They call him The Protector.

But once upon a time, he was a knight who had failed in his greatest duty.

It has been said that the Plantagenet royal family is full of vipers. No one knows that so well as Sir Fox de Merest, a knight of the highest order once given the ultimate assignment – to protect a royal bastard from the rage of Eleanor of Aquitaine. It was a task he failed miserably at - he fell in love with the woman he was supposed to protect. That failure resulted in her being committed to a nunnery.

As the trainer known as “The Protector” at the most elite warrior training school in England, Fox has carved out a niche for himself training new recruits and distancing himself from the crushing failure of being unable to protect his love from a furious dowager queen. No one knows of his past, but ten years after his abject failure, the subject rears its ugly head again.

Fox’s lady love was Gisele of Hampshire, royal offspring of Henry the Young King, and now her uncle, King John, is brokering a treaty that would see her plucked from the convent thrust into the limelight of a strategic marriage. Fox is now tasked with saving her from a marriage that would certainly cause her death and taking her to safety – again. At William Marshal's request, he must take a leave from Blackchurch to try and finish what he started those years ago.

Can he complete his task, as ordered, without running away with her for good this time? Or will he deliver her to another convent in secret and simply walk away? Love, it seems, has no reason – and no boundaries, royal or holy.

For Fox and Gisele, it may be the ultimate sacrifice.

And the ultimate pain.

This is a story that more on the romantic side, which is truly wonderful. Fox’s character is a man who really loved his woman and went to hell and back to protect her and make her happy. Gisele at times didn’t make things easy for Fox , but she slowly started to understand how much one man worth is. I thought the book was great! I was entertained and I enjoyed myself.
My only pet peeve is that the heroine being of the age of sixteen and having sex with an older gentleman. I mean no disrespect to the writer. Perhaps if her character could be twenty four or older or simply not addressed in the book. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!

Back with the Blackchurch Guild, this book explores the life of Fox de Merest, and his romance with Gisele of Hampshire.
It’s fast paced, thrilling and some awesome characters of Kathryn’s take Center stage.

The Protector of course is Fox, an exceptional knight and one with lots of promise.
In his younger days he was ordered by William Marshall to protect a young child, Gisele, from many who would have killed her.
Fox performed perfectly until she grew into a beautiful woman, then his duty became much more difficult.

Gisele is stubborn, outspoken and often childish in her actions, leading to a few awkward moments and conversations.
But Fox and her are meant to be together, and neither is willing to give the other up.

A heartfelt and at times emotional story, well written and very much one you may need tissues for.
Excellent reading!
Highly recommended!

An agonizing love story of a young lady and the knight, her protector, who have hope for a future together, but is forbidden. Years later, danger brings them back together. Will their future be denied again? Bring out the tissues with this one. Your heart will break for this couple who never lost hope. Mild descriptive sex.

The Protector by Katheryn Le Veque is a Blackchurch romance and quite a good one. It is told slightly differently than most of her novels, but to the same effect. The bulk of the romance had been over ten years earlier and was told by Fox de Merest, who had been an instructor at Blackchurch for years, to his friends, Tay Monro and Ming Tang, one night when none had been able to sleep. The lady in question is Lady Gisele de Salisbury whom he had been hired to protect when she was a mere ten years of age. She needed protection because she was the bastard daughter of William Marshal, and Queen Margaret, wife of young King Henry. Henry knew she was not his, but other than him it was a closely guarded secret and as an infant she had been sent to the Earl of Hampshire and his wife, at Selborne, to be raised there as a child of the house. Only three times had any attempts been made on her and the last one was violent and dangerous to others. At than point her adoptive parents sent her to Castlereigh, a convent, despite the fact that Fox had wanted to marry her. They had been lovers for years. Fox took her, promising he would come back for her. He had been threatened, as had she, so he ended up at Blackchurch, which was at least close to her. It had been ten years and it was still like it was yesterday.

What a book: full of nuance and detail. The characters, some of whom we have met before, were well-written and full-bodied. Gigi had lived at the abbey, not as a nun, but as a widow for ten long years. She was a terrific character who grew from an immature, entitled young woman into a woman of courage and beauty. She had not wasted her time while at the convent but acquired some skills. She had unlimited faith in Fox and knew he would return for her. It was an enticing story of courage and patience. Both she and Fox had grown in the intervening years and the story reflected that growth. As always, Le Veque has written a novel so full of the honor and glory of the time that it leaves one breathless.

