I’m surprised how much I enjoyed this. I haven’t read a new fantasy series in what feels like forever. Likeable characters, interesting world, great lore, and a good ending.

The author offered me an audible code to give this a listen, and I’m so glad he did. The narration by Jamie Treselyan was fantastic work.

This book is honestly a wild ride. It’s long, but it doesn’t end up feeling long enough. It starts in a somewhat grounded fantasy world. There is magic, but it comes with the landscape of the world. Then however, it turns into a full on science fiction / fantasy mix as the mystery opens up. I won’t spoil anything, but it does end up coming together and making sense.

Darius, a boy with visions and unbelievable strength, receives an invite to the Training Grounds. It is a prestigious school, so he isn’t sure why he’s been accepted, but he agrees to go. With that comes the general growing pains of new places, new faces, and learning new things. In my opinion, these are some of the most unique classes and school backdrop since the Boy Who Lived. Each class gives background on the world, as well as helping us to understand that the students are progressing, and I didn’t feel bored for a single minute.

The school does feature a tournament that feels very Triwizard Tournament meets The Hunger Games, as unexpected deaths are almost expected as kids battle for the cash prize. This did feel a little underwhelming to me, as it got a bit washed out by everything else going on, but it was cool to see the kids compete. Also it wasn’t the climax, so it ended up holding its own.

The novel comes to a pinnacle with the most scifi/fantasy blend for one hell of a climax. I do wish it had a less cliffhanger ending, but it did make me want even more! Personally a 5/5*, another great.

“We’ve witnessed impossible things since crossing the bridge into this campus.”

The Training Grounds. What a wild ride!
This book had all the works. I laughed, I cried and I cheered while reading this perfect mashup of all the series that I love. For me this was Harry Potter meets The Last Airbender meets The Dark Tower meets The Hunger Games. It had that dystopian feel of “the world has moved on” while also giving those perfect old time fantasy vibes.

This had an amazing plot and I loved all the subplots just as much. I also adored the characters & their relationships with each other. Watching the group of friends grow together & learn from one another was just as rewarding as the main story line which was fantastic.

Darius is a young farm boy who finds himself on the road to the most elite training academy with his best friend, Simon. After enrolling they meet the rest of their crew - Oakes, the blacksmith, Adelaide, the archer, & Millicent, the wielder. Their talents mixed with Darius’s swordplay & Simon’s strategic brain make them a nearly unbeatable combination. Never mind Darius’s affinity for visions he can’t understand & the secret whispers only Millicent can hear when she meets him. Their secrets aren’t the only ones being kept within the confines of the school, though. Dean Anders has quite a lot he isn’t telling his students. It’s only together that this team of friends can unravel the truth.

Mages, immortals, apocalyptic visions, battles, tournaments, character growth, slow burn romance, cliffhanger ending. It’s all here in these pages.

Pacing the floors for book 2!!

This book had elements from a lot of my favorite books and movies. The writing was good, the characters were interesting and funny and the action was intense. I don't love school settings or teen drama, luckily there wasn't too much drama. A lot of the book builds to the Prestige and that was a pretty good time. That point onward basically rocks and the book goes into hyper speed. Not to say the beginning was boring or anything but it really goes quick. Highly recommend this one.

I really enjoyed this listen. The narrator did a great job with bringing the various characters to life. Some of the voices were just perfect and it was easy to tell the different characters apart.

The world building was interesting, an elite training school which had students with various talents competing against each other. It was detailed and well thought out. The author really crams in a lot of action and I was completely hooked.

The story is written in the third person from multiple perspectives, which I always enjoy as I feel you get to understand the characters. I thought the main characters were written well, and they were likeable... well, most of them are!

I loved the twisted plot lines (I don't want to give too much away) and I really wanted to figure out what was going on. I was rooting for Darius and his friends throughout the story. I was also glad when certain people got their comeuppance!

There are lots of interesting themes being explored and it is a nice coming of age and finding your place in the world kind of story.

For a debut, this is so detailed and well written. The story is engaging, makes sense and flows nicely

Overall, it's a really enjoyable listen. I am looking forward to reading book 2 in the series.

