My thanks to NetGalley and VIZ Media LLC for an eARC of this book to read and review.

Ok, TRIGGER WARNING follows which will be spoiler-y.

The fine line between OTT "funny" self denigration by the idol Tamon has been crossed. There is a scene where he is incredibly depressed and standing on the roof of his apartment building. The MC h clearly believes he is going to jump. She runs up and prevents him from doing so. The entire time I was hoping it was just a misunderstanding, he was up there for the view, etc.

No, no, he was up there to jump off, because he thinks she is going to switch from having HIM as her favorite idol who she 1,000% obsessively supports to a different idol in his band.

He then goes DARK with indicating that he doesn't want her to even THINK about other people and without her in his life, he would just DIE.

He then manipulates her to get her to do what he wants by putting on the idol charm to take advantage of her obsession over his idol-self.

She realizes what he is doing, and is trying to draw a boundary line and he completely ignores it and she 1) allows it and 2) continues to enable him.

This is NOT healthy and has more than stepped over the line it was flirting with in the previous two books. It decided to say "Hold my Pocari Sweat" and VAULTED over the line, sprinting away and leaving it in the dust.

I'm not even going to get into how each of the idols in the band are really just fake and twisted mentally and emotionally. They all need mental help. The fans too.

I DO want to read the next volume, as I am hoping the storyline can be saved, that she stiffens up her backbone, that he gets mental help for the depression and self-loathing he has, that they can learn how to have a healthy relationship once they are mentally and emotionally mature enough to do so.

I do love her fierce protectiveness of Tamon, but she was right when she realized she needed to kick the baby bird out of the nest. More like, she needed to deliver the baby bird to a therapist who could help the baby bird, as she is not equipped to do so. Also, the lack of communication and misunderstanding trope was wearing thin in this one.

2, I have high hopes for the next one but this may not be for everyone, stars.

3.5 stars — our third idol is introduced, and he also has a personality disorder… this is without a doubt the quirk of this manga…

[CW: suicidal thoughts]

As Tamon is B-side himself over the upcoming competition for the new centre of F/ACE, Ori is strangely intent on finding out what Kinoshita’s relationship to her idol is. Which would be easier to figure out if she knew that herself…

I think I have pinpointed my issue with Yuki Shiwasu’s style and it’s that she doesn’t know when to turn off the throttle. She’s going for the theatre of the absurd, I get that, but sometimes a little bit less would be a lot more.

Lots of Tamon’s lunacy is really good - him being so thoughtful, yet insecure, that he shows up with a bag of sugar in lieu of sweets because he didn’t want to pick the wrong one is the good version of all this. That’s the energy that makes the series interesting to me.

Ori’s vague attempts at being a rival for Kinoshita’s affections while he’s actually a loud-mouthed bore that she can’t stand are also a decent counterpoint and the conclusion to the big completion is both a nice surprise and amusingly makes Ori seem nicer by showing that another member of F/ACE is an even bigger jerk.

There’s finally some fun little semi-romantic moments sprinkled in, too, as Kinoshita just might begin to be caring about every side of Tamon, including his very worst aspects, and seeing him as a person and not a god (although there’s plenty of that still stuffed in there).

It’s a decent volume of a decent story, minus one awful gag of a suicide attempt that really just doesn’t work in the slightest. I’m not saying you can’t make jokes of that nature, I would be lying if I said I never laughed at the suicide booths in Futurama, but a defter touch than you tend to see from this mangaka would be nice.

And the way Tamon begins to get really codependent isn’t a great look either. There’s love and then there’s using somebody’s adulation to get them into positions where you can manipulate them and I assure this is going for the longer-winded one.

Part of Kinoshita setting boundaries and such is because of her job and because of her devotion to the idol, so watching Tamon stomp all over these because he’s getting attached and obsessive might make for a fun bit of table-turning, but it’s a little icky.

Hence my earlier point that sometimes a bit less would be a lot more. It’s not that this is especially bad, but it could be a lot smoother. I felt that about Takane & Hana as well, although this one isn’t wearing its welcome out just yet.

3 stars - there are some real lumps in this gravy that keep it from being as smooth as its hero when he’s in full idol mode. When it lands, it lands, but sometimes that reach to grasp ratio is way, way off.

3.5 stars

I have a little bit of mixed feelings on this volume mainly because Tamon being at the top of the building seeming like he wants to jump was extremely triggering, but also Tamon is not the Tamon I thought he was…

The growth of the characters continues to be really really good! I feel bad for Utage though because I think it's a lot more obvious that Tamon DOES have feelings for her and she has no idea of even how to potentially acknowledge he sees her more than his housekeeper. Since she is such a diligent and faithful fan, I don't know how she is going to really come to terms even with her own feelings in the way she was worrying for Mr. Gloomyhara at one point.

Ori continues to be Ori, but apparently, NO ONE is who they appear to be in F/ACE because, um, the new guy we get to REALLY see is so different than what I expected (and how he appears)…

Probably not my favorite volume, but goodness I can't stop reading because that last chapter was so shocking that I really don't know where things are going to go from here!

