J.D. Ruffin is the author of the acclaimed, action-packed Kingdom War series, an epic fantasy launched in 2021.

As a fourteen-year-old bespeckled boy, J.D. and his friends would gather around the D&D dice for hours on end, trading reality for fantasy, if only in their minds. In his quest to “stump his friends” with an impossible campaign, he dreamed up a storyline that captured his imagination.

Then… well… nothing happened. He grew up and went to work in a completely different world.

Too many years later, that story he dreamed pulled at the corner of his mind, demanding to be heard… to be written.

Hence, an author was born.

J.D. currently lives in Florida with his better half and three Australian shepherds. When not tapping at keys, you'll find him playing tennis, attempting gourmet cheffery, and traveling.

Y’all know how much I absolutely love fantasy, magic, and royalty…this book had all of my favorite things. It also contained multiple POVs, which I love. I thought the author did a good job of making each voice unique enough that you were able to tell which POV you were reading. While Jess did get on my nerves at first, I did enjoy seeing her growth through the novel. Excited for the rest of this series!

Thanks to the author for gifting me a copy. All thoughts are my own.

Actual rating 3.5!

Thank you so much to the author for sending me a copy of his book.

Magic, love, and deceit.
Long ago, a powerful mage plagued the land, attempting to lord over the land. However, Irina was unsuccessful with her plans. Even though she was overcome, her followers still remain. And they want nothing more than to bring her back.

In order to do this though, her followers need magicians. The concept is super interesting and
I liked the imagery that went into the scene of one of the sacrifices. She was being prepared for the ceremony, except she had no idea she would be bleeding out and dying as everyone around her chanted for the rise of Irina. Definitely creepy!

I liked the two different storylines and slowly watching as everything started to come together. Jess is an interesting character, I both liked her, but also disliked some of her actions. She seemed quite immature for the next in line for the throne, but I did love the fact that it was the king's daughter who would take the throne rather than a son.

I honestly think the queen was my favorite character. She is not a kind person, and I do think she might be capable of a semblance of love, but she couldn't bring herself to love her daughter like she needed. It was very wicked queen-esque.

Overall, I think this book has tons of potential. The first book is full of world building and getting to know the characters. So it is a bit of a slower read. I think it will be interesting to see where this story goes!

The prologue already kick started my heart, what a way to start an incredible journey! This is not a simple tale with a simple plot with a few characters. This is a beautifully complex tale that expands throughout the realm, with multiple characters and from multiple POV's. But it's a plot and story that is so easy to follow, so easy to understand what's going on. Ok, maybe it does open up questions as to who and why young women are being taken against their will, what possible purpose does that serve. It most certainly kept me reading enthusiastically to find out!

Tiana, a healer, is abducted by whom and why, neither she nor those looking for her can say. Her disappearance uncovers another abduction, which might or might not be connected. And all this happens just as Tiana and the dashing Keelan start a fledgling admiration for one another. I love a strong female MC and Tiana is exactly that. She knows what she wants and goes out to get it. Even whilst being held captive, she doesn't just lie down and take it, she's resourceful and tough. So is another prominent character, Jess, a future queen, is being pushed into a marriage of convenience, more forced really. The main instigator is her mother, who puts politics way over the needs or wishes of her daughter. Yeah we all get that political marriages are a thing, but really lady? And what other plans does she have hidden up her sleeve? None that are good, that's for sure! At the tender age of 16, Jess will not be dictated to, she's obstinate, although not in an annoying way, all she wants is to be included in the choice process, it is her life after all. Keelan is tasked with getting behind Tiana's disappearance, which leads him to discover a much larger conspiracy, one of an imminent war and a reunion with his brother, a brother with a huge chip on his shoulder but a brother who's honourable. I'm enjoying both their characters and I'm looking forward to Declan's solo quest, to an island of magic, where he has none.

This is my first time reading this author, I was surprised when I suddenly got to the end of the book, I say suddenly because I hadn't realised a few hours had passed, nor did I realise I hadn't moved from my chair. That tell you something, doesn't it? Another favourite author? Oh yes! Definitely!

No Conclusion

I was expecting an enclosed story that led into a sequel. What I read was an unfinished story.

This is one of those that expects you to purchase the next for any sort of conclusion to the many plot lines that were left dangling open. Depending on curiosity or impatience to read the next. I've read to many like this and have seen to many tv show that were left unfinished for this to work with me. Plenty of other books out there.