Huge thanks to the author and Love Books Tours for providing a copy of the book to review.

A little bit Harry Potter, and little bit Percy Jackson, but for an older audience. If you are looking for a new fantasy adventure series, I highly recommend this one!

This story takes place in a very distant future after our own society has been destroyed. The Training Grounds is an elite training academy for young adults who possess rare talents. Recruits are gathered from all over to hone their skills in swordsmanship, magic wielding, archery, blacksmithing, engineering, and more.

Our main character Darius comes from a humble background. Raised by his mother after his father is killed by bandits when he was young, they work together on a farm owned by a wealthy baron. He competes in sword fighting tournaments, an area where he is exceptionally skilled. His life changes when he receives his acceptance letter to the training grounds, and together with his very smart, very nerdy best friend Simon, he sets off on a life-changing adventure.

The Training Grounds is home to a myriad of characters, some that become like family to Darius, while others become enemies. But Darius soon learns that many of those that surround him, both friend and foe, have secrets. Some of those secrets are deadly.

This book has everything needed to make a great fantasy adventure! It has magic, sword fighting, found family, mysterious hooded figures, and a touch of angsty romance.

I would rate this book pg-13, so while there are themes in it that are more adult than the aforementioned children's books, it would be appropriate for high school age and up. There isn't gore or smut, but there are scenes where weapons are drawn and blood is spilled.

I am looking forward to the next book!

This is a long epic tale but I read through it quickly. I had a hard time putting this book down. The author has a talent for writing engaging and natural dialogue and weaves humor throughout the book. I enjoyed the mystery and action in the book as well. Has some Harry Potter elements but is darker and more mature. Highly recommend this one.

This was a mix of classic fantasy academy tropes with an unexpected sci-fi twist that worked out in the best way. Right from the beginning, I was intrigued by Darius, an underdog with mysterious visions and a lot more to him than meets the eye. The world-building was extensive, and this is a longer read, but the mystery of the world kept me invested in the story. I really enjoyed how the classes and conversations organically revealed the world and society's setup, especially the subtle tensions between power structures and the hinted-at religious hierarchy. The battle scenes were well-written, making for an intense and suspenseful read.

The narration style was a bit exaggerated—like it tried to end every line with dramatic flair—which occasionally distracted from the prose. However, I was really impressed with the different voices they had created; it really brought the characters to life and it did not take away from the overall experience. There were moments where the pacing felt like a rollercoaster; it would drag at times but then pick up with a suspenseful climax only to drag again. I did appreciate how the story did not shy away from Darius's inner struggles, and how it slowly built him into the warrior he was meant to become. If you are into epic fantasy academies, character-driven plots, and a twist of dystopian science fiction, this book is worth picking up. That ending definitely left me curious about the next book.

This was SUCH a fun sci-fi/fantasy read that I didn’t know I needed. I listened to it as an audiobook and really enjoyed the narration by Jamie Treselyan!

This took me a minute to get into but before too long, I was emotionally attached to Darius and his friends. Especially Simon. Simon broke me 😭.

The story was easy to follow, which I appreciate because there are often times with fantasy that I find myself confused about the world or entire story in general. It gave me Harry Potter vibes as I was reading it, (which still holds a special place in my heart) so to find a series that gives me those same feelings just gives me so much joy!

I will definitely be reading the next book, The Training Grounds: From the Ashes!

I really enjoyed this book. The premise was excellent. The world building was extremely well done. The school was a wonderful idea.

The book was written well and flowed finely. There were no plot holes or unanswered questions. It was great!

I loved the characters. Darius was a good kid and tried to do the right thing whenever he could. His friends Millicent, Adelaide, Oakes and Simon were great and they were a brilliant group. I'm not sure how I feel about some characters. It doesn't matter though as they all worked well in the grand scheme of things

The book is written in third person from multiple points of view. This worked very well as we got to see different parts of the story evolve along with different characters.

I really recommend this. Fantastic read.

