It takes a strong woman to run a family – and an empire

Janey Hallahan was born into the criminal life. After the death of her father, she became head of the family business – every day making dark decisions that make her family firm richer, no matter how dangerous.

While Janey rules gangland with an iron fist, she always sticks to her own code of honour, and the innocent never get hurt.

One of her workers, Danny McInroy runs an exclusive club in Glasgow – the kind of place where the ultra-wealthy can fulfil their darkest desires, for a hefty cost. He’s good at his job, but his arrogance and propensity to violence makes him a liability. But when Janey discovers that he’s linked to the disappearance of two women, it’s time to take revenge.

Because no one messes with Janey, or her empire… and as gangland is about to learn, a powerful woman will stop at nothing to protect her reputation.

2.5☆ Unfortunately for me I DNF this one. I got just over half way and decided to stop.
I love Alex Kane's books and this is my first I haven't finished.
I may revisit this one in the future, but for me the cancer word just popped up a bit too much, and it's not what I want to be reading when someone i know is going through it.
I also didn't particularly connect to any of the characters and found it hard to get my head round who was who.
I am however looking forward to reading Alex's next book.
These are just my personal opinions and I do think others will really enjoy the book.

Janey is not to be messed with. She runs a tight ship with her minions I mean employees knowing where the boundaries are and the penalties for jumping those boundaries.

Except Danny. He thinks he knows better because he’s a man. But he’s not a particularly nice man. He uses people for his own means, even his best bud. But he’s worse with women, he’s just not a nice person. He’s someone to steer well clear off… but unfortunately some don’t take head of warnings because they’re smitten with his smooth happy persona… oh how a switch can flick! *shudder*

Yet again Kane has created a pacey gangland thriller that isn’t purely about the gangs. She weaves in the lives of the innocents who have been drawn in to this dark and violent world by accident, or desperation and struggle to escape.

I never thought I’d enjoy the gangland side of crime fiction but Alex Kane’s books are enthralling and I really enjoy the balance she gets between the criminal aspects of the story and the more personal side of her characters. These people before me on my kindle are real and I see them playing out the story in my mind’s eye as I read! Just brilliant 👏🏻👏🏻 👏🏻

Gangland thriller Glasgow.

Janey Hallahan is the boss of the clubs and hearing Geo McInroy is on his death bed with cancer, Glasgows most feared gangster, his step son Danny is taking over Club Envy and Carbeth he is not to be trusted. Glasgow will go under, and she needs proof to get rid of him once and for all she knows he is involved in murders and drug rings, she's watching him.

Cor Blimey this is one fast pace read, digging up lots of twisted secrets that are so clever and you never see coming. I do hope this is the start of a new series from this author and we learn more from Janey and husband Ciaran, it's definitely a must read book and would make a fantastic series all round for readers.
Excellent 5 stars. gripping and twisted read.

My Recommendation
Thanks to boldwood books and netgalley for this arc. I was blown away by this book. It was also nice to see strong women taking the lead. When janey hallahan takes over her fathers criminal empire after his death, there are things she isnt happy with, the main one Danny Mcinroy who despises women and certainly doesnt want to take orders from his new boss. As danny tries to take his new boss down, but is she 1 step ahead of him?. When a young women is beaten so badly by danny mcinroys hands, she escapes with her life and moves away so he wont finish the job., her best friend martin wants to destroy him, the whilst attending his nightclub 1 night, he is abducted. When rory is tasked with killing martin, he can't do it. What does he do? Even though janey is on the wrong side of the law, there are some things she will not tolerate. What are they? Nice to read a gangland boss with a softer side . Loved this book, couldn't put it down, twists and turns, hope janey will feature in more books?

📖 BOOK REVIEW 📖📚

📖 Book - Janey
✍️ Author - Alex Kane
📕 Publisher - Hera
🗓 Publication Date - 15th June 2023.

We all have them don’t we … the certain authors that we love … that get to skip the queue’s for our book reviews, we don’t even need to read the book blurb before we hit the pre-order/buy or netgalley request button!! But like every mum of their children … of course I don’t have ONE favourite 🤩 😉 😜 😉…….. I have a FEW!!! 😂.

📕 📖 gangland/crime 📖📕.

We meet Janey Hallahan. She is head of the crime family, having taken over when her father passed away. She had to work twice as hard, to earn the respect from the men who work for her, but this she has now managed. Danny’s father worked for Janey and he was well respected by her. Now that Danny has taken over, she just knows this is not going to end well!! Danny thinks he is untouchable but he shouldn’t underestimate Janey … absolutely not!!

it takes a strong woman to run a family - and an empire. Janey Hallahan was born into the criminal life. After the death of her father, she became head of the family business - every day making dark decisions that make her family firm richer, no matter how dangerous. While Janey rules gangland with an iron fist, she always sticks to her own code of honor, and the innocent never get hurt.

