A new series from A.A. Albright, filled with magic, mystery and romance …
Until the day she found the body, Essie’s life was average. But ever since then, things have been very, very strange.
Essie’s neighbours, and even her uncle, seem to be lying to her about Jolene Bly’s death. In fact, they seem to be lying to her about a whole host of things. Her neighbours have some interesting quirks, quirks which include an incredible sense of smell, and keeping unusual hours. And now, after beginning a new job, it seems her colleagues are keeping some secrets, too.
One of those colleagues is the handsome Julian Trent, and something momentous happens between when Essie and Julian touch, time stands still.
Part of Essie thinks she should stay away from Julian – she doesn’t even know what she is, let alone what Julian might be. But when a work trip to Las Vegas brings them closer than ever, it’s a little too late for second thoughts. Essie must get to grips with her newfound magic, discover who’s killing her neighbours, and solve the secrets all around.
But there’s something else that Essie needs to figure out – has she just married a warlock?
A.A. Albright lives in the Irish countryside with her husband.
She loves reading in every genre, but writing cozy mysteries is just about the most fun she's had in a decade.

Devoted fans of A.A. Albright and new fans alike will find a lot of enjoyment in this book.
If you have yet to start reading Albright’s books, this is actually a pretty great place to start. You will miss out on knowing a few cameos but you’re learning about the world right alongside Essie, so it’s a great way to get yourself into the mind of this brilliant author.
This book is a good introduction to what I can tell is going to be a fantastic series. With all of those twists and turns I’m so excited to see what will happen next!
Thanks to A. A. Albright for an ARC of this book, the first in a new series of the magical worlds of A. A. Albright's imagination. This book shows that the new series can be read as a standalone but there are characters from the other series too, the overlap reminding me of other delightful characters I've 'met' in the past such as Finn and Gretel. The narrative includes this author's trademark wit and dry humour, and extremely clever magical concepts which are described so well that the reader can easily understand how things are done. For the new reader there is a very helpful section of 'The compendium of Supernatural beings' reproduced at the end of the book with explanations of particular traits of each character type. This story is every bit as good as the others, and I loved the nod to the classic novel 'Rebecca'. Of course, there is romance as well as magic, albeit that the course of true love never runs smoothly. I look forward to reading more about Essie and her particular type of magic as the series progresses!
Perfect for the girls who have a “broke picker” and always choose the bad boys hiding behind hot facade. Albright is a surprise find and a superb writer.
Essie as the heroine is more of an antiheroine since she does her best to stay in the background and hide from attention. She a sweet personality and precious to her uncle Rick and adopted family who protect Essie after her parent’s suspicious death. After an unexpected death of one their protective circle , the situation spirals out of control, with Essie being hunted for magic and everyone she loves at risk. Real surprises for the ending which are a delight, make the story even more enjoyable.
Yay! An author who is a real witch… or does her research! A witch is male or female. A warlock is a bad witch, an oath breaker and is banished from coven of good witches. Not a male witch. Stop relying on Bewitched people! Lol! I loved this book and cannot wait to read more about Essie and about her learning to use her powers. The extra at the end of the book describing the different types of supernaturals and how their powers are rated, very awesome.
Essie never thought she had magic. Strange things that she can't figure out keep happening around her. She remembers her mother's warning that men were coming for her. Her Uncle and friends are there to help her. A crescendo of danger arises near the end that elicits a feeling of fear for the main character. I like the action, humor, mystery, and romance. I look forward to the next book.
I have read the series dealing with Samhain Street, Riddler's Edge and Riddler's Cove and never thought that the characters from those series would turn up in this book. What a wonderful surprise. As with the other series, this one is written well, lots of twist, clean, touch of romance, and laugh out loud moments. I am looking forward to reading more in this series.
It was OK, but not my favorite book of A.A. Albright’s writing. Getting ready to read number two. Normally, I love all bright writing style as she has an excellent imagination, but this book is far from my favorite. I'm hoping for better for the next one in the series.
This is a new series from A.A. Albright. Here's what you can expect : Witches, werewolves, vampires and secrets... Truth, lies, friends and foes... With a side of murder of course. I just wish that book number two would be out already 😉
Excellent new series can not wait to read more. It was so worth the wait! Now I can't wait for the next one. What do you do when everything in your world is changing go for an interview try to broaden your horizons or change your life forever. Please read so talented the pages leap off the page.
I’m not really sure how I feel about this book. I do know that it was kind of confusing. The girl was kind of different. Let’s put it that way. I read the book there’s a lot going on a lot of chapters, but it is what it is.
This book is a great start to a new series by A A Albright. What a story. I love that Grettle and Fin show up in this series. I can't wait for the next book.
A promising start to a new series with a few familiar characters making brief appearances. Witchy mayhem, weredogs, werewolves, vampires and warlocks - time manipulation & murderous deeds - with gentle humour throughout. Looking forward to the next book.
I put this into the Cosy Mystery tags, but it's far from cosy, but very much the mystery. An enjoyable read that keeps pulling you along. Roll on the next in the series.
