I enjoyed this book. The characters were well developed, and the opening scene was unexpected and set the story up for mystery and violence…though not in a gratuitous way. DI Robin Scott is likable and the author does a good job of showing his vulnerabilities. I also loved the author’s way of describing the weather, scenes, and character personalities. I could visualize them perfectly and she achieved this without becoming overly wordy. Some of my favorite lines were, “rain like nails,” and “an invisible tripwire of hostility.” The plot takes a minute to unfold, and then the last quarter of the book is sped up to match the action. A cliffhanger gets you in the end, opening up the door for the next installment of this inspector’s crime solving career. As a US reader, the dialect contained words I didn’t recognize, but was easy to assume what was implied. This book was interesting, held my attention, and I really like the authors writing style! I really enjoyed the plot of this book. The humor was fitting, and the characters were very interesting. I get a kick out of reading British novels because their words are pretty entertaining. However, the bad grammar, typos, and lack of proper sentence structuring really took away from the story. If I hadn't liked it so much, I would've went down to 3 stars instead of 4 because the lack of editing made it hard to read.
Turner-Hargreaves book left me guessing up to the end. So many twists and turns. I became so engrossed in the story. I found myself reading bits and pieces every chance I could get. The characters are written with so much depth and personality. Highly recommend this incredible thriller.
Very intriguing book. The beginning sets up the cast of characters well, and gives us the primary conflict. A murder mystery, where more than one person has a reason to have killed the victim. The dialogue is good, the character development strong.
If you like murder mysteries, I suggest this book.
What a fantastic book! I just couldn't put it down. The story had me hooked from page 1. Now, I can't wait for a new story involving Robin, Cat and the team.