I was invited to read a free e-ARC of The Protector by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #Netgalley #Dragonblade #KathrynLeVeque #TheProtector

Wow! A thoroughly engrossing story!

Where do I even start with this book? Fox and Gisele's love story is a wild roller-coaster of love, betrayal, secrets, and a heartbreaking separation. I couldn't put it down, even when parts of it didn't sit right with my 21st century ideals.

First, I should probably point out a major content warning: there is an attempted suicide detailed on-page, that might be unsettling for some readers. Also, the age gap between the two main characters would be considered highly problematic by today's standards, but this author's world-building is always an immersive experience and this particular situation was probably not as uncommon as we'd like to think during the High Middle Ages.

Fox was assigned to be Gisele's protector, to keep her hidden from those who would use her (because of her royal connections) as a pawn or who would kill her outright. Their early years together are almost idyllic, but they're kept apart by secrets and promises that neither of them is aware of. After a particularly close call, however, they're forced apart and then deliberately kept apart for far too many years.

It's not until the opportunity arises to fight for her safety, once again, that Fox and Gisele decide to take matters into their own hands and force their HEA down the throats of anyone who dares to stand against them. This was my favorite part, even if it was too long in coming. Throughout the story, we see both Fox and Gisele mature from their naïve, impressionable younger selves into their tested and more level-headed adult selves. They paid a heavy price for their youthful indiscretions, but their HEA was rock-solid and more than worth the fight.

One of the things I love best about this author's stories is the attention to detail and the exquisite weaving of her fictional characters with real-life historical figures. This story is set during a very turbulent time in England's history, which in itself provides plenty of conflict for Gisele and Fox. I absolutely adore reading about history, both true and fiction, and this book had me doing copious amounts of my own research to gather more context for the historically factual threads. That, in and of itself, makes this book one of my favorites.

If you're looking for warrior heroes, gallant chivalry, and epic love stories, you owe it to yourself to read everything this author writes. Start with this one. You won't be disappointed. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

I usually read Regency or Highland Romance stories but when I need to shake it up I can always count on KLV. Not only because she writes a different genre I usually read, but you know you are in for an emotional read. Characters that jump off the page!

I didn't care for the h in the beginning because she was spoiled and entitled. The last 1/2 of the book she became an h who deserved our H.

This was written somewhat different by this author. We have them when they've been a secret couple for 6 years. Then they are apart for 10 years and that's when our story gets so emotional. I must admit I couldn't wait for the ending. So when Part 2 started I read the epilogue - yep I did, old heart couldn't stand the suspense, and no it didn't ruin it for me!

Something happens in the beginning that I thought was foolish by the villains. Why remove their victim? They had a job and would have been logical to kill the person in bed?

There maybe a trigger because someone tries to commit suicide.

Lovemaking outside of marriage - heat level 5 out of 5 and only described 2 times I believe.

I loved the dialogue with all the characters, especially when the H was describing his past - very emotional.

No cheating, no cliffhanger, some violence, suspense, HEA, romantic - second chance at love, steam and wonderful main and secondary characters - standalone story. Perfect epilogue 4 years in the future that was emotional but put a bow on the ending.

I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase - which I recommend highly. (ljb)

This medieval romance involves one of the trainers at Blackchurch, the most elite warrior training school in England.  In this story we find out why and how he joined. Get the tissues out for that part.

Sir Fox de Merest is known as The Protector because that was his role for so long. Our hero is a tormented man still struggling emotionally.

Gisele is the illegitimate daughter of a very powerful man. Because of that she has been hidden away most of her life. The family who took her in have loved her like one of their own.  That will not be enough soon.

A very emotional story ,written in two parts. The school is a fascinating place with lots more stories to give us, I'm sure. All the fabulous characters are so different from each other, but have a strong sense of brotherhood.  You will meet characters from other books, but that just adds to the enjoyment. Someone I love to hate because he always makes life so difficult for our heroes is William Marshal. He is especially hard on this hero. He just might be human after all.

