Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is an American playwright, screenwriter, and comic book writer best known for his work for Marvel Comics and for the television series Glee, Big Love, Riverdale, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He is Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics.
Aguirre-Sacasa grew up liking comic books, recalling in 2003, "My mom would take us out to the 7-Eleven on River Road during the summer, and we would get Slurpees and buy comics off the spinning rack. I would read them all over and over again, and draw my own pictures and stuff."
He began writing for Marvel Comics, he explained, when "Marvel hired an editor to find new writers, and they hired her from a theatrical agency. So she started calling theaters and asking if they knew any playwrights who might be good for comic books. A couple of different theaters said she should look at me. So she called me, I sent her a couple of my plays and she said 'Great, would you like to pitch on a couple of comic books in the works?'"
His first submissions were "not what [they were] interested in for the character[s]" but eventually he was assigned an 11-page Fantastic Four story, "The True Meaning of...," for the Marvel Holiday Special 2004. He went on to write Fantastic Four stories in Marvel Knights 4, a spinoff of that superhero team's long-running title; and stories for Nightcrawler vol. 3; The Sensational Spider-Man vol. 2; and Dead of Night featuring Man-Thing.
In May 2008 Aguirre-Sacasa returned to the Fantastic Four with a miniseries tie-in to the company-wide "Secret Invasion" storyline concerning a years-long infiltration of Earth by the shape-shifting alien race, the Skrulls, and an Angel Revelations miniseries with artists Barry Kitson and Adam Polina, respectively. He adapted for comics the Stephen King novel The Stand.

In 2013, he created Afterlife with Archie, depicting Archie Andrews in the midst of a zombie apocalypse; the book's success led to Aguirre-Sacasa being named Archie Comics' chief creative officer.

I have taken a journey through Stephen King’s The Stand many times.

The abridged edition

The mini-series

The unabridged edition

And, now, I have completed the graphic novel!

Overall, I thought that this was a great adaptation. The necessary dialogue was included – which had to be difficult with such a voluminous book. While the art was not my favorite graphic novel art, it still did a pretty good job of conveying the story (and the horror) in a visually satisfying way.

If you are a fan of King and the graphic novel medium, I can very easily recommend that you give this a try. I suggest reading the novel first. But, if you are someone who has been interested in trying The Stand but the 1000+ page book has been too daunting so you keep putting it off, this graphic novel series should serve as a decent alternative option.

For those reading this review who might be interested in other King based graphic novels, I am part way through the Gunslinger graphic novel series, and it is very good to. The only caveat is that last time I checked, it didn’t appear that they were going to finish it.

The Man in Black fled . . . . off to raise some hell elsewhere!

This is the sixth and final volume of a very well-done and faithful adaptation of one the most popular novels of the last century. The story is quite well adapted to the graphic novel format, and the (not for the squeamish at times) art advances and enhances the script pretty well. Overall, it's a different approach than was used for the Dark Tower series but is more successful is some ways. I don't think it should be read -instead of- King's prose, and it doesn't add anything major to the story, but I found it to be a very enjoyable entertainment. This one tackles the final confrontation between good and evil, the titular stand, and somehow manages to capture all of the most important details from the very long novel. The story wraps up quite satisfactorily for us Constant Readers.... M-O-O-N, that spells they didn't all live happily ever after, but they did a pretty darn good job of trying, and the story is well presented.

A pretty blow-out end to the comic run.

I mean that literally, not so much figuratively.

While I'm glad the comics have completed the book and the art is pretty decent, I have to admit the story is... well... not as good as I remember. Kinda like the original. It's not my favorite King. Not by a long shot.

This was very well done as a whole. They took a 1,100 page novel and turned it into 6 graphic novels. Pretty brilliant. I did feel like this volume was rushed and events happened quickly and maybe it was the same pace as the rest. It simply felt rushed.

I appreciate the end and this final volume. It really has done justice to King's magnus opus. The artwork was consistent and helped tell the story.

Good and Evil are once again balanced. People living together will cause problems as always and things will start all over.

A fantastic series to read for graphic novel readers and Stephen King fans.

I really enjoyed this final volume. I was worried that too much was left for the last book but it certainly didn't feel that way. I was really interested in how they were going to present the ending. It's certainly a unique situation and having seen the mini-series version coupled what I envisioned while reading King's actual book, Perkins art really nailed it.

I must say I'm impressed with how Marvel handled the comic adaptation. Gives me hope for their Dark Tower books. Once I finally finish that series, I plan on giving those a try.

Loved the graphic novel format of this favorite. It really did justice to the book and that seemed almost an impossible feat. This truly deserved a five-star rating, but because it's an adaptation of the original, I gave it a four. I definitely recommend this to any fan of Stephen King's book.

This final volume, as excellent as all others in the series, hints at a possible future graphic novel adaptation of 'Salem's Lot.

M-O-O-N.... That spells good times.

What a incredible job the creators of these comics did. So true to the novel. A fantastic adaptation. The illustrations and the writing are top notch. And Randall Flagg... dear God, they absolutely nailed him!

