The Keeper's Runes was an interesting prequel to The Originals of Grimm Academy series. Each book seems to be a standalone, so I hope we'll see Nikky, Rowan, Layla and Althaus appearing in future books, even just as cameos.

There was a lot of story to cram in here, and I think Lyra Forger succeeded, although I wouldn't have minded if this was a full book instead of a novella.

Nikky finds herself at Grimm Academy after an incident where she attacked another student, but she doesn't feel very welcome there until she meets Layla, her one and only friend, and Rowan, her future love interest.

Strange things are happening at the academy, students are getting murdered and nobody seems to be doing anything about it, so it's up to Nikky to figure it out. Does it have something to do with her arrival? And who is behind it?

I like Nikky, but sometimes she needs things spelled out for her. I'm going to try to be vague here so I don't spoil anything, but there was the incident at the beginning, then something similar happened at Grimm Academy, but Nikky didn't put two and two together until a completely different character told her that's what happened near the end of the book.

I was so sure that after the cafeteria thing she'd start thinking, but nope, not a single thought went in that direction. And it's okay because she had lots of different things to deal with, but I thought that was a missed opportunity.

There were things that weren't completely explained, like how runes work, but I'm assuming we'll get to that in the next books so I'm not too bothered.

We also don't know much about Nikky, her family, so I wish that was explored more, especially if she doesn't show up again in the series.

The romance was cute, I like Rowan and I think he and Nikki are a good fit together. There's also an extra epilogue you can download which surprised me, because it wasn't all cute and cuddly.

So yeah, it was fun, on I go to House of Ydril now.

this feels like a fever dream. i kept asking myself, did i miss something? did i accidentally skip a page or a chapter? bc there are so many holes in this storyline. also like zero time spent on world building so the reader has no clue what’s going on or the significance of what happening or being said.
i could keep going…

This felt like I wrote it and i'm not a writer. It's burden i think is that this story needs to be longer to really dig into the nuances, otherwise you get what it is, a very surface level high schoolish (but college age) tale about a magical school for fae, vampires, and lycans. it was fine. HOWEVER, i liked the characters and I think i'd read more given the opportunity.

This book needed a few more drafts and some hefty world-building. So many scenes that could’ve been great were just skipped over, implied, or fade to black, even the big important parts. It felt like lazy writing on the author’s part to not flesh them out and show us what happens. Not even for the final scene with the big bad evil guy. The author just skipped right over everything good. I finished it, but not a book I’ll ever recommend or am even glad to have read.

It’s also marketed as being “spicier than your favorite jalapeños” with explicit sex senes featuring bdsm and kink when in fact there is only one scene at the end which is only a fade to black scene. That being said, they are cute together, so all hope isn’t lost. Hopefully the next books are better on the spiciness front, but I’m not hooked enough to bother.

Lyra Forger's "The Keeper's Runes" is an intoxicating blend of dark fantasy, tantalizing romance, and heart-pounding adventure set within the enigmatic walls of Grimm Academy. This novel captivates from the very beginning, weaving a tale that is as rich in magical lore as it is in the intricate dynamics of love and power.

Nikky, our protagonist, is a fae marked by her lack of Runes, making her an outcast in a world where magic is both currency and curse. Her journey from an isolated existence to the heart of Grimm Academy is fraught with danger, dark secrets, and an unexpected quest for survival among the Originals—beings of immense power and mystery.

Forger masterfully crafts a narrative that is as compelling as it is visually stunning. The descriptions of Grimm Academy and its inhabitants are vivid, creating an immersive experience that transports readers into a realm where the line between friend and foe is as blurred as that between love and hate.

The romance that simmers between Nikky and the enigmatic shifter is executed with a delicious tension that fans of Roxie Ray and Sarah J. Maas will adore. The dynamic between them is a fiery dance of attraction and resistance, underscored by the thrilling uncertainty of their fates. Forger's approach to their relationship is a testament to the complexity of desire, weaving elements of danger, destiny, and raw emotion into a tapestry that readers will find utterly irresistible.

