Sometimes true love starts as a lie.

Introducing Ezra Darling and Teddy Montgomery: millennials from two of the world’s biggest Reality TV families who are contractually obligated to play nice when a scandalous collaboration between networks sees Teddy marrying Ezra’s sister.

From enemies, to tentative friends, Ezra and Teddy are forced to play nice in front of the cameras, leading to something more behind the scenes.

As the season finale approaches, Ezra realises, with utter dismay, that he is falling for his sister’s fiancé, and Teddy is doing absolutely nothing to stop it.

F**k.

Laura Jordan

Laura Jordan is a 6ft Libran and cat enthusiast from the countryside in Kent, England. She grew up in her family cottage with her parents, brother and grandad Len. She studied ballet and performing arts for the majority of her adolescent life, thinking she would make a career of it, before realising she could neither sing, act, nor dance.

Sensing her talents may lie elsewhere, Laura set off to study creative writing at the University of Greenwich where she scraped a bachelor’s degree. Laura then went on to put her degree to good use as a senior reporter and editor for a builder’s merchant’s magazine. However, she was fired after three months after likening her workplace to “riding a bike through Hell” on Twitter.

Then Laura tried her hand at teaching. She became a Special Educational Needs teaching assistant for secondary school children, and much to everyone’s surprise —not least her own— she found she was quite good at it. She kept to this line of work for three years until moving to Ireland to be with her boyfriend.

Living in Dublin with Derek, their golden retriever, and a small army of borderline feral cats, Laura spends her time co-hosting a podcast and writing books that she is still astounded that people want to read.

She is also very fond of pizza.

I'm annoyed with myself for finishing this, but the thing is ... It's not a terrible book. The writing is pretty good. At 379 pages it's too long by at least 100 pages, but the structure is fine and the characters are fine* and the sex scenes are fine and sometimes even hot. LOTS of Making Love, if that's your thing.

But ok, there are some problems. First of all, it's such a blatant rip-off of Red White & Royal Blue (but with a lot more sex) I kind of can't believe any decent author would have the gall to release it. Isn't she embarrassed? The characters are barely-disguised copies, and the plot follows RW&RB nearly scene for scene. Like, some of the lines are nearly word for word.

RW&RB:
Their hardass but secretly heart of gold PR woman: ", but the minute you see a camera, you act like the sun shines out of his dick, and you make it convincing.”

Our Little Secret:
Their hardass but secretly heart of gold PR woman: "I want you acting like the sun shines out of his goddamn asshole, because as far as you’re concerned, it does."

RW&RB
Beautiful blonde British man stalks out of a fancy party and tries to come out to charming life of the party American, after which he kisses him. 'Christ, you are as thick as it gets,' he says"

Our Little Secret:
Beautiful blonde British man stalks out of a fancy party and tries to come out to charming life of the party American, after which he kisses him. "Teddy blinks. ‘Oh, good God. You really are this thick, aren’t you?’"

Etc etc.

*I could probably have forgiven the book for all those things. Romance is usually formulaic, that's part of what we love about it. What I can't forgive is the whole premise of the book. What kind of amoral, supposedly gay-rights-supporting family, agrees to a TV deal TO HELP COVER UP A CRIME AGAINST QUEER CHILDREN. And we are supposed to like Grace? It's pretty clear we are supposed to like Grace. And their family. And of course we're supposed to root for Alex.

I dunno. I rarely bother to rate and review books that are 2 stars, but I just had to point out that that whole thing is f*cked up.

I really wanted to like this book, and it wasn't bad, but I enjoyed it much more in its original version: Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. I mean I get wanting to write an homage to your favorite book, but from the present tense writing, to the sassy sister and best female friend, to the foul-mouthed-but-secretly-a-marshmallow female guardian figure, this is just too much. Ezra is a less intelligent and focused Alex, and Teddy is a whinier Henry without the royal connection. The conflict that worked in a political setting is not nearly as high stakes in a reality TV situation. Sorry to be so critical because the author is not untalented, but I would just re-read the source material instead.

