Lost Legacies #2

A Shift in Fate

Rate this book
Six months after Nemain defeated the warlock leadership known as the Circle, she’s soaking in the freedom that comes with no longer being hunted. Her former lover turned enemy, Sebastian, is dead and the Circle has retreated in defeat. However, her reprieve comes to an end when a friend asks for a favor that she can’t refuse. Not when it could lead to answers that Nemain wants and alliances she desperately needs.

After a young fae boy with extraordinary magic wandered into a remote village in one of the fae realms, the village was destroyed. No one knows the identities or allegiances of the fae who destroyed the village, but one thing was clear, their magic consumed other magic. They were devourers—or at least part devourer. While most didn’t believe that was possible, Nemain certainly did. She had been hiding her devourer heritage for her entire life.

While Nemain and her friends set out to find the mysterious child and search for answers about the fae with magic so similar to hers, they discover that there are more secrets in their world than they ever thought possible. Old secrets, new secrets. Ancient secrets long forgotten. Secrets from both friend and foe. And Nemain is in the center of it all. Can she save herself and the fae child? And how much is she willing to sacrifice?

Maddox Grey is a queer nonbinary elder millennial who still remembers vividly what it was like to be emotionally damaged by the season two finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

They write morally grey characters who fall for equally unhinged morally grey love interests. And the banter flows as fast as the action in the stories they craft.

When they’re not putting their characters through hell, Maddox is playing video games, reading smut, burying their nose in comic books, or hiding behind a pillow while they watch horror movies.

Even better than book 1! The plot is still tightly woven, well-paced, everything feels like it resolves and is consistent. Didn't see any grammar/spelling errors this time. Nemain is still an amazing protagonist. Dialogue is still witty and hilarious. Excited to continue this series.

This book was… absolutely wonderful. The narrator helped me to feel emotions emanating from the characters and I love them even more. The world building is truly simple in the best way and I appreciate that in an urban fantasy.

In *A Shift in Fate*, Maddox Grey immerses us once again in the dangerous, magical world of Nemain, where old enemies, buried secrets, and dark powers threaten to upend her newfound peace. Six months after defeating the warlock Circle, Nemain is no longer hunted and is finally enjoying a sense of freedom—until she’s asked for a favor she can’t refuse. Her journey into the fae realms to help uncover the truth behind a young fae boy with extraordinary, dangerous powers forces her to confront her own hidden heritage and long-buried secrets.

With her friends by her side, she embarks on a perilous quest to track down the mysterious child and uncover the truth behind the devourers. Along the way, Nemain faces new alliances, old grudges, and an array of secrets that span both friend and foe.

A Shift in Fate Lost Legacies #2 by Maddox Grey

After defeating the warlocks from The Circle, her wolf-shifter boyfriend Andrei now knows what Nemain does while she is away, and although he is crazy about her, he needs time to tame his wolf and absorb all he now knows about his girlfriend. Her life is more dangerous than he realized and how she and her friends handle problems is deadlier than he imagined. Six months later, she is enjoying her freedom from her crazy ex Sebastian who was a warlock that over time became mad for power and expected Nemain to give up her powers to help him. He kept her for a year, torturing her until she agreed to take him back and help him succeed in his plans. Luckily her best friend Mikhail (vampire/shifter) rescued her and trains with her constantly to prepare her for future attacks.

Although the threat of Sebastian is gone, there is no rest for the wicked when her friend asks for a favor that she can’t refuse. Nemain still needs answers to questions and this may lead her to what she has been searching for. Mission: Find a fae boy with extraordinary magic that the seely fae want to get their sticky evil paws on. The fae looking for him were devourers—or at least part devourer. A form of magic that when you fight with them, their magic feeds off the magic thrown at them making them stronger while sucking the magic out of the fae fighting them. The same form of magic that Nemain has been hiding since she was a child. Before they find this extraordinary magical child, she is approached by a few young vampire shifters on the run. They are trying to escape fae that wants to use their abilities and the youngest is just 5 years old. Losing her parents at a young age and seeing the kid's desperation to be protected, Nemain cannot refuse their plea and take them in.

