It's time to settle down, get into the swing of her eternal life. No more life or death-death situations. No more almost kidnappings. No more drama.
She's going to reopen the Immortal Cupcake and become a boring member of Dark River for real.
Except she can't bake. And there's an ancient vampire leaving her heads and other undesirable body parts on her front step. And don't forget the ancient dragon shifter king who seems convinced that the great love of her life is one of his progeny.
When I was nine, my grandmother and her friends used to read and swap Harlequin Mills and Boons novels. When I was busted reading one, they started sneaking me boxes full of strong heroines and rugged men. Thus started a long love affair with the romance genre. Then I discovered urban fantasy, and fell in love with broody Alphas and sexy paranormals, and combining them together was a no brainer. Then I discovered Reverse Harem.... Oh my. Why choose, am I right?
I was wondering, what will happen in the third book, as Raine has found most of her harem, and the Angeline situation is solved. She is the owner of immortal cupcake. But the author found a nice turn, to keep the story interesting. Of course all through the book Raine gets from one problem into another and they are all life threatening. In this book she seems to be accepted in Niso as the Alpha Mate. But she is only shorty there, so no one knows. Also the first step to Eden Academy is laid, because we meet Layla and her two boyfriends, who would like to move Eden Academy from Boston to Canada near to Niso and Dark River. I enjoyed the book very much.
The Characters: Names and descriptions of the persons
4 stars. Well. That was a shit ending. I’ll write the rest of my review later. I need a second to process, I think.
Ok. So it’s been a few hours. I’ve read a whole other book. I think I’m ready to express why I found this so dissatisfying.
Let’s start with the ending. It just didn’t feel like an ending. And I understand that’s because there’s another series connected to this, but I hate that. I much prefer for the author to fully end one series before starting another. You can still have them be interconnected without just fully copping out of writing an actual ending for the first one.
Then the fact that this was single POV. It would’ve been fine I think(still not something I fully enjoy, but fine) if their relationships weren’t so rocky and all over the place.
And that brings me to one of the biggest things that I had a problem with, with this series. The relationships were all so different and in such different stages that nothing felt resolved or fully finished at the end. Luscious was still crazy and not fully IN. X was only partway there. The relationships between the guys were all just budding and unresolved. Just, nothing felt complete or fully connected. It all felt precarious and like one wrong move could set them all back to the beginning at any second.
And I just didn’t enjoy that feeling of uncertainty.
Plus the sex. It was hot. It had its good moments. But I was really hoping for more from it than I got with 7 guys in the harem.
I guess I should’ve known since I felt a similar dissatisfaction from the other book I read from this author. I just didn’t connect the dots to them being from the same one until after I had already finished this series. I think I learned my lesson now though. I just don’t vibe with how this author writes.
Downgraded to 3-stars from 4-stars. We find out how the young 19-year-old vampire FMC Raine managed to attract so many ancient powerful vampires to her harem, but I still felt that it was very hand-wavy without much substance. There was an attempt to create angst by showing Raine giving the men a chance break away from her in full disclosure, but they gave pretty weak reasoning to show why they were still attracted to her rather than probably the multitudes of other powerful vampires out there in the world.
Tex still had inconsistent blindness, which irritated me. If a character is supposed to be blind, please have them act appropriately and not like the sighted.
Well, that was cute. I actually almost barged at that one alley scene. You'll know when you read it. Warning, I could taste the chunks... Cringe. Anyway, off to the last book.
I had to re-read the first two books in this series because I forgot the details (it felt like I read them 100 years ago— it was just February 🤦🏻♀️). Anyway, I’m not sorry about that at ALL. I spent the last two days back in Dark River with Raine and her guys and loved every minute of it. Lucius and Nico... holy shit.
To be honestly nothing actually happens and it’s more about their life and how everythingggg finds Raine, keeping the men on their toes and it’s hilarious. This whole book had me laughing with the quick wit between the 7 of them but also how all the other characters reacted to her.
I know this probably isn’t for everyone but I devoured this series and loved every second of it. Book 4 (I know because I started it 🫣) doesn’t pick up from book 3 and instead is placed 15 after. There is also a spinoff which is about the Eden Academy Series which is based on the shifter pups and Brady’s pack. Either way I’ve loved all 3 books 👏🏼🫶🏼
The men.. 👅 Vamps - Walker, Judge, X, Nico & Lucius (twins) Shifters - Brody and Tex + 🐶🐶🐶
🧡 Shadow Bred Series Book 4 - Crave (Did not read) There are more books to read between DRD book 3 and DRD book 4 as it's placed 15 years after the end of book 3 but they’re not really my cup of tea... However I reallllllly advise you to read the DRD series as they were all 5⭐️ books for me!
