Reynolds Recoveries #1

The San Marco Heist

Rate this book
With her brother’s life on the line, Scarlett will do anything to get him back—even team up with an annoyingly sexy private eye for the heist of a lifetime.

When I plan the recovery of stolen items for their rightful owners, nothing matters more than the safety of my team. I trust no one outside our tight-knit circle. Because a couple years ago I lost my fiancé in a heist gone wrong. My heist. My fault.

But while undercover to take back a near-priceless manuscript, I encounter Malcolm Sharpe, an old friend of my brother’s whose diamond-blue eyes and toe-curling smile almost cause me to blow the heist. We pull it off, beating another team to the prize, but I can’t help feeling like I’ve dodged a bullet.

The other team, though, will stop at nothing to get revenge. That includes kidnapping both Malcolm and my brother—and sending only Malcolm back with a message. They demand my crew steal a medieval relic in exchange for my brother’s life.

And then there’s my brother’s plea to trust Malcolm. Trust a freelance PI whose loyalty ends with a paycheck? Not a chance. But if I’m to get my brother back alive, I need all the help I can get. Even if it's from a man who’s hiding a secret that could turn my entire world upside down.

The San Marco Heist is the exhilarating first installment in the Reynolds Recoveries romantic suspense series, featuring charismatic heroes, smart heroines, and a thrilling adventure in each novel.

Not bad for a freebie

However its predictability and ‘rote-ness’ made it boring in the last half. I called the big bad/twist at the 20% point and just waited to be right (I was 😏).
Overall this wasn’t bad. It was a fairly well crafted Heist, in the vein of National Treasure, and obviously an indie work, as it needed better beta reading for continuity and general plot editing. If you don’t read a lot of these, this one isn’t bad. If you’ve read a lot of suspense romance, this one will be less than exciting. The author followed an obvious formula but made the characters likeable and I enjoyed it enough that, if I can find the rest of the series at the library, I may continue.

But I would have loved if this was more original, had more emotion and delved deeper into the two main characters. As it is it’s a pretty ok book, but I could easily tell how the story was going to go and the ending was a big disappointment so it does not make to four stars.

Book one in my goal to prioritize Canadian authors for 2025 🇨🇦.

**************

Just putting down some notes on the continuity issues.

When writing a heist story, continuity errors really pull you out of it. There were several in this, quotes below:

First: I gestured to the painting I’d been admiring. “This looks remarkably like a piece that was stolen from a museum in Miami about five or so years ago?”

Then later: Maybe tell her how I recognized the painting in the meeting room? No, that was my ace in the hole if everything else failed. Go slow, hold the big details back until they were needed.

First: The second plan included Brie hacking into their security system and watching through their own feed. But the system was fully contained within the house, with no access from the outside.

Then later: “There’s more cameras than we knew about,” said Brie. “I need to knock them out, wipe the history, and cover my tracks. I can’t work on the biometrics, too.” She says from her remote location, accessing the security feed from THE OUTSIDE.

First Malcolm deduces this: He was loud and brash, not to mention a risk-taker. He liked everyone and everyone liked him. She was definitely the oldest.

And then he thinks this: Declan and Rav, acting like more protective big brothers than I suspected Emmett ever had,

Then later she says this: It took its toll on our relationship, but that was my job as the oldest—bear the brunt of everything and protect Emmett and Brie.

I was given an ARC of this book and I’m leaving an honest review.

I was not expecting to like this book SO MUCH.
It was perfect if you like a heist vibe like La casa de Papel or Red Notice. The book and the characters are really well written. And I loved the fact that we had Malcom’s pov too. He was as much a main character as Scarlett, not only a love interest.
I wish we saw more of Emmet, and even though it makes sense story-wise that we did not, I hope we will see a lot of him in the next book (about Declan).
The book was very heist orientated, the romance was super slow burn (well they almost instantly are attracted to each other but the physical part and emotional part is slow burn) so it was not the main focus here.
If you are looking for a romance you might feel a little bit disappointed for the first half of the book… BUT if you want a super cool story about a team/found family stealing some pretty expensive stuff and getting pressured by kidnappers while also having some spicy moments this book is perfect for you!!
I strongly recommend and will totally read the next books

I wrote this review for Saucy Reviews on Kinky Korner.
Although this type of story isn’t my usual reading material, I enjoyed the prequel, The Phoenix Heist, and eagerly started this story, especially knowing its main female lead character was going to be Scarlett Reynolds. She is the eldest daughter and the physical backbone of the family recovery business, she oversees and manages each heist, or recovery, the Reynolds family complete. But more than that she is as smart as a whip, supportive of her family and has a sassy comeback—even if it is in her head at times. 😆 Mind you she also expects things to be done her way.

