A detective on the brink. An assassin out for revenge. A desperate mother racing against the clock.

The Taylor Jackson series has been my favourite for years. And so, I was thrilled to be given a chance to read an early copy of this recent instalment. I enjoyed reconnecting with the characters, similarly to the way I would enjoy catching up with old friends. I was also surprised by some of the exciting and unexpected developments that took place. Although, I cannot say too much, of course. What I will say is that it was a brilliant read, one that was difficult to put down once you've started reading. I'm already wondering about the possibility of yet another Taylor book. I genuinely hope there will be another one coming.
Taylor Jackson is my favorite female detective written by my favorite female Thriller/Suspense Author J.T. Ellison I was delighted to receive an advanced digital copy of this book I've read and listened to this series multiple times and this latest doesn't disappoint Taylor and her team are back and at the top of their game you should definitely read this book
Great “Taylor Jackson” story. It’s part of a series, but can be read as a standalone. Taylor is a strong, independent woman portrayed as a Nashville Police Force Captain. I highly recommend this book and previous books in the “Taylor Jackson” series.
I haven’t read the earlier Taylor Jackson novels, but now I feel I need to go back to them! I’m starting to feel like Ellison can do no wrong. If you love a good, page turning mystery, this book is for you!
Such a great book!! Taylor Jackson has been through a lot in this series, but she is still the same tough, smart, determined investigator she’s always been. Wolves pushed Taylor out of her comfort zone and in the best way possible. Such a well written and interesting book. J.T. Ellison never disappoints!!
This novel opens with a legend called the “THE TALE OF TWO WOLVES” and it deserves to be shared as it is quite foretelling of things to come in the story:
One evening, an elderly Cherokee brave told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. “My dear one, the battle between two ‘wolves’ is inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.” The grandson thought about it for a moment and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee replied: “The One you feed.”
THE WOLVES CAME AT NIGHT features a character that author J.T. Ellison claims is her mother’s favorite of hers, Lt. Taylor Jackson. The big change in this novel is the fact that Taylor has been promoted and is now Captain Jackson. That is not the only change she will face in this novel, for the story is a tale of changes and revelations. She is being strongly pursued by the private security company Macallan, who even agrees to take on her FBI fiancée, Baldwin, to sweeten the deal. More important to the plot is the revelation that an enemy from her past, one who is seeking revenge against Taylor for putting a slug in her shoulder, is back in the middle of the action and that keeps the suspense bubbling the entire read.
The initial case Taylor and her Detectives with the Nashville P.D. must deal with involves the high-profile murder of a famous young Country Music singer named Georgia Wray. She was shot to death and a pair of local College students may have witnessed the killer. Carson Conway, who was running in the woods with her roommate Izzy, may have overheard the argument the killer had with ‘Georgia’ before shooting her to death. When Carson eventually calls the police and leads them to the spot in the forest, the dead body of a young female is found there.
No one knew the deceased was Georgia Wray until her ID is found on her body. Her manager, Travis, tells Taylor and her Detective that Georgia’s ex-boyfriend, Justin Osborne, had a hard time with their break-up and openly threatened her. Running with this lead, the Nashville P.D. go to Justin’s place to find him deceased, the apparent victim of suicide, a piece of paper reading: “I’m sorry” found nearby. Taylor’s first case as Captain seems to have wrapped up quite neatly, a little too neatly for her liking. She does not believe Justin’s case was suicide and wants to push a little further.
Directly on the heels of Taylor’s suspicion we are taken to the New Haven, Connecticut residence of Dr. Avery Conway, Carson’s mother, where she receives a note stating: ‘We have your daughter. Two million. No cops.’ Avery cannot deal with this, especially after her husband Richard was murdered recently. Her first call is to the man she and Richard sold their bakery business to; a man named Santiago who may be a baker now but had a more nefarious background prior to the food industry. Santiago takes charge and he phones an assassin named Angelie Delacroix who was in France. When she hears that Taylor Jackson is involved in the case she becomes highly interested as she was the same adversary who Taylor plugged in the shoulder in a previous novel.
