China during the Tang Dynasty in the 8th century is simply the perfect backdrop for a romance novel, and a modern-day "Harlequin" at that. Even more so when a former imperial concubine of "precious" rank, court intrigue, a high-ranking general, civil war, a sect of assassins, and a dragon tattoo are all thrown into the mix. A true Chinese drama series, but without the annoying censorship and mother-party propaganda imposed on all contemporary Chinese productions. A wonderful relaxation.
P.S. I re-read the final scene with the meeting of the two generals, where one went to kill the other. Splendid, raising the stars — this is how romance novels should be written: tight and brief, with respect for the reader's intellect, and with a solid knowledge of history and psychology; anything else is just wasted paper!