Set in Glasgow. I was hooked from the prologue. Janey inherited the family business, and she wants to prove that she's a force to be reckoned with. It's filled with strong likeable characters, There's a new kid on Janey's pay roll. Janey doesn't trust him and knows that it's not going to end well. There's lots of twists and turns in this fast paced, gripping and well written book. I hope Janey will feature in more books. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #HeraBooks and the author #AlexKane for my ARC of #Janey in exchange for an honest review.

I was thrilled to read the latest release from one of my favourite authors in this genre. I wasn't disappointed! Kane created a gripping gangland story that kept me up way past my bedtime. Janey, the protagonist, is a likeable character whose sensitive side is portrayed without diminishing her strength. Kane's creation of strong female characters is seamless and impressive.

While I briefly felt sympathetic toward Danny in the first few chapters, Kane's ability to make readers detest certain characters is a true talent. It took me a few chapters to understand who was who and what was happening, but once I did, I was fully invested.

The brief, punchy chapters made for a captivating and easy read.

Although it's not my all-time favourite from this author, I would still give it a well-deserved five-star rating.

From the first page, i knew this book was for me. Every chapter was exciting right to the end, well written, with great characters. The characters were introduced slowly so you got a chance to get to know them.

Janey Hallahan is a very strong woman and she runs her criminal gang with a rod of iron. If her workers are loyal to her they are looked after. If they tread on her toes they are in serious trouble, as is the case of Danny McInroy.
Working off of his late father's respected name he hates women and working for one is below him, so he tries to take off Janey's gang...........

Every page had something exciting to read about, violence, murder, twisted coppers and hate are the name of this book.

I love Alex Kane's writing and have read and enjoyed everyone.
This one especially.

Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

So Janey is the head of the Hallahan Empire and isn't too fond of Danny. Danny's dad Geo, a loyal employee of Janey's is dying and Danny is due to take over Geo's businesses. Does Danny toe the line??? Does Janey have to slap him into submission??? Or does she end his career before it even begins???

I wasn't too sure of this at first. A lot of characters with a lot of details at a slow pace. When I got around halfway through, the pace picked up, story was intriguing. It could have ended in several different directions. I was eager to see how this one would finish. Will definitely look out for more of Alex's work

4.5 ⭐️s

Janey is fantastically paced with a real sense of menace as we delve into the darker side of humanity. It pulls you in from the get go and fully immerses us in the gritty criminal underworld of Glasgow. As the fight for power and control plays out the Hallahan rule is enforced with an iron fist – cue an addictively good read!

Kane’s crafted an impressive female protagonist in Janey. She’s a strong leader, to be underestimated at your own peril! She fiercely defends her empire and will do whatever it takes to ensure that the Hallahan code of conduct is upheld. I loved that’s she’s fully realised, her cut-throat nature is contrasted with the more caring, vulnerable side we see. Ciaran is her rock of support and their relationship works perfectly, I’m hoping it’s not the last we’ll be seeing of these two!

As Danny takes over the running of his Dad’s businesses he objects to having to answer to Janey. He’s unpredictable, arrogant and heartless. He manipulates those closest to him for his own gain and the more damage he inflicts the more untouchable he seems. Kane creates a truly sinister and disturbing character to root against!

Three women with different stories end up in his evil clutches. Lucy’s running from her past, Christine is alone and grieving, and Shannon is missing. It’s a gripping read as we unravel their interconnecting threads skilfully woven together revealing some shocking truths!

The building tension is palpable as the chapters brilliantly explore loyalty, pride, anger and the danger these can bring. The ripple effects can be felt sending shockwaves through the pages and the unexpected twists propel the reader deeper into the unknown.

Don’t hesitate to pick this one up if you enjoy a thrilling page-turner, you will not be disappointed!

Perfect for fans of Jessie Keane, Kimberly Chambers and Heather Burnside.

With thanks to @KellyALacey, @Lovebookstours, @AlexKaneWriter and @HeraBooks for a place on the tour.

Talk about a book where you love to hate or is it hate to love the main character? On one hand she is a ruthless gang leader, keeping everyone in the gang world in control, but on the other hand she has rules about the innocent people, which isn’t perfect, but does take at lease a portion of a heart to do. She has some compassion and a ton of determination and drive, so I just cannot hate her.
I really enjoyed getting to know her, especially as she was crossed and her inner dragon came out to play, showing those in her gangland why they needed to stay on her good side.
I really liked the suspense and the level of excitement this book had to offer. It was easy to dive in and really get completely hooked!

