Bound by the Veil #2

Cursed by the Veil

Rate this book
I died. At least that’s what it felt like. Betrayed by the man I was beginning to love, I was chained, used, and shoved into the Veil, tossed away like moldy bread. When the Veil spits me back out, no one is more shocked than me that I survived, but I’m not the same person anymore. Not even close. I’m also no longer in the Kingdom of Eaorin. Somehow I’ve ended up in the mystical fae realm of Illeoria, and I quickly discover that everything I thought I knew about the fae was horribly wrong. As I try to figure out how I got here and what I'm supposed to do now, my enemy is by my side every step of the way. Tormenting me. Tempting me. If he doesn't kill me, the fae realm just might. When we get to the fae court, not only am I in way over my head, but I’ve already broken one of the cardinal rules of the fae, one which is punishable by death. If I’m going to survive, I have to trust the one person I never wanted to rely on again—Thorn. Will he help me survive? Or will he just use me for his own gain?

Cursed by the Veil is the second book in the Bound by the Veil series. It's filled with steamy enemies-to-lovers romance, mystery, a heroine who will fight for everything she has, and a hero who might just be a villain. Perfect for romantic fantasy fans who love Sylvia Mercedes, LJ Andrews, and Elise Kova. One-click this epic adventure of magic, love, and betrayal today!

Eek - very disappointing. This felt like half a book, had a ton of typos, and nothing really made sense. Some spoilers below, so you've been warned. I'm also about to say the word "weird" a whole bunch - you've been warned x2.

My largest issue with this book is that it was just so rushed. There were scenes and major plot points that just flew by. For example, Senara is tortured and kept in a cage for awhile, but it's all summed up in like 3 pages. There was essentially no further world-building explanations besides the sun-kissed (sun-blessed? icr) and the moon-touched cannot be involved romantically (no idea why not), but these fae all intermingle together, so I was confused. Thorn is a general in the fae lands too, I guess, but that wasn't really explained. I don't understand what his role is in the fae lands or what he was doing in the human lands/why he was there. There's also a random fae prince suddenly traveling with Thorn and Ronan in the fae lands, but he is barely explained or introduced and had no purpose as far that I could tell. No idea where he came from.

There wasn't really chemistry between Senara and Thorn. Honestly, they barely interacted besides one random sex scene. They didn't talk much at all. It made no sense to me that Thorn was

Senara arrives in the fae lands and is immediately treated like royalty, which was confusing because no one had seen her mark yet. She just arrived, her mark was mostly hidden, and the army was right away like, "here's your personal bodyguard." They all literally bowed to her (why??), and then she was initiated into the royal court. It was so weird and rushed. It made no sense.

Additionally, Wyn's character was fucking bizarre in this book. I thought it was weird that when Senara wanted to run away from Thorn/Ronan during her 1st night in fae, Wyn told Senara that she was going to stay and was like, "I'm sure we'll meet again someday." Ummmm what? You're with your best friend/only family in a new foreign land, and you're perfectly content to separate? I was so confused. Why was she so willing to abandon Senara? I think that whole scene's only purpose was to set up for Senara to be alone while trying to escape so that Thorn could rescue her from the ghoul and then they could have sex all night. However, there had to be a better way to set up that scene. Wyn telling Senara to run away by herself was really strange and a complete departure from who her character is supposed to be.

Speaking of Wyn, why is everyone in love with her? She has so many love interests, it feels like the author can't decide who she wants Wyn to be with. I thought it was going to be Ronan (which felt a bit forced imo), but then it was that random mage who we know nothing about and they fell in love in about 1 week. It was weird.

The ghouls were also a very strange concept. They didn't really make a lot of sense. I wish we got a bit more explanation on the feral fae too. That scene was rushed.

I really had high hopes for this book, but unfortunately, I was not impressed. It felt like the author prematurely set a release date of December 2023 thinking she would be done with the book, and then pushed it back 1 month (which, to my understanding, is the maximum amount of time that Amazon will let an author push back a release date without being penalized), but the book still wasn't ready in January and it was published anyways. This was a short 185 page book, and it felt like it had rushed scenes/plot points, no explanations, and no real character interaction or chemistry.

Could not finish. It was rushed, so many grammatical errors, like your instead of “you’re”, sentence structure issues you couldn’t ignore because it pulled you out of the story. Second POV was a literal rehash of the first, word for word with no insight gained from that perspective.

I really enjoyed the first book, but this one left a lot to be desired. Very little happened. There was no character or relationship growth. I like the world and the general concepts, but nothing really happened here.

