Princess Evelyn has spent her entire life striving to be the proper princess expected of her…only to suddenly discover that she’s not a princess at all, merely a decoy unknowingly masquerading as the heir to the enchanted throne.

With her identity stripped away and her future uncertain, Evelyn struggles to find her purpose and discovers it in a most unexpected source when she stumbles upon whispers that the true princess’s betrothed is plotting to use his upcoming marriage to steal her kingdom's rare and precious magic. Desperate to prove that her life has meaning other than being an unwitting decoy, Evelyn comes up with a plan to marry the prince before he learns that she's a fake in order to protect the kingdom she still cares for.

Prince Ryland has his own reasons for agreeing to the hasty union, for the magic in the princess’s royal bloodline is his last chance to save his kingdom from ruin. However, his careful schemes don't exactly go according to plan when his unconventional wife proves thoroughly uncooperative and seems to be hiding secrets of her own.

As the two navigate the façades, deceit, and dangers threatening them, the lines between enemies and lovers soon begin to blur…yet their growing love comes at a price. In her effort to protect her kingdom, Evelyn might have just put herself and all her people in grave danger.

I first got the idea for Façade over a decade ago while reading another story about a decoy princess, during which I predicted the perfect way I thought the story would go…only to reach the end and find myself immensely disappointed with how the story unfolded instead. Those feelings were short-lived when I realized that it was better the book had gone in a completely different direction as it meant I could write the plot I’d imagined myself! Though it took years, I’m so happy to have not only finally brought that idea to life, but that it transformed into something much grander than I initially brainstormed. I’m very happy with what this story became and hope you enjoy my take on a decoy princess as well as her story of a marriage of convenience with her “enemy”.

3.5 stars....Started slow...some parts dragged..I usually really love the marriage of convenience trope. She has definitely had better stories. It's still decent, though.

This is a lovely arranged marriage, enemies to lovers fantasy romance complete with a lies, deceptions, a bit of trickery, a kingdom being swallowed by a curse, assassins, and the sweetest couple as they learn to trust each other with their secrets. After the reveals in the ending of this book, I really can't wait until book 2!

A beautifully immersive book filled with twists and turns!

I love Camille Peters's writing style. Every sentence feels like an artistically designed masterpiece, and I found myself re-reading chunks just to experience how beautifully the words flowed and danced together on the page.

The premise of this book fascinated me--a girl raised as a princess to be a decoy??? So genius, and I really felt the weight of her fake parents' betrayal, right into my very soul! I admired Evelyn's loyalty to the people she was never meant to rule, so strong that it drove her to marry a man she disliked simply to protect them, and open herself up to being betrayed AGAIN... just wow.

Next, Ryland. I LOVED Rylan's point of view in this book; I do adore dual POV, and I loved the internal struggles he had, because he had very credible reasons for his actions. (Trying not to give any spoilers here, but trust me, the last 1/4 to 1/3 of the book had me on the edge of my seat!) He was so sweet and caring, but also so doggone tempted by magic... and Evelyn... *swoon*

Also, the twists and turns! I was so happy with how they all turned out, even though there were times I wanted to throw down the book in despair because I was sure there was no possible way to salvage the kingdom, the relationship, or any of it! Especially after the monastery.

Finally, I'm already DYING to read Decoy!!! The teaser scene featuring the next couple already has me squealing with excitement, and I need the next two weeks to disappear so I can read it already!!!! I'm already prepared for it to be my NEXT favorite Camille Peters book! (is there a limit on how many we can have? answer: no, never)

Such a beautiful masterpiece of a book, and I am READY for the next one in this series! Highly, highly recommend!

I love a good fairytale story from this author and have been swept up in the previous series she's written. Facade starts off a new series that I'm looking forward to enjoying. This first book was great.

I liked how the author developed the characters of Evelyn and Ryland. They both have something they treasure and care about but they are having struggles finding how to protect it and help. Princess Evelyn has just found out that she's just a decoy and is cast out from the castle and stripped of her title and family. Yet her love for her kingdom and people she's served is strong that when she discovers a plot, she decides royal or not, she's going to step up and thwart it!