Nothing whatsoever solved, so this automatically dropped the rating in my book. No redemption, no matter how decent the characters and their plights were. I really loath this tactic used in order to sell more books, so will just stop reading the series.

Page~turning fantasy!

What a wild ride! I was completely drawn in by the story in the first few pages and had to keep reading until the end to find out what happened with the story. I felt in a completely different world, swept away by magic and adventure.

Thank you J.D. Ruffin for letting me get an early copy of your book!

Heir of Magic tells the story of a land where magicians are suddenly going missing and the Princess is running away to escape an arranged marriage. It’s the first in the three book Kingdom War series.

This first book is primarily world building and not too much of a plot, which makes the story feel like it’s lacking its potential and hard to follow. There’s a build up to a climax and then nothing happens. We are just left there. This may be the type of series that should be binged all at once. The characters and their dialogue also fall flat, unfortunately.

I think this magical world has a lot of potential, but this book doesn’t do it’s best to showcase that.

Thank you J. D. Ruffin for allowing me to read an eARC of your book.

A magical world where some people have gifts and some do not. There is tension between the kingdoms and a cult that has survived for hundreds of years. People with gifts start to go missing causing a task force to go looking for them.

Multiple point of views were told throughout the story. It’s preferable that at the beginning of each chapter the author lets the readers know who’s point of view it is. Almost each chapter was a different POV and they didn’t follow the same timeline, each character was at a different point in the story. This made it a little more difficult to keep track of the story line. On the plus side, readers are able to learn about different characters that each bring something different to the story.

The relationship between Keelan and his brother was something that could have been explored more. It was enjoyable to learn more about their backgrounds, hopefully in the next books their relationship grows.

The concept of this book is good and the characters have interesting qualities, but it fell short. Most of the twist were predictable and the ending was not unexpected, unfortunately.

Heir of Magic had me hooked from the start. Who doesn't love a world full of people with unique magical powers where there's also a dangerous mystery to be solved?

The characters are relatable and intriguing from their first entrances onto the page and I could not wait to find out more about them. I personally loved Keelan and Declan- their individual personalities and brotherly dynamic. The Royal Family, their disagreements, and that fine line between duty and love gave some really great complexity to the story as well. There were a lot of characters in this book and whether they were on it for a few or a hundred pages, they all held my attention and gave color to J.D. Ruffin's enchanting and sometimes terrifying world.

Ruffin does a fantastic job at pacing the story and showing us his world piece by piece in a way that's not overwhelming or cumbersome. The story constantly moved, no page wasted, and the reveals were given in waves as we got closer to the end of the book versus all at once. I really appreciated that as a reader- and boy, were there some reveals I did not see coming!

There are so many exciting mysteries we are left with and I look forward to uncovering the answers to in the sequel.

It’s hard to say what is most appealing about this book: the true-to-life characters that seem to jump off the page, the carefully crafted Kingdom that you can imagine being part of, or the tension that keeps the reader wondering (and worrying) what will happen next. The story moves swiftly among several different characters and situations, and ramps up the suspense by leaving the reader hanging with each change in point of view—frustrating, but very effective! Every main character is likable, even lovable, drawing the reader quickly into his or her life. I liked that each character had his or her own type of magic, and appreciated the touches that made them seem so real, just living in a different time and place: the princess wrestles with sexism, orphan brothers struggle to fit in, young love … just happens. All in all, a treat for anyone who loves fantasy, with a cliffhanger ending that leaves me hoping Book II will come soon!

I’m such a huge fan of fantasy, especially when royalty is involved. Magic? Umm yes please! There was so much magic and betrayal in this title, The element of surprise was definitely present. The world building was intricate along with a rollercoaster of a plot.

I enjoyed seeing the development of Jess, the heir of the throne, she starts off as this child but slowly gives her all to learn the ways of the kingdom. I usually have a difficult time connecting with main characters like this one but she started to grow on me once her character evolved.

I have a tendency of getting a bit confused when it comes to multiple Point of views, the different timelines were a bit difficult to follow but all in all the plot kept me hooked. I loved the fight for magic, betrayal of their own people. The extent of what people do for magic in this book was woah, super interesting.
The cult-ish element gave life to the importance of magic…Who is the villain though? This was my thought throughout the book because of the value of so many characters.I would’ve loved to learn more about the brothers, especially Keelan.

Looking forward to reading the next book in the series, I am a huge sucker for the historical value of a story, definitely want to learn more about the characters and the magic portrayed in the story.

Thanks so much to the author for gifting me a copy of this book!

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy to read and review!