Janey Hallahan runs her late fathers Empire with some help from her husband Ciaran. Janey isn't someone to be messed with, but she's also loyal to her employee. When Danny Mcinroy takes over his stepfather's club he doesn't like the fact that Janey is his boss. Danny hates women and he's not going to take his orders from Janey, but Janey is one step ahead of Danny. Will she remove him or will him stop and listen?
It was nice to see a strong women is the main character, it made the plot more interesting for me. The story has everything you want in a gangland thriller, plenty of twists and turns, some I didn't see coming. I'm looking forward to see what Alex has next for Janey.

‘Janey’ is a well written and gripping gangland thriller. This novel had me gripped right from the beginning and it was difficult to put down. Janey is a strong main character, she is not prepared to put up with any sh** from anyone especially not someone like Danny McInroy but she also has a sensitive side which definitely makes her a lot more relatable to anyone reading the novel.

There is a lot of tension in this novel and if you have any triggers, best to check them before reading. Janey is action packed and fast paced.

I received a gifted copy of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and written voluntarily.

I loved this refreshing gangland thriller.

Janey finds herself as head of the family, after the death of her father - and as such takes over as head of the family business.
She runs her criminal world with a strong arm, being firm but fair.
When she discovers that one of her workers is taking her for a fool and involved with a couple of missing women, Janey decides it's time to take revenge.

I was totally hooked right from page 1. The writing style was exciting and full of action which had me racing through - I couldn't put this down.
This was fast-paced and so tense I was on the edge of my seat. The setting was perfect and I found this so atmospheric that I really felt as though I was there.

Janey was an amazing main character. It's not very often that we see a female gangland boss and I loved her attitude to keeping things fair - no innocents to be involved.

I loved that this was still a twisty storyline. This always helps to keep us invested right until the end especially when things are so unpredictable.

A brilliant read and my first by this author - I'd love to see this as a series - but if not, I'll be keen to see more from this author.

Nobody messes with Janey! It takes a strong women to be a gangland boss and she’s the best. Firm but fair, until one of her employees goes a bit too far and tries to take over her operations in Glasgow. However, when she finds out, all he’ll is going to break loose!
The action is fast-paced and exciting. There are so many twists and secrets that you never see it coming. This is a great read. It’s very refreshing to see a female gangland boss, who is so tough. I really liked Janey because she takes no bull from anyone. I loved this book and hope to see more of Janey in the future.

Well plotted. Credible action. Characters lack complexity, two dimensional.

Not too bright, narcissistic, handsome misogynist Danny inherits a big slice of Glaswegian criminal franchise. His personality ill suits him to work under 'capo donna' Janey. A serial abuser and murderer of his short life girl friends, his badly flawed plan to own the lot results in his inevitable downfall. If you want to read first rate gritty Scottish crime novels, go for Not in the same league as Val Mcdermid or Denise Mina.

Review- wow , what an action packed gangsta thriller. I’ve said on many occasions this could be a tv series or a film I was totally invested and routing for the characters. I liked the pace of the book and how later on in the book you start to see character stories overlap and interlink which always makes it more interesting and brings everything together. I rate this book 4 stars and I’ll definitely be looking into other books by this author, go check it out 😊

Firstly I love that Alex Kane made the gangland boss female! Why shouldn’t the boss be female and be able to handle herself. (Not that I condone violence 😂)

I found myself willing characters to run, willing Janey to get rid of Danny and I had mixed feelings about Rory. The characters were that well thought out and described in the book that I got drawn in very quickly.

I’ve not read a gangland thriller in a while but I want to read more again now.

Janey

A fantastic read by Alex Kane. Gripping crime thriller based in Glasgow, with a woman heading a gang. Throw in a bar manager who wants to take over and take down anyone in his way. He hates women, especially power ones. He enjoys inflicting pain and death. But Janey is on to him from the start, and goes out of her way to give him enough rope to hang himself. People going missing, druds, police corruption, this book has it all.

Another very good read set in Glasgow and revolving around gangsters. I liked the characterisation and the plotting. Some characters I absolutely hated, especially Danny! The plotting was interesting, there was plenty drama and suspense with a neatly wrapped up ending. An author I would recommend for lovers of thrillers. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.

A Scottish gangland thriller with a strong female protagonist.
Janey is a fab main character and I would love to see her again in another Kane book.
A good amount of characters with different stories which meant there was a variety of endings that puke have happened.
If you like Martina Cole, Jacqui Rose, Jessie Keane amongst others then this will be right up your Street.