That was disappointing. I really liked the first book and couldn’t wait for the second book to come out and I’m disappointed. I was looking forward to the character development and changes in personality and abilities since now they were in there fae forms. I assumed there would be a great deal of chapters about her getting use to her fae form but, no. I also thought there would be a strain on the relationship since he took advantage of her offer. Not only did he know she was fae and he was going to save her but, he took advantage of her and then didn’t care about his friend watching. Also the fact that he pushed her sister through the veil not caring that she could die. I also feel it was out of character when she brought it up and he said you were offering so why not and she just let it go and had sex with him. Again no character development and it all felt rushed. I was hoping for more and this was a let down. Such good bones to build upon just off of her reaction to him lying and using her alone would have made the story 100times better. Just disappointing and I have no doubt the third installment will be much the same.

"Cursed by the Veil" is book two in the "Bound by the Veil" series, and this part of the story brings us right into the middle of the fae... I liked discovering this world through the eyes of Senara, feeling how the unknowns of this world make her unsure of her abilities and the path she should take. On the one hand it creates a bit of a different feel to the story, while still holding onto the things I loved so much in book one.

And then there's Thorn... I'm a little torn (pun intended) between trying to understand his behavior, and wanting to throw a shoe at him to show him he should change his ways and fast. It's clear there is more to his story, and I'm definitely giving him the benefit of doubt, but a little groveling won't hurt him in the future.

The author of this series manages the art perfectly of giving us an answer to a question, while immediately throwing two new questions our way. It made it very easy to relate to Senara, because somehow the author gave me the same feelings of uncertainty and wonder she's feeling throughout this book. I might have wanted this book to be a little longer, but there was also no better way to end this second one than the way she did. So yes, it ends in a cliffhanger. No, that's not a reason to wait to pick up this series.

Did the story get interesting? Yes.
Did the writing improve? Nope, took a nosedive instead.

Ok, I enjoy dual points of view, but you don't need to rehash the same scene EVERY time you switch perspectives. I already know what happened, move on.

Editing? Clearly, this series was just pushed out to make a quick buck. So many grammatical errors, plus the imagery feels completely skipped over at times.

I REALLY want to enjoy Senera and Thorne's story. She's blessed by the Moon Godess, and he's blessed by the Sun God. Their relationship is forbidden between the different courts, yet they are destined to save the Fae from the corruption spreading through the land. The plot I can definitely get down with, the writing is just really now showcasing it well.

Tbh I preferred the first book. This one didn’t feel as cohesive or make as much sense. I truly couldn’t get behind Thorn and his wishy washy reasonings, not much was explained in depth, and there were several times I had to reread sentences to even understand what was going on.

However, the beginning of the book thoroughly caught my attention. The introduction was brilliant and descriptive and made me want more. I hope the next book is like that- all the way thru. I loved Senara and her resilience and I hope she finally gets some peace and comfort, physically and in her soul. That girl has been thru so much lol. The humor that was in this book was kinda witty and funny and made it easier to get thru as well.

Overall, I hope book 3 gives me the same energy that book 1 did. I wanna know what happens with her new magic and that cliffy.

There were so many issues with this book, beyond having more typos than I’ve seen in a long time. The characters themselves were so different, it’s as though the first book in the series had one destination and the sequel wanted to be an entirely different plotline - and the characters changed to accommodate. There’s promise here in these books, but as is this book felt rushed, sloppy, and like a completely different book from the first with way too many battling elements. Like, fae zombies, ghouls, moon blades, etc etc. this book feels like a first draft, even though I’m sure a lot of work went into it - it shouldn’t have been released in this form.

Cursed by the Veil - book 2 picks up right where the first one ended by Senara (FMC) has landed in a whole new world beyond the Veil. One where Senara and her friend - Wyn are completely out of their depth. I understood why there was a barrier between Senara and Thorn being together but I'll be honest that Thorn did do my head in slightly with his indecisiveness. Him and Sen did steam up my kindle when they were together though. For me this book was a bit slower than the first one but I still enjoyed reading it and with cliff-hanger ending I can't wait to see what will happen next. Bring on book 3 now.

Cursed by the Veil is the second book in the Bound to the Veil Series. This cannot be read as a standalone and continues from the first book.

As of late, stories with faes have really piqued my interest. I am sooooo loving this world building. Senara is such a wonderful character to follow. Once you get answers questions, more pop up and makes you want to read more. Helen Scott has always been one of my favorites and this still proves that she's still got it! Can't wait for the next book!