"The Keeper's Runes" is not just a tale of magical academia; it is a story of self-discovery, resilience, and the unyielding power of connection. Nikky's journey is one of profound transformation, from an outcast to a key player in the academy's tangled web of politics and power. Her development is both relatable and inspiring, making her a standout character in a genre replete with strong female protagonists.

With its dual POV, the novel offers a panoramic view of its world, enriching the narrative with diverse perspectives and deepening the emotional resonance of the story. The elements of mythology and dark fairytale woven throughout the plot add layers of complexity and intrigue, elevating the novel from a mere fantasy romance to a sophisticated exploration of themes such as identity, legacy, and the nature of power.

"The Keeper's Runes" is a spellbinding masterpiece that enthralls with its rich storytelling, complex characters, and a riveting plot that ensures readers are hooked from the first page to the last. It stands as a formidable entry into the fantasy romance genre, promising an unforgettable adventure for those brave enough to enter the world of Grimm Academy.

I genuinely had no idea what was happening, half the time. The world building was just not there and things simply weren’t explained in clear ways. I felt like the relationship went from acquaintances to friends to “I love him” about as smoothly as a manual dump truck from the 60’s. To be more clear, it was clunky, jerky, a bit stressful, and definitely awkward.

Also, I just have to add a note:

The book starts off with a couple of bold claims on the trigger warning page at beginning.

“You better have a glass of milk nearby because this book is spicier than your favorite jalapeño poppers. Enjoy at your own risk!”

“But if you’re ready to indulge in some steamy scenes, get ready for a ride that’s hotter than a ghost pepper and over than a bowl of chili with extra jalapeños.”

“This book is not for the prudes, but for those who like it sizzling, it’s the perfect read.”

I— I’m a bit lost. What? I read the book, I swear I did. Did I not read it correctly? I’m confused. The *only* scene that even comes close to needing a heads up about is literally 96% through the book (thanks Kindle for the official percentage). It lasts like 3 or 4 pages. Yes, it’s more than a fade to black. I just don’t see “the romance will leave you feeling like you just took a dip in a hot tub full of bubbles”.

I usually applaud warning/trigger lists but this one left me feeling like I read a different book than I was told I was reading.

She never planned on finding herself fighting for her life among the Originals of Grimm Academy.

Nikky is the only fae without runes, and this has made her an outcast.

One day, Nikky finally snapped and broke Ydril's Law and ended up at Grimm Academy, the last place she ended up to ever be. It's the most prestigious academy for the Originals. Soon, she realizes that there's someone out to destroy her, stop her from fitting in.

Quickly, secrets start to unfold as Nikky finds herself surrounded, unable to escape the darkness, danger, and a hot shifter that she can't take her mind off of.

Nikky finds that there's a strange thrumming in her chest that she can't explain. She has both a vampire and a shifter protecting her, and yet she knows that she may not make it out alive, and she wants more than anything to make it out alive.

Roxie Ray, Sarah J. Maas fans will find this book irresistible.

Tropes: Standalone/No Cliffhanger, Alpha, Strong FMC, Sweet MMC, Dual POV, Touch Her and Die, Fated Mates, Slow Burn, Dark Fairytale World, Kidnapping, Mythology, Forced Proximity.

Can Nikky find all the secrets that haunt her? Will she let herself fall in love with the hot shifter?

Enter the world of the mysterious Grimm Academy. Don't wait and read it NOW!

The Keeper's Runes is such an intriguing prequel to The Originals of Grimm Academy series. What I found really interesting is that each book seems to be its own book and can be read as a standalone. This means that there is a chance that we will get the chance to see Nikky, Rowan, Layla, and even Althaus again in future books, even if they are just appearing as cameos.

Lyra Forger packed a lot of story into this book and man did she ever succeed in her mission to tell a great story packed into a novella, although I wish that it had been a full novel rather then just a novella.