While the vampire fae children are safely locked away in her heavily warded apartment building, Nemain and her friends set out to find the mysterious child and search for answers about the fae with magic so similar to hers. She didn't expect to find more secrets that had been hidden from them and answers to what happened to her parents. Nemain's magic is in the center of all as there is a prophecy that her parents tried to save her from and this boy is part of it as well. She is faced with protecting several kids, her friends, and herself. She needs all her found family to rally together if they are going to get through this alive.

Review of A Shift in Fate (Lost Legacies #2) by Maddox Grey

A Shift in Fate is a gripping continuation of the Lost Legacies series, and it more than lives up to the high expectations set by the first book. Maddox Grey’s masterful blend of action, emotional depth, and complex world-building makes this a standout in the fantasy genre.

The plot takes an even darker and more intense turn in this second installment. The characters are thrust into difficult situations that test their loyalties, personal growth, and their very sense of identity. Grey continues to build on the intriguing concept of fated legacies, with each character facing monumental choices that could alter the course of their futures. The tension is palpable, and the stakes feel personal, making the reader emotionally invested in the characters’ journeys.

Character development is a key strength of A Shift in Fate. Grey excels at deepening the emotional arcs of the protagonists, who are faced with increasingly complex dilemmas. Their relationships, both romantic and platonic, evolve in organic and engaging ways, adding richness to the story. The protagonist’s internal struggle with their legacy and the weight of their decisions is poignant and makes for some of the most compelling moments in the book.

The pacing is well-balanced, with Grey skillfully weaving fast-paced action with moments of introspection and world-building. The plot is full of twists that keep you on your toes, and just when you think you have it figured out, Grey introduces a new development that adds layers of intrigue.

The world-building continues to be one of the highlights of the series. Grey expands the universe with greater depth, adding new lore, characters, and settings that make the world feel even more immersive. The magic system and mythology continue to be central to the plot, and Grey’s attention to detail makes the fantastical elements feel grounded and believable.

Overall, A Shift in Fate is a thrilling, emotionally resonant sequel that pushes the Lost Legacies series to new heights. With its captivating characters, high stakes, and expertly crafted world, it’s a must-read for fans of fantasy and those who love a story that keeps them hooked from start to finish.

I like where the story is going so far, and I am enjoying the experience with the series. There are some aspects that I am unsure about, but I’m willing to hold out for the next book. Can’t wait to see where else this goes!

5 ⭐️s= Perfect story, exciting, engrossing, well developed complex characters, solid plot with few to no holes, descriptive environments and place settings, great mystery elements, realistic dialogue, believable reactions and behaviors, loved this story so much I’d buy it.

4 ⭐️s= Great story, highly entertaining and enjoyable, exciting storyline, well developed characters and settings, a few discrepancies but nothing that can’t be overlooked. Believable actions and reactions, realistic dialogue, a book I would consider buying.

3 ⭐️s= Good but not great story, noticeable discrepancies, grammatical and or spelling errors, undeveloped characters or unbelievable behaviors but still readable. Nothing majorly wrong with the story, just not interesting enough for me to continue. Would not buy the book.

2 ⭐️s= Not offended by the story, but not interested enough to finish. Unbelievable characters, poor writing, many mistakes, big holes or discrepancies, many spelling or grammatical errors, characters not believable, unlikeable or TSTL.

1 ⭐️= Offensive, extremely poor writing, horrible characters, victimization, gaslighting, blatant abuse, unnecessary violence, child endangerment, or any other highly objectionable behaviors by Main characters. Would never buy this book, and do not recommend it to anyone.

This is a middle book in the middle of a series in the middle of an epic showdown.

Not a lot to say other than it's middleness in the middle of a story.