The Training Grounds mystery of the immortal by Jason Clark.
Book one of the training grounds.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the cover and blurb of this book. I loved Darius, Simon, Oakes, Adelaide, and Millicent. I wasn't sure how I felt about Dean. I didn't trust him. really didn't like Belladonna or Donavan at all. I loved Skeet and how he was. This book has everything i love. Mages, immortals, apocalyptic visions, battles, and tournaments. It felt like I was there watching everything happen. I can't believe this is a debut. I love the writing style and the story. What a cliffhanger. Please hurry with book 2. I definitely recommend this book.

This is the 1st book in a series and is a bit slow to start. The main characters are teenage kids with all the problems, emotional upheavals, and petty likes and dislikes that most teens go through. You get an assortment of various adults with their own agenda trying to run and control things. It is a fictional account of how power and Greed seem to destroy all that is good. Narrator does a Great job with the various characters voices (love the scottish sounding voices) and the entire storyline!!

It developed over time and made it easy to follow and had me tense and worried in all the right spots! The characters were easy to like, and you are rooting for them from the get go.
So happy book 2 is already out cause that cliffhanger has me worried!!

The Training Grounds : Mystery of the Immortals is an action & adventure fantasy novel by the author Jason Clark, published in April 2023. The protagonist of the tale is Darius, a powerful young man, who joins the Training Grounds with his friend Simon. They form a formidable team with Millicent, Adelaide, and Oakes, but soon discover hidden agendas and doubt the head of the institution, Dean Anders. Their unstoppable skills and strategic thinking make them an unstoppable team. It is now up to this daring gang to decipher Darius’s vision and learn the truth about their world. Visions that show the reaper, a weapon with cataclysmic consequences, in action. But will he and his pals be able to unearth the truth before it’s too late, in between training, finding love, and taking classes? Get the answers by reading the book right now. The minute attention to detail in “The Training Grounds” is what makes it unique. Readers are gripped by the suspense and mystery that Clark skillfully creates by deftly weaving together complex plot strands. The novel is impossible to put down as new discoveries and surprising turns are revealed in every chapter. The novel moves at an ideal speed, alternating between intense action scenes and slower, more contemplative passages. The story moves along well, and Clark’s writing evokes a full spectrum of feelings, from heartbreaking grief and overwhelming wonder to joy and expectation. In addition, Clark’s study of immortality digs deeply into philosophical issues pertaining to existence, meaning, and the fallout from eschewing mortality. Readers are left thinking about the complexities of existence long after they have completed reading the book because it encourages reflection and thought. For lovers of mystery, fantasy, and adventure, Clark’s novel is a must-read because of his skillful storytelling, endearing characters, and gripping plot. I heartily urge anyone looking for a truly remarkable reading experience to pick it up. Get ready to be taken to a place where immortality conceals mysteries beyond comprehension. The book is a tad long at over 500 pages, but it’s well worth the read. Highly recommended from my side.

I was sent a copy of this audiobook for review.

Darius is invited to a prestigious training academy in Merchant Village. He is unsure why he was asked to attend as he is a poor farming boy with no special skills (unless you count the mysterious visions, he has about death). He along with his best friend accept the offer to train and hopefully make a better future for themselves.

During training Darius makes friends with a skilled archer, a talented blacksmith, and a powerful wielder of the elements. He also gets advice and assistance from the Academy Dean who takes a surprising interest in him. When Darius’ visions start to show him, a lethal weapon known as the Reaper, he and his friends band together to uncover what the Reaper is and what consequences it might have for the world. What Darius hadn’t planned on was discovering the truth about an ancient catastrophe that could have apocalyptic repercussions for everyone’s future. Will Darius find the answers to stop the devastation it’s too late?

I listened to this book and felt the narrator was perfect for this story. Their tone and voice choices for the characters were spot on and brought me into the narrative from the beginning. The book was a brilliant mix of magical fantasy and a coming-of-age story. I was impressed with the creative world-building and magical elements of the different spirit wielding for earth, air and water. The inclusion of a skills competition which showcased the academy’s student battling each other in hand-to-hand combat as well as magical manipulation added depth to the story. The overarching mystery of what occurred in the past that all knowledge disappeared before a certain point and the ominous visions that Darius had of the Reaper ensured that the story kept me engaged and intrigued by what was going to happen next. I liked the coming age aspect of the story and the elements of found family as the band of friends came together to discover the truth and compete in the tournament. Overall, it was a compelling first book in this series and I look forward to reading the next instalment.