Thoughts, musings and questions on the series as a whole.
Can someone answer what’s up with shifter mates and how that works??? I have questions. - how did Tex “accidentally” make Mika his mate when they had sex before she went to college? Was that said just to make it easier on the two of them because Brody later says that the ancestors or whatever decided who their mate is?? Which is it? An accidental mating or a mating decreed by the ancestors? Or can only an alpha have a shall we say fated mate? - at another point we find out the females can have multiple Mates but males will only have one mate, one love. If that’s the case why does Tex want every D that swings his way? (Maybe V’s too, but there aren’t really any available V’s around him in the series) he also had no problem with the hit it and quit it with Mika who was supposedly his mate at that time?!? He only cared to find her when he thought she was dead, but before that he was totally fine with his many short term flings? That entire scenario makes me question their mate bond, yeah I know he had no idea but if it’s that strong of a bond why wouldn’t he have pursued a relationship with her rather than a one night stand? It’s not like he didn’t know where to find her. -what’s up with Lucius and Raine? The end of this book they still seemed like a major question mark to me
Judge/Tex/Raine This is 100% my personal feelings and I know many would whole heartedly disagree but…. This is playing off a convo in book 2 between the 3 of them right before it goes to the next level with Judge and Tex. Judge is telling Raine that he and Tex have been taking it slow and haven’t had sex because Tex won’t let him without Raine being there( ok cool nice of you Tex but sounds like Judge would have done it without taking Raine into consideration bc as Judge himself said Tex wouldn’t let him which means Judge tried to push it). The next thing Judge says is that he and Tex aren’t a couple and that Raine is the glue that holds them together and this is where I call MAJOR BS! Why I call BS on that statement both them not being a couple and Raine being their glue - book 1 Judge doesn’t stay until morning with Raine until Tex is there and then suddenly he’s making Tex pancakes ( keep in mind Raine had to leave and Judge stayed with Tex, he also offered to stay and was eager to stay which is more than Raine ever got) - book 1 Judge doesn’t tell Raine jacksh!t about himself. He tells TEX about where all of his scars came from and Raine happens to be there. Every piece of info about his past comes out bc and to Tex not Raine - Tex and Judge spend most of their free time together, including dates and hang outs at Judges apartment from the beginning (Raine isn’t invited to Judge’s apartment until late in book 3 and X shows up or was invited to crash) - Tex is given the opportunity/option to move in with Judge, you know, like they’re a couple. Raine is left to her own devices aka the orgy house - book 2 he spends almost every night sleeping with Tex and Raine occasionally shows up to snuggle, yes she has other men so I get that, but come on if she’s their “glue” and they aren’t a couple they wouldn’t be together 24/7 like that. She’s the occasional celebrity guest in their relationship, esp book 2 -when Tex was gone he came by to give Raine a peck and then ran off to spend the day and night with Judge - Any time the 3 of them are in a room together Raine gets a kiss and then Judge and Tex spend the rest of the scene glued to each other, it’s either leaning on each other, kissing, yearning looks, heads in laps etc etc etc (Raine even has an inner monologue moment in book 3 regarding this and that Judge doesn’t touch her very much and a brief moment of wondering if he’s only with her to be with Tex) -Judge tells, I think Alexander, that Raine loves Tex more than anyone, even more than he does. So Judge does love Tex which is the opposite of not being a couple - Judge admits to Raine in book 3 that her being a succubus was the only reason that he stayed with her in the beginning/came back for seconds( it was basically a why does it matter if that’s the only reason I stayed with you bc I’m not miserable so real high bar there Judge) - the FaceTime call with Mika’s mom we find out that he told his parents he met a guy and fell in love/had a boyfriend aka Judge - Raine telling Walker that Judge doesn’t need her time bc he has Tex so doesn’t feel like he’s missing anything with her
Those are the main points I can think of to call bs on them not being a couple and Raine being their glue. I think if Tex made it to Dark River and Mika wasn’t there Tex would very likely still end up with Judge and forgotten about Mika or at least moved on emotionally.