It was an out-of-my-comfort-zone kind of read. Vampires and shifters annoy the everliving fuck out of me. I think I grew out of them after I got over my Laurell K. Hamilton/Anne Rice phase in my teens. So that may account for why I had trouble getting through this one at my usual speed. Not the book or author's fault. There's nothing inherently wrong with the book, writing or the story. It's an overall enjoyable read.

Though I did enjoy these characters for the most part.

It's even more fun if you imagine the characters like a DND party going on an epic campaign.

So here's the way I'd class them, following DND classes and classic alignments:
[note: lawful= follows a creed, law system or authority path of some sort. Chaotic=ungovernable. Good=acts in the best interest of others. Evil=acts in the best interest of self]

Nemain: Classic fighter. Battle master. Chaotic Evil.
Jinx: The murder hobo rogue. Arcane trickster. Neutral good.
Mikhail: Warlock. Hexblade. chaotic maybe neutral? Don't know enough about his motivations.
Eddy: Bard. College of lore. Chaotic good.
Kaysea: Cleric. Nature domain. Lawful good.
Andrei: Barbarian. Path of the beast. Lawful Good.
Magos: Warlock. Hexblade. Neutral good.

As a read, this was a solid 4 star read. But I'm bumping it up to 5 because I had fun with the DND thing and I was clearly amused at many points in the book, looking at my annotations.

Also what happens at 73% (page 217) should be worthy of a whole star in itself. 💅

Thank you so much to the author, who offered a free eaudio ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was indeed an improvement on book 1.

Book 1 read like Grey wanted to tell this sprawling epic but didn't know how to start it, so they just barfed up all the information on the page and hoped the reader could make sense of it and like it.

Book 2 actually had a plot. There was a goal, there were conflicts, there was a climax, there was a resolution. The cast list and relevant drama was more limited--still too many, imo, but an improvement on book 1. The subplots threatened to steal the stage, but Grey reined them in. In the end, they were balanced, just perhaps needed to be paced differently.

I don't like Nemain any more or less than I did in book 1. I don't love her but I also don't hate her. I hope Andre stays out of the picture. I wanted more Eddie until the epilogue; now I'm not sure what to think about him. Mikhail is interesting. I didn't get to know anyone else well enough to care much about them.

There's a lot of yapping. Just because it's dialogue doesn't mean it's showing and not telling; here it's often exposition with different punctuation. Less talk, more action, please.

Although I admit I don't always notice the action when it happens, and that's due to Janae's narration. I like it even less than before, for the same reasons. Does not suit Nemain, too steady, too placid, not enough energy or edge. I struggle not to tune out of the story, and it's because of the narration. It's boring. If Krys Janae's narrating, one star will always be discounted.

Okay, book 3, bring it on.

Book 2 in the series definitely improved on book 1! Though I found book 1 interesting enough to continue the series I didn’t find it grabbed me and I wasn’t overly connecting with the characters or world, however in A Shift in Fate I was a lot more engaged.

I really like the group of characters that the author has put together, they read like a real group of friends and this story showcased some of the relationships really well. I didn’t see the reveal about Eddie, though with his personality and behaviours I really should’ve seen that one coming 😅. The introduction of the new characters and prophecy have kept me interested in the next book.

Overall I gave this book 3.5⭐️ which I’ve rounded up. Though I did enjoy this book, and it’s a really nice quick read, there’s still elements of back story I feel I’m missing and I would like to see some more of some individual character dynamics. However if you want a fast paced urban fantasy with a lot of magical characters and creatures do keep on with the series.

I received a free copy of this book in return for a review. With thanks to NetGalley, the author and Victory Editing for this ARC.

I received this ARC at no cost from Booksirens.com and am providing an unbiased review.

This is the second book in the 'Lost Legacies' series (trilogy? Maybe more?) and after very much enjoying the first one, I knew that this would be just as good. Our regular characters are back, and just getting better. Character development is progressing well, with many fo the characters learning more about their powers. Our MC discovers things about her past and family. All while completing a favor from a demon-friend.

After reading this book, I feel like there will be only about three books in all for this series. The way the story is advancing, I just feel that the third book is going to wind up with the conclusion about things. Of course, I have my own thoughts as to what will happen and what will be revealed.

