About the author

David Ray Wilkerson was an American Christian evangelist, best known for his book The Cross and the Switchblade. He was the founder of the addiction recovery program Teen Challenge, and founding pastor of the non-denominational Times Square Church in New York.

Wilkerson's widely distributed sermons, such as "A Call to Anguish", are known for being direct and frank against apostasy and serious about making the commitment to obey Jesus' teachings. He emphasized such Christian beliefs as God's holiness and righteousness, God's love toward humans and especially Christian views of Jesus. Wilkerson tried to avoid categorizing Christians into distinct groups according to the denomination to which they belong.

Wilkerson was killed in a car crash in Texas on April 27, 2011.

Amazing book

I have just finished reading this book. I have both the print version and the ebook as well. I would highly recommend this book to every single Christian out there.

These are a collection of sermons written and delivered over the course of years by the late David Wilkerson, a Pentecostal preacher and founder of Teen Challenge. There are 50 sermons and some of them are quite powerful and stirring which God has used to stir my own soul. Wilkerson didn't originally believe in assurance of salvation like a number of people in the Pentecostal denomination. Therefore, if you seek out some of his older messages outside of this collection, you may be shocked to see him make such claims. However, in later years, he developed a better understanding of this topic from studying the scriptures and with the help of reading Puritan authors of long ago. If you are used to expository preaching, you may be surprised to find these sermons do not dig deep, long and hard, into the scriptures, going verse by verse. This is due in part to the Pentecostal tradition of preaching, but there is another factor to consider which is this: Wilkerson was the founding pastor of Times Square Church in downtown New York City. God had led him to establish a church within the theater area which, at the time, was surrounded by porn, prostitution, drug addicts, thefts, the homeless, etc. The heart of Jesus calls out to sinners and the hopeless, the broken, downtrodden. Such individuals did and still do find their way into this church and get transformed by the Gospel. It is far easier to reach these people where they are at than spend months going through one book in the Bible. Jesus's ministry could have consisted of deep scriptural teaching, but it mostly consisted of speaking to common people in the fields and streets, using terms and symbolism they could understand and relate to, (This isn't a criticism of expository preaching.) and many of them were broken and had been kicked to the margins of society, in need of God's love. Wilkerson preached to the prostitutes, drug users, drug dealers, homeless, and downtrodden in the pews. He also preached to men and women who knew Jesus and needed to be encouraged, strengthened in the Lord, or to be shaken out of complacency and a backslidden state. He followed the Spirit's leading, and it shows in a number of the messages collected in this book.
