Just finished rereading all 14 of Bernie Gunther novels. I originally read them as they came out all these years ago. I must admit I had expected to relish them as I had the first time round but was surprised by the amount of sex that was in them and that somehow left me feeling a bit disappointed. Must be my age (75)! Anyway it just blunted their edge a bit hence the 4 stars. Thanks Philip wherever you are, either up there with St Peter or down there maybe with Bernie.
Historical novels usually leave me cold but the blending of real people and happenings really adds to the story, especially at the end of each book which repeats the actual history of the events. I am going to have trouble finding new stuff to read that matches this
Extremely well written. Tense, thoughtful and exciting. Totally convincing historical detail baked by sound research. A great way to learn about a weird and dark part of German history,
After finishing the complete Bernie Gunther books i have no idea what to follow it up with. Just fantastic and thoroughly researched books. What a loss Philip Kerr is.
