He didn’t ask for cartilaginous ass plates, but military science made him a warrior. And late at night when the nightmares come of innocents killed or twerking an enemy to death in a dark tunnel, he tells himself he did it to protect the other wombats in his unit. He sucks it up, soldiers on and does his duty. He’s Cecil the Combat Wombat, and he’s seen some shit, man.
Action…drama…brash talking marsupials…honey badger on wombat action…Russia…genetic experiments…like there isn’t much that this book didn’t have to love. If you liked Guardians of thr Galaxy 3, this is right up your alley. Dundee, the combat wombat, is one furry, bad ass little bugger. And he hates talking to his assigned therapist. But even the baddest animals need to practice self-care. The situations and lore were totally enjoyable and the dialogue between the characters was priceless. And it’s a quick read, which is important for stories like this, as to not overstay its welcome. Tons of fun. Highly recommended. #combatwombat
Combat Wombats are cool! I loved the world building, and found it interesting that the location was Australia. Just not Australia as we know it! The characters are being fleshed-out pretty well, so that adds another dimension of interest for rabid readers. I've already recommended this one to others to read. I'm definitely going to continue this series!
As you might have guessed from the title, the protagonist is a wombat. It's 200 years in the future and science has figured out how to modify certain animals to be bipedal and have human intelligence and speech. Cecil is a combat wombat, and due to his size and physiology he serves in a role similar to "tunnel rats" in the Vietnam war: clearing tunnels and caves of the enemy.
It was fun and I would like for it to have been longer.
This was a cute short story/novella about an uplifted sapient wombat and his buddies in a war against communists agitators in Australia. It was quick paced and funny. I'm looking forward to more installments in the series.
The only character that had any depth was Cecil. The rest were just place holders for the scenes. But it's a short story so not unsurprising in that. I did learn that wombats poop out cubes, which is a rather interesting factoid.
The eBook was formatted well with no obvious errors in spelling or grammar.
This was a fun short-story with a great world-building on an original premise. I mean seriously - combat wombats -- who knew? The possibilities are endless.
It's 200 years in the future and scientists have modified some animals to be more humanlike. There is just enough of the history of the science of it to keep the story moving instead of dragging it down with too much extra detail. The story moves fast and is quite entertaining for a war tale.
I look forward to reading the other books in the series.
Well worth the price of admission. My lunch break today was made better by Cecil's adventure as the pointy end of the spear. The only thing missing were monkeys.
Talk about a relatable character! Every combat veteran, (Especially the enlisted veterans) will immediately recognize and relate to the humanity in the main character of this short, but very expressive and visceral story.
As a vet, I appreciated the detail (especially about the E-4 Mafia!), and the ever present hazard that butterbars pose upon their units. BRAVO, I will look forward to future works by this author!
…and the grunt happens to be a wombat. Rollicking military sci-fi short from the guy who wrote the book on Waffle Haus skirmishes. If Sgt. Rock were a marsupial, he would be Cecil.
This was a fun, unusual take on a war story. I really enjoyed it. There were the usual war story tropes, but having a wombat as the main character made them feel fresh.
I was expecting a humorous tale about cute little animals in the periphery of war. What I received was a story about vicious, intellect enhanced animals fighting on the side of right. It was a quick read but enjoyable.
Mr. Grayson has a command of the language, idiom, and subject matter which he employs with entertaining effect. So glad he took the time to put this story out for the rest of us to enjoy.
A fun little romp, with some interesting twist and turns. Kelly Grayson does have a way with words, and he shows just how creative he can be! :-) Highly recommended.
Yes, I admit it. The cover art got me. How could it not? Coupled with the catchy title and I was had. Needless to say, this book delivered a star on all categories. Entertaining with action, humor and pacing. More, please...
I picked up Kelly Grayson's fiction after reading his non-fictional accounts of his professional life. He did not disappoint! His subject matter is, uh, unconventional, but I'll happily read anything he writes.