Enter Malcolm, once their adversary, then their team member. He too, is quick-witted and has an intelligence to match Scarlett’s. Sparks fly when they meet but this is definitely a slow-burn romance. I loved it because the focus was on their plans and the action and drama. The underlying romance was a great balance.

The Reynolds Recovery team members, some Reynolds family members and some long-time friends, all (except Evelyn, who annoyed me so much) share an insane bond and incredible camaraderie. Working together as a team, this is imperative I expect, but they truly care for each other. The quick thinking on-the-fly by all of the members is a bit crazy but a lot entertaining.

This fast-paced book has a solid storyline with plenty of exciting action and drama, interesting characters and fantastic descriptions. I totally recommend this to everyone who enjoys a mystery that has a lot of twists and turns.

I didn't have any idea what to expect when I picked up this book but I was intrigued by the description. Scarlett is the head of a "recovery" team that sometimes works within the law and sometimes not quite so inside the law. She had her heart broken two years ago when her fiancé died and she hasn't recovered so she focuses all of her energy on her team and blocks out the chance at finding happiness with another man. Malcolm is a lone wolf. He works mostly as PI but sometimes does a bit of "recovery" on the side. When Scarlett and Malcolm meet at a party where they are both doing a bit of "recovery" their lives become entwined and they find that maybe they each have what the other has been missing for so long.

Both Scarlett and Malcolm have good reasons for keeping people at arm's length. I thought their slow realizations that they belong together was well done. Now to the heist! The author created a series of situations that were complex without being impenetrable. There were twists and turns and it was believable that human beings could in fact do the things the team was doing. I thought the first half of the book was a tad slow, but the second half had a better flow. The author spends time setting up bits and pieces that are likely to become important in later installments.

My chief complaint was that the author played the game of giving a little forward momentum to the relationship and then the characters would repeat the reasons why it was a bad idea. The repetition didn't actually push the story forward in any appreciable manner. In fact, I started counting down to the when the characters would have to think or speak their reasons one more time. It was distracting from the story.

This story takes place in multiple locations, but the important aspects are that the team is always together, and they are working in some very fancy parties. This is the first book in a new series so a lot of characters and relationships were introduced. There is a "bad guy" that is clearly going to be part of the future stories. I will read more from this author in the future. I am interested to see where she goes with this series.

Deserves more than 5*!!
What the fascination is with non-violent “villains” whose activities are bordering on the knife-edge between legal and illegal actions, I don’t know. However, I for one love these kinds of books, and I personally feel that these well-rounded, well-written books, including the prequel, the Phoenix Heist, ought to be picked up by filmmakers and made into a series for TV. The scene-appropriate dialogues, the storyline, as well as the characters which are developed and described very well, would lend themselves very well to becoming an entertaining film/TV series. The relationship between the protagonists is slow to develop, due primarily to Scarlett’s attitude. Scarlett, is the operations manager of Reynolds Recoveries, who is reluctant, to say the least, to pair up with Malcolm, a handsome private eye in the recovery of certain artefacts. She is traumatised by past events and under the thumb of a domineering mother. With her brother kidnapped, she can’t afford to lose her concentration even for a second. The author’s description of a slow burn, enemies to lovers, and forced proximity, scenario is quite fitting.
The storyline is clean, yet suggestive, making it hot in a way, including very good descriptions of close friendly relationships between supporting characters, not just the protagonists.
The book is a perfect blend of an action/adventure romance, romantic suspense, and a heist, depicting several thrilling robberies that even James Bond would be proud of.
There is an incredible twist to the end, which is crowned by an HFN. The group’s future adventures will hopefully continue this promising series.

A crack team who recover valuables and return them to rightful owners is led by Scarlett. Her mother, who owns the company, taught her not to cry, not to show her feelings, and she criticizes her without any praise.

Malcolm is a lone wolf, an expert in thievery hired by various people. His father virtually abandoned him after his Mom died, so he now trusts no one and only looks after himself.

They meet when he and Scar’s brother Emmett are kidnapped and he’s released to get a ring to exchange for Emmett’s release.

Neither trusts the other, but Malcolm really wants to help and shows himself to be useful with the whole team. They warn him not to hurt Scarlett or they’ll hurt him.

With lots of adventure, clever plans by all involved, and some great twists, they obtain the ring, rescue Emmett, and confront the crazy kidnappers.