Really I guess I question Judge and Raine’s relationship. They each have what seems to be a real relationship with Tex, despite all the questions I have on how mates work and how that makes sense with Tex. At first it seemed like Judge and Raine were relationship goals and then a lot got in between them. Why I don’t see Judge as being serious about Raine( or least so in love with her that she’s his glue and a reason to stay in Dark River) - he doesn’t tell her anything personal unless Tex is there and he’s telling Tex (this includes things not covered by his vow of silence) - he never invited her to his home - they are rarely only, most of their sexy times involves someone else that he’s intimate with. They really only had one on ones in book 1 before Tex got there. After that I don’t remember them having any one on ones, always group scenes. The other guys had much more intimacy with Raine and time to grow and explore their relationship. She even tells Walker that he doesn’t need her time bc he has Tex so he doesn’t feel like he’s missing out on Raine time. I’m sorry but that doesn’t say relationship with Raine to me, that says he’s with Tex. - he tells her the only reason he stayed around her was her succubus powers, once they find out what she is, and that it’s ok and he “loves” her and it’s fine bc he was miserable before and now he’s not as miserable or something - after one scene with X and Raine he starts having one on ones with X but doesn’t say anything to her. She only finds out bc she walks in in them and Judge stares her down waiting to see if she gets upset. That says to me that he knows he’s in the wrong and should have had a conversation with her first. I’m not poly but I’m pretty sure one of the basic rules is to communicate and really over communicate so you don’t hurt someone or cross boundaries that have the potential to break a relationship. To be fair they all needed to be better, the guys frequently left Raine out of the communications like the group text they set up but didn’t add her to. Raine did a pretty good job of telling them what was happening if there was a new interest, happened with X, Nico and Lucius. She also didn’t hide anything from the original 4 guys before they were supposedly committed.
I had such a great time reading it and all the characters were very well written. The plot was interesting and all the books added something !
I can understand that this "ending" is not for everyone because it doesn't feel like it's THE END but I'm pretty much satisfied about it.
I have to say that this author very surprised me, I've read Manix by her and dnf it pretty early lol, around 8% I think (I'm not into the MPREG genre at all) and so I was very skeptical about reading something else by her (Deal with a demon was sweet tho) but it's probably one of the best reads I had this year.
It's almost funny how I've started my Reverse Harem journey last year with Den of vipers (wasn't impressed) and then mostly reading through all the RH books I could get my hands on (thanks to the Dark Side series by CM Owens), I remember saying to myself that it'll NEVER be a genre for me because I'm very much into the possessive heroes (and now obsessive ones too lmao).
Look at me now? It's one of my favorite genre and I'm very PICKY when it comes to it because I've read SO MANY BOOKS in this category and I can definitely say that this series is freaking FUNNY and AWESOME!
Anyway ! It's not perfect but it was exactly what I was looking for
It is always great reading this bunch as their dynamic is a fun read. I will say that the story feels incomplete in places, like all three of these books were a type of prequel for another series. Although some story lines were tied up,, it feels like there was no real resolution. The collector was introduced late in the series and that was the big finale. Even with that, however, I liked getting to know these characters.
Oh jeessh, this book was so freaking good! Grace, I must say you had me worried when I read the first book of this series, but then when I read the second book it was a little better then the first one, but gosh, girl you put it down on this third installment... I'm quite satisfied with this series now and praying we get a fourth book of this series.... Whew, baby I enjoyed this ride you put the heroine and her badass alphas through... So much fun did I have with them. I would recommend this series.
Please tell me there’s going to be another book? Because even I fell in love with Raine Baxter and her guys and I need more! Highly recommend Grace McGinty and Dark River series. Her writing is exceptionally great.
This series was great!, Great action. Great steam. Great humour. Great characters. I really enjoyed the book and the guys, even though like half of them are crazy.
I stalled out about halfway through, losing interest pretty fast. I like Raine and her men, and thankfully no one new to keep track of! Well except for 3 new ones- kids. Wolf shifters that have been abused and sold by their family. So bam- instant family.
She still doesn't have control over her life since she is at the mercy of all Vampires wanting her tasty blood. It is finally explained to us that she has just enough Succubus blood in her to ensnare a man. So she has a crisis with her men and some drama. AND it explains why they all want her and are willing to share her between the 7 of them. Even though they swear they would love her for herself anyway. Holy Cow.
Loved how Raine was saved in the end by Everly and the scene with Lucius and Nico is pretty hot.
I was hoping to wrap this up and review it and walk away, but damnit, the book ended up introducing a who new world of really interesting characters right at the end. The potential! Super intriguing. And I really want Alexander to find his daughter and Tex, his mother.
This was exactly what i needed. It was light and funny but had a good story woven through once it kicked in with a climax that's not really at all anxiety provoking. Some of the things I loved in this book - The comedy Accidentally adopting 3 wolf pups Learning what Raine is Lucius Rope bondage
This is setting up for more to come and an expansion on the world which is very exciting. There are already some world spinoffs with Eden, so I'll be adding these to my TBR for future. A fave author for sure!!