Convincing Prince Ryland, the betrothed of the real Princess Evelyn, to marry her right away turns out easier than she thought it would be. But they both have secrets and a bit of a facade going on. I loved seeing their inner turmoil and struggle with not being completely honest with each other but for the sake of their kingdoms they're trying to save, they hold on to their facades and secrets.

Yes, the secrets come out. And yes there are complications in this marriage of convenience they have both entered into. Even when trying to get out of their marriage, the plot twists and turns keep Evelyn and Ryland on their toes.

I loved the themes of hope and learning to be true and honest throughout the book. The sweet love story was the thread that wove everything together and found a way to soften hearts and bring understanding. I found myself laughing at the banter and smiling and sighing at the friendship building to love with these two!

Content: Clean. Some kisses but nothing further.

I received a copy from the author. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

Likes:
-good banter
-great hero and heroine
-good story building
-some tummy butterflies
-I smiled and chuckled
-loved the segway into the next book. So good.

Dislikes:
-Way. Too. Wordy. I normally don’t give books like this 4 ⭐️, but the story and characters really made me like it despite the fact that there were pages of descriptions. I know that style of writing is some people’s preferred read. I prefer way more talking/interacting and some inner dialogue/description.

Over-all creative and so good. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reader’s Notes:

– this is part of a series and can be read as a stand-alone, though there are a few (smallish) loose ends that will be followed in other books (which will have different main characters than this one)

– this is told from Evelyn & Ryland’s point of view

– there is some fantasy violence/killing/death

Review:

Forewarning, this book will likely have you close to/in tears right from the first chapter! It was so good! I loved that we were right in the middle of everything and that we got to know both of our main characters from each other as well as themselves. I loved Evelyn’s loyalty to her kingdom and the sass she willingly dropped on her husband. I loved that Ryland was trying to save his kingdom and was imperfect enough to be tempted by the power that could save them. I also loved the little moments where Ryland learned something new ye real about his wife and how these things amused him and made him eventually truly fall for her. Some of my favorite scenes/moments in this book included: an only one bed situation, their garden meetings, when Ryland caught Evelyn in some place she shouldn’t have been, their banter, their time by the creek/river, and when Ryland proves that he loves Evelyn and not the power he was originally after.

Summary:

Evelyn is a princess who strives to do her kingdom proud despite her many setbacks. Until one day, she discovers that she isn’t who she’s always thought she was. Evelyn was merely a decoy brought in to protect the true princess from harm that has now passed, meaning the royal family no longer has need for her. Now Evelyn is drifting without the purpose her life once had and is having difficulty finding her own place in this new world. But when she hears a rumor that the man the true princess is betrothed to is going to exploit their marriage to take their kingdom’s magic, Evelyn gathers her resolve and courage to do what’s right. She will protect her kingdom at any cost, even when that means shackling herself to the princess’s betrothed in matrimony under the guise that she is the true princess so that he can’t marry the true princess and thus can’t access their kingdom’s magic.

Prince Ryland is surprised by his betrothed showing up at his family’s castle unannounced, but is quick to act when she mentions that her parents are thinking of dropping their betrothal in favor of another kingdom. Hastily, he and Evelyn marry in order to stop these plans that could spell disaster for his kingdom. Yes, Ryland’s reasons for choosing to marry Evelyn aren’t quite filled with honor in manner, but his heart is in the right place. By being married to Evelyn, he could gain access to her kingdom’s magic and cure the issues his kingdom is facing. What Ryland didn’t expect is that the woman claiming to be his betrothed is nothing but a decoy. Even more shocking is that when her identity is revealed, Evelyn drops her demure manners and starts acting like the person she actually is. Someone so utterly different from the women Ryland has come to expect at court. Someone that Ryland has a hard time keeping his own mask in check around…

Confession - I started reading this solely because it was a Camille Peters book, without reading the description, and spent the first couple of chapters confused, trying to place the characters to the familiar family trees from the Kingdom Chronicles series. When I finally pulled up the book on Goodreads, I realized my mistake.

IU hiding behind a box

This is a completely new series. But, that just goes to show how similar this book's vibe is to the Enchanted Kingdoms series, so if you liked that series, you're sure to like this one. The main difference is that while this has a fairy tale fantasy vibe, it isn't a retelling.

