for Phee to investigate and develop a solution.

Once the body is found, and they realize that Shirley isn’t crazy after all, Phee and company set a trap for the killer. Giving up her free time, Phee, her mother, and the pinochle club spread out at the softball game, keeping their eyes and ears open for clues. However, it takes the police and everyone else to bring down this killer. Once caught, Shirley breathes a sigh of relief. There is plenty of humor and dog antics to keep everyone happy. Readers will cheer on Phee, Shirley, and the ball players as the investigation comes down to the wire in this fast-paced mystery that will have you chuckling with delight.

"Strike Out 4 Murder" the 11th instalment in the Sophie Kimball Mystery series by J.C. Eaton. When softball fever overtakes Sun City West, foul balls and foul play add up to murder . . .

I found myself engrossed in the story and reading it in almost one day. I love the characters which are well developed. There is plenty of humour, Especially with Paul and his fish…

The mystery is interesting, well plotted as well as full of twists and turns. Always an entertaining, fun read. This is one of my favourite series and I always buy in Paperback as I know I will read again.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy loving friends.

Oh my gosh, this series is constantly so much fun! I'm always laughing as I read the hilarious antics of Phee's mom and her friends...and who could forget their sidekicks, the pinochle guys? And little Streetman's a fave of mine, but I'm little biased because I love dachsies and dachsie mixes. My dog's behavior's not a whole lot different from Streetman's, except she doesn't bite.

Shirley got the spotlight this time around since she was the target. I just love that lady and she always cracks me up with the stuff she says. It was so sweet her friend lent her a Great Dane for protection. Once again, the case eventually was connected up nice and neat with the case that Nate and Marshall were on. The perps sure went to lotsa trouble for what they were into, but the dead guy was even into something worse. Take an afternoon and treat yourself to another fun visit to Sun City West! And Phee's the voice of sanity there if you need a little bit of that too! ;)

This is my favorite cozy series but this one only gets 3 stars because Harriet and Streetman didn’t even get costarring roles. Phee and her extremely boring husband, Marshall, are the anchors for all the colorful characters to bounce off. I was very disappointed with this one. I hope the authors realize they have a goldmine with the characters who orbit around Phee and should always get the most ink.

This is the first book in the Sophie Kimball series I have read. But I loved it so much that I can’t wait to go back and get lost in the first 10 books! Wonderful characters that are well developed. You will be laughing and rolling your eyes at some of the antics that Sophie’s mother and her friends get into as they “discretely” try to help Sophie (Phee) and the gang at Williams Investigations solve a murder. And when you factor in Streetman, a chiweenie who keeps things hopping, and Thor, a great dane, you can’t help but enjoy the book. While not a lot of baseball playing happens, you still enjoy some activity on the ballfield. I am already looking forward to the 12th book in the series and can’t wait to get lost in the pages! This is a fun cozy mystery series.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Strike Out 4 Murder by J.C. Eaton is a humorous mystery filled with softball, obligations, and fraud.

Will Phee determine who killed Buster before Shirley is the next body found?
We start with Shirley finding a body, running to Harriett's house for help, only to return and find the body missing. Phee and Marshal are at Harriett's home when Shirley shows up. However, without a body, there isn't a crime. So, everyone goes on their way. Except now, someone is after Shirley. She must know something that she doesn't realize or not.

Phee brings Lyndy, her friend, into this investigation to do some background work for her and a few other things. Lyndy may even find a love interest.

Marshal and Nate are busy with an insurance fraud case that gets bigger each time they catch a culprit. However, they are still assisting with Buster's murder.
"Besides, we all know we're going to wind up dealing with that case whether or not we're called to consult. Harriet's book club ladies will never give us a minute of peace if they think there's a killer lurking around their neighborhood."

Harriet and the book club ladies are busy taking care of Shirley for most of this installment. But watch for the softball game with Thor, Streetman, and hotdogs. It will have you laughing out loud. Although, for the most part, Streetman and Essie (his cat) are well-behaved.

Character That Stole the Show
Phee's aunt Ina is the character that outshines everyone else in this story. She has the most outrageous outfits, her caftans in the brightest colors and patterns, and her hair always braided with ribbons and such. Watch for the sports bar scene with Ina, Lyndy, Paul, Phee, Marshal, and a few more regulars. The whole scene, from the fish to the fluttering eyelashes, had me cracking up.

She never ceases to amaze me. I can't imagine being Nate or Phee growing up with Ina and Harriet as mothers. It would either be a riot or constant times of nonbelief.

