Members of the growing middle class in Victorian England, the Mathison family had a comfortable life. Suddenly going from riches to rags, however, is not what the Mathison sisters expected!
First their father disappears. Then a suspicious document disinherits the girls and leaves everything to a mysterious woman claiming to be their diseased father’s wife! The house, the money, it's all gone! Now they re forced to reinvent themselves in order to track down the “black widow” who has stripped them of everything.
Along the way, they make some new friends, including a somewhat annoying lawyer with unruly hair, startling blue eyes and a lopsided grin. As the sisters become involved in bizarre and perilous situations, they also discover that a taste of romance can make even the worst circumstances a little sweeter.