Wonderful book and I can't wait for more.

I loved it.

Riddled with guilt, Fox de Merest would have given his life for Gisele, but is forced to give her up instead by William Marshal, his mentor and the man who knighted him. When Gisele's life is put in danger, Fox has no choice but to leave her at a convent or face the lasting fury of William Marshal. This novel is well-written, interwoven into history and a thread of suspense runs all the way through it. Fox becomes a Blackchurch trainer and settles near the convent to be close to Gisele should she ever need him, with his heart remaining true to her despite the nightmares and the heartache that he continues to experience after all the years of exile. When the day finally arrives that he receives the token proving that Gisele has need of him, Fox and his friends lose no time to going to her rescue, where a further surprise awaits him. Despite the King's intent, Gisele is rescued once again, but this time Fox refuses to let go, and when faced with William Marshall, it is Gisele who makes a final stand, refusing to bow down to his dictates. The novel comes to a lovely conclusion, bringing family and friends together.

Loyalty, Commitment, Family Made This an Extremely Enjoyable Story:
This emotionally intoxicating story is about Fox and Gisele and their love that never wavers even though it has been forbidden.
The book is actually written in 2 parts which I found enjoyable. The first part tells of the beginning relationship between Fox the guardian of Helen who is a ward of his liege and how they eventually fall in love. The second part deals with their emotional separation, and how Fox's became part of The Black Church Guild.
Will Fox and Helens relationship continue? Well, this is a love story after all, but beware the last part is jaw gripping, with many sad and sweet tears streaming down my face, terrifying danger, along with a Yahoo! laugh out loud ending for the nuns that couldn't have happened if not for the comradery of the Black Church Guild. Bravo! guys.
Some stories are just more superior than others and this one was certainly worth reading.

Another amazing story from Katherine Le Veque. My emotions were all over the place with this heart breaking story.
Fox de Merest was an exceptional knight that was ordered by William Marshal to protect Gisele of Hampshire. Gisele is the illegitimate daughter of very important and powerful people. As she grew older, Gisele grew into a beautiful young woman who only had eyes for Fox, and Fox for Gisele.
Unfortunately, her father demanded that Gisele had to be sent to a convent. Thus Gisele and Fox were separated, and no contact between them was allowed.
Kathryn brings the reader into the story in so many ways. Yes, you will need kleenix. I felt like I was right there with Gisele and Fox throughout the story, and I was sharing their emotions. Kathryn takes you into the Blackchurch Guild and the many characters that have established a "Family".
This is one story you do not want to miss. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.
I received ARC from Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley.

An especially touching story...

Her identity is secret. Her location is secret. And the greatest knight in the kingdom has entrusted her care and safety to Fox. Fox has been assigned to protect a young woman by his liege, the Marshall. Her name is Gisele, and she is just a child, but as time passes, Gisele grows into a young woman. A lovely young woman who falls in love with Fox. And for whom Fox returns those feelings. But Gisele is a political pawn, and an attempt is made on her life, causing the Marshall to order her removed to a convent. Fox begs to be allowed to marry Gisele but is denied and threatened with dire circumstances should he even be in contact with her again. He is forced to escort her to the convent and leave her there. He can no longer return to the Marshall's territory and starts a new career as a trainer of knights at the Blackchurch Guild not far from the abbey. There he remains for ten years until he receives a message that sends him and all the trainers at Blackchurch riding for the abbey.

What a story!

I loved this book so much. Fox was sent by William Marshal to protect his bastard daughter who most believed to be the daughter of the previous king. Gisele was young and foolish at times but she was in love with Fox and he with her. But there were others who wanted to see her dead. After the 3rd attempt on her life, she was sent to the abbey to be a nun. William Marshal would not approve a marriage between Fox and Gisele and threatened Fox if he tried to contact her ever again. I cried multiple times in this book, heartbroken for the separated lovers. So much going on. Family secrets, manipulative royalty, hidden plots, assassination attempts, threats, betrayal, protectiveness, loneliness, loyalty, and love unending. I love the brotherly bond between the trainers of Blackchurch and can’t wait to read all their stories. The first two books of this series have been fantastic. Love this author.