I liked the new kingdoms and characters introduced in this first book. The overall world felt familiar and similar enough to Kingdom Chronicles that I wouldn't be surprised if we had a cameo or crossover character at some point.

This does look like it will be a several book series. There was one major plot point that I thought was going to be resolved that was just passed off to another character towards the end, and I'm interested to see how the story and conflict develops.

Some of Ryland's actions towards the end just toe the line of going too far of what I'm willing to forgive a character for. The resolution wrapped up a tad too quickly for my tastes, but I still think it was handled in a mostly mature and non-toxic way, which I appreciated.

The teasers at the end for Decoy have me very excited!

Okay let me be totally honest. She was not enticing at all. Like cool you thought you weren't a princess but you thought you still had a duty? And then chained yourself to the "Enemy" Like what!?! And besides that you were incredibly boring. And you were like all prim and proper then you became this whole snarky, conniving, rude person towards Ryland! Like okay sure he wanted to steal your magic but still you were like oh I can't act like this when you were a princess but then you could towards a Crown Prince form a different kingdom! say you were a Decoy you could be hang! Anyways didn't like her thought she was like every girl and got that whole "I'm not like other girls" personality. Also what was up with the Tree climbing, like girl if you like tree climbing then who cares if it was 'Unladylike" To me that seem like crap. But... I sorta get why. Women would've been restricted to such a boyish activity.

এ❁꙰᭄ 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘙𝘺𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥
Okay I am not that annoyed with Ryland. But honestly what is up with his name. Like I sorta like it but also don't like everybody had such plain names then you see RYLAND. Like I get it if it was Rhyland. But not just Ryland. Anyways I thought he was cool. I liked him there was a lot of stuff I could relate to him. Like for instance his love for rocks.... Okay I had a minor rock Era. But anyways I admired his duty. But I hated how he was clouded by "His duty" that he thought stealing magic from Evelyn was okay. like even though you didn't know it could've killed her that still is wrong. Also like what was up with the Invisible curse? Like we only heard about it like 4 times and it was like one of the major sub plots! I think it could've been written in more with a lot more detail. But other than that I really liked Ryland I feel like me and him could be buddies.

এ❁꙰᭄ 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸
Okay... So we find out that shadow is actually the one that could kill her. like he is the biggest threat to Evelyn. But apparently he is Duke Luke who is suppose to be in the next book. Okay first of off we find him in the end of the book kid you not literally at the last 10 chapters we actually see him. As if as a teaser for the next book. But honestly it gave away too much information on the next book. But wait he and Blair have this little mojo going on?!?! I am so confuse but so far I like Shadow or Luke.

এ❁꙰᭄ 𝘉𝘭𝘢𝘪𝘳
I like her!!! She was apart of literally the last 5 chapters like a teaser for the next book. But I already know she slays! Like girl. You have a freaking assassin as a friend! you know how sick that is!!!!! Okay don't know why I thought Blair and Shadow gave me such "Belladonna" Vibes. But she seems amazing and like way better than Evelyn. I actually started hating Evelyn when Blair showed up...

Okay so there were some pros to this book! It opened up to the next book which I think will actually be better. Also this is my very first actual series by Camille since the Kingdom Chronicles are like interconnect standalones.

এ❁꙰᭄ 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴
There were many, MANY Cons sadly. I thought this would be such a good book. I had such high expectations. Since I read her other series The Kingdom Chronicles. But honestly it wasn't really good. I know each series in any book has that one "meh" book. And this is the one. I honestly think the next book will be better. Since Blair and Luke seem so cool and their dynamic is cool. But honestly I thought this book was so mess up like just the book finally made sense when I got to 70% into the book. Like honestly I was ready to DNF it. But I was like "NO you can't dnf Camille's book" that was all that was keeping me to reading it. Also they said "Facade" and "Decoy" way to much. like cool you are promoting the book and all. But like there are other words that means Facade and Decoy. Also the plot seemed weak. I thought the plot would've been so good. But I think the writing was why it didn't do well. Anyways hopefully Decoy won't be a disappointment. I have lowered my expectations after reading this book. Lastly when I got to the last 3 chapters I thought they were unnecessary. Like I thought it was just fluff and nothing important.