Angelie and Santiago approach Avery Conway with some startling information, the same people who kidnapped her daughter are the ones that also killed her husband Richard. For Taylor, her initial problem is to find out how the murders of Georgia Wray and Justin Osborne are connected with Carson Conway and eventually tying that to the murder of her father. Once Angelie hits ground in Nashville things really get interesting and the twists and turns to come in this story will have readers riveted all the way to the showdown conclusion.
J.T. Ellison, who lives in Nashville, knows the territory well and puts that knowledge to good use in THE WOLVES COME AT NIGHT. The connections to the past history of the area, that may have some Native American lore mixed in, really spices things up. She is a top-notch thriller writer and this may be one of the best novels in the Taylor Jackson series yet.
Those of us that have waited patiently for the next Taylor novel, are at last satisfied. Brilliant book, with exciting opportunities for the continuation of the series. Thank you, JT!
I’d like to thank edelweiss and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. Taylor Jackson is back and in fine form. We follow Taylor as her and her team are trying to track down a missing college student who had just witnessed a recent murder. Are the two crimes intertwined and if so, how? This story starts off with a bang and doesn’t stop till the very end. We need more Taylor Jackson.
Fast paced and brilliantly written with familiar and lovable characters, this book is a must read for Taylor fans. Once again, she encounters her nemesis Angelie and Taylor has life-altering decisions to make. I loved the plot that was twisted and complex and had multiple complex layers. J.T. Ellison does a masterful job of weaving it all together into one of the best suspense thrillers ever! I own a copy of this book and all opinions expressed are my own.
This book was just perfect for ending a dry spell on Taylor Jackson books! It was so wonderful to have Taylor and the other beloved characters back. The storyline in this one captured my interest right away and kept me wondering what would happen next. It was nice to see Taylor and her team of detectives working together once again to solve murders. I liked where this book left Taylor, but sure hope the author has more stories to tell about her!
a fun continuation of the Taylor Jackson series, the end seemed a bit rushed and kinda anticlimactic considering they flew across the world to find this villain and just accidentally stumbled upon him?
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
2.5. Not my genre. Read it for our mom’s book club. Also read it as a standalone when there’s 8 books in the series before so that didn’t help to be invested in the characters and their back stories.
Thriller Chick and master storyteller (avid fan) J. T. Ellison returns following It's One Of Us (5 stars) with her popular Lt. Taylor Jackson Series; THE WOLVES COME AT NIGHT —A gripping twisty suspense crime thriller with a detective on the brink, an assassin out for revenge, and a desperate, mother racing against the clock.
The novel starts with a bang, (literally) immediately drawing you in. Radnor Lake, Nashville, Tennessee.
Carson and Isabel (Izz), freshman roommates from Vanderbilt and the Lat and Long Club are hiking and Carson hears a noise and goes to check it out. A man and a woman are arguing, and then a gunshot.
Fearful of their lives, they run. They hope they can make it down the mountain before he sees them. Had he seen her?
They returned to the dorm and told Simeon (developer of the GPS app) they were using. The campus police called, which contacted Nashville Metro. Carson and Simeon take the cops to the spot. Yes, the woman is dead.
Metropolitan Justice Center, Nashville Taylor Jackson has a new office. She is Captain with better hours, better pay, and better benefits. She is back from her medical leave in Scotland and cleared by the department shrink for active duty.
Not sure she will stay at Metro with all the politics, paperwork, and her annoying boss.
Taylor is heading up the high-profile murder case. Georgia Wray is a country music star. Nashville born and bred, a gorgeous blonde, wrote her songs, a star in the making —the next Taylor Swift.
Since Carson was the witness with Izz, they are keeping an eye on her dorm room in the event the shooter identifies her and decides to look her up.
Justin Osborne was her ex-boyfriend. They just had a breakup. They came to Nashville together. He played the guitar and sang. A scout wanted only Georgia.
