The writing was still consistently tight and strong. Also, the horror was just enough and the stories were succinctly compelling. I do notice a motif in that whatever stories and topics there were, there was always gory detail, not the off-putting type but the one that reminded you that this is truly horror.
And that was what I ADORED in the writing. That is, finally I have found an author who wrote short stories that I consistently loved. Previously I read some good authors too, but for the short type in which ideas were novel, gore was necessary and not used recklessly, and the writing was fluid without any forced details, this was the first author that had all of those "requirements". I am just so lucky to encounter Matthew's works.
For that, I will continue to read Vol 3, 4, and 5, etc.
For the stories in this book, I think any summary is merely redundant as nearly all are really good. You just need to see it for yourself. Yet, there were some stories that were a bit "weak" (hence the 4.5 stars) but immediately were made up by other excellent ideas from other stories.
These stories are so well written with plenty of unexpected twists. The characters are so interesting without being over-written. Sometimes with short stories, the plot suffers with simplicity or characters are typical stereotypes.. these tales had me at the edge of my seat. I am looking forward to reading other tales of terror!
What a clever and fun book (2) full of short stories! Every one of them worth reading! I find myself wanting the story to not end, but when it does I then find that I still thoroughly enjoyed it! If that makes sense?! I haven’t read any of Matthew Doggert’s books that hasn’t been really good!! 👏👏👏
Currently binging a few of these collections on Kindle Unlimited, and i am LOVING these , some of the better written ones, and they make you think a little.
Some collections get hung up on trying to hard to make everything seem uniform, but these sets while not related , really go well together, sometimes I'm shocked, sometimes I'm horrified , its wonderful.
