Tilting Gravity

Rate this book
The moon is falling. Born with the gravity majik needed to prevent certain doom, instead of training, seventeen-year-old Syd spends her days skipping academy classes to tinker with airships, ignoring her future as a soldier in the army of the Eichon–the goddess-gifted ruler of the planet. As expected, Syd ends up in the Director's office more often than not, and the academy has had to get creative with its "motivational methods" in hopes that Syd will begin to take her gravity majik seriously. Luckily, she's untouchable, betrothed to the Eichon’s daughter, Adeline. Unluckily, Syd's about to learn she will be the next to take up the Eichon’s mantle. Adeline has been groomed to follow in her mother’s footsteps since she was a child. When it’s revealed Syd, not Adeline, will become the next Eichon (not to mention do the impossible–save the world), trust begins to break as roles and identities fall apart. Then, when Adeline goes missing, Syd must follow the destiny given to her or find Adeline. All the while, the looming moon serves as an ever-present reminder of just how small–and thus how big–her problems truly are.

Give me some time to formulate my thoughts. Will be back, soon.

When I heard about this book, I knew that one day I would buy it, then read it. Well, the other day...I read it.

I am not the target audience for this book (which I already knew), but there was something about it...that I wanted experience.

I've been following this author's Twitter, then BlueSky and Instagram social media outlets for years.

I love the world that she has created. I also enjoyed the characters. My struggle was the story itself. Please don't take this as a negative, but something to improve for the sequels (and I do hope that she continues to write in this world).

I'm usually really good at stories that are not linear (which this isn't), but for some reason...I kept getting lost in the story, not being able to follow the story as it was being revealed to me, the reader.

I was SO intrigued by the magic (majik) and the reason for what the main character was going through.

This is a "chosen one" story, but it is also saying a LOT of other things...for which the main character had to go through, to get to the point...where she could fulfill her destiny.

When the sequel is published, I am going to reread this story, then read the sequel. While I let this story "live in my brain", I look forward to seeing where she (the author) takes this story...onward.

The author has something to say, and I want to read/experience this world, more.

Thank you

Jenn’s beautiful storytelling sucked me in from the beginning with her lyrical prose and richly developed world building. The magic system in the book was fascinating to me, and I can’t wait to see how the main characters’ powers continue to grow and develop. Her protagonists are feisty and real and deeply relatable, which makes it all the more heartbreaking when {{{redacted}}}.

The way Jenn intertwined the fantasy elements with sci-fi throughout the book was deftly done, and made the world come to life. Certain scenes reminded me strongly of the Hunger Games while still having strong fantasy vibes. I was emotionally invested from the very beginning and can’t wait to see what happens to Syd and Ady in the next book!

'Tilting Gravity' is a YA fantasy Sci fi adventure about self-discovery and learning how to harness your power. The whole story plays like one big metaphor for the very human struggle to face up to those big messy feelings we can't always name, control or understand - love, trauma, jealousy, our own mortality, and our sense of strength, sanity and self-worth. Just my kind of book!

The story centres around Syd, a teenager with magical powers living in the fantasy world Terrus (there's even a map - love a good book map) whose best friend and girlfriend Adeline is daugther of the powerful, Eichon - a kind of empress queen-type newly elected every 20 years and adorned with potent magical powers to rule. Everyone assumes that Adeline is in line to be the next Eichon, and Syd her special guard, but there are hidden secrets to be revealed...

The world is realised really well, with consistent rules and great attention to detail in the small things which really makes it come alive. Syd and Adeline are best friends and in love, but with the kind of messy teenage romance that is totally believable. With the impending destruction of the planet on the horizon, Syd and Adeline discover that they are central to an effort to rescue Terrus, but in very surprising ways. Ending with unanswered questions, there's definitely more to come...

It has good pace, action, and adventure in amongst the bigger questions. Recommended read for anyone who likes starships, battles with beautiful majik, journeys of self-discovery, and fantastical new worlds!

I've been tricked! Bamboozled, I say!
For like 100+ pages I thought I was reading a nice little sapphic YA sci-fi academia story...I was getting all invested in the characters and in the budding romance, and in the historical and scientific and majikal details of the world, and then--

Holy ratcheting up of stakes!
Great green history-isn't-all-it-seems!
Fiery psychological drama!

AIRSHIPS!

This was a fun ride, with weighty and even dark topics handled deftly and with purpose, never for their own sake, or for shock. Young characters thrown into bigger and more complex plots than they could have anticipated, and handling them in realistically aggravating ways...while never losing heart. Brilliant twists of both plot and interpersonal dynamics...with planet-wide affects. The back cover copy nails it: "...the looming moon serves as an ever-present reminder of just how small--and thus how big--her problems truly are."

This is an engaging and unusual young adult fantasy that'll go down well with fans of anime and the Final Fantasy series, whilst maintaining its own charming identity. A troubled sapphic heroine, close friends and high stakes keep the story rolling until a climax that'll leave you wanting more.

In the next entry in this series, I'd like to get to know some more of the characters in more detail and understand the history and culture of Terrus better.

I loved every word in this story. I found myself relating to several of the characters as I moved along with the story. Or should I say as the story moved me along? A beautiful world is found along with adventure, intrigue, and love in all its forms within this story. In the end, I wanted more. You will, too.