Oh, and she announces a possible new career at the end. Sounds like fun.

Four Stars
My rating for Strike Out 4 Murder by J.C. Eaton is four stars. It was entertaining but seemed a bit slow at the start. Once it got moving, wow! It was hard to put it down. I highly recommend this book and series. I know I jumped in the last half, but I hope to go back and read the first four as soon as my schedule allows.

Thank you for dropping by! I hope you enjoyed this review of Strike Out 4 Murder by J.C. Eaton.

Strike Out for Murder, the eleventh book in the Sophie Kimball mystery series by J.C. Eaton, is filled with intrigue, quirky characters, and a touch of humor.

When Shirley, a family friend, claims to have seen a dead man near the Arizona retirement community’s baseball field, Sophie (“Phee”) Kimball and friends retrace her steps. However, the man is no longer there. Did Shirley really see a dead body, or is she having hallucinations? Is there something evil afoot? Shirley’s doubters are silenced when an attempt is made on her life, and Phee and company begin an investigation for real.

Coming in on the eleventh book in the series was a bit of a challenge. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the story, there are a lot of characters to sort through. I get that each of them likely has a complicated back story. One thing that really impressed me is the way the local authorities work closely with Phee's husband, Marshall and Williams Investigations. It is refreshing to see this level of cooperation in a cozy mystery and, for once, there is a legitimate reason for the private investigators to be involved. For her part, Phee is quite practical and seems like a skilled investigator. I’m not sure what to make of her attitude toward Streetman (her mom’s dachshund mix). She seems almost resentful of the dog, and as an animal lover myself, I find this an annoying quality. Her mother, on the other hand, is a hoot! Quite a character!

Although the book is entitled Strike Out 4 Murder, and the cover depicts Streetman holding a baseball and in full regalia on the baseball field, there is remarkably little actual baseball in the story. I picked this book because I hoped it would give a good feel for the game, but other than a few mentions and a scene or two mainly dealing with the concession stand, the story seems more baseball-adjacent.

Overall, Strike Out 4 Murder is an entertaining and satisfying novel. It whet my curiosity to begin the series with the first book to get a better feel for the intricacies of the recurring characters. I hope to do that in the near future.

Note: I received an ARC of Strike Out 4 Murder from NetGalley and Beyond the Page Publishing. The above is my honest review.

The husband and wife team who write the Sophie Kimball Mysteries, as well as several other cozy mystery series, are on their eleventh book in this series with Strike Out 4 Murder. If you have read other books in this series you will find this one fits into the comfortable, predictable pattern of the rest. Sophie Kimball is a bookkeeper/accountant for a private detective agency in Sun City West, Arizona, where her retired mother, Harriet, lives. Newly married to one of the detectives in the agency, Sophie continues to get involved in investigations. Over time she has gotten more comfortable with searching for clues and putting together the pieces of a mystery puzzle. Sometimes she disregards the questionable legality of her actions.

The reader knows only too well Sophie’s eating habits and her need for caffeine and a good swim. Despite being a little too predictable, this cozy mystery does offer up a good plot—very complicated. It is actually too involved for even the most astute reader to be able to predict the outcome. Several times Sophie thinks she can solve the crime only to discover a missing piece of information that changes everything. Her mother’s dog Streetman, a Chiweenie, and the inclusion of a new dog character Thor, a Great Dane, both add humor, interest, and excitement. Harriet’s book club friends and the men’s pinocle club have major roles in Strike Out 4 Murder with some amusing threads involving Paul and his passion for fishing and Herb who takes up softball.

At this point in the series, I think I enjoy the books more as a reunion with characters than as a captivating mystery. It is fun and well written, but the series probably needs to draw to a close soon.