If you enjoy reading books like Hunger Games and Harry Potter, then you will be captivated by the storytelling in "The Training Grounds: Mystery of the Immortals". This fascinating work of fiction is expressively within by the author, Jason Clark. Even though this is the first novel that I have read from the author, I am more than impressed by his work. He novel is brimming with expressiveness, creativity, and descriptiveness. It paints a vivid picture of the scenes as they unfold. I give it 5 stars!

In "The Training Grounds: Mystery of the Immortals", Darius is our protagonist. He is gifted with the ability to see future events. Most times, these mysterious visions are cryptic, and they illustrate some type of pending doom. Nonetheless, Darius is born for greatness, even though he doesn’t view himself as possessing any useful talents or traits. As such, he is surprised when he is selected to attend an influential training academy, designed to trained gifted youths. He and his best friend, Simon, attend the academy where they meet other talented students. Along the way, they make new friends. Each of the secondary characters has a distinct and unique background story of their own, and each of them has their own agenda for being in the academy. For example, Dean Anders has quite a lot he isn’t revealing to his students about his true intentions. The secrets add a hint of mystery and suspense to the novel. They kept me hooked. I even like the cliffhanger ending. This just means that the adventure will continue.

All in all, this book has the perfect combination of adventure, action, humor, suspense and fantasy. I recommend it to all fantasy lovers. It’s a must-read. I enjoyed reading it, and I’m certain you will too.

The Training Grounds by Jason Clark is a sci-fi/fantasy novel that is set in a future world. A world where electronics and guns do not exist, and wars and fights are won by swords and element-wielding magic.
We follow the story of Darius, a farm boy who's been invited to attend the elite Training Grounds at Merchant Valley, but not just him, his best friend Simon has been accepted to attend too, Simon actually applied and it becomes clear very early on that he only got accepted because the Dean wanted Darius.

The story has a lot of world-building, which it needs as it is a complicated world we are transformed into. No aeroplanes, guns or phones in this world, but that's not to say it didn't at some point exist.

It's a story with a lot going on and is fast-paced. A forged friendship with an archer, blacksmith, and wielder makes this team a formidable group to go against.

We touch on friendships, young love, enemies and lost knowledge.
Why is the Dean of the academy so keen to learn all about Darius? Who are the mysterious folk in cloaks trying to kidnap Darius, and what is the Reaper?

I thought the whole book was about Darius winning the tournament so he could go back home to his mother and buy the farm they live on - but that event happens halfway through the book, so there's more. It doesn't end with the dance that has a will-they, won't they moment. No, the book ends with an epic fight which leaves you absolutely flabbergasted.

The book is not written from any one POV, it's fast-paced with a lot of world-building and background story for many of the characters, not just the main ones.

The Training Grounds: Mystery of the Immortals ( Book 1 of 2 ), by Jason Clark is somewhat of an epic, quite a long read at 511 pages, but the quality of writing is such that it doesn't feel long at all.

It's a Fantasy novel with some Sci-fi elements and lots of great adventure and some magic thrown in. It's captivating, it's mysterious, it's engrossing. Everything you'd look for in this type of novel.

The characters have great depth and development, each with their own strengths and failings, and the world they inhabit is expertly woven with meticulous attention to detail, enabling the reader to form the scenes in the mind clearly.

The plot flowed well and the storyline, intricate, and I read this in just three sittings.

This is not just your average Fantasy novel. It's a novel that explores deep thought, emotion and meaning. It explores existentialism, morality and immorality and will leave the reader pondering age old questions of existence.

So all in all, I found this to be a real top notch read

A big 5 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

“In a brutal future world, where swords settle disputes and those who can control the elements are the most feared warriors, get ready for a fantastic escape from reality.”

If JK Rowling and Rebecca Yarros had a baby, and Suzanne Collins and Stephen King had a baby, and those babies grew up, fell in love, got married and had a baby, then that baby grew up and wrote a book…

So many great elements to this book: Characters with deep and mysterious back stories, distinct personalities and talents, world-building that is complex, but not overwhelming, a plot that feels complete, but leaves you excited for more.