Thank you for basically reading my rant! Hopefully you have a nice day!! Like and comment!!!!!

What a lovely story! I quite enjoyed my time reading this one! This book had a similar feel to the fairy tales that the author writes but I loved the mystery and action added to this story. Also, I must add that this cover is beautiful! Every single cover for this author's books takes my breath away.

I really liked the characters and their motivations. I liked Evie and her inner strength and perseverance. Sometimes her determination to dislike Ryland was a little bit irritating, but overall I loved going on this journey with her as our protagonist. I also liked Ryland. I went a little back and forth on him because of a particular action towards the last half of the book. However, in the end, I couldn't help but forgive him. He is so sweet and caring and he was the perfect match for Evie.

Even though the romance was sweet, I found myself more curious about how the conflicts in the book would play out. We still didn't get a ton of closure on some of those matters but I'm sure they will be addressed eventually. Speaking of, after the conclusion of this book, I am SO excited for Decoy to come out. Oh my goodness, I cannot wait! Anyway... I highly recommend reading this if you want a clean romance with a little bit of political intrigue!

3.5 stars ⭐️ I enjoyed the first book in this new series by Camille Peters! After reading the synopsis for Facade, I was intrigued and really excited to read it!

I’ve really enjoyed this author’s fairytale retelling books and while this book isn’t based on a fairytale, it does have a similar feel to her fairytale series which I liked! This book had the enemies-to-lovers and marriage to convenience trope so as you can imagine, Evelyn and Ryland’s story was quite the journey!

While I liked both of them, Ryland was my favorite character in this book! He made mistakes but he was also so kind and thoughtful making him a lovable hero.💗
The love story was sweet! I enjoyed their banter and watching them grow closer to each other even as they faced inevitable separation. Their friendship that blossomed into to love made it a really sweet story.

This book is clean but it is marriage of convenience so there is a bit more romance though nothing beyond a few kisses.
While there was more going on in the plot, I did feel like it was mostly focused on the romance. At times I wished there was a little more action happening since this was a pretty long book. Sometimes I felt like the characters were a bit obsessed with each other and noticed each other constantly. That being said, I did enjoy this story and the action did pick up towards the end!

I loved the action and events towards the end that introduced Luke and Blair. I can’t wait to read their story in the next book!

Overall, I enjoyed this book and I’m really excited for book 2 in this series! While there were a few times the story felt slow for me, I did enjoy it.
If you enjoy books with fairytale romance vibes, a marriage of convenience, and the enemies to lovers trope, I think you’ll love this one!

3.5 stars.

I enjoyed this book, the story kept me entertained and the banter kept me laughing. I love Evie and how she found herself and became the princess she was meant to be even with everything that was happening to her. I also really liked Silas.

Also, I know he wasn't the main character in this book and his book isn't out yet, but I just know that I'm going to love luke, I mean he's an assassin. So I can't wait for decoy :)

I did NOT finish this in one day—it took me like a week—I just forgot to add it when I started.

I liked the premise & plot and the ADD heroine. I didn’t connect with the writing style and I had to force myself to finish. I am mildly curious about the rest of the story, but probably won’t read the sequel. The second-to-last chapter’s drama was just … too much for me. The villain didn’t have a mustache, but if he did, he would have twirled it—and not ironically.

This is my first review, and I just wanted to make this because I was so frustrated with this book. So, it might not be the most coherent thing ever, and there are spoilers, so be warned!!!! I have to get this out of my chest. This is really long, by the way...

Basically, this is a 2.5 stars for me.

I really liked the first half, but after that, it slowly went downhill. I don't know if it's a me problem, but the characters became so frustrating near the end. Like, Ryland's kingdom has a curse that makes villages and plants disappear. So, to solve this problem, he needs magic, which Evelyn has. But, Evelyn, this girl, doesn't want to give it because her kingdom needs it, which makes sense... But there are people literally disappearing!!!!!!!!! She even caught the disappearing curse and felt herself disappearing!!!!! Also, she fricking saw Ryland almost disappear!!!!! Like, can't you give your powers freely to him??? At least, tryyy... Try to save those guysss. Unfortunately, that's not what happens, and he stole her powers because he needs it. Like, Evenlyn, what would you do if you have the same problem????? Most likely you'll do the same thing Ryland did since you need itttt, and Ryland will most likely not give it if he has magic powers that his kingdom needs.