When Nikky suddenly finds herself at Grimm Academy after she attacks another student. But, she finds that she isn't very welcome at the academy until she meets Layla. Soon, she finds Layla is her one and only friend, and Rowan, Rowan, is her future love interest.

Nikky watches strange things happen at the academy. Students are getting murdered and for reasons she can't understand, there doesn't seem to be anyone doing anything about it, so Nikky takes it upon herself to investigate the murders and figure it all out. She wonders if it has something to do with her arrival. And who is really behind it?

I loved Nikky. She is so unique, but I didn't like how absent-minded she seemed to be at times and how she needed things to be spelled out for her at times. I am trying not to give to much away here, but at the start of the book something happens at Grimm Academy, but Nikky fails to put it all together until someone else told her that's what really happened close to the end of the book.

There were moments that I was so sure she was going to actually start stopping and thinking, like after the cafeteria incident, but oh no, she doesn't stop and think, no thought in that direction. But, I think that has to do with the fact that she has so much going on and she is dealing with a lot, still it was such a missed opportunity.

I wish there were things that were explained that weren't like how the runes really worked, but hopefully, we get into that in the next book.

Hopefully, we get to know Nikky and her family better. It would have been nice to know a bit more about where she came from and what her family was like and who they were.

I liked the romance in this one. It was really rather cute, I really rather like Rowan and Nikky together. They are a good fit. And then there's the epilogue you can download. It was a nice surprise to me, and it changed it all. It wasn't all cute and cuddly like the rest of the book.

This was a great book, and oh, such a great book. I can't wait to read House of Ydril now.

(I got this book through a bookfunnel and this is a response to the author, which i also sent in more rough form in an email)

So i reached chapter 3 of keepers runes and i dont think its a novel for me sadly. The Nikky's character background has been really roughly explained and i would want to know what actually happened at that mentioned party, cuz it feels like i started reading halfway through the book. I would also like to know more about these academias that were mentioned, maybe it was explained later or something idk. The invitation to the academy was sudden but it was a nice place for longer exposition part which kinda was there a bit, but the description of the insides of academy could be longer including background on the building, how it was made, by who, what is the lore behind it. Its also very straight to the point with romance thread, it doesnt hide there will be something going on with Rowan. I would enjoy more if there was many "candidates" by that i mean people that main character builds a nice friendly relationship and then it slowly grows with one (or more who knows) into something more as its more satisfying for me, you can also do the same with one character which is harder, but possible. There was also too many curses in some places, making the impact of them much smaller. Like damn yo, you can use curses all you want but its nice too set a tiny limiter on those so they can be punchy! Also i had a problem with what i call "wattpadisms" aka a long descriptions of what character feels inside with monologue or way too long descriptions of some space that doesnt affect the worldbuilding even so slightly. Also since its like the most prestigious academia (even though its only urban fantasy setting) there should be more visible yet subtle differences not only in speaking, behavior but also in cuisines and such. The book based on first two chapters have logical sense, the wording is okay and if i were a fan of that type of storywriting, centered more or characters than the world itself, i may considered giving you a 5-6 and compared to some other bookfunnel books i took without reading a synopsis, just based on cover and title alone, its from better ones. However compared to books i normally read i dont think it would get that high of a note thus the score is the one you can see.

Nikky has always been an outcast. She has a habit of finding trouble and has never been one to back down. So, when she finally snapped, breaking a law, the last thing she expected was to be taken to the most prestigious house within the academy. Vampires, Fae, and shifters abound, but she is without runes and without power. What chance does she have against these people? But, there is something in the forbidden corridor that is calling to her.

This book was an impulse purchase found on one of my book pages or another. I genuinely don't know which one or when it happened, but I flicked through my owned books on my kindle and stopped on this one. It is a YA fantasy book that has the potential to turn spicy. There is a male with a claim, but there hasn't been any outright sexual acts so far. Either way is fine with me, but some people like the warning.

This is a prequal to a series that I haven't read so I don't know how important it is to start with this book versus book one. I will say that this book is absolutely packed with important information that I am not sure how a series would be able to start without. It shows how three characters meet and relationships are developed of both friendship and more. It shows how powers are gained as well as a dip into one of the character's pasts. These things may be addressed in book one, but I am not sure.