Who doesn’t love magic? Royalty and deceit? All the things that go along with a world full of power. The story is told through multiple POVS and the flow can be difficult to keep up with but after a few chapters gets easier.

There were a ton of characters to enjoy in the start of this series. Book one is a little slow at first but it is because it is fantasy and tons of world building to do. The royal family is very intriguing and I actually loved that the next in line for the throne was the princess and not the prince. Jess has some major character growth coming I feel since she is bound to take over the throne.

It’s interesting the dynamic between the people with magic and the people without. The conflict with the cult and the fact that people with magic are disappearing. This cult is capturing magical people and sacrificing them in order to bring back their leader Irina… creepy? I think so.

There is definitely a ton going on and I’m interested to see where the story leads in the next few books.

I was given this ARC for free voluntarily to read. This is my honest review.

This book is about a kingdom on the brink air war with the neighboring country. Told through the views of a Lieutenant Guardsman, the crown princess, the queen, and two kidnapped women, this was a wild ride from start to finish.

It begins with young girl being taken by a cult in hopes of bringing back their ruler. This starts an investigation when a young healer, someone special to the Lieutenant, gets taken. He takes the head of the investigation and reveals that they might be connected, as other magic users have been taken by cult members.

All the while, the crown princess and the queen are fighting, because the queen wants to arrange a betrothal for the princess. The princess doesn’t want to be married off to her mother’s choices and runs away with her love. The pair run from cult members and the guards, making it to the mountains where they split. The princess gets taken by the cult, not before seeing the green eyes of her beloved through a cult member’s mask.

This story, told through many voices, came together beautifully and kept me guessing as to what was going to happen. I didn’t see that ending, and I can’t believe it left off there. Can’t wait for the next one!

I have never felt compelled to write a review, but JD Ruffin hit a home run with the Heir of Magic. I found myself not wanting to put the book down as I became lost in an fantasy world mystery adventure. I was drawn in deeply and quickly connected with each new character as the storyline developed. This is an ARC provided by the author for an honest review. The prologue was fantastic. Somewhere along the way, it became a struggle to actually stay excited about the story. The characters were like an unfinished painting.I love fantasy, especially when there is magic involved. Heir of Magic just didn't feed my soul. The last chapter actually gave me hope that the second book will be riveting from the get-go. It gave me excited chills but too late...

Book 1

Book 1 had a few errors throughout and the plot and characters where boring and naive. The main character princess was whiny and self absorbed so much it took away from the plot. The parents also where not what a king and queen should be. The plot was predictable and left out information that will probably be filled in for book 2.

A Good Beginning

I liked everything about this book except there was no co poets story. Usually each book in a series can stand alone though it leaves you wanting more. This book does not and no warning of that is given. If you can't afford to buy the series I recommend you not read it as you will be left unsatisfied.

‘Get me the orb now!” - Irina commands and an epic fantasy opens!

Tennessee author JD Ruffin makes a prominent mark on the genre of epic fantasy. His audience continues to grow, and for those who have yet to begin the series, this is a fine intro to a fantasy that is rich in suspense as well as acerbic wit and humor – and magic. After placing Irina on the stage, we learn, ‘Irina surveyed the battle from her mountainside perch. The flesh of her arms pimpled as power coursed through her veins. Magical fire raged from her staff, scorching men and earth alike, leaving blood and madness where enemies stood moments before.’ With that scintillating prelude, this epic fantasy soars.

Ruffin condenses the plot as follows - ‘She’s been dead a thousand years. Now she wants her throne back. First one kidnapping. Then another. A vengeful cult is stealing Gifted in their quest to revive an ancient queen whose anger threatens to destroy everything. As investigator Keelan Rae races to find the missing, he unearths a disturbing pattern: Only those with magic are taken—but why? When the kidnappings spread across the border, and Crown Princess Jess Vester vanishes, fear grips the land. Rumors grow into whispers, then questions, then truth. All evidence points east, toward a powerful neighbor, and a desperate king wrestles with cries for war. Time is running out. Will the fragile peace hold? Can the kidnapped be saved and the Princess found? What of the cult and their quest to resurrect their powerful queen?’

Magic, pure magic spins off every page of this novel. For lovers of epic fantasy, this book rises to the top of the list.

Book lacks focus; who’s the protagonist?