This last issue in the graphic novel series is excellent. Everything comes together for the big showdown between good and evil, and there are people in Las Vegas that are not all evil and people in Boulder that are not all good. There's a spectrum of people everywhere.

Trash Can Man makes quite an entrance back into the storyline when everyone had probably written him off. After that spectacle, it is almost a bit of a letdown of wrapping up the story. I felt that way in the book too, but there is still plenty of creepy imagery from Stu's dreams that he has of Frannie giving birth. Those were some of my favorite illustrations in the graphic novel. I also chuckled at the little cameo that showed up in the Hand of God part.

I found this entire graphic novel version of The Stand outstanding. It had to leave out some plot points, but they were very minor. It really got to the meat of the story in its translation. Excellent storytelling and excellent illustrations. I highly recommend it.

It seems like cheating to say that I read six books here. In reality you have one single story, illustrated over six volumes. Each volume consists of approximately 120 pages of comic book form story telling. Each volume would take me approximately two hours to read and fully appreciate. In terms of actual writing content, if you read a traditional 300 page novel, I would say you probably read an equal amount of text to these six volumes.

But that isn't the reason why most readers picked up this epic graphic novelization. If you want to read Stephen King's The Stand, there is the 800+ page 1978 publication version, and also the more popular and more readily available 1200+page 1988 "Complete and Unabridged" version. I wouldn't recommend that any fan of novels skip both of those books. But after you have already read one of both of those, that is where this new re-invention of the story comes in.

Go back to a familiar place... now with the awesome illustrations of renowned Marvel Comics Artists. It was awesome, very very few of the memorable actions within the 1988 version have been omitted here. They manage to make you appreciate the characters even when the dialogue often lacks the depth of the traditional novel.

I read all three versions of the story on a five year annual plan. In summer 2002 I read the original 78 version. Summer 2007 was when I read the 1988 version, and this year I read the comic book version. I'm really glad I read all three. It's a great story with lifelong rewards and these graphic novels are an amazing tribute. Complete with a little comedy in the form of shameless cameos by the legendary novelist and one of his lesser (but rather memorable) combustion powered creations.

If you pay $10 or less for a copy of stephen king's classic novel. Your getting a wonderful story for your money. If you pay approximately $100 for all six volumes of these comic books... well remember two things... one the comic artists had to work very hard to draw this for you, and two the stephen king novel is easily worth $30 in actual quality of content for your money. So figure you paid $30 for the source material and $70 for the drawings even if what you really paid might have been $8.50 for the source novel (both verisions) and about $92 for all six comics on Amazon.

I gave this final entry into this excellent 6 volume series the highest mark possible because the series as a whole easily matched my expectations. Adapting a massive Stephen King novel into comics could not have been easy, especially one that is as highly regarded as 'The Stand' is but this creative team did a wonderful job. All the major characters are here and the early volumes describing both the spread and devastating effect of the super-flu is handled well. Nothing is really left out in this series and the artwork is consistent and detailed. Almost every character here is how I'd imagined them when I read the book all those years ago. There is plenty of gore throughout but this a narrative driven story punctuated by high drama and tension and the writer - Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa - seems to realize that and doesn't fall into the trap of writing melodrama and sugary scenes of ideal sunsets and romance. He understands that the story is about good vs evil driven by a number of characters that will keep the pages turning and the reader taking sides. He is helped by a liberal use of writing lifted from Stephen King himself. This is a plus since Mr. Kings' writing style is, IMO, his strongest point. His use of everyday language and flowing lyricism always makes his books worthwhile as is ability to write the everyday man battling immense evil while remaining an everyday man is unique to Stephen King and it's on full display in this series. These character do not end up were they began but they remain the same people when they get there.

This series would be great for anyone who wants to read the novel but is intimidated by the 1000+ pages of the novel. It would also be great for people who want to re-read the book but are putting off for the same reason. There may be some gaps in this adaptation but as a whole is a reverent and intelligent adaptation and should be the benchmark for all adaptations of novels into the graphic form. In short, I believe this series is exactly the way Mr. King would want his book to be adapted. He even has a cameo in volume 6.

The adaptation takes an interesting turn on the final battle of good and evil. There is a literal interpretation of good and evil and Perkins relies on classical red devil with horns vs. white and pure. The hand of god that King writes which I believe is intended to be abstract and subtle is made blatant with religious connotation.

A fitting end to a great story. Several characters come to a full circle and so does Randal Flagg. For him, it ends exactly where it started for him and he knows how its going to end for the people who found him.

An excellent adaptation by Sacasa, brilliant art by Perkins and several covers (like the one with Nadine, Nick and Tom..) were exceptional.

...and this concludes my reading of Stephen King's The Stand in comic form. What an unbelievable treat! The adaption of such an epic work into comic form would be difficult to say the least, but Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa pulled it off brilliantly. If you love the original novel, then this is a must-read. Or if you are just one of those people that rather reads good comics than plough through a 1000 page novel, then this is for you too! Enjoy - I certainly did.