3.5/5

It’s volume 3, you know the drill. Utage is still a clueless but helpful friend. Tamon is still a clueless pop star. We’re introduced to more of Tamon’s group mates quirks. Mostly this volume was the conclusion to the Center Competition.

Real question: is anybody okay in this story? Is everybody delusional? I swear everyone and their dog has a split personality.
That being said, everyone being complete whack-jobs does make this manga very interesting and hilarious.

I can’t wait for when the romance clicks, because currently it’s very dry. I can definitely see a ramping up of emotions and I’m interested to see the outcome of this story.

As others mentioned their was talks of suicide in this volume. His third team member now is in to her too maybe from at least a rival and doesn’t want good for Tamon perhaps stand point… we didn’t get much Ori in this volume. I am confused by him turning on the charm with her that feels odd.

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review. All opinions are my own.

High schooler Utage works as a housekeeper part-time in order to fund her fangirl obsession over idol Tamon Fukuhara. Coincidentally, she lands a job as his housekeeper and discovers a gloomy side to him.

I mostly enjoyed the first two novels as it was fun seeing idols have wholly different personalities than their stage personas. The humor is kind of silly, but wore out fast for me. What prevented me from enjoying this volume is a spoiler so read at your own risk... The humor doesn't help to dissipate this particular scene for me so I think I'll stop reading this series here.

This series is incredibly funny, and I found myself laughing out loud throughout the last chapter. However, there's one significant issue that prevents me from giving it a full five-star rating: the depiction of a suicide attempt. This subject is not funny and should not be depicted so carelessly.

On the other hand, I wonder if the intention was to highlight the serious problem of overworking young adults in this industry, who often fail to recognize their limits or find ways to cope. If that's the case, then it's commendable to raise awareness about how abusive such environments can be for teenagers, children, or anyone in a similar situation.

Unfortunately, the comedic portrayal undermines the gravity of the issue. Despite this concern, I'm thoroughly enjoying the series and eagerly anticipating the next volume.

Is Tamon seeing Utage for who she is, or is he seeing her as a manifestation of his fandom? He seems to be defining the line between love for his fans and love for an individual in a bizarre way. Nevertheless, however he defines his affections, he’s allowing his feelings of jealousy to manifest in extremely unhealthy ways. Having never learned how to truly love someone else until now, he also doesn’t know what it means to manage the negative feelings that may accompany loving someone while also relying on that person for all self worth and meaning. Tamon has indisputably developed a dependent attachment to Utage alongside an affection for her whether it’s an affection for her as a person or for her as his super fan.
Not necessarily recognizing his new feelings and behaviors as harmful to almost anyone but himself, not only does he not know how to control these feelings but he also allows himself to be consumed by them. I think that he doesn’t try to control it as a means of self deprecation. At the same time, he might simply not know how to, as this is all new to him. But as Utage says at the end of this volume, this is the type of person Tamon has always been. Tamon is less the tender, seemingly abused (mostly by their own self) puppy boyfriend, and perhaps the psycho possessive boyfriend. Equally sexy, but much more scary and much less okay. I hope that Tamon learns his independence. Time and again, he’s emotionally manipulating Utage into doing the things he wants. He cheers up when she compliments him, even if it feels false or empty. Unwittingly, Utage has been feeding into Tamon’s narcissism, which is such a bad mouth to feed.

Tamon aside, Utage has caught the attention of Ori, huh? He has feelings for her, even if it’s of a competitive nature (wanting to win her over, since she’s the first person to be seemingly immune to his charm). And now with a third player expressing interest in her… Is Utage accidentally building a reverse harem?

Also, I love that this volume has a cookie recipe! So many cute bonuses in this series (like the Twitter accounts too).

Dommage.

I’m also part of the Church of Tamon hehehe.

Bro Tamon and Ori are adorable. Tamon bc of his extremism, and Ori bc I love tsunderes. I know every character is simply a trope, but at this point, I don’t care.

I like seeing each of the F/ACE members’ “b-side” since it gives them more interesting characteristics than simply being an idol. Of course, this series isn’t aiming to depict a realistic depiction of idol culture in the same way that Ohsi no Ko does, but I think it adds a layer of depth to an otherwise shallow story and plot.

Okay, so this is where the series is taking a turn to explore darker themes such as suicide and manipulation with the threat of it as well as turning on his “Hottie-hara” persona on her. I would even go so far to say that Tamon is descending almost into yandere territory with the level of possessiveness he has. Yes, I can analyze how both Utage and Tamon are definitely in a toxic relationship—more on Tamon’s part since he literally doesn’t want to live without her whole Utage actually sets boundaries and sticks firmly to them—but this is supposed to be a light-hearted series, so I’m going to treat it as such. I’m not going to lie, it is starting to rub me the wrong way, but I am interested in seeing where this goes.

It's weird. The kinder I'm treated, the happier and more scared it makes me.
Right on schedule for a shoujo comedy, taking in three volumes of this manga in quick succession has made it lose some of its luster. In the future, reading this as it comes out rather than in chunks will be for the best.

