"They were together. In the darkness of the same deep, unknowable waters, they were together."

Well, I sure did use my yaoi goggles while reading this series!

Jokes aside, the first two volumes to this ongoing series are pretty good. I definitely enjoyed this second volume much better than the first - primarily because this second volume had an overarching plot from start to finish, allowing you to get invested in the both the introduced side characters and the mystery. (By contrast, the first volume feels more like a collection of connected short stories, which makes sense given that the volume used to be a web series before being traditionally published.)

I'm not actually super familiar with a lot of the practices described in the series but I didn't feel particularly lost. (Of course, I won't claim that I understood 100% of what was said in the book, either.) The first volume acted as pretty good introductions to many things: the protagonist, the deuteragonist, the cast of coworkers, the countryside setting, the many supernatural and spiritual practices being observed. It prepares you for the deep dive into occult beliefs here in the second volume. So I would say that it's fine to start this series even if you know next to nothing about Japanese occultism; in fact, it might even make you more curious about it.

In any case, I really like both Misato and Ryouji, their bond with each other, and also the side characters such as Misato's coworkers and his brother. Aside from the supernatural mystery part of the plot, you get some pretty good explorations of Misato and Ryouji and their relationships with each other, with the people around them, and with the world. They have unique and tragic circumstances, and they deal with things in different ways. And yet they both come together and learn to rely on each other. I may joke about this series being adjacent to yaoi, but in all seriousness, it portrays some pretty positive and heartwarming (non-romantic) relationships between men.

Looking forward to where this series is going. I think I can expect more of Misato's and Ryouji's histories being unraveled as the volumes progress.

These two are my delicious light novel, spirit-adventure secret. Good stories, though sometimes the translation makes the dialogue or emotions feel strange or fall a little flat. I hope we get more!

I’m glad I found this series. It’s interesting, heartfelt and nice. Good mix of feelings, light supernatural mystery and supernatural action.

This book introduces Misato’s brother. We learned more about Misato’s past, mountain spirits and his relationship/partnership with Ryoji deepened. It’s longer than the first book. Also big point, more information was revealed about Misato’s mom.

Sigh…the BL vibes/Bromance vibes were so good in this one. Misato and Ryoji are definitely good friends, blushing about using the word partners…sigh. They’re not dating but in the text they can’t define what their relationship is but they’re really important to each other. For me that is the point, their connection is the deepest emotional relationship in theirs lives currently and so far ever. They keep it real with each other.

They’re good main characters. If they weren’t a good, complimentary pairing the stories wouldn’t work. Can’t forget about Shirota!! Hopefully we get more from him in the next volume as well.

Looking forward to volume 3. Hopefully volumes 4 and 5 are released in English in a timely fashion.

Volume 2 is even thicker than volume 1, yet the story is tighter and more solid, with just one big theme: or maybe two, but they are intertwined tightly into one. While trying to solve the mystery of a curse in a certain part of Tomoe, Misato and Ryouji have to deal with the disappearance of Misato's younger brother. However, the two cases run parallel - are parallel to each other in details and nuance, merging into one. This book is rich in traditional and religious details, but the translation smoothly helps us to understand things along while we read the story without causing us to check footnotes time and again.

I wish we could read more stories about Misato and Ryouji soon - really loving the bond they're having (which is also explored even deeper in this volume!).

What a great sequel. I need more, and I know more is to come, but I'd love to be able to read the original webnovel too.
I'm still not sure about the general direction of the plot, I can't even begin to imagine what ending the series could have. Solving the stuff around Misato's mother is definitely on the table I'm guessing. I just hope we get to meet the father sometime too, bet he's very similar to Misato, just older and tired™.
I like the monster of the week format with enjoyable recurring characters, so I have no complaints. Apparently the third installment gets more dramatic/tragic from what I've managed to gather from the jp reviews, so I'm really looking forward to it.
Shirota best boy 🥺

I enjoyed this volume of Onmyoji and Tengu Eyes. You get to learn more about Misato's past and his relationship with his family and in particular his younger brother, Katsuki.

Misato is also learning to depend on other people and not to take on everything on his own.

I did not enjoy this one as much as the first one because the whole book was ONE case only. I likes that on the first one there were several cases. Onto my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

Loved reading the further adventures of Ryouji, Misato, and little Shirota. Seeing the growth in the characters was nice and getting more Misato backstory was fun. I’m very much looking forward to reading the next volume.
