Wish Lists Lead to This

Rate this book
Whenever Seb wants to get something done, he makes a list, and he sets deadlines. He's been in Cape Town for 2 years and has yet to do all the touristy things the city has to offer, so he's set his 24th birthday as his deadline to do 100 things on the list he’s come up with.

JJ’s in a rut. He has no friends hates his job (working at a shirtless waiter at a gay bar isn't all it's cracked up to be), and is sick of one-night stands. After an awkward encounter with a former crush, JJ finds himself roped into helping Seb accomplish an item on his list – but plans change after he finds a box of abandoned kittens the day he’s suppose to meet up with Seb.

When the two decide to foster the kittens together, they’re both surprised at how well they get along, since on paper they’re exact opposites – especially after their new budding friendship turns into something more complicated after JJ finds a secondary, secret list in the back of Seb’s notebook...

Wish Lists Lead to This involves strangers to friends with benefits to lovers, a lot of pining, a dash of angst, an armful of kittens, and a HEA. This book is part of a shared-universe romance series, but each book can be read as a stand-alone. Roughly 88,000 words long.

I loved this one a bit more than the first book in the series . There's more steam 🔥🔥 , a non binary MC , a precious demi MC , a big muscular jock with a marshmallow center, adorable kittens, found family, wish lists , surprises, forced proximity and a strangers to friends to benefits to more situations that is kind of the sweetest .

I wanted this. I want to wake up each day with someone in my arms, with pets sleeping in the bed with us. I wanted to get up and feed the cats and make breakfast for the both of us and then kiss my person awake before we ate breakfast together.
And Jesus fucking Christ, but how amazing would it be if that person was Seb?

I'm really excited to be putting this book out into the world soon! When I wrote All Roads Lead to This I jokingly said to my book friend something along the lines of, "I know a lot of authors get attached to their secondary characters, and I really hope that doesn't happen to me because I don't want to make a series".....That was foreshadowing, apparently.

Seb and Zea, Cedric's friends and housemates, have quite small parts in the first book (though Zea plays a bigger role), but I grew attached to them very quickly. At some point while writing ARLTT I thought up an idea for a story for Zea (which will be in third and final book in the series), and then I was thinking about Seb. Seb is shy and sweet and helpful - he gives Cedric a lift into work most days and makes lasagne the day they come home from their trip. He loves cats and keeps trying to convince the house to adopt a cat, but one of the other housemates is allergic so they can't.

The idea for this story came from the throw-away line in the first book: Seb wants a cat, Seb can't have a cat, what kind of situation would have to play out for Seb to get a cat? The idea for a romance about fostering kittens soon took form in my head, and then a sudden lightbulb flickered on in my head for his romantic pairing: JJ.

JJ has an even smaller, though significant role, in the first book, as Rueben's ex-fuck-buddy and a catalyst for how Rueben and Cedric end up getting together. We don't see a lot of JJ in the first book, but I thought the character had some potential, and I loved the opposites attract dynamic that Seb and JJ could potentially had: Seb is a nerd, and JJ is a jock; Seb is pretty feminine and JJ is really masculine; Seb's style is a pastel alternative aesthetic, while JJ mostly wears pretty straight-laced boring clothes.

This story takes place in 2022 and COVID-19 is part of their universe. In this book I wanted to bring in some of my own feelings I've had these past two years, in terms of the social anxiety and isolation I've dealt with. The snapshot we get of JJ in the first book is very surface level, because we only see him for a moment from Rueben's POV, and Rueben is pretty dismissive of him. But when JJ gets a chance to tell his own story he is a sweet, lonely, anxious man that is just trying to find his place in the world, and people to care about.

Seb also deals with his fare share of loneliness and mental-health in this story, too, and his friendship with Zea and Cedric play a huge role in this story - if you're a fan of found-family dynamics, these three have that in spades.

A lot of JJ and Seb's issues in this story parallel each other. And they get brought together through the strongest thing in the world: adorable kittens that need a home.

I hope you all enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Wish Lists Lead To This follows Seb and JJ on their own paths of self discovery and growth. Seb wants to experience new things now that the pandemic has let up, so he makes a list of things he wants to fulfill before his birthday. JJ has felt stuck with the life he has now and wants something to be different but doesnt know what. By happenstance, the two of them find a box of abandoned kittens and decide to move in together temporarily to take care of them!

This book was all sorts of cute and sweet with a little bit of spice thrown in. I absolutely loved the character development and really getting to know Seb and JJ. Watching them discovery things about themselves and them trying new things with each other was really lovely to read. I didnt read the technical first book of this series, but you can definitely jump into this one without prior knowledge! Kay Claire really does show really beautiful characters coming together by chance and experiencing firsts with each other. I really loved reading about JJ and Seb’s relationship and I cannot wait to read their other book!

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves queer contemporary romance, enby and demisexual rep and amazingly queer side characters!

Wish Lists Lead to This is the second book in Kay Claire’s Lead to This series. It follows one of Cedric’s (MC from book 1) roommate’s, Seb, and another character that had a brief appearance in the previous book, JJ.