Sophie Kimball mysteries are laugh out loud, read alone books, that build on the first book, the one that brought Phee nee Sophie to Arizona in the first place, to dispel a book curse for her Mom’s book club. Another interesting aspect of this series is that two parallel problems/mysteries going on at the same time always end up entwining. This latest book is a cross between Abbott & Costello’s bit about “who’s on first” and the night of the living dead, when one of the Book Club gals finds and then loses a dead body. Phee Kimball knows that her mom’s/Harriet’s group of gals are easily excitable but they are not senile, so when Shirley says she say a dead guy in the ditch, chances are she saw it. On the business side of things, Phee’s office, Williams Investigations, where Phee is the accounting department, her boss Nate and her new hubby Marshall are busy with an insurance fraud case. I am wondering how and when these two stories are going to intersect, which keeps me riveted to the plot line. Not to mention that these stories are just so darn funny. The characters are all so unique, and well, there is no other way to say it than, hilarious. And Phee’s moments of talking to herself, usually in a snarky but sweet way has me smiling with each turn of the page. I have been known to chortle a time or two when the topic of “sweet little man, Streetman” is brought up. Streetman is Harriet’s neurotic chiweenee who has a life of his own, in fact, he “adopted a kitten in the last book. Be sure to grab yourself a frosty beverage and a hot dog or two before settling in to this latest Sophie Kimball mystery, it is a home run of a story!

One of the Book Club Ladies had a life flash before her eyes and it's got the all of the ladies in a tizzy. When Phee and Marshal, go to check things out, the body is gone...yep, it flashed right before Shirley's eyes. But Shirley isn't one to over react, so Marshal and Phee know something happened, but not what. Soon, it seems that someone may be ghosting Shirley and Marshal and Phee can't quite figure it out, but then it snowballs and Marshal is out of town working on a case and Phee is still digging...and inadvertently sets her best friend up with a murder suspect.

With the folks in Sun City West either on high alert or completely unaware, Phee has her work cut out for her to figure out who has it in for Shirley, who killed a man and how to keep her Mother at bay through all of it. It's not an easy job, but it's one that Phee seems to excel at, even if she's just the bookkeeper at an investigative office.

This is a great series and I adore this husband and wife writing team. If you haven't read one of their books, check them out! Everything they write is great and each reads fine as a stand alone.

A fun and enjoyable read.

I love older people in a book as they get to act as crazy as they want without any explanation. A feisty and curious book club that Phee’s mom belongs to and Herb with his pinochle crew add plenty to the enjoyment of this story. Phee’s Aunt Ina marches and dresses to her own drum which is rather amusing. Phee and Marshall make a great couple and handles the crew of geriatrics with humor, grace and lots of love.

The mystery was clever, and kept the reader guessing until the end. I laughed out loud, frequently, at the antics of the older people and Phee’s response to it all. Phee is a great character. She’s quite humble about solving the mysteries, and she often missteps and just gets lucky.

The writing style was enjoyable as the story flowed well with the who-dun-it interspersed with a case Marshall and his partner were working on. I’ve read book one in the series, which I also enjoyed, and I didn’t have a difficult time reading this book and was able to understand who was who. I need to go back and read the books in between as this was a delightful read.

My review is voluntary and all comments and opinions are my own.

Princess Fuzzypants here: Is Shirley going crazy? She sees a dead body that then disappears and everyone wonders what is going on. But when the body of a baseball player shows up and someone puts a tracking device on her car and threatened her, Phee and her crowd realize she is in real danger. Unfortunately Phee’s husband Marshall is busy following the leads in an insurance fraud case that he and his partner are working so it is up to Phee and her mother’s posse to figure out the truth.

As it turns out, the two cases are interconnected and Phee ties the answers up for the two detectives who could not or would not detect if something bit them. As always, Phee and the others at the detective agency have to be the grownups in the room. Her mother has an eclectic and quirky group of friends from the seniors community where they all live. There will be some eye rolling as some of them put the “E” in eccentric. Still it is an entertaining story as always with a good mystery to solve. Five purrs and two paws up.

Not you see him…and now you don’t. When a dead body goes missing, Phee’s retired, but not retiring, mother Harriet insists that her amateur sleuth/bookkeeper daughter find out what happened. If only it were that easy. Will Phee Strike Out 4 Murder?

Sun City West is a retirement complex in Arizona. The whole town is caught up in hobbies as varied as pinochle to book clubs. The latest fad is softball. Yet, gossip seems to be the most useful sport.

Will Phee find the killer with the help of her private detective husband in time to save her mother from the murderer’s wrath? Will I ever stop laughing from all the antics these oldsters get up to? Join in on their fun with this laugh-out-loud cozy mystery that is chock full of unique characters. 4 stars for Strike Out 4 Murder!

If you haven't read anything in this series, you've missed a lot of fun!
Some real characters are living in the retirement community (including Phee's mother and aunt) and the PI firm where Phee (Sophie Kimball) is the accountant while her new husband (Marshall) is an investigator/partner.
This time starts with a flap at the softball field where a body is seen and then disappears twice. The third time it doesn't disappear and it belongs to a local small time bookie.
Let the sleuthing (and more hilarity) begin! Great fun!