Also, I'm so annoyed when YA novels has stuff like my heart shattered to a thousand pieces or I'm incapable of feeling blah blah blah... Like if you really feel betrayed, you'll most likely be angry and not think stuff like that!!!! Honestly, that's just a nitpick for me, so yeahhh, maybe you don't have that problem...

Lastly, her parents made her believe they didn't love her. She was just a decoy, that was her purpose; they didn't feel anything for her. So, like she starts to think she's fricking worthless because she has no family, no home, and now, works as a fricking seamstresss... Like they only gave her a little money... But when she returned to Estoria at the end, literally, she forgave them when she met them. Like they made you feel like you're nothing... How can you forgive them??? It's honestly worse than what Ryland did since he actually gave back her magic after feeling remorse. But her parents, frickkk, they made her feel that way like what the frickkk... Good thing, she didn't get so depressedd and killed herself or something... I mean, this was for her protection, but this is just so cruel... Like if anyone made me feel that way, I honestly wouldn't forgive them for a long time...

So, this is my review... It's really long... Basically, a rant... Thanks for reading it!!!!!!!!!!!

Yet another set of kingdoms with a distinct feel and way of incorporating magic.

One of my favourite aspects of any fantasy series is the world building - and Façade didn't disappoint. This world and story, whilst similar to the worlds of Kingdom Chronicles and Enchanted Kingdom Chronicles, definitely had it's own flavour from the kingdom and relationship dynamics/politics to the way magic works in this world. The sneak peaks of the other kingdoms that were mentioned have me excited to get to explore them in future books.

Evie had a beautiful inner strength, despite having everything she knew, her family, her title, and her life, stripped away from her, she was still determined to serve her kingdom anyway she could. She did have her flaws: her stubbornness and her tendency to be judgemental of others. But this served to make her the perfectly imperfect human she was. I also love her relationship with her parents and how they loved her unconditionally and accepted her completely despite her own perceived shortcomings.

Ryland was definitely an interesting character. He was a good person but desperation can make even the best of people prone to follow a path that causes them to lose themselves along the way, and Ryland was no exception. However, his love for Evie helps him find his way again.

This book more than any other Camille has written so far explores the lack of black and white when it comes to whether the ends justify the means. Evie, Ryland, and their families all make decisions that can be considered as morally wrong when it comes to sacrificing others for their own desired outcome. However, as love blossoms between Evie and Ryland, they come to realise that with an open mind, they can find common ground and actually re-evaluate what's most important to them.

Probably the most pleasant surprise in this book was the introductions of Blair and Luke, they are such interesting and complex characters. Even just the few chapters that they were present made me so excited to get to know them in Decoy, I can't wait.

Overall, Façade was a brilliant introduction to this new world and has set the rest of this series up so nicely. I'm looking forward to seeing what other stories there are to be told in this series.

When I saw that Camille was releasing a new book featuring some of my favorite tropes, I got really excited. Needless to say, once again she has blown my expectations away with yet another story that touched my heart.

As an autistic ADHDer, I get really excited whenever I read characters with neurodivergent traits. Between Ryland’s special interest in rocks and Evelyn’s short attention span, constant fidgeting, and her tendency to flit from hyperfixation to hyperfixation, these characters have to be neurodivergent. Not a chapter went by without at least one relatable moment, making me feel seen in a way few books have.

I especially liked how this book focused a lot on masking and the toll it takes. Evelyn’s struggles with maintaining composure, to resist sitting unladylike, forcing herself to wear uncomfortable shoes, and her constantly wandering thoughts all hit close to home. Never before have I come across a female character so relatable (it’s almost always male).

Aside from how much I love and relate to the characters, this book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. Camille definitely knows how to take her readers on an emotional rollercoaster, and I was no exception. Despite knowing that there would be a HEA, I worried a lot about Evelyn and Ryland’s relationship and if everything could truly be okay between them. But there were happy parts too, and I enjoyed watching as Evelyn and Ryland slowly open up to each other and unmask. My particular favorite scene is when Ryland reveals his special interest in rocks and the two of them end up in a water fight after searching for rocks together.

