First off, I want to thank Miranda for the early copy of ACOMAM and always giving me all the exclusive deets. Next, omg my heart has been ripped out. In the best possible way of course. Joy has shown she knows how to write a cliffhanger, and this book is no different. I could not put this romantasy down, and I never want to leave this world.
ACOMAM follows Allesia who, running from an awful situation, finds her self in the fae realm. She discovers things about magic and realms she had no idea about, and while meeting new friends, she also finds herself and truly grows. Rainer is a fae prince shrouded in mystery who does not understand this pull towards a human girl and has a million problems stacked against them. These two have their ups and downs and have moments where they face them better than others, but neither of them can deny the pull they feel towards one another.
The character growth in this book was top notch. Alessia went through so much, and she had her moments where she broke down, but ultimately she knew she needed to keep going and began to recognize her strength, as well as realize that it’s okay to not always be strong. I could not get over how she kept standing up, and how she wasn’t doing it on her own. The people around her, who barely knew her, kept on supporting her and showing her that she was strong—albeit in a roundabout way at times.
Speaking of the people around Alessia, the side characters were absolutely incredible! Ugh I need more. Ken is for sure my favorite. I love him so much, but I can also not get over Das Celyn and Viv. Joy wrote such dynamic side characters that not only supported the main character’s story, but they also had their own rich story that I want to know more about.
The world building was absolutely phenomenal. I loved how Joy slowly showed more and more and gave little hints that foreshadowed more parts at play. I can’t wait to see how everything is expanded in book 2, as well as all the new places!
A Curse of Malice and Mercy is an absolutely incredible romantasy that I highly recommend. This one is for those who befriend the monster, not fear it. It’s for the ones who can see their self in another tortured soul or appreciate others’ growth and how hard it can be at times. ACOMAM has magic, fae, shifters, enemies to (maybe) lovers, and so much more. Now excuse me while I go try to recover from the incredible cliffhanger I just read, and try to patiently (not so patiently) wait until book 2.