Truly enjoyed reading this story, and would like to see more maybe set in this world, or maybe on pre-quel stuff from some of the supporting characters.

My advice is: Buy it and read it. Make sure you read book one then dive in. So worth it! I was pulled so deeply into this book it was a full on stake out. Apparently Maddox Grey’s writing just has that effect on me!

Nemain and her family of friends continue to grow. The dangers and mysteries around them define them and their choices. Nemain grows a lot in this second installment even as the truth about herself and her fate come center stage.

I am still waiting for the relationship to heat up between Nemain and her Vampire roomie but his nephew gave me a small taste of what that would look like if the series ever takes us there. **Just my unhinged theory that there is more to come between them**

This series has an excellent foundation in book 1 and 2. I hope Grey has several more books up her sleeve because I’m here for it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.💫

Half a year following the events of the last book, Nemain is free from Sebatian at last and is still figuring out the dynamics of having Mikhail and the vampire kids in the fold.

Pele sends Nemain on a dangerous mission to the fae lands retrieve a mysterious child that could be the key to altering life as they know it. In exchange, it could give Nemain more leverage for her freedom.

I loved being back in this world with Nemain and her motley crew. The physical and verbal sparring was on point!

Eddie is mysterious and delightful and shares some life altering information. Mikhail’s and Jinx’s snark made me cackle. We meet so many new colorful characters and can’t wait to continue on the journey with Nemain as her responsibilities and duties shift as the fate of the realms is tied to her own.

Another great installment of this series! 4.25 stars

Book 2 Starts off a few months after the end of Book 1 and has enough recap to jump you right back in.

What I loved:
✨ Nemain
still one of the coolest FMCs I’ve ever encountered. She is so hardcore but then would do anything for those she cares about
✨ Such good humor and banter (sexual and platonic)
✨ a quest & new worlds
✨ new interesting and powerful characters along with a bigger role for some of the lovable side characters from book 1
✨ plot twists
✨ laugh-out-loud moments

Why not 5 stars?
🔥 one of the characters annoyed me a bit, and I’m glad to see hints that they won’t have such a big role in coming books
🔥 I feel like the spice wasn’t really needed in this one just because of who was involved, but that’s okay! I have a feeling it is only going to get better :)

I can’t wait to get to book 3, excited to see how the author tackles the POV change!

Thank you for providing me with an ARC copy of this book. I loved this as much as the first book in the series. The story flows on from book 1 but you still get little reminders of what happened which I liked as there’s lots of different information to remember about the magic system and the qualities of different supernatural beings. The story progressed really nicely and in the same way as book 1 you get lots of resolutions whilst still progressing in the storyline and discovering new mysteries. I still love the characters as much as I did in book 1 and love the development they get in this book and how each character has their own story which is slowly explored throughout. I would love to continue with this series to find out what happens to different characters and how the story will stretch even further. I flew through this just as much as I did the first one and would definitely recommend this series.

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from BookSirens for giving my two cents. Oooh...the drama continues and Neiman is I the forefront again. It's been months since her encounter with the Circle and Sébastians death that she's hoping for a break. Unfortunately Pele asks a favour....a young fae boy with immense power has shown up and the village was destroyed Neiman and her crew decide to search for the boy. What she didn't expect was encountering Fae with devourer magic....like hers but how? Her new friend Eddie has given insight to her family history and she had an aunt still alive but how? So many secrets, so much drama and the seers visions are starting to come to light but at what cost? Can Neiman protect the child from thr bad guys and will she be able to handle the truth about who and what she really is? Great book...when's the next one??

Nemain’s story continues in “A Shift in Fate,” the second book in Maddox Grey’s Lost Legacies fantasy book series.

I was intrigued by this world and these characters before I started reading this book, but by the end, I was completely and utterly invested!

So much happens in this book - it’s very action packed and the plot twists made me want to scream, cry, or throw my kindle at the wall (I didn’t, but I was tempted!)