The blurb makes it sound like the investigator is the main character, but he shows up later and seems like a boring secondary character. His brother, the ranger, is given lots of fun descriptions, but he doesn’t show up on the page until much later. The self-absorbed tantrum-prone princess is annoying and not very likable. The nurse character is intriguing, but she seems like a forgotten secondary character. I feel like each character is a stick in a pick-up-sticks game that has been dropped into a pile Willy-nilly with the barest of connection to the plot movements of the others.

Many of the characters lack memorable physical features and personalities. They interact with nuance at times, but act like stereotypes at others. Most settings are meticulously described, but clothing and hair for some characters are inconsistently detailed. The story is just out of balance and needs more focus on essential elements. The plot of impending war seems unimportant as none of the characters has established a love for their homeland. Who cares if there’s an invasion?

Heir of Magic was pleasantly surprising. It started a bit slow, or it may have been that I have sort of been in a reading slump, but then picked up about 25% of the way through. There are several characters; Keelan, who is in search of Tiana, a healer, as well as a few others who were kidnapped, Jess, the crown princess-first in line to the throne, who is in love with Danym but her parents are trying to marry her off to some old guys. Two kingdoms at peace for years but will it come to an end?

So far I am enjoying the characters. Keelan’s brother Declan comes into the story and I’m a bit intrigued about his story and why he has no magic. Plots are brewing for war, there are shady ongoings by those in power, and a world full of those with magic powers.

The premise is great and the world building good so far. The writing is good and has kept me entertained. I have already recommended this to a friend who is looking for a new series. Hopefully the author will keep up the pace and intrigue of this series.

Great Start to a New Fantasy, Mystery, Adventure

Parents- PG13- good for middle school and up
Language- None that I remember
Violence- PG13- normal to genre nothing too graphic
Sexual Content- PG13- Young teen forbidden love, mostly kissing, discussions of being sold off in marriage, sharing a hotel room but outside of snuggling to sleep it stayed innocent

While it did start a bit slow and the princess Jess was a bit irritating I really did enjoy this book. I loved the two-story lines- Jess’s coming of age and forbidden romance, and the mystery of the missing, kidnapped, and murdered people in the kingdom with the investigation. I’m looking forward to seeing where this goes next. It is left on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Narrator- 4.5 stars- he has wonderful differentiations in the voices, great acting, and was easy to listen to. I did find bumping the playback speed up to 1.25x was better.

Typically I’ll read romance but I have been known to read a fantasy novel or two. Heir of Magic sucked me in and did not let go. The world creating and character building in fantastic. The story weaving draws you in and leaves you wanting to know what happens next. It’s very rare when a story leaves you with an ending that makes you want to pick up the next story and read more immediately. So much I want to know, I have this image need to know what happens next!

Kudos to J.D. Ruffin for spinning a tale that is so fantastical that you find your self submerged in a world where everything seems real and you feel like you can reach out and touch the world and it’s inhabitants. You can see, hear and taste what he is describing and feel the prickling along your skin of the magic in the air.

I will most definitely be reading the next installment of this series soon. And if you get a chance listening to the audiobook while reading along truly takes the story to a whole new level of amazement.

A wonderful beginning to a well-written high fantasy series. Engaging characters and tightly written story that took me right in, and kept me hooked until the end. The thing that struck me most, is J.D. Ruffin is an amazing writer, he has that gift with words I rarely come across. His descriptions are magical, enough that you feel the setting, but never overdone. His prose is crisp and paints a vivid picture. He weaves in a romantic subplot without overpowering the others. I just loved this story. It ends on a cliffhanger that makes you frustrated but in a way that you're looking forward to the next installment. His characters feel real. I will definitely buy all the books in the series and look forward to following the story. Poor Jess!

All in all an enjoyable read.

There were a few cringe lines and unlikely/contradictory events, but also some funny ones.

I didn’t really like Jess’ plot all the time, it was predictable and cliché, especially with her getting mad that her dad thinks she needs guidance… whle she’s a teenager. You do need guidance. But it wasn’t too bad and annoying.

Having already read book 2 and part of book 3, this book is definitely slightly more boring and generic, but it’s not bad. I’d say stick around for the rest of the series, cause it does get better and more exciting. The ending of this one is so abrupt, you have to read the next one to get a satisfying climax anyway.

This book contains a healthy dose of political intrigue; this includes: arranged marriages, conflict between countries, conniving queens…
There is some romance, runaways, plotting, a good amount of mystery, and betrayals. There remain several questions at the end and I can’t help but want to continue the story. My TBR just grew by another few books.
The characters are well developed and the plot is executed with good pacing. The multiple points of views with alternate storylines was well handled.