Georgia's parents are currently traveling in New Zealand at some secluded resort. They do not think it was the boyfriend, but the recording label guy, possibly.
Then everything changes. The boyfriend is dead. A suicide?
Then the case moves to something more critical. That of Carson. She is missing. Do the two cases connect, or is there something different?
Could the app place the two women in the same place simultaneously? Who was the angel investor? Did someone hack the app? Carson found a virus on her phone. Both the women looked alike. Could Carson have been the intended target versus Georgia?
Her mother, Avery, a doctor in New Haven, CT, with twin sons, rushes to Nashville. However, her deceased husband owned a bakery with two guys. These two guys now run the bakery, and something more sinister may be happening. Had her marriage been a complete lie?
Someone has her daughter. Could it be related to her husband's business or the Nashville shooting?
Ellison takes readers on an intense non-stop adventure, a globetrotting around Europe and beyond. Taylor connects with spies and assassins to find Carson before it is too late. Will Taylor leave her homicide detective behind to find the killer of the murder victim? She is not a paper pusher behind a desk. She wants to be out in the field without micro-management.
High adrenaline and action-packed. JT is on FIRE with her tenacious Taylor Jackson. An internal battle between wolves (people)—good and evil. Which one will win out?
A great ending that fans will LOVE!
I loved catching up with Baldwin (her soon-to-be husband, FBI hunky profiler) and cameo appearances from Sam and Xander. (spin-off series)
THE WOLVES COME AT NIGHT may be read as a standalone; however, now I am dying to go back and read the ones I missed in the Taylor Jackson series. LOVE her. I enjoyed the tug and pull of both good and evil and her career choice selections. As you will find in the end, I think she made a wise decision. (career and personal)
I also enjoyed all the fabulous quotes. JT Ellison is a powerhouse, and every novel is a wild ride! If you like strong women and well-written, fast-paced crime thrillers, this one is for you!

J.T. Ellison’s latest book marks the return of Lt. Taylor Jackson, who has been promoted to captain. She is being strongly pursued by Macallan, a private security company that even agrees to take on her fiancée, FBI profiler John Baldwin, to sweeten the deal. The Wolves Come at Night Taylor Jackson #4 JT Ellison
The Wolves Come at Night is a globetrotting, twisty turny thriller that’s fast paced from beginning to end, illuminating the masterful storytelling of JT Ellison and makes the years melt away as she once again brings Taylor Jackson back to life for rabid fans like me. Taylor has always been a steadfast by-the-book cop character, but this new incarnation of Taylor includes shades of grey giving her an edgier feel. JT also has a stable of fantastic costars including Taylor’s FBI fiancé, her murder team and others both good and evil and one or two that will fall in both the good and evil category, plus a cameo from Taylor’s BFF Sam Owens (who stars in her own series). The investigation is filled with intrigue, danger and death leading Taylor from Nashville to several beautiful European sites leaving bodies strewn in her wake and leaving readers with more questions than answers until JT lets us in on that all-important ah-ha moment. The novel is removed enough from the previous Taylor Jackson novels to stand on its own but those who want the whole picture will want to start from the beginning. Readers who love the chilling novels of Hank Phillipi Ryan, Lisa Gardner or Megan Golden or this fantastic author will find this novel impossible to put down and wondering if Taylor will be back again.
Taylor Jackson should be happy, she’s survived yet again a brush with death at the hands of a madman, is madly in love with her handsome FBI profiler and has just been promoted to Captain in the Metro Nashville police department. She’s also at the end of her rope, about to pull her hair out of her head dealing with all the politics, paperwork and conflicts with her new boss that come with this new jig that she didn’t ask for, when she’s saved in the nick of time being called to assist her old team with the investigation of the murder of an up-and-coming female country star. Finally, something she can sink her teeth into. It seems two Vanderbilt University students stumbled upon a murder in progress while on an app scavenger hunt and reported it to the police but then the case takes on a strange turn when one of the co-eds goes missing leaving the murder team scratching their heads and Taylor butting heads yet again with her boss. What Taylor doesn’t know is that there is something very sinister at work here and will put her face to face with an enemy from her past.
