Blind dates, set-ups, online dating—I've tried it all, and so far none of it has led me to true love. And that's why I've come to the conclusion that romance is overrated, and it's time for me to swear off dating forever. To prove how serious I am, I've even told my roommate to cease her matchmaking efforts. No more men for me, thank you. I don't need to be in a relationship in order to feel fulfilled. I'm a librarian, after all, and I believe that a good book and a cozy blanket can rival the company of a man any day.

But when my ex-boyfriend gets engaged to a woman I've never met and invites me to the wedding, I have to put my plan on hold. I'm not going to the wedding alone, so obviously I need a date. The problem is, I've only got two-and-a-half months to find someone. If I don't, I'll be stuck going with my parents—and that's not happening.

Thank goodness my roommate has one more guy in mind, and he's perfect for me—or so she says. At this point, my standards couldn't get much lower. As long as he doesn't fraternize with amphibians or treat me like one of his gym buddies, he might just be my perfect match!

Jessica Leigh Johnson has been writing and creating stories since she was a young girl. After the death of her son Ethan in 2006, she decided to use her love of writing to minister to others who may be struggling with their faith after a significant loss. Her first book, "Do You Trust Me?" tells her story in detail, focusing mainly on the damage done to her faith after such a tragedy, and offers hope to others experiencing similar loss.

For the past six years, Jessica has authored the parenting column in IG Living magazine, which is a resource for those who rely on infused immunoglobulin products for their health and survival. She also occasionally contributes articles to the IG Living online blog. Some of her articles are featured in the compilation book entitled "Chronic Inspiration," published by IG Living.

In late 2022, Jessica was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma (breast cancer), which was not on her to-do list, but she's chosen to accept the challenge and push forward with humor (when possible) and courage, and try to bring a sense of "normalcy" to breast cancer, since it affects 1 in 8 women during their lifetime.

Jessica's true passion, however, is romance. Her short story entitled, "The House on Mirror Lake" was published in the anthology "Sweet Summer Love" in 2015. Look for this story to become a full-length novel in 2024! Her first full-length Christian fiction novel, "Fixed Up" (a romantic comedy) released in April 2023.

Y’all!!!! I’m so excited to tell you about this book! I loved it so much! Not just ‘for a debut novel’ but as a ‘new fave author on my will-always-read’ list!

Megan has lots of deal-breakers that have made it difficult for her roommate Nora to set her up with someone that will last longer than one very short date. But with the calendar clicking off days between now and her ex’s wedding, Megan needs a date that will show all concerned parties that she’s happy without said ex. Problem is, Nora really only has one other guy left, and to say that this next set-up goes well would be … um… generous. Sparks do fly, but they may not be the ones Megan was hoping for haha!

Meg and Garrett’s blind date disaster turned tentative friendship (for the sake of their mutual friends who are dating) is just everything delightful about romcoms. There are some really sweet moments between them as well as some hilarious ones, and I wholeheartedly enjoyed the back-and-forth of their relationship, bickering and all. It’s like the best of enemies-to-more meets friends-to-more, and the combination works perfectly. The delicious chemistry doesn’t hurt, either. And oh how I loved Garrett – his swooniness and his steadiness, as well as Meg’s ability to absolutely drive him insane.

The faith thread in Fixed Up is so well done. It’s integrated organically into the story, particularly with Meg’s character, and never feels preachy. Rather, Meg’s relationship with God is written as an extension of who she is and the journey she’s on – and I must say that her dad’s advice to her toward the end of the story left me a little choked up. I loved how naturally Meg and other characters pray throughout the book, but never felt like it stopped the story for a sermon. If you love the way Toni Shiloh writes her characters’ faith threads, then you’ll love how Jessica Leigh Johnson does too.

Bottom Line: Right from the beginning of Fixed Up, I adored Jessica Leigh Johnson’s writing voice. It’s witty and snarky and endearing with spark-filled romantic tension, a sweet-but-never-preachy faith thread, and stellar comedic timing. The characters are nicely layered and easily lovable, and I could easily spend more time with them in future books. The dating disasters scattered throughout the book bring easy laughter, and I smiled all the way through this fun read. My heart was touched, too, by the message of God’s unconditional love for us. This author has a new fan in me, and I can’t wait for whatever she writes next! Perfect for fans of Becky Wade, Toni Shiloh, Courtney Walsh, and Pepper Basham.

Meg is looking for a date to her ex-boyfriends wedding. She allows her roommate, Nora, to set her up on several blind dates. Meg has a few quirky traits like finding fault with a weak handshake, or being overly concerned how socks are folded. She seems to find fault with every guy that she is set-up with. She is very matter of fact when answering questions and often doesn’t realize that she has said something that could be taken as an insult.

She goes out with Garrett who is a friend of Milo’s(Nora’s boyfriend). They immediately start getting on each others nerves. This makes for a hilarious rom-com story. I loved this book, and all the characters!

As Meg has various awkward dates, I found myself rooting for her to find her happily ever after. I highly recommend this book! I was given an advanced digital edition of this book.

Cute

Funny and sweet and just a great book. There were a few scenes that actually made me laugh loudly, and that hasn't happened in such a long time. This would be wonderful to read when you're feeling down, because it will lift your mood fast!

A fun story about opposites getting together. Almost to the end, Meg and Garrett spend most of their time arguing...until they don't. A sweet theme of loving people for who they are.

interesting and enjoyable

At first, the main character irked me to no end, which of course was the point. But I enjoyed her character development and how she discovers things about herself and who she is in Christ. It’s not a typical rom com; there is more depth, particularly about how a person’s childhood and family affects who they are. I found that very interesting. I like to read light-hearted books in between heavier ones, and this fit that, but it is one that I will also remember.