All in all, this was a phenomenal book by Camille Peters and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys high fantasy with a fairy tale feel (though not actually a retelling).

Once again Camille Peters has created a world to steal my heart. This is my favorite book she has released so far. I was, quite literally, unable to put this book down! Camille Peters has a magical way with words and creates the most beautiful imagery. Something else I enjoyed was how we were able to read from both Evelyn and Ryland’s perspective. It allowed the story to feel more rounded and gave both characters more depth.

Evelyn is such an amazing heroine! Even when she had lost everything, her love and dedication for her people never wavered. I admired how she continues to love her family, even after being told that she was only a decoy. However, what I appreciated even more was how she still allowed herself to feel hurt by her parents' betrayal. She demonstrates the importance of being able to forgive while acknowledging that true healing takes time.

Switching gears now, I fell in love with Ryland immediately! His focus is always on ensuring the safety of those around him. There are moments when Ryland catches Evelyn in the midst of suspicious behavior but rather than jumping into questioning her, he focuses on her well-being and safety before moving onto his own suspicions. He and Evelyn were such a perfect pair and with every witty interaction I fell in love with them more.

Façade is an addictingly luscious book filled with a beautiful spin on some of the best tropes. (Enemies-to-lovers, a marriage of convenience, with well developed and rounded characters! It truly is a fairytale!) I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to learn more about Blair in the next book, Decoy.

3.5 starsSo I have to admit that this took me a little longer to get into but I did end up enjoying this book. Facade is the first book in Camille Peters’s new series, The Royal Chronicles.
Evelyn was an interesting character. She was just trying her best to be a good princess and be a royal that cared for her people. It took a while for me to understand Evelyn but I grew to like her as the book went on. She was struggling to find her place and find confidence in who she was. I love how she grew throughout the book and who she grew confident in her abilities and the things that made her unique.
I liked Ryland. I felt so bad for him as he tried to do the right thing while doing his duty to his kingdom. He was struggling to figure out what balance between good and necessary evils. It was interesting to read about Ryland grow and to see him fall for Evelyn. She took him by surprise but she also helped him be better.
Ryland and Evelyn had many things that stood in the way of their future together and their kingdom’s future. It was intriguing to see how the story would end and how Ryland and Evelyn would end up together. Peters wove many things together in this book and it really set up for the next books. I do think that the set up made it a bit harder for me to read but it is necessary for the other books. I am excited to see what the next books will hold. Facade is a clean fantasy romance.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.

Only those with royal blood can possess magic. WE GET IT!!! This sentence or iteration of these words are repeated so often in the 1st half of the book that it pretty much gives away that she is a royal, not a decoy. I just saw I'm a little over half thru and I'm appalled. This is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo dragged out. Insta love even tho she thinks he's literally trying to destroy her kingdom and steal her magic? She's unique cuz she likes to take her shoes off? This is a bad story in general. The MFC is a complete idiot. The MMC is pathetic. He likes rocks. Wow. Fascinating. He must have depth if he can collect rocks. This is the most drawn out story I've read lately and I'm not even done it. Why is this taking so long? Or is it not long, just repetitive and dull? R.O.C.K.S. Seriously. That's the princes awesome hidden personality, dumb as a box of rocks too. Of dumb as a cloak pocket full of rocks. So many assassins are after this girl, none are successful, yet it was a good idea to toss her out of a heavily guarded fortress of a castle and let her live in the city in a 1 room hovel? That's brilliant. And her, with barely any money, manages to make it to a different kingdom with like 1 gown nad is just accepted when she shows up in a random carriage? Not a royal carriage, not surrounded by guards, not with luggage, no maids, nothing. But bring her in and marry her? GTFOH. This is a snooze 😴😴💤🥱 and just so unnecessarily BORING