I would put money on the fact this author has ADHD. The FMC thoughts go off on page long tangents that don’t even impact the story. And if you can look past that, then you have to deal with the endless typos in this book.

The plot itself is very interesting and that’s why I read the second book but I can’t convince myself to finish the series bc the FMC genuinely pissed me off with her rambling thoughts, over explaining, and repetition of thoughts.

First book was great!! Ugh this could have been a good book. It just lacked so much detail and was very rushed. Definitely ended when it could have just continued to make a complete book. Hope the 3rd book is better when it’s finished but not sure I’ll even read it.

I was really looking forward to this but heavily disappointed. The whole book feels like a draft and seems like hasn’t been proof read.
Story could have been nice but the book is just too short to establish any kind of plot. Very sad!

Erm, what? Where is the rest of this book? WHY is it so short?!

Besides the above, I was really getting into this despite a few narrative issues. It feels like a lot has been cut out/skipped over (I.e. her testing), and I feel like it'd be nice to have a Wyn POV every so often. I have many questions...where one gets answered, ten more crop up! So I'm hoping this is more just a 'peek' at the potential of the next book.

I'm finding the series enjoyable even though I know it has issues, but I'm really annoyed at how short the damn book is. Now I've got to wait until book three to find out what happens with that abrupt ending (inevitable and predictable with MMC). Argh!

This book was a complete disappointment. Where was the plot? I literally cannot tell you one thing that happened nor can I tell you why I care about these characters anymore.
I can tell you what didn’t happen- our MCs didn’t address or handle the weird assault that happened last book, yet we’re still supposed to root for them as a couple? Ick.

Honestly, after waiting what felt like a long time for this book to be released, I was more than ready to devour it. I fell in love with the characters in the previous book and was more than ready to get the continuation of their story in this one. I have to say that there were things that I liked and disliked. I enjoyed the main characters in this story, but I wish that there was more chemistry between Senara and Thorn. For me, the chemistry between them wasn't as intense as it was in the previous book, and I was missing that. It seemed that the only connection we got was a quick sex scene between the two of them. I was just hoping and waiting for more interaction and connection between the two before they met up with the soldiers who would protect the moon marked but I was disappointed. I am liking some of the new characters introduced in this story but right now it's hard to tell who friend or foe even though I have my suspicion. I think it added a bit of mystery and suspense to the story. With that being said, this story had so many editing mistakes. Editing mistakes that would have been noticed by simply rereading the story before publishing. Another thing that bothered me in the beginning of the story was the author writing the exact same scene from Senara and Thorn point of views. I usually enjoy different pov's but in this case, it just felt as if the author did it to fill up extra pages, and it was completely useless to me when it came to this story. I think the author could have finessed the story a bit more. It almost seems as if the author who captured me with her writing in the first book disappeared for this book. In my opinion it almost seems as if this story was rushed to get published, and I'm simply basing that on the writing in the story for me in the previous book compared to this one. Some scenes felt too rushed and was passed on too quickly. For example, like the fighting scene with the feral. I had to turn back just to make sure I didn't miss a chapter. I just thought there would be more, especially with the protection shield falling and everyone protecting Senara, the scene fell a bit flat. I feel that there's so much still that needs to happen and after reading this book, especially with another cliffhanger ending. However, as much as I want to know what happens with the characters, I might finish the series when all the books are released. I love reading a good series, but after buying and reading books for so many years, it gets old quickly when it seems as if the series will be dragged out.

She's not in Kansas anymore. In Marked by the Moon takes place in the human realm well the second book in the Bound by the Veil series, Cursed by the Veil, finds the main characters in the realm of the fae.

I love a good fae fantasy. There are deadly creatures that lurk in the forest, there are beautiful fae cities, and Helen has put a unique spin on the fae culture. There are the Moon-marked fae as well as Sun-kissed and I want to know more. The differences in attributes, powers, affinities, and whatever else there is. The politics of course are complicated, the fae are very dangerous and a destiny has been revealed. Of course, I have a hundred-and-one questions.

Senara is a warrior and she's using everything she's got to make sure she survives. I love the fact that while she is curious she doesn't let awe blind her. Senara uses her observation skills, intelligence, and best of all she trusts her instincts. She's thinking ahead and is more open to things than I would have thought. However, she's under no delusions about her situation.