WLLTT had a lot of angst, pining, some lack of communication (talk my dears), friendships, sadness, kittens, mental health rep, various queer reps, happiness, …

First thing I wanna say is I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH! Wish Lists was a delight to read. Just the cuteness of the kittens were enough to make me want to continue, but it offered so much more than that.

Both MCs are lovely. JJ is a big surfer dude who likes to exercise and eat healthy, but he has so much more to offer. JJ is shy and has wanted to make queer friends and feel more part of the queer community for a very long time. Seb works in IT, loves cats (but can’t adopt because one of his roommates is allergic), is a sweetheart, and he likes making lists and setting deadlines.

Seb moved to Cape Town right before the pandemic started, so he wrote a list of things he wants to do before his next birthday. This list is a way for him to do and try things he couldn’t for the past two years.

Seb and JJ come together to take care of some abandoned adorable kittens. Isn’t this just the cutest way to get close to someone? Bonding by taking care of kittens seems like the best.

As these two MCs get to know each other due to their forced proximity, there’re new discoveries and discussions about their sexuality and identities. I loved seeing JJ realising things about himself and using that to understand himself better.

One of my all time favourite book trope is found family, and the way Kay shows it in their books is so heartwarming and lovely. Seb’s group of friends is amazing and they make sure to show their support and love for each other in any way possible. Friendship and community is a very important topic in this book, and I loved seeing it so well written and developed here.

Even though you can read Wish Lists as a standalone, I recommend reading the first book too. I mean, there’s no point in deprivation yourselves of all the happy feelings book 1 will give you.

I really enjoyed All Roads Lead to This, but I loved this one even more! I just adored JJ, and reading about his loneliness did things to my heart. This was such a fluffy, but also emotional read, and the kittens added even more cuteness.

Wow! What an insanely fun and emotional read!
This book is the exact example of why I love when authors continue their stories by exploring their whole world and characters. I love love loved to see the boys from the first instalment in the Lead to This series, but I was so excited to get to know the lovely characters that are Seb and JJ.

I honestly had a hard time with JJ in ARLTT because we only saw him from an outsider pov but being reintroduced to him as a main character in Wish Lists Lead to This, I started loving him immediately. He’s so real and relatable to me, and his connection Seb and the way that they connect, just wow, it’s an incredible thing to witness.

The relationship that Seb and JJ form is so natural. They filled a part of each other that was needed in such a refreshing way.
I felt so many things reading this. They want each other so bad and I was screaming!!

This book reads so easily, I was immediately sucked in and couldn’t stop for hours, it was amazing.
I feel very lucky to have gotten early access to this lovely book. Kay, your writing gives me this cozy, nostalgic feeling that I was very surprised by, as the story is set in current times. There is just something so comforting in characters that are so relatable and real. 💕🐱 and KITTENS! 🐱

~ found family
~ mental health focused
~ making friends
~ nb/ demiboy rep

if i could describe this book in one word, it would be 'wholesome'. kay claire's characters have an inherent warmth in them, and that's why their books feel like a personalized hug to me.

the story follows two side characters from book 1, Seb and JJ. Seb is your sweet, shy, introverted soul who can't easily form friendships. JJ, on the other hand, waiting tables at a gay club, desperately wants to make friends and keeps ending up sleeping with them (not his first choice).

as someone who's an introvert and struggles with making friends too, i felt them deeply.

these two had the most adorable friends to lovers arc i have read. they already had a faint connection through Reuben, which made for pretty uncomfortable and funny scenes. but i ADORE what made them cross the bridge to being actual friends: fostering kittens Seb found on the beach, which forced them to move in together for a few weeks. i am not even a cat person but those scenes just gave me LIFE.

and drop in the added tang of a friends-with-benefits situation, and you have got a perfect concoction of romantic and spicy here.

there are so many things i loved about the story.

~ i loved Seb. i loved Seb's wishlists and him learning to be more comfortable with himself through it and i loved how his enby/demiboy identity was discussed and explored.

~ i loved how his depression and mental health was dived into. i adore how his friends helped and supported him through it, how they were his true family, people he felt he could belong with.

~ i loved Seb and JJ's relationship developed: both struggling with connection for so long, and then finally proximity bringing them closer, through playing with the kittens and looking after them to having 12am and 3am chats, to JJ helping Seb with the various items on his wishlists, organizing trips to random places at random times to fulfill them. their comfort with each other steadily growing and establishing a genuine friendship slowly.

there was a /he fell first but he fell harder/ arc here that was delicious to read: Seb crushing on JJ slowly but JJ hankering hard after Seb after their first "meaningless" kiss. that won't ever NOT make me giddy with delight.

~ i loved how JJ's demisexuality was explored and added so much meaning to a generally meaningless friends-with-benefits situation.

~ i loved how JJ was so *invested* in Seb's lists (the relationship and overall ones) — and so palpably cared about Seb, its weight was tangible on the screen. i loved how Seb noticed JJ's loneliness without being told ever and worked to rectify that.

