"You're on a fool's errand. Surely you know your father is dead."
Twenty years after her father's plane crashed in the jungles of Southeast Asia, Willy Jane Maitland was finally tracking his last moves. She recognised the dangers, but her search for the truth about that fateful flight was the only thing that mattered.
Without knowing who to trust, Willy turns to ex-army officer turned mercenary Guy Barnard. He knows the jungles like the back of his hand, but Willy can't be sure who he's really working for.
As deadly assailants chase them, Willy and Guy realise they're investigating secrets people will kill to protect.
Internationally bestselling author Tess Gerritsen took an unusual route to a writing career. A graduate of Stanford University, Tess went on to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, where she was awarded her M.D.
While on maternity leave from her work as a physician, she began to write fiction. In 1987, her first novel was published. Call After Midnight, a romantic thriller, was followed by eight more romantic suspense novels. She also wrote a screenplay, "Adrift", which aired as a 1993 CBS Movie of the Week starring Kate Jackson.
Tess's first medical thriller, Harvest, was released in hardcover in 1996, and it marked her debut on the New York Times bestseller list. Her suspense novels since then have been: Life Support (1997), Bloodstream (1998), Gravity (1999), The Surgeon (2001), The Apprentice (2002), The Sinner (2003), Body Double (2004), Vanish (2005), The Mephisto Club (2006), and The Bone Garden (2007). Her books have been translated into 31 languages, and more than 15 million copies have been sold around the world.
As well as being a New York Times bestselling author, she has also been a #1 bestseller in both Germany and the UK. She has won both the Nero Wolfe Award (for Vanish) and the Rita Award (for The Surgeon.) Critics around the world have praised her novels as "Pulse-pounding fun" (Philadelphia Inquirer), "Scary and brilliant" (Toronto Globe and Mail), and "Polished, riveting prose" (Chicago Tribune). Publisher Weekly has dubbed her the "medical suspense queen".
Now retired from medicine, she writes full time. She lives in Maine.
Tess Gerritsen writes consistently good books. However, for me, the kind of good they are varies depending upon the era they come from. Never Say Die falls into her romantic thriller category, which is my least favourite category for her work. Don’t get me wrong, the books that fall into this category are still great, but there is far too much of a romantic focus (as the category title would suggest).
If you’re a fan of all of Geritsen’s work – by that I mean you have read her early nineties stuff and not just her Rizzoli and Isles books – then by all means give Never Say Die a try. I’m sure you’ll adore it, in its own way, as I did. However, if you have only read her crime thrillers, be aware that you get something quite different in these books.
There is the consistent mystery across all of her books. You are always trying to uncover some hidden facts. When it comes to her romance thrillers, though, you have a predetermined ending in a number of ways. You get the lead male. You get the lead female. You know they’re going to get a happily ever after – together. It ruins quite a few aspects of the story for me, with attention being focused upon forming a relationship between the two. Why does this relationship need to be formed? Because we have a consistent main character initial hatred. Alone the thriller aspects are wonderful, if not short, but with the romantic aspect you have a tale of old that has been done many times before.
This time the tale of old takes place in the shadow of war. Our lead female character is on a search to find the answers regarding her missing-in-action father. Once half the world away, she is thrown into a mystery with many layers – a mystery where everyone seems to be using her to find her father. Does this mean she is truly searching for a living man, or are people mistaken about who he is? Whatever the case, she is not the only one searching for him. With enemies at her heels, and her life in danger, she turns to the only man that doesn’t have a gun to her head (figurate speaking, of course), although this man seems to have mysterious motives of his own.
It’s a storyline that already exists in the genre, but with Gerritsen you’re kept on the edge of your seat throughout as you guess all that is going on. Whilst some of it is predictable, it’s certainly an interesting read.
Overall, we still have a four star book. It is a weaker four stars than her Rizzoli and Isles books – the Rizzoli and Isles books are four stars working towards five, for me, whereas this is a four stars with the occasional slip into three star territory (mainly through my inability to deal with too much romance at once) – but it is still a four star read.
Certainly give it a read if you enjoy Gerritsen or romantic thriller.
I enjoyed this book. I was surprised how different it was to other Gerritsen books, I felt like I was reading a different author! It's the story of Willy, a young woman searching Vietnam for the truth about her father who was shot down during the war. She is joined in her search by Guy, an ex soldier, a man who initially has dubious motives for helping her but proves to be fundamentally decent. How their relationship develops is a bit predictable and is written in a rather old fashioned style, similar I believe to a Barbara Cartland story, though I haven't actually read any of her books! There are attempts on Willy's life and suspicion falls on a variety of characters, which maintains our interest. The story moves at a fast pace and has a couple of good twists at the end. As a stand alone thriller I enjoyed the book. If you are a Gerritsen fan looking for her normal type of edgy detective story then you will find this different but still I think enjoyable.
Aš jau nusipirkau dar kelis ir jau svajoju, kada skaitysiu… Be abejonės, knygai skiriu aukštus balus.