The couple see they can trust each other and be real, and Malcolm becomes the newest team member.

An excellent book. I love the characters, the plot, and the humour mixed in with the suspense.

Want more.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

I will go ahead and tell you that you need to buckle up for this one. Your emotions are going to be all over the place reading this book. I think I went from bliss to frustration to angry all in about the span of two seconds. It is a book you're going to finish and have to process. This book is mainly told from Slash's point of view and man it will put you through your paces. I don't even know that I can say a thing about what happens in this book and not give something away. It is certainly a ride with Slash who has denied and denied his feelings for years and is tormented really. The man is for sure waging a war between his head and his heart. We can't forget Lily and you get to go along the journey with her through the things she has been through. Trust me they aren't pretty. Like I said, buckle up, it's going to be one crazy ride.

Fabulous:
This book ticked all the boxes. It had mystery, suspense, action, camaraderie and romance. I loved how unique and unpredictable it was. There were plenty of twists and turns which left me totally surprised and guessing at what was going to happen next. It would be best to read the prequel "The Phoenix Heist" prior to reading this book as it sets the stage and provides much needed backstory.
Malcolm and Scarlett were perfect together and the tension and chemistry between them was totally palpable. The interactions between the various characters felt organic and authentic. I also liked the fact that not everything worked out perfectly and thus it came across as realistic and plausible.
All in all a wonderful new series and I am curious to discover more about the rest of these team members and friends.

This book has a well developed plot and believable characters. Scarlett is operational manager for Reynolds Recoveries and despite personal heartbreak, she is desperately trying to prove herself to her mother who is in charge. The team successfully pulls off a heist under the nose of a rival team led by private investigator Malcolm, who is a friend of her brother Emmett. When her brother is kidnapped as a result of the heist, Scarlett must place her trust in the outsider PI to secure Emmett’s release and sparks fly between them from the start. There is an interesting twist in the story that devastates Scarlett. Another great book from Janet and I am really looking forward to the whole series. I recommend that you also read The Phoenix Heist as a prelude to book 2.

Would You Believe … A Pterodactyl?

ReynoldsRecoveries1

We met Scarlett Reynolds as a seat mate of Sam’s in Chasing Caine. Scarlett was a “tech specialist” with a side of psychology. Then, she reappeared in Enduring Caine, having recovered the Pompeiian fresco and terracotta paint pot.

We found out they are not “Robin Hood”, stealing from the rich to give to the poor; but paid and contracted recoverists, who get stolen or lost items back to original owners.

Are they thieves or vigilantes?

They do plan heists … but, they don’t have sticky fingers, and they try to avoid collateral damages.

I kinda like them.

What a delicious little set-up! Great suspenseful romance that engages the reader's brain and emotions (rare to do, so that you Janet Oppedisano)! Kinda like all the shmick heist movies put into a great romance vibe, and boy does this book smoke with heat and lust.

If this is the beginning of a series and not just a duet - I am in HEAVEN - although obviously a duet will finish the cliffy! I am so excited to keep reading this author's work - it's addictive!.

Scarlett is the operations manager for Reynolds Recoveries, and she needs to join forces with Malcolm, a sexy private investigator, and her brother’s good friend to pull off a heist. This is a well written slow burn story, which has revenge, heartbreak, loyalty, trust, loyalty, family, friendships, intrigue, action, twists, and is a romance suspense, which leads to a thrilling page turner.
I look forward to reading more from this author whose work I recommend.

I just hate the miscommunication trope so much. And keeping a secret that put your team in more danger??? So freaking unbelievable. And the secret twist that everyone saw coming? Lame.

The suspense was good. Great, even. I loved how it was more about the tactics than the romance. But then they all made stupid choices and I just can't follow any of that. And I found the lack of grovel so out of character that I just didn't care after that.

The perfect spicy romance involves romantic suspense and adventure and this book had both. The brothers best friend trope helped add an additional layer to their romance. The hesit component made my bookworm heart happy because it added the drama and you were at the edge of your seat.

I really enjoyed the interaction of Scarlet and Malcolm. They were so funny. I enjoyed the Spitfire Scarlet. Reynold women don’t cry.. there are some steamy parts do you like I do skip over them and there are some ugly words, but not too many and they’re in the right place. Yes, I’d recommend this book. There is a mystery, and I never would have thought who the clowns were.

The romance was good. The mother was just too much. Scar finally stood up to her in the end. She drove me crazy. Scar appeared at times to have a split personality. This made me uncomfortable. She was too old to still be under her mother’s thumb. The mystery was also quite good.