At first I wasn't going to continue this story as I found Gisele quite annoying, but I kept on reading because I really like Fox as a character. I didn't find anything new or different about this story as the author claims, just another story, quick and easy read and not much gore and bloodshed. For once she didn't kill off decent, likable characters. It's a hit or miss with this author's books so it really depends on what you're reading. There's been books of hers in the past I have not finished as I have disliked the fact she plays on mental health, and kills off decent/likable characters and characters that are redeemable she doesn't care to do anything about. Also, most of her heroines I do find quite childish, and not one redeeming quality about them. The fact all of her suppose heroines are this exquisite beauties really leaves an artificial taste and doesn't really make for an enjoyable realistic read. So it's really up to the reader and their interests.

A great story

Fox was a Blackchurch trainer and 10 years earlier had been a protector of King Henry and Margaret’s bastard child. She was just a child at the time of his protection but grew into a beautiful women who he fell in love with.
After an attempt on her life the decision was made to send her to Canonsleigh Abbey. He vowed to her that he would return for her if he couldn’t get permission to marry her he would return and they would run away together. When he got to William Marshall’s castle he told him what had happened and where Gisele was now taken to. He again asked for permission to marry her but William refused. Fox being very upset makes William mad and William told him to find a new Liege and not to ever see Gisele again, that he would have people watching her.
That’s when Fox went to Blackchurch.

Handsome, honourable Fox de Merest, a knight of extraordinary talent has been in love with the beautiful Gisele of Hampshire for so many years, he can't remember a time when he wasn't. But with Gisele's complicated birth and background, fate is a fickle mistress and although she loves him too, they are separated for ten years.
But their love has never faded, and when Gisele's life is threatened, Fox comes to the rescue with his Blackchurch brethren.
This is a story of love and emotion.
As usual, Kathryn Le Veque writes a beautiful story full of humour, plots, upset, secrets and love. Her descriptive writing brings these characters to life, so much so, that ou cannot help but become attached to them.
I didn't want this book to end.

Amazingly good!

Wow! Again one of KLV's masterpieces! Sir Fox de Merest had no idea that being the best he could be would hurt so deeply. Sent by the greatest, most powerful knight ever, William Marshall, to protect his most precious belonging, Fox does his ultimate best with honor, tenderness and true to his calling, only to pay the ultimate price of betrayal and a broken heart. Lady Giselle, not knowing her predestined path, meets and falls desperately in love with her protector only to have her heart broken by a father she doesn't know. William Marshall controls the lives of many and will come to regret his hasty decisions and eat his words.

Tender and True

What wonderful words. Fox, a most worthy knight was given the assignment of protecting a very beautiful young lady who became the love of his life. Gisele was given to be raised by a most loving family that treated her as their own. As she grew into womanhood she fell in love with her protector. They had been denied marriage by her true father. They waited patiently to request marriage again and were denied again. This is a story that must be read to find out how it all ends. It is so heart wrenching. A must read!

Always a Pleasure

I have not read a book by this author that has ever disappointed in any way. I wait for all of the new books when they come out. This was a lovely story with brilliant characters. I loved every moment of it. The Black church Guild is a wonderful series. Maybe she will tell the story of Susanna when she spent time at the Guild being a woman in a world of men. Whatever comes next will be something wonderful to read no matter what so I will be waiting as patiently as possible.

This was a heartbreaking story of true love being denied. It has been 10 years since he had to ride away from the love of his life. Fox has stayed close to where Gigi is and has never seen her since the day that his heart was destroyed. Gigi has missed Fox every day and has some things to tell him if she ever gets to see him again. Things start to happen that will alter their lives. I absolutely loved this story! I loved Fox and Gisele's story - devoted to each other from a young age, but circumstances forced them apart for many years. As always, Ms Le Veque gives us emotion & angst, intrigue and suspense. I love the cameraderie of the members of the Black Church Guild - each book feels like a family reunion, getting to see what's happening with the characters from previous books. Definitely a must-read book and series!

My goodness, I was crying throughout this whole storyline, the beginning, the past and part two. I knew the Marshall was cruel and strict, but what he did too Fox was just horrible! There are some laughs in here too, nuns fighting with pots & pans lol you just have to read this. Once again, another five stars for KLV, never disappoints this reader.