I feel like Nemain had a lot of character development in this one - she really matured, and even though I think she’ll always be her violent, murderous self, I understand her motives and thought process way better now.

Also, the banter between all of the characters was absolutely top notch - especially any conversation that involved Eddie. This series truly embraces the found family trope, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!

"A child of both worlds with eyes of change. Born in darkness but pulled to the light."

Nemain and her merry band of misfits are back; they are going to the fae realm this time! Their mission- is to rescue a powerful fae child. Their journey is mysterious, intriguing, dangerous, and thrilling as secrets come to light, old and new, in this incredible realm, and our characters struggle with their powers.
The world-building is fascinating, the characters are evolving, and the storyline is captivating. This book has everything - action, adventure, prophecies, and a touch of romance. I enjoyed it immensely and can't wait for more. The story is filled with suspense and action, and the unexpected twists kept me on the edge of my seat. At times, my emotions were so mixed up that I felt like screaming, crying, or throwing my Kindle at the wall, but eventually, I reconsidered.

Second book in the series that definitely doesn’t not have second book syndrome (IYKYK). I had high hopes for this book (and whole series if I am honest) and Maddox Grey exceeded all of my expectations.

This story picks up when Nemain is relishing in the glory of the freedom of no longer having her ex looming over her every dream and lurking around every corner. When a fae child, with powers very similar to those that Nemain has been hiding her whole life, somehow ends up in a village that is not his own and it is destroyed as a devourer would destroy, questions are being raised.

Secrets old, new and forgotten now revealed, family ties once lost now the possibility of revival, self-sacrifice, action packed with plot twists you won’t see coming and contagiously witty banter that will have you entranced. On to book three to satisfy my obsession!!

🎧 Audiobook Review

A Shift in Fate (Lost Legacies 2) by Maddox Grey
Narrated by Krys Janae
Greymalkin Press, 16th November 2022

This second book in the Lost Legacies series is a fun fantasy packed with fae, demons, werewolves, magic, and lots of action! Krys Janae makes a whole host of interesting characters appealing, and Maddox Grey's plot is littered with unfurling secrets and side stories.

Nemain, our feline shifter FMC, takes off on a trek to find a lost boy, complete with her band of pals. Werewolf, and love interest, Andre tags along, but the mission is fraught with danger. The discoveries made and banter between the friends are highlights and balance the danger of the very mission!

Pick up this series if you enjoy fantasy romance, fun and banter with friends, tons of supernatural folk, and a series to get your teeth into.

3.5 stars/5 stars

Compared to the first book, the first half of this one was a bit too slow for my taste, but it picks up the pace and it got really interesting. I'm glad some characters come back and I really liked how new characters were introduced and how they fit in the whole dynamic of this colorful group. Mostly, I like the fact that there are no loose ends left.

I got to learn a lot of things about our beloved main character and her friends and while the stakes were high before, they are even higher now. Personally, I enjoyed seeing how the fae realms are compared to the human one.

Many plot twists, but beautifully integrated in the story. The characters, the world building, the magic system, they are all complex and beautifully written, without them being overwhelming.

I liked this book. It continues on the story of Nemain and her band of misfit friends. Pele asks Nemain to go into the Fae realm to find a boy; a boy her other friend Kaysea has had visions about. As sure as the sun rises in the morning, they are met with enemies and fights entail.

Nemain does grow in this book and learns a lot of information about herself that she has to come to terms with. She has to cut ties with someone even though it hurts. She is working on building a relationship with her magic and how to control it so it doesn't cause disaster everywhere she goes. We learn about a handful of more beings/creatures and get a little information about them. I am hoping the next books will add to that information. I am also looking forward to a certain relationship growing.