I don’t even know where to start with this review because there is just so much that I loved. The characters were wonderful, the plot was deeply enticing, the writing itself was brilliant, I just cannot praise every aspect nearly enough. This book was funny and emotional and sexy and like both of Laura’s previous books I couldn’t put it down, and finished it in a day. This book is a gorgeous homage to books like Red, White and Royal Blue and holds up so strongly in its own right. There is so much heart in this book that I can’t even think straight (neither could Teddy or Ezra…)
Each of the characters held there own right in a truly enticing way. Ezra is complete chaos and is the kind of guy that you can’t help but love and yet you wonder how on earth he’s managed to get so far in life without anybody throttling him. I love him, but he stressed me out. Teddy is lovely and wonderful and has been through so much that you can’t help but agree with the mantra ‘protect Teddy’. Ali is a wonderful force of a woman and somebody I would feel so grateful to have in my corner in real life. Grace is equally a force to be reckoned with and deserves so much in life. Iris was everything, the chaos, the commissions, just everything about her was wonderful, Daria equally beyond wonderful. Without spoilers there were two characters I HATED, truly hated (a sign of excellent writing that I felt so strongly about how terrible they were).

I will think about Ezra every single day from now on, I immediately connected with him intensely and I honestly believe he’s become a part of me.

This is probably the longest review I’ve ever written but this book deserves nothing but praise. Laura is a wonderful author and this is immediately my favourite of her three books.

I’ve just finished this book and at this moment I so want to read more. I cannot put into words how much of this story that I loved. The relation between Ezra and Teddy just made me melt and how much they needed each other and the unconditional love that they had between them, Ali was a force of her own and I loved her for it, I think I am in love with Iris and Daria, it made me laugh out loud at times (there is only one other series that can make me do that), also my heart went out a number of times (especially one scene with Ezra - just felt so much emotion behind it) and there were so many plot lines that just hit me that I didn’t see coming even up until the last page. Finally I loved the friendships portrayed - to have a solid group of friends like that, I can’t put into words.

Teddy’s press conference speech at the end - WOW

This is the first of Laura’s novels that I have read and I look forward to any future books as well as adding her current ones to my ever increasing TBR pile. I loved it.

Our Little Secret is the best love story I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. The comedy is unmatched, the characters are so beautifully and a carefully created to have the best chemistry I think I’ve seen in long time. The story had me on an emotional rollercoaster since the first chapter. I laughed, I blushed, I probably cried but I’m too cool to admit that.

It is the Epic Gay Love story of the ages.

Was this an epic gay love story? No, but it was to Laura, and it very much felt like Laura, and I was here for it. Loved the journey for the most part. I wanted a bit more drive and direction to the plot, maybe a bit more action to be had within the reality TV show they were supposed to be a part of, but overall it was just sickly sweet and I was on Team Tezra from the start. Am I crying? No you're crying.
Genuinely didn't know where the story was going at any given moment, every twist had me on the edge of my seat, every sassy comment and comeback had me laughing wholeheartedly, every sweet and loving moment between Ezra and Teddy had my little heart gushing and swooning along with them. A lot of the undercurrent and behind the drama topics were about as impactful as they needed to be, although I wanted a bit more in-depth aftermath and bigger comeuppances for the utter villains, but there was a lot going on within in the story and it was covered and ticked off by the end, still managing to be cute and happy at the end, and my god what an ending.
Wish I hadn't been slumping right after starting this because I could've devoured this in one sitting, I really enjoyed the ride and am looking forward to the next book I dive into. I quite enjoy her writing style, let's see which genre is next.

Vague spoilers in the second half of the review.

I just finished it in under a day because „Our little secret“ just kept me reading and smiling at my screen. The tropes are quite similar to RWaRB but I personally enjoyed the similarities and the differences a lot.
People who don’t like graphic scenes will probably not like this book, but everyone else will find a super cute love story that definitely is a new comfort read for me.
The writing style is funny with the right dash of taking itself not too serious and made me snort-laugh rather unbecomingly a few times.
The only thing I have to say, even though I enjoyed every last bit of it, is the book seemed like it had a lot of plot lines that needed a while to be wrapped up at the end, so the part after the „grand finale“ is quite long.

I absolutely loved this book. The characters are brilliantly written and I don't think I've ever read a book where so many of the main characters are so loveable!
There are beautiful moments, heartbreaking moments and joyous moments, all which will have you rooting for many characters throughout, not just the protagonists.
LGBTQ+ representation is so important these days and I love and am proud of Laura's focus and passion towards it, especially in this book.
I can't recommend 'Our Little Secret' enough!

Our Little Secret was such a lovely story! I’m really surprised by the negative reviews. Laura Jordan is a fantastic writer, and Ezra and Teddy are such nuanced characters. It’s impossible not to love both of them. It’s hilarious at times, seriously sexy, and has its moments of heartbreak and frustration. The ending made me swoon. I hope Jordan continues to write thoughtful M/M romances full of humor and heart.

DNF 5% - I assumed the comparisons to Red White & Royal Blue were exaggerating, but holy crap.