Good base story

This story had a good base, but I felt like it needed more editing or flushing out.
The opening with the king and queen was not believable and was confusing, but not in a good way. It didn't leave a hint of mystery. It just seemed off. Everything in their actions and words showed that they really loved her, so sending her to the slums doesn't make sense. Send her somewhere obscure where she won't be recognized, but with enough money to be taken care of well. Have her learn a trade, but don't put just drop kick her. It just wasn't believable.
Also, the princess uses magic the whole time, yet doesn't realize it? It was obvious. It either needed to come all at once, or it needed to be written that she had a pathetic amount of magic, and that was why others thought less of her. To have magic but act as if she didn't realize she did just didn't fit.
Also, the final fight between the main characters wasn't believable. It was an accident on his part, and she lied to him twice. The bond was built up so crazy high, but the choice they made seemed like it was nothing. There were other choices, but they decided to do the absolute worst one.....which lasted 3 days?
*This book is rated PG. There is no cussing, violence, or spice. There are a few mild kisses.

Like all Camille’s book, this one was yet another good story.

It’s really fascinating how she writes electric banter in almost all books yet they’re not repetitive or boring, but always leave you wanting more. That was the case here as well, Evie and Ryland really clicked and I loved their dynamic.

Evie’s ADHD was so relatable and I truly felt for her, how she struggled and overcomes her insecurities because of it. While her distractions aren’t going to go away, her confidence built was beautiful and how Ryland accepted her and never made her feel any less was swoon worthy. I also loved Ryland love for rocks and how Evie supported and encouraged that. Their chemistry was definitely one of the best.

Safe to say, it’s a great start to the series, and I feel that this and the next book, Decoy are really just the start to a bigger plot and stories of this mysterious new world Camille introduced us too. Honestly I didn’t really necessarily like Blair or Luke, but they seem interesting enough that I’m waiting for their story in Decoy. Hopefully they’ll end up being just as good as Evie and Ryland.

Ryland’s brother, Lucian now I’m curious about. It seems his will be the third book in the series. Let’s see!

Camille Peters has the best, magical story ideas! I love that we’re venturing into a different world with fresh characters in this new series. This first installment has so many fun romance-fantasy tropes: prophecies, false identities, marriage of convenience, fake “dating”, journeys, assassins, rocks! The details Camille weaves into her characters makes them all realistic and like friends. The barefoot scenes?! THE ROCKS.

The book can be divided into three acts, all with unique settings in the kingdoms and new challenges. I wish there were some more characters for Evelyn and Ryland to talk to for mentorship. It’s basically just them for the first two thirds of the book. Plenty of good conversations and fun dialogue, but I would’ve enjoyed some more side characters to help break up the two-person-show. Especially because Camille does lovable side characters or quirky pet companions so well! I was SO intrigued with the twist between the second and third act. I knew something had to happen, but what Camille came up with was so encapsulating.

I’m forever a fan of Camille. She creates magical places and plots with characters one roots for. I’m invested in this series and cart wait to return to Estoria for shenanigans alluded to in the last few chapters. :D

I really loved the central concept explored in this book, because so many times we feel forced to betray our true selves in order to live up to the demands of society. We hide our true feelings and behaviours and become an actor in a made-up play, our performance only done in service of the cold and uncaring audience that demands it. We live a lie to keep the peace or to fill some expected duty that circumstances have thrust upon us. But do these things make us happy? No, they make us slaves.

Both Evelyn and Ryland are entangled in the roles they have been placed in, though they gradually learn to break free and become their true selves. This is something that felt so right with me, the hope to overcome the prison we are placed in — by religion, politics, or even biology — into a better world, one of our own making. In the process finding love of self and love of life… and in their case, love of someone else. It was inspiring, and I am happy for them and their future. I also can't wait for book 2; it looks to be even better!

5/5 stars

A facade that forms the foundation of the book. Such an intriguing concept hooked me from the beginning. I liked Evelyn and her journey a lot. She struggled to find herself and her identity, but not in a way that made her an annoying or repetitive character. I think she has some ADHD tendencies based on her descriptions, and I think that having a princess that is real instead of perfect is a nice change. Evelyn goes through so much but believably makes choices both good and bad. Rhylan is an interesting man. He seems to perfect to be real despite his flaws, but nonetheless, he’s a great character to follow. He balances out Evelyn well.