A Shift in Fate (Lost Legacies, #2)
by Maddox Grey
The audio edition of this book allows the reader to have imitate connection with the book. The voice of the narrator is inviting and full of depth.
The book can stand alone, as i have not read the prior book. I found the idea and intrigue of the story absorbing. The internal and external conflict of the species has provided a very compelling conflict, as fae, deamons, shape shifters and vampires work for control of the various worlds.
The main character has a mystery in her story, that is slowly exposed over the novel. She is able to learn her own history, and how it connects to the conflicts of her world.
The supporting characters have their own mystery and intrigue that add to the elements of mystery, and suspense.

Just WOW!! I love the from Novella (book 0) to book 2 the plot and stories are so intense and unique that is keeps you engaged and guessing! I am So Excited for the next installment and I secretly hope a writers dream occurs and she knocks out two books and one Novella by the end of next year! The characters are phenomenal and so interesting that you can’t help get caught up in each character individually but Maddox Grey is truly talented because even with all the characters and storylines the main characters are never lost and the story isn’t overwhelming but engages and enthralls all your senses and thought and emotions!

Book two and I am still as hooked as I was with the first book. Nemain and co are back and this time they are going to the fae realm to rescue a powerful fae child who is in danger from devourer fae. Their journey is mysterious and intriguing, exciting and thrilling as secrets come to light, old and new in this incredible realm and our characters struggles with their dark powers. The world building continues to enthral and our characters continue to grow and develop and the storyline has you hooked from the get go. Action, adventure, prophesies and a little romance, I am thoroughly enjoying this series and look forward to more.

And the story continues! Oh wow, I did not expect A Shift in Fate to be this good. It was so easy to fall back into this world and immerse myself in this story again. The plot was a little slow but I was blown away by the deep character development so many of the characters showed. Some amazing new characters were introduced and I loved getting to know them. Some of the magic and physics of the world got a bit confusing at some points but overall I like the unique magic system. The audiobook was clear and easy to listen to. I can't wait to continue this adventure in the next book.

Nemain and her motley crew of misfits are back. The stakes are higher and there is never a dull moment where these characters are concerned. Prophecies are revealed, new characters are introduced, and loyalties are tested at every turn.

I loved the development of several relationships in this book, platonic and otherwise. While the overarching plot has plenty of twist and turns, the characters really drive the story forward. I did guess at a few of the reveals, but still loved watching it unfold the way it did.

I can’t wait to see what comes next as Nemain works to protect her family at all costs. And maybe lets a certain broody vampire in…

Wow!!! Book 2 did not disappoint. I was drawn in to the action, adventure, journey, love, loss, friendships, danger and more.
The author did a great job with book 2, picking right up where book 1 ended.
I loved learning more about each of the characters, watching them grow individually and as a group. I had so much trouble stopping listening when I had to do things, lol.
The narrator did a phenomenal job bring the story to life and keeping me captivated the whole time.
I can't wait for book 3.

This is the second book I’m reading from Maddox and I completely devoured it. I cannot explain how much I love the character Nemain and her band of misfit, family and friends. The banter is Chef in the tension is so sizzling hot.. just when you think you know what is going to happen, you are swept away down another path you didn’t see coming, but enjoy it regardless. I cannot wait to finish reading books in this series. I enjoy every minute of it. I am officially an arc reader And I couldn’t be happier!

*AUDIOBOOK REVIEW*
(2x speed)

I'm really enjoying this series! It is fast paced with lots of action, unique magic, and tons of mythical creatures/beings. By tons, I mean like, all of them! Vampires, demons, dragons, valkyrie, shifters, seelie and unseelie fae, magic animal guardians, mermaids, you get the gist. As with the first book, the narration sounds a little automated at times, but it's actually a lot better in this book. She does great with the dialog and is pretty good at differentiating characters.

I like where this series is going and it's done really well holding my attention. There are a lot of side characters but not so many that you can't keep track of them. The third book in the series actually features one of the new characters from book two, and is a little shorter than the first two books. I'm interested to see where this goes, and to see if each book follows the same pattern of a different POV. There are currently 5 books total, but there is a 6th book that will be released on August 13th. I have the ARC so I'll be able to report on that as well. It appears there will be 7 to complete the series.