I especially liked the religious history, where politics and faith merge.

The only thing I didn’t love was the audiobook narrator. Every character came off as a charicature. “Okay, now do an Irish accent. No, MORE Irish. Okay, cool. Now do a Russian accent. No, MORE Russian. Okay, cool.”

I’ll definitely be looking forward to From the Ashes.

Thanks to Jason Clark for this magical offering.

A farm boy with anger issues, his cerebral best friend, a young blacksmith, an aristocratic archer and a mysterious magic wielder all converge as the new intake at a magical academy. One with a penchant for not all of its students making it through the year alive!

You'll probably get "vibes" from several YA series that you've either read/watched before but the author manages to keep things fresh (and blood thirsty). There are epic quests, enigmatic teachers, backstabbing fellow students and an intricate plot, full of twists. I loved the world building and there never seemed to be huge information dumps.

I really enjoyed watching this ragtag group of friends bond together but still hide secrets from each other. Learning more about the Dean and his friends really was an eye opener!

Darius and co are great illustrations of friends becoming family. Don't think that just because this book is aimed at YA that there are no big themes covered.

Please be aware that some themes may be unsuitable for all YA and there is mention of S/A of a characters mother.

TLDR: I think reading this in physical/kindle would be better than listening to the audio 😬

I was kindly gifted the ALC of this book to review, and whilst I did actually really enjoy the story itself, I really struggled to get past the narrator.

I’ve learned to love audio books over the last year, and I know narrators can be a bit hit or miss sometimes, but I really just felt like my attention kept getting caught on the voice/pitch/inflection of words and I found it quite distracting.. to the point that I found it irritating and I’ve now written two paragraphs about it 🤣

When book 2 is released I’d like to re-read it in physical/kindle and think I’d enjoy it a lot more, but it’s hard to tell from just the audio.

The book is giving YA, academic, found family, dystopian, magical abilities, hidden history, good v’s evil, trials and champions.

This story has everything I wanted & more. Jason does an exceptional job at building the characters and relationships, as well as the history of the world. I enjoyed the magic system, training & fight scenes. I was pleasantly surprised that the main group of characters form such strong bonds with one another & even romance begins to grow. The mystery in the plot kept me guessing & intrigued. The story gets very exciting in the second half. I strongly urge you to have the second book ready to read!

Perfect for fans of Fantasy & Sci Fi. Great for lovers of action & adventure with a dash of mystery. If you enjoy storylines centered around schools for individuals with special abilities. Good for those who don’t mind violence & love elemental magic.

Good if you don’t
like or don’t need
“spice” but do want romance.

I've read some of the other reviews before writing this. That being said I didn't have a problem with the narrator, I think he did a good job with changing to the different characters. The narrator gave the book some depth and more immersive. But I agree with the person that started this was similar to Harry Potter. I'm not a Harry Potter fan at all. This book didn't keep me interested in it at all. It was a struggle to get through it. The characters were not intriguing or lovable. When Simon died, I didn't care. And I also agreed with the reviewer that stated that the book started slow. My friend told me that it would be a series of books, but it didn't have to be this slow. I told my friend that in a good book series, each book should be a good stand alone book. But if you want to understand all of the references, that is when reading the series in order comes into play.

The Training Grounds by Clark was full of surprises and there were many things I loved about this book. For one, I'll always enjoy reading about a group of unlikely friends who all have their own pasts, traumas, and dreams, and who come together to create something better. The backstories were carefully woven into the story and I enjoyed learning new fantastical things about the world as it opened up. The mystery Clark so cleverly uses to string us along made me want to read faster. So many things were unpredictable but no spoilers here — you gotta read it for yourself!

Looking forward to more from this author.

This is a really enjoyable start to a great new series. It’s a wonderful mixture of fantasy and science fiction and I enjoyed the world building and the lore which we learned throughout this novel. Darius is an intriguing main character - he’s angry and determined, has a lot to prove and doesn’t always weigh up the risks of his decisions. His group of friends - Simon, Oakes, Millicent and Adelaide - really help keep the balance in the story. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next