I read one of Tess Gerritsen's medical thrillers once and it was okay. I came across this in a sale and as the story sounded interesting I thought I'd give her another go. Well, this was just about okay too. Never Say Die is a thriller about a man and woman who team up against their better judgement to dig up some ghosts in Vietnam. Throughout the story there is a rather pathetic will-they-won't-they romance with the woman alternating between calling the man a cad and wanting to press herself to his manly chest. This is a constant theme throughout the book. There is a thriller hiding in there somewhere, but I found that pretty mediocre too.
The story starts with William (Wild Bill) Maitland piloting a flight into Southeast Asia during the war, with cargo onboard that no-one would talk about, as well as a silent VIP passenger. When the plane drew flack and tracers, and they were hit, they were nonchalant, but suddenly there was more to it than that, and the plane disappeared from the radar.
Twenty years later, Willy Maitland was searching for her father. Her mother was dying, and had never forgotten her husband, and begged Willy to find some answers before it was too late. But everywhere Willy turned she hit a wall of silence. No-one knew anything, everyone told her to drop it, all government departments were stone-walling her. She was growing more and more frustrated, until she decided to go and search the countryside for herself. She was a determined young lady, feisty and courageous, but she had no idea what she was letting herself in for.
When mercenary Guy Barnard offered to help her, she didn’t want to trust him. Heavens, she didn’t trust anyone! Let alone a person like Barnard. But after only just escaping with her life, twice, she realized there was something more to what was happening than just a girl looking for her missing father.
The jungles were overgrown and scary, the mosquitos thick, the heat oppressive, but the people who were out to stop Willy and Guy finding out twenty year old secrets were deadly! They were only one step ahead of these assassins, but would it remain that way? The desolation Willy felt when yet another person died whom they had just talked to, just wouldn’t leave her.
Would they find what they were seeking, or would the assassins find them first? Another wonderful thriller by Tess Gerritsen, an edge of your seat ride, one that you won’t be able to put down until you turn the final page. Highly recommended.
I hate hate hate giving a 2 star to Tess Gerritsen as she's one of my favourite authors. Unfortunately I have to be honest in my reviews though. I would class this book as more romance, less thriller. I didn't connect with it at all and really struggled with the storyline. Whereas with all the other Gerritsen books I have managed to finish in approx 24 hours this has dragged out about 3 days. 2 stars given for the fact that I liked the characters and some parts were good. Unfortunately there were too many lose ends, e.g where did Oliver come into it and more. I will continue reading Tess Gerritsen and just hope her other books are more suspense and thriller with less predictable romance.
It's not often I get barely 30 pages into a book and give up. I'm a perfectionist and even if I'm hating every word on a book's page, I'll usually finish it just to say I saw it through.
That is an impossibility with this book. Every single cliche from ghastly 80s romance/adventure films comes into play here.
Never Say Die is the 6th stand-alone novel by popular author, Tess Gerritsen. Physical anthropologist, Guy Barnard works for the US Army ID Lab, identifying remains of MIA US soldiers. On his way to Saigon to do just that, he is blackmailed into looking for a US pilot turned traitor who flew for the VC, known as “Friar Tuck”. Willy Jane Maitland has come to Asia to try to find her father, Wild Bill Maitland, MIA in 1970, but whom she and her mother believe is still alive. Wild Bill is also believed by some to be the notorious Friar Tuck. Coincidentally (??), Guy and Willy encounter each other in Bangkok, where Guy is drawn to Willy not only because she can help him find Wild Bill, but also because he is really very attracted to her. As Guy and Willy try to track Bill down, they are shadowed at every turn: the CIA? The Vietnamese Government? Someone acting for Bill? There are many throats slit and Willy finds herself wondering if there is anyone she can trust, but eventually, help comes from and unexpected quarter. This Gerritsen offering has plenty of action, drama, romance and a bit of sex. The heat and humidity of South East Asia is palpable and the dialogue is credible. It has an interesting plot with a few twists. Excellent early Gerritsen.
Before Tess made it big writing her popular Rizzoli/Isles series, she wrote romantic thrillers, and Never Say Die is one of them. It was originally published in 1992 has been re-released in light of her new found fame. While not as good as her current books, you can definitely recognise her writing, and it's still a good story.
Willy Maitland is searching for her father who died when his plane went down during the war 20 years previously, but when people start dropping dead, she realises there's something that is trying to be covered up. Woven through this is Willy's relationship with Guy Barnard, who insists on helping her, but Willy suspects his motives. Some of the plot is fairly predictable, especially the romance aspect, but the thriller side keeps it moving along nicely and the ending is good. I would say I prefer her newer books which don't have the big romance aspects that the older ones do, but it was still really enjoyable to read, and I'll probably keep picking up her old ones.
Sappiest book I've read in a long time. Willie, named after her father, is the main character searching for her father who disappeared 20 years ago during the Vietnam War. She says things like, "I could tell by his smell, he would protect her" and "It was the hand she learned she could trust." Some of her statements made me laugh. She is being helped to find her father by Guy, a man she met in Thailand. Willie is afraid to trust any man and expects them to leave her so she won't commit. Willie is not sure who to trust, but people are trying to kill her and someone else is trying to protect her. Is her father alive or not? This book is just too unbelievable.