The spice in this book was definitely my favorite of the series so far. I was going to say this might have been my favorite one of the series, but I’m not really sure how I feel about the next and last book taking place 20 years in the future? The ending of this one was pretty anticlimactic, but I had assumed the next book would pick up where this left off. I’ll save my full review until I see it all the way through!
Thank you so much for not doing the same old predictable outcomes. The humor was hilarious, I love a book that can be serious and steamy but still make me laugh.m
Spoilers.....
Just when I thought she was going to get kidnapped and that was going to be the cliffhanger, not only did she not, the bad guy was eliminated and it was by a girl not the MC mates. Thank you for not being predictable. So refreshing. Can’t wait for the next one.

O... M.... G!!!! This series! Guuuuuuuys! It just gets better and better! We get more X and LUCIUS!!!! 🤤🤤🤤 Shibari! NICO!!! Dear god... these men. I love me some RH and these dudes?! Waaaaay up there on my list of favorite harems. So many twists, turns, and surprises! Bring on book 4! Way to go, Grace! 💜
Great series! I was having too much fun to complain about anything - love the FMC (didn’t even care that she added to her harem), love the world, love each of the MMCs who are all individual and whose characters never blend, and love the writing. Also love that this is an Aussie writer!
While reading the Shadow Bred series and meeting Raine and her Men. I knew I had to go back and read her story and I’m so glad I did loved this series. I’m looking forward to reading the next series Eden Academy that takes place years later.
Wow there is a lot to unpack with this book. So we find out why Raine is so special and everyone keeps trying to jump her bones even though she’s constantly in danger of being permanently killed. It’s fine, I mean it made the storyline of all the guys falling head over heels make a little more sense. However this book had a couple of issues for me and there may be minor spoilers below so be aware…. -Her powers. Her ability is brought up several times and even tested by Nico and Lucius but that’s it. They have one conversation with her about it and it’s like everyone (INCLUDING HER) forget that she has this rare, and rather useful ability. Until of course at the end when she unwittingly uses it to save herself….. -The kids. Ok I loved them. Like I would totally read a book about them bc they pulled at my heartstring. However they were there for like a few chapters and then gone. Shipped off to be safe for a little bit (which I get) but by the end of the book it was like why even bother with the kids if they aren’t really going to be integrated with the story. Was it so a spin off could be written? Cause they honestly didn’t add that much with as fast as they were gone and then maybe mentioned a handful of times after. -When it comes to her safety Raine has to be both the dumbest and luckiest SOB out there cause seriously . Book after book your almost killed and you still haven’t learned any self preservation. -And lastly the guys. I honestly started to feel like it would have been better if she had less of them. It became all about the sex and I missed some of those initial characters like Walker, Tex and Brody. Those 3 felt like an afterthought in this book and it just didn’t sit right with me. If she had her harem of those 3 and maybe Judge I think I would have enjoyed the book more. That being said her sex scenes with X, Nico and Lucius were freaking hot! But they could have been written with the other characters
When I first read this a couple months ago, I was sad the way it ended. Felt like it needed another book but there was no talk of a 4th book. I am so happy Grace decided to write another one and I can’t freaking wait to read it! Honestly I could read about 20 more books with these characters lol
Another great read for this series! I’m curious what is going to happen in the next one. Hopefully we will get more group scenes *wink wink*
The threat of the Collector in this book was hyped up but honestly kind of a let down on how quickly it was wrapped up. Glad nothing bad happened to Raine and I get that it’s hard to pull a fast one on her with 7 guys around but I think there should have been ‘more’ with the collector since he was so elusive all those years. Can’t fly under the radar that long and then make such a dumb move like the he did, makes no sense to his character. A baby vampire and a teenage shifter was what brought him down so easily, really?
All in all I loved this book and highly recommend!

I was up the whole night reading, because after book 1 and 2, I couldn't go to sleep. I had to know what was going to happen to Raine and her guys.
Now that the problems with the Vampire Council have been resolved, the only thing left is Lucius who seems to want her too and leaves her "presents" on her doorstep. But a present that she didn't expect was to find a wolf shifter pup on her doorstep and her two siblings following the day after. Now Raine has to figure out how to take care of three 5-year-old, while at the same time dealing with the revelation that her vampirism activated the dormant blood of an extinct species and now everyone wants her.
I loved this series so much, and I really hope the author will write more books or novellas with Raine and her guys.