Strike Out 4 Murder by writing team J.C. Eaton is book #11 in the Sophie Kimball Mystery series. This is another exciting cozy mystery from these authors. One of the book club members, Shirley, spots a dead body by the golf course but it is gone when the book club members rush to the spot. Amateur sleuth Sophie "Phee" Kimball gets involved in trying to help solve the mystery. All the usual secondary characters, the book club ladies who are fun and quirky, the pinochle guys and Paul the fisherman, set out to help and this leads to some real craziness. The scene in Tailgators was hysterical. As was the concession stand incident with Paul and Phee. This was a really fun read.

I received an ARC and this is my honest review.

I’ve been with Sophie “Phee” Kimball from the first book. It amazes me the diversity of ideas the authors come up with. Each mystery has several cases going on that seem unrelated but somehow roll into a cohesive whole at the end.
Phee didn’t completely solve this one and I liked that bit of change up.
I’m a big fan of Phee, Marshall, Nate and Augusta. Phee’s mom Harriet didn’t grate on my nerves the way she sometimes does.
If you haven’t met the inhabitants of Sun City West and friends, I recommend getting to know them and giving this cozy mystery series a try. I do think Strike Out 4 Murder could be read as a stand-alone.

Now you see it, now you don't. Shirley is certain she saw a dead body at the softball field but it's vanished when she returns with witnesses. Did she really see what she thinks she saw, is it sunstroke or has she begun a trip round the bend leaving her marbles behind? Knowing Shirley there really is a missing body and that leads to a missing ball player, Buster.
Batter up for another hysterically funny mystery set in Sun City West, AZ with Phee, Marshall and everybody else as they try to catch a killer before Shirley becomes the next corpse. A great series to help you read away your stress.

This is the eleventh installment in the Sophie Kimball My stery series. Shirley sees a dead man and when she tries to report it, he’s gone. Is Shirley being gaslighted or was there really a dead body? I liked this story. Phee’s mother wasn’t nearly as crazy as in previous books. Instead, we deal with her friend Shirley.

I liked the twists, turns and characters that brought the story to a great conclusion. Watch out for the older folks in Arizona’ sub-community of Surprise.

Netgalley gave me an advanced copy after the publication date. I am not required to leave a positive review. I am looking forward to the next story in the series.

This book made me laugh, kept me hooked and surprised me with plenty of twists and turns. The slapstick end was very funny and I loved big revelation.
It's one of the best book in this series, I wasn't a fan of the previous but this one was a very entertaining ride.
Phee was great, her mother a bit less obnoxious and the Paul the fisher and the guys were very funny. Thor the big Dane was lovely and I hope there will be more of these characters in the next books.
Can't wait to read the next one.
Highly recommended.

Strike out For Murder is the eleventh book in this highly entertaining series with Sophie (Phee) Kimball and her mother's wacky friends in her retirement community. This time her mother's friend Shirley sees a dead body near the golf course, but before she can show anyone, the body mysteriously disappears. When Shirley is attacked, Phee thinks Shirley is in danger and uses her sleuthing skills to ferret out a killer. This was a fun quick read with plenty of suspects, quirky characters, with a few laugh out moments sprinkled throughout.

This is book 11 in the Sophie Kimball series and it's a good addition . Sophie and the seniors living at Sun City West are supporting Herb's effort to get fit by attending the men's softball league he's joined. When she discovers a dead body behind the concession stand it sets off a series of events. She's a Private Detective so the gang assumes she will be finding the killer. Momma and Auntie are always available to offer advice in the investigation. A fun read.

Phee always finds herself squashed between her mother and her friends. They were a lively, dramatic bunch with overactive imaginations. With A vanishing body and wild accusations of the crazies going around, things got intriguing when Shirley got knocked out. Not as exciting as I would have liked, but it was very entertaining.

Great characters

If you are senior enough to be in a senior community or have a family member I one,,this book will delight you. I have never laughed so much as I read a book. I am 76 and most of my friends live in a senior community. I know these people and love them. Even their relationships with their pets make sense. I highly recommend the serious.

Another roller coaster ride with Phee and her mom's book club and friends. The corpse that keeps on going missing and the fear of the older crowd is at the heart of the book. Luckily Williams Investigations again plays a part in finding out who the victim was connected to and bringing a murderer to justice. A fun, entertaining read, very light and lots of laughs.