This is quite a departure from Tess Gerritson's other books. I began reading her with her first book in the mid nineties. Most of her books have had a medical theme as that is her background. I usually don't care for books dealing with the Vietnam era, but this is a good one. I think this is a stand-alone novel, but wouldn't mind if she writes more in this vein.
The first book I have read by TG(if we don't count NRftD) and the reason I wanted to check on her works was TV series Rizzoli & Isles(Haven't read the books) This book has nothing to do with that series Maybe it was Bill Haber's success (?) Wasn't that bad though but I expect more or I guess I expected too much.
This book may have been published 25 years ago, but it’s really good and it shows just how good an author Tess Gerritsen is! It’s a quick, compelling read – you won’t be disappointed! I’ve enjoyed every single book of hers that I’ve read.
Tess Gerritsen is a very good writer who specialises in medical thrillers and being am ex physician shows a great knowledge and detail to her work. Fast paced novel that makes excellent reading.
I've never read adventure novels since I'm like 11 or something, and I didn't meant to read one either. I expected a crime-full murder-full book which has blood and death and trauma in it. It wasn't like that. That's why you should start books AFTER you read the back cover. Not before. It was an adventure romance novel so it didn't attract me that much (because I don't specifically like the genre) BUT I try my best to write this review objectively. So the book was good. (What a nice start.) It was easily read and the language was good blah blah let's skip to the real shit- HOW COME. TWO PERSON. CRRRAAAZZIILLYY FALL IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER. IN JUST WEEKS.
ANSWER THE QUESTION, GERRITSEN.
It's totally not that I don't believe in love (I do. Deep in my heart. Somewhere really deep.) BUT THEY DON2T EVEN KNOW EACH OTHER AND CONSIDERING THEY HATED (REALLY HATED) EACH OTHER IN THE FIRST DAYS IT'S EVEN HARDER FOR THEM TO FALL IN LOVE WITH ECH OTHER.
Normally, I don't obsess with love things. But since the topic is half a lost father and adventures and HALF LOVE STORY, I think I have the right to question things.
And, I wouldn't name my main guy Guy. I'd name him something which sounds more sexier. (fyi, Tess) And their relationship was toxic (kinda) but sweet (very)
SO, TO CONCLUDE. Did I like the book? Yea. Would I reccomend it? If you're into CIA and adventure novels and that stuff. Is it a Tess Gerritsen kind of a novel. No. definetely not. Am I disappointed? Kinda. I think I'm gonna cry while I'm writing to my journal about this one. (This was a joke) Normally, 3 stars but 4 because I just ADORE Tess's books. don't read it. go read some other Tess novel. bye<3
This is my first book by the author and I really enjoyed it. I love romantic suspense where the mystery/suspense/thriller aspect is just as immersive and complex as the romance.
This is also the first book I can remember where the Vietnam War took such a prominent role. It made for a lot of new and interesting information about the countries and era for me. Not exactly enemies, but Guy and Willie were definitely at odds with each other for quite a bit of the book. Willie only begrudgingly works with Guy to try to determine what happened to her father while he has his own motives.
I enjoyed the action and mystery aspect - uncovering what happened 20 years ago and how it’s still stretching into the present (present in that this book was written in the 90s). Lots of running for their lives and not knowing who can be trusted. The pacing was terrific.
The ending and big reveals were great. Loved the last epiloguish chapter.
Narration: I chose this specifically because it’s narrated by Amy McFadden. As usual, she’s great with all the accents, emotions, pacing, and giving a huge cast of characters unique voices and personalities. Fantastic listen.
Willy Maitland goes on a quest to Vietnam to find her father who has been missing since the war at the behest of her dying mother. She has no idea what she'll find, if he's dead or alive. Navigating the waters of military and foreign politics proves to be even more difficult than she thought. Guy Barnard is also searching for someone - and that someone may or may not be Willy's father. Guy can't help but feel responsible for the attractive woman, and offers to work together. Unfortunately, wherever Willy goes, people die. While they search for the missing Maitland, the two fall in love, though neither is willing to admit to those feelings.
I loved the rich, vibrant setting, and enjoyed the characters. I recommend this book for readers who enjoy action and adventure with a dash of romance.
Considering Never Say Die was originally published in 1992, it stands the test of time surprisingly well. Set in Southeast Asia (Thailand and Vietnam, mainly), we're thrown into the world post-Vietnam war only to find the war isn't really over yet. While I'm unsure of the historical accuracy of the politics, it made for an intriguing and refreshing suspense read, even if the romance was pretty standard fare.
The was everything: a thrilling story, danger, drama, history, detective with hidden motives, unfaithful people, where truth has many faces, secrets and classic style romantic story, and everything - in my favourite place, where we have been - Southeast Asia, Bangkok ;)