~ i loved the glimpses we got into South African places and landscapes and culture due to Seb's wishlist.

~ and i loved. JJ finally making friends at his gay club, and finding a new direction in his life.

again there were some minor tiffs that were mostly my pet peeves, like some repetitive phrases and overuse of exclamation marks. but otherwise this was such a wonderful, sweet wholesome story.

This 2nd book in the series was so good I had to force myself to put it down at night and I even stayed up late one night to finish it.

In this second book, we get to see JJ who appeared briefly in book 1. I absolutely loved that, after seeing him through Rueben’s POV (who thought he was nice but boring) we get to see his story and discover why he looks bland to other people.

I really loved getting 2 shy MC and related to them on so many levels, like Seb always sticking to the same orders when eating out or the difficulty to talk to someone for the 1st time but being more relaxed if I know them a bit more. I got attached to both really quickly and the story flew so fast because of it.

Just like in the 1st book there was no big unreasonable drama toward the end which I appreciated and overall I liked the length of the story. It didn’t feel too long and was well-paced, which is not always an easy task in the romance genre!

I also loved getting to see the familiar characters from book 1 (it’s set in the same universe as All Roads Lead to This but can be read as a stand-alone)

I highly recommend this MM romance to any fan of the genre. It takes place in South Africa which is a great change. (the 1st book has a road trip theme so you get to see the country for those who are curious :)

JJ and Seb are stupidly cute! Both a little clueless and socially anxious, unsure of themselves but desperately looking for connection with no idea how to communicate it with the people around them, hello recipe for slow burn, pining and miscommunication. Add four foster kittens and you’ve got an adorable forced proximity setting. And the unexpected spice?! A delight.

I really enjoyed this read, it delivers on low angst while maintaining real life issues for both MCs and covers mental health rep well. There’s a great cast of side characters, Zea and Cedric are top tier friends, but Seb’s family can get to fuck.

A sweet and spicy read!

As much as I liked the first book in this series, I enjoyed this one even more! Seb and JJ were absolutely adorable together, and I loved seeing their journey from strangers to friends with benefits to lovers. They both gained so much confidence and self-worth throughout the book, and they truly brought out the best in each other. Here's hoping that Zea gets their own story next, and I'd like to see more of Tsepho and Mickey as well! I look forward to reading more from Kay Claire. 4.5/5 stars!

This is even better than the first one!
Mix: social anxiety x 2 and a box of kittens needing foster parents. Add to that a cute non-binary nerd with a wish/to do list, and a beefy jock with a heart of gold. You'll get an incredibly sweet story with lots of queer representation (including demisexuality, non-binary characters, transmasc and -femme side characters, and lots of love).
Also one of the best found families there is.

I had a community now.

JJ and Seb are adorable together!

Okay, I'm a dog person, but if any book could turn me into a cat person, it's this one because the kittens galore was freaking adorable instead of overwhelming.
I truly appreciated both demi and anxiety rep. We always need more of that.
Going in, I wasn't sure I'd like JJ as a main character, but I couldn't have been more wrong.
Loved it! Kay Claire has a way of writing that keeps me entertained while giving me all the feels, and each of their books I've read so far has left me with a warm feeling.

Highly recommend!

touching !!!!

do you like mutual pining? then you’ll love this! two socially anxious softies become friends and shortly add in more benefits to that new friendship. both hopelessly enamored with the other with no idea of the feelings they share.
i enjoyed this one even more than the first book! it’s nice to see an author grow and mature in their writing!!! i’m looking forward to the third book surrounding zea!

This was so cute and sweet and gah! Seb and JJ are adorable and made me laugh and cry so much throughout this book. Plus, I loved getting to see more of Cedric and Rueben and getting to know Zea more. (Hi, I would love it if there was another book about Zea, just saying… 🫶🏻) I love all of this precious, queer found family! 🥰🥰 I’m also giving this one more star than book one because it felt like it flowed better, even though I absolutely loved book one, too!

Anyway, if you enjoy sweet, low-stakes LGBTQIA+ romances—although they never feel low-stakes to me when I’m as invested in the story as I was in this one because they make me ugly cry and lose my mind during the everything-goes-to-crap section either way, but still, low-stakes to normal people 😬—then PLEASE check this out. Check out the whole series. It is well worth your time. (CWs listed at the front of the book.)

Absolutely loved this forced proximity romance! JJ and Seb are so so sweet together. JJ’s longing for friends just broke my heart but watching him find his community out it back together. The kittens were also the sweetest. I loved the list element, it was a fun component!

This was such a cute read! Overall the story and plot itself was AMAZING! The characters are very believable, and I love how their relationship progressed. It seemed very realistic, how they were put in their situation and how they dealt with getting to know each other. Each character felt unique, and I especially loved JJ, wanting to make friends but having trouble, and not knowing where he was going in life. The found family is so precious! And Seb's list is such a cool idea, and to base the novel around that concept, bringing characters together. After reading this, I'm definitely curious to read the author's other works! Thank you so much for writing such a lovely book.