Ok, I admit I judged this book by its cover and let it sit on my TBR for ages because I personally didn't think it looked very professional. However, once I finally picked it up, I enjoyed it so much! After a blind date disaster, the MCs were so annoyed with each other that I just had to keep turning pages to see what would dissolve the tension. It might be easy for the reader to get annoyed by how rude Meg and Garrett are to each other, but if you stick with it, they eventually learn to put aside their differences. I loved how they kept being forced to spend time together since they had mutual friends. I also liked how all the characters were Christians and that they worked on solving their problems through a Christian world view. This really was a cute, Christian, contemporary romance that I think others would also enjoy.

Delightful Story!

This was such a delightful story! I remember being in my twenties and feeling (and doing) awkward and embarrassing things on dates. Now I can look back at them and laugh. Meg was a relatable and fun character, and it was especially meaningful that she learns important lessons along the way. I truly enjoyed this story!

The story was like a train wreck that you couldn’t look away from. Poor Meg was all over the place emotionally and I would cringe and laugh at her crazy and outlandish behaviors and the dates that she experienced. At one point, I may have actually yelled at her, like girl what are you doing?! haha I think this character was written well with the intention of perhaps being socially awkward, low self-image, having unrealistic expectations in others, but also going through the process of realizing her worth in Christ. She was a mirror image of her mom so it was funny to see that play out, and I loved her dad! Wanting his daughter to see her worth and wanting her future husband to see that too. One point I agreed that perhaps Garrett was too good for her because I was thinking, this Meg is crazy! But I always found myself l anxious to pick the book back up to see what happens. I enjoyed Megs character development and the heavy gospel element it included. Overall, a fun and entertaining story.

There was so much to like about this book! I enjoyed the atypical romance where they didn’t get along at first but then became friends. Their first date was sadly hilarious! I liked the main character and her struggles and how she finally grew to accept going to the wedding without a date. I thought her pet peeve of balled up socks was so funny, especially with how it tied in to her aha moment. I would have liked to see more of their friendship progression shown instead of summed up or skipped over. I did not like it when he got mad at her for feeling confused. He’s the one who kept saying they were just friends and never had the courage to ask her out again, then he got all mad and went out with someone else. Even though they worked out in the end, I felt like that part of the story was unnecessary and showed a big character weakness for him. But overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to more stories by this author!

This was simply endearing. The main character was so relatable! The humor was on point (cheesy at times, but I didn't even mind). This was like a hallmark movie in book form - just enough angst to make it a page turner, but predictable and safe for a comforting, cozy afternoon read. If you need a break from dark, heavy material, this is the perfect book for you. The part that made it "Christian" was the only lame part - it's sad when you can do away with that thread entirely and still have a stand alone story. God doesn't exist to make us happy, make us feel loved and comfortable in our own skin, etc. We exist to bring Him glory and have relationship with Him. Anyways, that part could've been either abandoned or given its proper weight, in my opinion.

I would give this 5 stars except that it took me a bit to get into it. BUT let me tell you. Once I did? Um, I couldn’t put this book down. Literally had to stay up last night until I finished.

One of the main reasons I loved this so much was the faith elements. Like real, applicable faith from more than one character. And growth from the main character. And acknowledged flaws.

Also, I loveeeee me some unrequited love. Give me all the tension and miscommunications and love/hate/enemy vibes. I mean, as long as it works out, obviously.

Overall, highly recommend!

This book was recommended in a Facebook group I am in, and the person who posted about it said it was humorous. I had never heard of the author, but gave it a try since I like funny books. And it was quite amusing, yet had some depth and Christian content.

I liked both main characters, and loved the interplay between them. It is definitely worth reading.

Easy and fun read!

This book was recommended as a "can't put it down" CF. So easy to get into! I laughed out loud a lot, and found myself growing attached to the characters, pulling for them in their complicated situations. Very fun, adorable, messy romantic situation- and really clean, too! First time reading from this author, and I can't wait for more!!

Such a unique funny story. Meg was often cringe worthy but in the end she was much improved.
Good thing too because I often I didn't know how Garrett put up with her. But she found her worth in Christ and her attitude kept improving. I hope this author continues to write, looking forward to her next book!

A book lovers Facebook group recommended this book a while back when it was free on Amazon. It was cute. At first the main character was so annoying I didn’t know if I could keep going, but her personality was redeemed throughout the book. By then climax, I was very into the outcome. All the character had to grow on me especially the main two.

Read on Kindle. No swearing or cursing.

FIXED UP is a lighthearted Christian rom-com about a woman on a quest to find her perfect match. Think blind dates, dating apps, and plenty of ex-boyfriend drama (or perceived drama). It’s charming, funny, and yes, cringey in the best way, as Meg hilariously misreads just about everyone around her. A delightful read with heart and humor! Highly recommended!

sweet romantic comedy

This sweet romance had me chuckle quite often. I loved how faith is intertwined especially toward the end. I love the predictable books, they make me happy. I’ll definitely be looking forward to Mrs. Johnson’s next book.

Goes great with mac & cheese and hotdogs

One of my absolute favorite things about Jess as a person is her sense of humor & it thankfully comes through in her first novel! There were also some tears & her way of showing how God sees us makes for a pretty perfect book! I loved it!

-Blind Date
-Online Dating

I really wanted to love this one. It had some funny and sweet moments, but the miscommunication and denial of feelings lasted too long for me. It had potential, but maybe I’m not the right reader for this one. I did like the overarching biblical themes.

Can I record that I read my own book? Because I think I've read it at least five times this month, checking for errors. I really need help meeting my yearly reading challenge this year (stinking cancer), so yes, this book counts! I think it's great, by the way ;)