The story has a bit of mystery to it starting with what is in the forbidden wing to who is keeping the hidden item hidden, what the item is, and who is killing students. The author does a great job of casting blame around to keep who is behind things a secret, but I was able to guess correctly, which pleases me. I am curious how this series will turn out since the book, obviously, end with a lot of strings.

The premise was really interesting. The way it was written was done well-enough, but there were a few things that I wished were more fleshed - especially if this is a prequel book.

The story starts after an incident and Nicky is being taken from her school. It vaguely tells you what the incident was, and glosses over the full ramifications of Nicky not really being in trouble.

I'm all for starting a story when something happens and not leading up to how the story begins...but, I felt like I was missing a whole first chapter.

The world-building is there somewhat. I'm not really sure how to explain that. I didn't realize how much more information would have been great until near the end.

Also, for someone being taken to a new academy based on Originals, and the Grimm brothers - there was no information given about that. At all. Even the headmaster is called The Pied Piper and has a flute (original Piper's flute?), but that's all the information you get about it.

Information on the runes was also lacking. There was something towards the end about different sets of numbers of runes, and the Keeper has all of them. But, again, even sprinkling this information throughout would have been great.

The slow burn was good, and done well. The mystery villain with the vague headmaster and two professors had me automatically snapping to the first Harry Potter - very Snape.

Anyway, it was okay. But I don't think I'll be interested in the rest of the series since it appears to be further standalone. Nicky is definitely not done, and I have questions.

Nikky, her new nickname, has been held prisoner at an academy for having no runes and attacking another. She is a fae and is being led to her death…or so she believes. Turns out, the Professor takes her to Grimm Academy to be reformed. Why? When she arrives, her first class is a doozy and is run by a scary vampire. She meets Layla, who is also an outcast. When another attacks her with mind control, the heir and alpha, Rowen, saves her. Why? Used to being on her own, it comes as a huge shock when the Pied Piper assigns Rowen to her as a bodyguard. She keeps feeling strange urges to approach a certain part of the academy, which is evil. For when they do approach, it attacks and almost kills Rowen. The feelings and desires toward Rowen must stop; she has to protect him. So, another gets assigned to her and it is driving Rowen mad. Soon, things start to change; an explanation opens her memories. The Keeper’s Runes are compelling her forward to them, but someone else is out to steal them and to murder her…why? When all the answers come forward, it will be life-changing; but lives will be on the line…can she save everyone? Especially, her fated?

If Lyra Forger starts another sentence with "So," I swear to God, I will light my Kindle on fire....

You know that feeling when you're in 5 university classes, and each one has a 5000-word paper as a final and all the papers are due on the exact same day and you have all these ideas and all this research, but the paper ends up half baked and then comments on it from your professor says it "reads like a stream of consciousness."? Ya, that's what this book is like. The plot is virtually non-existent. The pacing is torturous. The romance is not believable, and the characters are shallow. I get that it's a prequel and a novella, but the job of a prequel is to lay the foundations for the books that come after it. All this book does is leave you with more questions. It does a terrible job of introducing us to the magic system, the world of Grimm Academy, and the characters. It took me until I was 80% of the way in to figure out that these characters are indeed over 20, and I wasn't reading YA. This book is juvenile in all the worst ways. Thank god it was short. I will not be reading the rest of the series.

P.S. This feels like really bad Harry Potter fanfic.