Well worth the wait. I have to admit, I struggled with the beginning of this book. If you’ve read the earlier books in this series, this book looks and reads completely different. There were so many changes it didn’t even seem like the same series. They have a new building, there were promotions (some welcome, some not) which broke up the team, a new medical examiner, Baldwin off doing Baldwin stuff, Taylor struggling with everything. The beginning of the book was slow. A lot of investigation, a lot of talking, things seem to wrap up rather quickly. But Taylor’s gut tells her there is more to the apparent murder of an up and coming country star and the suicide of her ex. Then when the only witness seems to completely disappear, she knows things go deeper than what everyone is seeing. This leads Taylor into a world she only had a brief look into in an earlier book. A world that does not work in a black and white world. But lives somewhere in the shadows of a very grey world, of secrets, spies and assassins. Decisions are made, alliances are brokered and the second half of the book takes off. It was fast, furious and tense. Filled with risky moves, questionable actions and life and death decisions. Not everything you see is real. Sometimes things have to be manipulated for the greater good. I ended up throughly enjoying this story. Lots of changes, I’m hoping there will be another book so we can see how these changes play out. A well written story. Great characters. Lots of twists and turns. I would recommend reading the short story Whiteout before starting this book. It introduces some of the new characters and gives you some of their backstory.
3.5 stars This is the ninth book in the Taylor Jackson series. The story starts out with the murder of Georgia Wray an up & coming country singer and two college students who witnessed the event.
Taylor, although promoted to a captain, prefers hunting for killers/criminals versus paperwork at a desk.
The story quickly jumps to Dr Avery Conway with the kidnapping of her daughter Carson-one of the witnesses-for $2 million and has Taylor pondering her future outside the Nashville Police Department giving consideration to joining a private spy group.
The first quarter of this book was very slow. The content of Wray’s murder was lacking; could have been drawn out and more melodramatic.
Although there are twists & turns and an appropriate ending, I would prefer the Taylor Jackson series has her remain with the Nashville PD and her partners Samantha Owens, Linc Ross, & Marcus Wade.
I’ve always enjoyed this series in the past however, I wasn’t happy with the whole spy group thing which felt a little far-fetched and the reason I gave 3.5 stars
As I typically enjoy the author’s books, I look forward to reading JT Ellison’s next book.
Thank you JT Ellison for making Taylor Jackson come to life once again through audio book! I’ve listened to the entire series and just loved these characters, their trials, their life, their triumphs etc.. I will say I was disappointed that the same narrator who brought Taylor to life in books 1-8 was not the same narrator for book 9, but I’m still grateful that I was able to finish the series.
I wish there would have been more of a tie up on all the characters. Especially Taylor and Baldwin. I know Samantha’s character has a separate series and I’m looking forward to start that as well.
LT.Taylor Jackson now Cpt.Jackson is back at it in this last book with a homicide of an up and coming country star, a kidnapping, and an app that went all wrong! A grieving wife who finds that her husband was living a lie and now her daughter has been kidnapped. Taylor won’t stop until the girl is found, but it will come at a price for Taylor..again.
If you’re looking for characters you can really dig into and get to know this series is def for you!!
Taylor survived her last big case and has been promoted to captain, which is more desk and meetings than she likes. She craves being active and running her crew and investigative work again. Her team is now being run by Linc taking the lt spot, and with a little boy named Flynn....Marcus works for Linc, and Renn is on paternity leave with a little girl and little boy.
On a mountain, a couple of Vanderbuilt students using an app developed by another student are in a remote wooded area when they hear an argument and gun shot. A lover's quarrel? The pair of girl students run back down the mountain but a guy that was above them spots one of the girls and could potentially come after her to silence a witness.
But he later turns up dead.
