About the author

Billy Aronson's work in the theater includes the original concept/additional lyrics for the Broadway musical Rent. His plays have been published in six volumes of Best American Short Plays, and collected in Funny Shorts. TV writing credits include The Wonder Pets, Beavis and Butt-Head, and Courage the Cowardly Dog. With the artist Jennifer Oxley he created the PBS Kids show Peg + Cat, which has won Emmy Awards for music, design, writing, acting, and best animated preschool show. With his wife, Lisa Vogel, he created their animated offspring Jake and Anna.

Fen öğretmeni olduğum için arada böyle kitaplar okumayı ve öğrendiğim yeni şeyleri derslerimde kullanmayı seviyorum. Bu kitap daha çok çocuklara yönelikti. Günümüzdeki bilimsel bilgilerin oluşumunun aslında daha önce yapılan gaflar, hatalar sonucu oluştuğunu gerçek örneklerle açıklıyordu. Ve ana tema hata yapmaktan korkmayıp gaf yapsak bile araştırmaya yönelmemiz üzerindeydi. Ben beğendim.

The existence of this book points out an odd quirck? Oversight? Failing, perhaps, of the Library of Congress classification system. Particularly, there's not really a space for children's books. The Library of Congress system was created in 1897 to organize the works in the Library of Congress. But it is VERY MUCH reflective of the books housed in the collection at that time, and it hasn't aged very well. For instance, first the top level "classes" (the first letter i.e. B - Philosophy; Psychology; Religion; L - Education) have no relationship to the category before or after. For instance, Education is preceded by K - Law and followed by M - Music. S - Agriculture, is preceded by R - Medicine, and followed by T - Technology. Second, areas that have experienced extreme growth - computers; women's studies - are relegated to small "sections" of those classes. All of women studies is confined to a subsection of HQ - The Family. Marriage, Women and Human Sexuality. Third - Naval Science has its entire own top level class - "V" - and is separate from "U" - Military Sciences.

Okay, that's a quick background. Now Scientific Goofs is a cute book, but it's a children's book. It's a VERY VERY basic review of different scientific discoveries that were built upon goofs. Cute, quick, very little depth. But because the section for ALL of children's books are all confined between PZ5 and PZ7! That includes every fiction children's book, non-fiction, biographies, etc. Imagine the size of a children's section at a local public library, and now imagine all of those being labeled with a call number that begins between PZ5 and PZ7. The books would either have VERY similar call numbers or be extremely long.

So this wasn't really a review of the book, per se, but explains that my entry to the book was through the sciences, not through children's books, and so I was really disappointed. The book isn't even a kids' science book. It's more of a motivational "you can succeed through failing" kids' book that uses examples from science. But on the whole, the book wasn't really well-written, very much glosses over any "facts" (such as dates; more than one scientist per chapter; etc.) and just wasn't really worth the time. Bu kitap muhteşemdi!

Şu an 15 yaşından küçük bir çocuğa ilk alacağım kitap bu olurdu. Kitap bilimsel düşüncenin temel esaslarını ve bilimin ilerleyişini çok tatlı bir dille ve en güzel örnekleriyle anlatıyordu. Tam da okullarda öğretilmeyen ve bizim çocukların ihtiyaç duyduğu unsur sizin anlayacağınız. Üstelik bilim devlerinin yaptığı dev gaflar ve bilim tarihinin en eğlenceli anıları da işin cabası. Nasıl akılda kalıcı anlatmışlarsa çoğunu hala capcanlı hatırlıyorum.

Bu yaşımda hala okuyabilirim. Umarım hala baskısı yapılıyordur.

Yetişkin olmama rağmen büyük bir keyifle okuduğum, simyacılıktan Piltdown adamına kadar pek çok bilimsel hatayı basit bir dille anlatan bir kitap. Bilimin pek çok hatadan sonra ilerleyebildiğini ve hataların doğruya ulaştıracak yolların açılmasına vesile olduğu çok güzel açıklıyor.

Çocuk kitabı olmasına rağmen bu kitabı okumaktan zevk alacak çocuk tanımıyorum maalesef. Çeviriden kaynaklı olabilir ama dilinin çocukları cezbedeceğini sanmıyorum.