Making a third band member have a "B-side"* is understandable considering stage personae are manufactured for commercial appeal, but now that we're at the rule of threes on that, and we've barely seen this third character, I do hope that future revelations aren't as rushed and that we get to see as much of as we have of Ori.

* I was able to predict his B-side a panel or two before it was revealed, which is an indication either of its predictability, or that Shiwasu gave us just enough hints ahead of time.

Tamon's B-side is bleeding into his stage performances, and his A-side is coming across more strongly at home through his interactions with Utage, who is bamboozled every time. They each have reasons not to think they're becoming romantically connected, so their comedic stasis will continue for a while yet. :)

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

We got to see some good growth from Tamon in this volume. He's becoming more assertive, learning what he actually wants to do. In the manga they say he's maturing, but I don't know if I'd use that word myself. It's interesting to see a female lead with such strong convictions interacting with a male lead who is so easily swayed, and I like seeing how their dynamic is changing in this volume, with the changes that Tamon is undergoing.

These characters have got me completely hooked, and I'm so excited to see what mysterious thing happened in Tamon's past that other characters and the plot keep alluding to. I can't wait for volume 4.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an Arc in exchange for review.

So the competition continues between the boys of F/ACE! Who will become the group's new center? Will Tamon keep his role, or will sneaky Ori swoop in for the prize? Reader's will find out the answer in this installment of Tamon's B-Side! Utage continues balancing her life between Mr. Gloomyhara's depressive moods and being his alter-ego's obsessive fangirl. We left the last volume off to a Romantic ending, but what happens when Ori comes to the realization that he wants Utage's attention on himself? As the competition grows fierce, feelings start to set free. 4/5 stars.

I agree with others (esp Mark) about this volume taking a gag too far. There's over the top funny and over the top uncomfortable, and this takes the humor darker than I think is funny. BUT - there were moments I wasn't too sure about in Takane and Hana and I still loved it. Still love this. The Church of Tamon is in full swing (fool swing? 🤨😆) and the center showdown concludes. Usually this helps tide me over until the next Skip Beat releases, but Skip Beat just released, too, and I devoured it, so that also made this a little less fun than usual. I'll take Ren over Tamon any day any time. ♡(> ਊ <)♡

Volume three!

I'm really enjoying the way the relationships between Utage and the bandmates are developing, like where it looks like something is developing between her and Tamon, but then she is so far removed from reality, she is unable to see him as anything but divine. Basically they're both insane and deserve each other probably. You then have Ori jealously trying to win her attention in the bid for him being center of the group, but I think it was handled believably because Ori is also so unlikeable! It feels less like a love angle cliché and more like wow fandom culture is absolutely insane.

And then there's Keito.........

This series is the best!! I feel terrible that Tamon isn't the center (although it's only for this song so it should be fine again). I'm getting some suicide boy vibes from Tamon at this point (not literally but like the webtoon). I really really REALLY do hope that he gets confidence like komi does in komi can't communicate. And I'm beginning to feel worried that none of his team members care about him?? I hope that's not true - because then he really wouldn't have anyone except for the housekeeper/fmc to care for him.

I really like the way the story is going. In this volume you get to see a little bit more behind the other band members dual personalities. The results of the showdown come through as well, I'm not sure the results were the author not wanting to commit or not but I'm fine with how it went. I am getting very curious about Tamon's developing personality. I'm starting to wonder if the goal of the story will eventually have him more of a merger between his two sides. He seems to really like Uta and I'm very curious where that's going to go lol.

That moment when an idol has a parasocial relationship with a fan.

Being serious though, I do like the outcome of Keito becoming center for the sake of Ouri and Tamon's character- even though it was spoiled for me as I was beginning the arc.
I do like Utage seeing more of Tamon's vulnerable side, like when she's wondering about his whereabouts during the center competition.
I'm a little iffy about Tamon becoming more jealous and possessive. I'm not particularly a fan of the yandere trope, but I do like the manga's concept and story enough to see where this goes.

ummmmmmmm 😭

all i can say is that the yandere vibes were STRONG with this one and i'm lowkey terrified ngl. the "i'll die" part made me laugh but it all went south from there REAL quick. while i don't think he's a yan but rather someone struggling with both abandonment and attachment issues, bcs after a long, long time he finally has someone willing to fight for him, i'm still rendered very uncomfortable by his possessive tendencies

I'M SUPER SUPER EXCITED FOR THE NEW VOLUME!!!!

I enjoyed this volume a lot! It was very funny and very focused on Tamon and Utage. It was a bit sad seeing that Tamon didn’t get the center position, not Ori but a new and intriguing character. I like how Tamon is taking the initiative with Utage, even though she still hasn’t realized that he’s interested in her, because of course if someone is famous, it’s hard to imagine they would fall for you. I loved how Tamon baked her a cake because he wanted to show her he cares about her!

Not everyone in F/ACE being two-faced, guess that's where the name comes from. Tamon included, he's revealing himself as manipulative, whether he's conscious about it or doing it out of habit. I *really* hope it's not going to be played for sh*ts and giggles since our gal seems to be aware of it, also because it'd be a great character development.

P.S. Ori is a menace, I love him lol