2/5 ⭐️

forced proximity, touch her and you’re dead, enemies to lovers?

this was a lot of things for sure and wow, such an interesting plot, unfortunately not the best execution there.

it had vampires, werewolves, faes, a little bit of everything and a huge plot twist at the end. i was genuinely surprised.

nikky is betrayed from a very young age without even knowing that had happened. for years she had been feeling empty as if she wasn’t good enough for the people around her or even as a student at the academy. after unfortunate events she is forced to leave her previous academy and join an even more prestigious one. unfortunately, she is once again not accepted there as she wishes she was when starting a clean slate. mean girls are everywhere and apparently they don’t go away even when the hottest guy in school stands by your side.

with that being said, the enemies to lovers is strong on this one and the fall is such a slowburn.

i genuinely enjoyed reading this, as funny as it was, i just wish that the plot wasn’t as rushed and once again, that i was let in a bit more and explored their feelings before moving on to the next series of events.

I picked this book up for free on Amazon the plot sounded interesting and honestly I only had to read the quote "It's like Harry Potter for women who like their books spicy!" I was excited to start reading this it was quick read it was only 122 pages so i guess that means it was not really surprising that I felt like I was missing information that I would of liked because you can only cover so much info In the pages. I felt like the book started part way through a storyline and I would of loved more information on the world and the runes because I found them interesting I liked the main characters the slow burn romance I felt was well done although I don’t no that I would of said it was a 🌶️🌶️🌶️ book as it was suggested it felt low on the spice I liked that the book did not end on a cliffhanger. I think my younger self would of probably enjoyed this more so maybe I just read it at the wrong time

This prequel offers a captivating dive into a magical world where Nikky Anykhai, a fae-blooded protagonist lacking magical runes, navigates the complexities of Grimm Academy.

The plot is engaging and original, weaving elements of mystery and fantasy into an interesting narrative.

Warning, it does contain swearing and sex scenes with little justification.

Forger’s writing style is vivid and descriptive, immersing readers in the enchanting world of the academy.

The characters are well-developed and interactions provide emotional depth, while the tension with the antagonist adds intrigue.

However, the pacing in certain sections varies.

The climax feels rushed, leaving plot points lacking clarity.

Also, a deeper exploration of subplots, such as Layla’s background, could enhance the narrative.

Despite these issues, The Keepers Runes is an entertaining read for fans of fantasy and romance.

“Fun to me means lying around with no one actively trying to murder me.”

Prequel

I was hoping for a cool academy piece with smut based upon Grimm fairy tale characters. But no.

It's a standard urban fantasy, I think, with a Fae who likes to be called Nikky and who spouts random expletives in her sentences. When she is caught by a professor Zahur and questioned, her response is amusing: "“ I was so [ ] sure he was talking about me attacking Prince Shovel Face and Princess Dead Eyes. ”

There is some bullying, and Nikky finds her true love, but he doesn't interest me in the least. Rowan needs some personality.

The magic system is also somewhat undefined. Somehow fae need runes, but beyond that I have no clue.

And there is a climactic showdown....
To be honest, the story has potential but the prequel was forgettable.

I found this book a bit confusing. We are plunged into a tale with no explanations to our main characters beginnings and the plot seems to jump around a fair bit. I feel it needs smoothing out as it has the bones of a good story with some excellent characters.
Yes any book from now on about an occult academy will be compared to Harry potter but this one is way more adult and darker.
The sexual attraction seems to jump in very suddenly and clumsily but it was understandable. I just feel with some honing down this could go from a three star book to a five star. It will be interesting to see how future books pan out by this author.
I was given a copy of the book by voracious readers only for an honest review.I always give an honest review.

okay, it's not bad. i will be continuing to read the series because the concept is great and I'm interested in what's going to happen.

my issue with novellas/prequels that are short, is that the storyline in it tends to feel rushed. there's no detail in the progress of the characters and the story, which yes, is the whole idea of a prequel to just explain how something starts, but I still can't get passed how rushed everything felt.

a chapter or 2 goes over the span of months and it goes from characters hating each other to being in love?? like? idk probably just me, and like I said I will read the next book and hope that since it's a regular size that the story feel better paced!

Nikky is our MFC who is used to being an outcast in school. She is a fae without runes meaning she doesn't have magic and is an outcast from everyone. When she is expelled from Faelyn Academy and sent to a new school she is given a second chance and we hear of Keeper's Runes. She gets the attention of the strongest shifter at the school and makes friends with the other outcasts at the school. Nikky is drawn to the restricted area at the academy. Strange things are happening at the academy. You'll need to read this fantastic book to find out what happens!