Suicide? Homicide?
The mysterious Macallan group is trying to talk Taylor in leaving the police force and joining them, but their actions are counter to Taylor's beliefs. Does she really want to give up the police work to join them?
Newly minted Captain Taylor Jackson, is not happy in an office and the promotion was forced on her.
Meanwhile when there is a high profile murder and then a subsequent kidnapping she's called to investigate to appease the brass and the political powers.
As she gets deeper into the investigation, her boss is not pleased with a SWAT team call that Taylor made. So she quits-something she has thought a lot about. She joins a former assassin that was out to kill her in looking for the kidnapped girl leaving behind her homicide detectives to find the killer of the murder victim.
Taylor jets all over Europe looking for leads in the kidnapping and finds that this is not the job for her after her police career. There is a couple of twists to the kidnapping but it was odd for Taylor to join a spy crew to find the answers.
Two college students hear an argument and gunshots. Nashville singer Georgia Wray has been shot and killed. One of the students, Carson, caught a glimpse of the killer. Now Carson is missing.
Taylor Jackson is a captain in the Nashville Police Department. She does not like a desk job and misses the line action. However, her commander sends her back out on the streets to solve this crime.
I love books by J.T.Ellison. It's been six or seven years since I read #4 in this series and I can't think of a possible reason why I missed the last few. Taylor Jackson and her law enforcement comrades in Marcus Wade, Lincoln Ross, and Samantha Owens make up a really good series and this novel is a strong addition. The last 2 chapters were fitting endings that I enjoyed. I can't wait to see what Taylor is up to in the next book. No more missing Taylor.
I love the Taylor Jackson series! It’s been way too long since the last book. One of the things I love about the series is that it’s a police procedural mystery series. The chemistry and interactions between Taylor and her team are fun to read. Taylor is a smart and complex character. This edition has Taylor questioning her future. Now that she has been promoted, she is spending more time on paperwork and less time out working cases. She starts to explore a future outside the police department. While I enjoyed seeing this character grow, I didn’t love the content of the mystery. A privately run spy group is a key element to the story. I hope the author will continue to write more Taylor Jackson stories. Would love to see some with her working closely with Sam again.
The Wolves Come at Night is a book I have been waiting years for. I fell in love with Taylor Jackson so long ago and missed the Nashville Metro with her cases. This story I was surprised with the path and excited to read about it. I think I enjoy Nashville more, but this exciting suspense of Taylor working with a private network and the potential to join forces had me wanting more Taylor. I need more Taylor and the rest of the gang. J.T. Ellison doesn't disappoint. Must read the whole Taylor Jackson series if you haven't yet. An unexpected twist and frienemies will keep you turning pages to see what happens next.
this is my first Taylor Jackson novel, and while it would have been helpful to read these in order to get the background and relationships of the characters, I was still able to enjoy it. Taylor has recently been assigned to be captain of Metro police, but she doesn't want to be a captain. She gets called in on a case to rescue a young Vanderbilt college student, Carson Conway, who was kidnapped. Meanwhile, Taylor is being recruited to work for a mercenary firm, the firm where her nemesis Angelie, works. Together, they must bring down the kidnappers. Lots of action, a thriller of a novel.
Excellent!!!! It's been a very long time since the last Taylor Jackson book came and I didn't think there would be another one. Imagine my surprise when I saw this book. This brought together a lot of known characters. Sam wasn't there in person but we heard from her just the same. There was a lot going on in this book which kept me intrigued from the start. Here's hoping that there will be more. Of course this caused what always happens for me. It's been so long since I read the series and I've forgotten basically everything so I'm going to reread the series.
I read this book without reading the last few books in the series and I did not feel lost in the story. The author did a good job of providing the historical information so that I knew what was going on and why. I really going back to Taylor Jackson's world. I love the characters in this series. They mystery was very interesting and the plot wrapped up some issue from past books. The plot was tightly written and fast-paced. We also get to see character development that was welcome. I would highly recommend this book.