Thorne still has his chapters and through them, I get to know Thorne better than before. Through his thoughts, I learn how much he truly cares about Senara. Sure he always thought highly of her and I loved that but it has evolved into more. Which I couldn't be happier about but his outward actions make me want to scream. At times he irked me but overall I like him better now. He and Senara have that star-crossed thing going on and I'm really hoping it works out.

I love that we're in the fae world, there's so much to see and know. From all the magical creatures to the nobility, and the magic. The fae world is beautiful but I can see darkness underneath. The fae, the snobs that they are, have already made me angry. There's a lot of "I above you" attitude that grates on me but there's also some shady stuff that's giving me all kinds of bad vibes. Things to do with destinies and power, and the such.

Things were just starting to get interesting and then Cursed by the Veil had to go and end with the mother-of-all cliffhangers. What does this mean? What's going to happen next? These are just a couple of the questions I can't wait to have answered.

My only gripes with this book is that it's kinda slow - some interesting things happen, but if the series continues with not enough to keep me hooked then I won't be recommending this one in the future. I'm hoping this book is just a needed set up book to really get into things and that the story will TAKE OFF in the next book!

We are left with a cliff-hanger and it's definitely one that makes me eager for the next book.

**Synopsis Spoilers Below - nothing too major**

Cursed by the Veil continues right where we left off in book one - Sem and her sister being thrown into the veil. While in the veil, Sem experiences something odd- and it will determine her destiny. However, she will not remember it when she comes out of the veil.

After some time, Thorn and Ronan find the girls and after some bickering they all begin a journey to the Capital City, Caslean. On their way they make a few pit stops and send word to the Capital and end up getting an escort. When this escort of Fae and Elf soldiers appear, Sem gets a new idea of how she will be treated due to her moon mark compared to the human lands.

Once at the Capital, Wyn is ushered off to learn how to be a mage and she is very excited and you can feel how giddy the character is through the writing. Sem, on the other hand is whisked off to try to reveal or figure out why her magic is not present. We learn a lot during this part in the book (not necessarily about Sem) and I'm curious how it will be brought back later as I'm sure it will be.

After trying and failing to bring out her magic, Sem is formally presented at an event for all of the Fae in the Capital and is accepted as one of them. She is essentially put on as a public show to wield the moon blades and fails in front of everyone. Because of this, Thorn rushes to her aid and offers to train her, stating that she's weak and doesn't know her Fae form or how best to use it. But before Thorn can live up to training Sem, he runs off with Ronan back to the Capital because he can't get her out of his head and he thinks this is best.

This is the second book of the series and it must be read in order if you don't want to feel a bit lost. That being said if you read in order it start just where the first book finished ( high cliffhanger) and you are immediately swept into the story with even more questions than before as this time you discover the fae world and meet elves also.

Senara is moon marked and she is a fae without knowledge of teh fae world and its rules so when she is sent there by the veil with a mission by a strange entity she is feeling lost and betrayed as Thorn acted without any word or explanation. now she is in a unknown world, not knowing who to trust and who to believe as she is not welcome as well as she was led to believe.

Thorn is relieved to see that Senara survived and find her even more exquise and hard to resist but as a sunmarked fae he is forbidden to have any relation with a moon marked, that's the law....but attracted to her even before knowing she was a fae he can't resist one last night together without any pressure....He knows she feel betrayed and he knows it's his fault but heart and mind are not on the same page.

It was really interesting to see the fae world even if we have more questions, and it was funny to see Wyn able to enjoy magic as a natural thing. We get to learn a bit more about thorn and ronan as they explain why, and how, they were in the human world. some new characthers are also really interesting.

More actions, secrets and steamy moments this is a good fantasy but i do regret the cliffhanger as the time between books area bit long with such suspense

Cursed By The Veil (Bound By The Veil Book 2) by Helen Scott is a riveting paranormal romance.  This story picks up right where the last one left off.  The group survives entering the veil.  However, now they must survive the land of the Fae.  Sen finds her world completely flipped.  She has always been self-sufficient and capable of taking care of herself and Wren.  However the fae are much larger and stronger than her and she doesn't even understand the land.  Thorn is faced with the fact that he can't have Sen since Sun and moon Marked are ever to mix.  After getting Sen and Wren to the capital his job is done.  Sen must learn to get over him. Will she be able to survive the loss of Thorn and living in Faery?

This book is filled with so many twists and turns with surprises around every corner.  Sen continues to surprise everyone, coming out of the veil nearly 2 weeks later with the largest moon mark ever seen and Wren a human surviving at all.  What does all this mean?  There is still plenty of heat between Sena and Thorn.  I was excited to find Wren may have some romantic interests as well.  They both finally no longer need to hide who they are.  However not everything is as it seems as there is a sickness in the land. Sen questions if her moon mark is a blessing or a curse no matter where she goes.