The plot follows conventional fairy tale elements but remains unique and interesting since it’s original instead of a retelling. The pacing is very good. The language starts a bit archaic for me, but later it felt natural in the book’s setting. I find myself looking forward to seeing what happens in the next book Decoy!

*I received an ARC with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own.*

This is probably my favorite story Ms. Peters has ever written, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it! I loved the adventure, the mysteries, the journeys the characters traverse, and (especially and best of all) the relationship between the two protagonists. Evelyn and Ryland are such an incredibly fun and dynamic couple! I really enjoyed watching both of their characters grow in trust and affection, and they each help to highlight the positive traits in the other. Their banter and steady development into trust and care was perfectly paced and absolutely rewarding to read—they feel both believeable and realistic, and I was cheering for both of them to conquer what seemed like insurmountable challenges right from the very beginning. This story has exciting twists I wasn't expecting, and it became very difficult to put my kindle down! It has plenty of moments of humor and wit (I might have annoyed my friends from all my laughter!), and the various surprises are really rewarding. What an awesome story, and what a fantastic start to a new series!

I really enjoyed reading about Evelyn and Ryland's journey. When the King and Queen told Evelyn that she was a decoy and that she was only meant to be a stand-in for their real daughter until the peril prophesied passed, my heart broke for her. Everything that she had ever known and loved was ripped from her. Then, when she discovered that there was a threat against her home by the person (Ryland) that she was previously betrothed to, thinking that she was a decoy, she left her home country immediately to try to prevent the threat to her home, her people, her family. As she and Ryland learned about each other and grew to care for each other outside of the roles that they represented in their individual minds, it was apparent that their relationship would be one that would grow strong and well.

When Ryland betrayed Evelyn, my heart broke for her again.

But when Ryland proposed for a *real* and *honest* marriage after their annulment, with a contract that would prevent him from taking any of her magic, my heart rejoiced for them.

I really enjoyed this story! The no spice romance was sweet and fun, and the banter between the FMC and MMC was fantastic! I loved that the FMC was not your average princess and a little quirky, slouching in chairs, despising shoes and the like. So many little moments where I thought, "Girl, same!".

I was really intrigued just from the first couple of chapters, but the pace was a little slower than I'm used to. Which is not a bad thing! It's not super action-packed, but the pace fits well with the story and the characters. After reading a lot of action-packed stories lately, it was nice to read something different.

What really made this story beautiful was the descriptions! Everything, from the landscape and scenery to the characters' appearances and emotions, was so detailed it almost felt tangible, like a painting was being made in my mind with each page! I could easily imagine each scene, what the rooms/places looked like, and what the characters were doing.

I'm excited to read more of this author's work!

I absolutely adored this story! The enemies to lovers marriage of convenience was so much fun. Evelyn was such an admirable heroine, whereas Ryland was such a cinnamon roll.

I adored watching as they fall deeper in love as their facades are gradually stripped away and they discover one another for who they truly are and are able to build something real from a marriage that began with a facade into something real. Their growth was very satisfying and their relationship was utterly adorable. I loved seeing them together.

In addition, the plot thoroughly engaged me and kept me wondering what was going to happen and how on earth our cute couple was going to find a way to be together. I loved the message of not only being true to oneself, but in overcoming past mistakes and redemption. Love truly conquers all. The beautiful themes really enhanced the sweet, adorable romance and enjoyable story.

This is definitely my new favorite by Camille Peters. Highly recommend.

(I was given an advanced reader copy of this book for my review. All opinions are strictly my own)

Facade might be one of my new favorites of Camille Peter's work. The plot was amazing, which only enriched the overall story of the romance.

This story begins with Evelyn, who discovers that she is a decoy princess, put in the real princess's place to protect her life. Devastated by this discovery, Evelyn is determined to hold on to some semblance of meaning in her life. Upon discovering a plot that threatens her kingdom, Evelyn makes the difficult decision to put herself in the line of fire by marrying a foreign princ, who is unaware that she is not the true princess.

This book was just amazing, and so many of the little twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat.

Evelyn was such a good character, and I loved her arc across the book and Ryland's as well. They are both so near to my heart and I can't wait to read more in this series!

Definitely recommend!