I absolutely LOVED the chemistry between Rowan and Nikky. I would be so happy if they show up in any other books in this series (I'm pretty sure they are standalones or at least mostly standalones, but I just live them so much!!) the characters were likable, the story compelling enough to stay up late just to finish it! and the cover is also very beautiful! ^-^ I very much enjoyed this story, definitely going to start reading The Heart Bond (prequel to House of Lilith) tomorrow, or rather when I wake up later lol!!

The plot was alright. But the trigger warning was false advertising.

"You better have a glass of milk nearby because this book is spicier than your favorite jalapeño poppers. Enjoy at your own risk! Hey there, fellow spicy book lover! Before you dive into this tantalizing tale, we need to give you a fair warning. This book is meant for women who like their stories with a little extra oomph, so if you're not into explicit sex scenes and mature themes, then you might want to stick to your grandma's crossword puzzles."

When in fact there was no spicy scene!

Love this book it was a mixture of Wednesday and Vampire Academy and Winx. I brought this book on my kindle for £0.80 which was a win but I was skeptic to why it was so cheap for something that I would like and I’m glad I did because it was amazing, I loved the characters and for the book being so small in length it was a Lovley story, great friendships formed and character development and the story moved in a good pace the last chapter jumped ahead for me abit to quick but it’s the only bad thing I can say so this is an overall top tier read especially if you don’t want a lengthy book.

A warm-up for potentially great things

Prequels are usually warm-ups to a much larger story, and you can tell that's what The Keeper's Runes is by the way it's written. While it does a good job of building up a plot for the main character and establishes some primary relationships important to the main character's development and the world setting, it still felt like Nikky was overall shrouded in mystery, making it difficult to really bond with her. Hopefully, the rest of the series improves on building her into a relatable character with a deeper personality.

This book just didn’t work for me I was sure I was missing stuff but even going back and re reading seem it wasn’t, the. Reading other reviews confirmed I wasn’t the only one feeling this way.

It was a quick and easy read but I need more details. The plot was t bad and I know as a prequel it is to introduce some info to get use ready for the real story but I was still lost. It did have some action which was my saving grace and a little spice not much which I liked. This is to be a school mates romance and it does have potential.

I felt like this story could be so much more if it weren't trying to prove something by overusing the word "fucking" and having sex be so much the focus. The characters and the story could easily fill up a much longer book without the flotsam and jetsam. I would love to see this story revised to smooth out the rough edges and let Nikky's snark shine without resorting to gratuitous language and sex.

Interesting quick read to whet the appetite for the remainder of the series (I assume - as that's what it did for me). Nikky and Rowan as a couple are kinda hot, kinda rushed, but still steamy. Fae, vampires, supernaturals are aplenty at the Grimm Academy - a place filled with mysteries and mayhem and alluring backroom deals. Kept my interest right to the final paragraph.

This was awful. The idea behind it seemed really interesting and I don’t even mind that it switched between two different POVs, but it was one of the worst written books I’ve ever read. The pacing was extremely unrealistic and the characters felt very shallow. The MC treats everyone like garbage, because she is this chip on her shoulder. Nothing is really explained and there’s barely any setting or character description in it. If it wasn’t so short, this would’ve been a DNF for me.

WTF

There was so much missing from this book. There were so many holes, no world building. No backstory to the love story. It felt so half assed like the author didn’t even try to put in backstory. This was painful to read I just wanted to speed through it. It made no sense really the love story was wack and then when it was time for the smut it got cut off! Ugh yea this one was not for me

I thought this book was good! I liked that it wrapped up the storyline while still leaving room for more books. It was very fast paced, a quick read, but I did feel the quick nature of the book took from us being able to fully understand the characters, their motives, and the world they live in. The description said this book was spicy but I can confirm that is entirely inaccurate. It is giving YA but was a fun quick read.