I loved the characters and was excited to find new friends and foes.  The world-building continues to be amazing and only growing now that they reach the fae lands. I love the beautiful descriptions of the various fae and the scary creatures throughout the lands.  I binge read this story in one day and cannot wait to find out what happens next.  This is a 5 out of 5 star story.  If you enjoy paranormal romance with lots of fae and Magic and a taboo relationship, you'll love Cursed By The Veil.

We pic up with Senara making it through the veil and learning that Thorn and Ronan are fae and that they saved her by pushing her through the veil. She learns that she is moon marked and will be part of the Moonlit court. Thorn and Ronan are sun kissed and part of the Sunkissed court. The get along but do not intermingle which makes their relationship forbidden. Of course they struggle to resist each other so that is going to bring about more issues for them. By the end of the book we see how they are tangled together and we are left with a huge cliffhanger that is leaving me with so many questions and thoughts on what’s going on. I’m hoping the two can battle through this forbidden romana e and be together. Yes Thorn is grumpy, short tempered and snarky but Senara absolutely has already fallen for him and I just love them together. They have just such great chemistry and I’m hoping to see him fight harder for her in the next book instead of accepting that they cannot be together. I’m also looking forward to getting more on the mystery of what Senara might be or what her large mark might mean about her. We see hints of a possible destiny but we still have so much more to learn. Absolutely recommend to anyone who likes a good forbidden romance and mystery with fae and elves thrown in.

Cursed By The Veil ; Bound By The Veil Book 2 ) Tropes 🖤Fantasy Romance 🖤Fae Romance 🖤StarCrossed Love 🖤forbidden romance So let me just start by saying that I am not typically a person who reads or enjoys fantasy romances by any means . That being said Helen Scott Happens to be one of my absolute favorite authors so anything written by her truly is the exception. I absolutely adored both Senara and Thorn so so much. I cannot really put into words what is was , but from the very first page I felt a pull to them like a moth to a flame and I literally could not stop myself from falling completely in love . That angst , the push and pull , the intrigue, the suspense, the twists and turns, the oh so steamy moments, the love , the passion, the tragedy, the heartbreak, the family and friendships, the phenomenal world building and characters that are so unique , so complex and just 100% captivating. Cursed By The Veil was like being on the wildest ride at the amusement park . A emotional rollercoaster that has the ability to leave you utterly speechless, to make you scream outta pure frustration, to break your heart, make you smile and keep you rooting so freaking hard . It’s a must read , a 10/10 and chefs kiss 💋

I fell in love with these characters in book 1. This entire story, the world, the people, the mystery, all of it captured my attention and I just loved it.

Book 2... leaves a little to be desired. I have more questions than answers. The story felt rushed, it was significantly shorter, and I felt that a lot was missing. Why did Thorne act the way he did? I understand the reason, but not much else. He seemed like a completely different character in this book and not in a good way, more like a backwards slide of development.

Things just didn't fit for me. I'm not sure if the author just isn't into the story anymore or something happened and it was a rush job instead of delaying it more, I'm just not sure. Maybe it is just her writing style?

I will read the next book that comes out in hopes that I get more from the story. I truly hope things don't get worse in the next installment. I have been looking forward to this book for months and I am left disappointed. The cliffhanger is rough, but I actually love a good cliff like this. No stars were deducted for the cliff. I have left three stars for the lack of plot/character development and simple errors that could/should have been caught in editing or by beta readers.

Cursed by the Veil by Helen Scott is book two in the Bound by the Veil Series. After reading the first book I was looking forward to reading this one. It picks up directly after where the first book ended so with that said you must read these books in order. I’m a huge fan of everything Fae and fantasy so this series is great for that. I finished this book rather quickly as I was just so intrigued. I liked that I got some answers I wanted from the first book but ended up with even more questions now. (Not saying that’s a bad thing!) Really great setup for the next book in the series. I also enjoyed that the worldbuilding is still building and expanding. I loved how I felt Senara’s insecurities peeking through and the uncertainty that she felt. Thorn at times had me shaking my head trying to understand him while simultaneously wanting to reach through my kindle and shake him! Overall it’s a good read, my only complaint is it felt a bit short. (At least to me) I will mention that this book ends on a cliffhanger. So needless to say I’m looking forward to reading book three.
